Recommending M65 Jackets

  • I am a big fan of US M65 field jackets which are very good all weather coats, the inside liner is removable if you want to use it in warm weather or keep it in for cold and wet weather. The jacket has a hood that is zipped under the collar and 4 front pockets.
    M65 jackets are either available as surplus or reproductions, quality can vary a lot depending on manufacturer but overall the design is excellent.

    I will never forget the time we lost the truck keys at the pier after a day of deep sea fishing in Jacksonville right before Thanksgiving. My brothers gave me hell for wearing my 80's m65 jacket. I was the only warm one when we all hunkered down in the truck to wait for my grandfather to bring a spare key from 200 miles away. That was a rather cold night on the coast.

    I have an Alpha M-65 made in 1967. It’s certainly better quality than most jackets made today. Although it’s over 50 years old, it still looks new except for a little fading. All of the hardware works and I believe it will still work for 50 more years.

    I love M65 field jackets, my father got me one as I was a kid because he bought them as well so I pretty much grew up with that jacket. Still love it today. I really like the big pockets, you can easily put a bottle in it, some gloves or even squeeze a 2 liter Tetra pak in each of the bigger pockets. I wear it pretty much all year, it gets wet in the rain but it never got wet underneath so far.
    As far as I know Alpha Industries makes the best version because of the material its made off. Expensive but its a jacket you can wear for a very long time.

    I own two, both are the green OG-107 shade. one was made during the late 60s early 70s, and is old and tattered, and my new one is beautifully preserved and was made in 1967, and has aluminum zippers. I love the large pockets, and how you can button a linear in when it’s cold outside. I’ll soon have the 612th Tactical Fighter Squadron patch on the left shoulder and Air force Name tapes on mine, since that was my Grandpa’s unit.

    even the helikon that people say it's the best copy, is made in china now, and it's written on the ticket inside. Mine came today, from Poland, from the official site, it's good quality not saying it isn't, but just a warning for those who think they will get the same label as the people that uploaded reviews of their m65 classic nyco from Helikon these past years. The 2021 version has changed labels inside, even the carton that used to have the jackets drawing is different. The jacket seems the same, but that made in china thing is bugging me. We'll see.

    Definitely would go for the olive green M65 for my tastes. I like the British army windproof smock, they come in MTP, desert, but I do not like to wear camo patterns. There are copies of this jacket though and the best one I've seen is the Särmä Windproof Smock in green over at varusteleka, but damned expensive.

    I prefer the M51 field jackets which are much the same as the M65 but have button cuffs and no built in flimsy hood. The collar on the M51 is also better and you can button in a liner and a proper hood if you want. I do have a 1970s era OD M65 and my advice is if you want a M65 to buy a surplus US military one rather than the fashion or army wannabes ones because the quality is better and they'll last longer.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93

      As I said my tan M65 is a surplus one from somewhere as it has all the NATO numbers in it and no obvious clothing brand label. Does anywhere still make M51 jackets?
      If I was to buy a replacement jacket though I'd probably go for something a lot more modern.

    • @HanauMan
      @HanauMan 6 років тому +1

      Oh yeah, I'd go for a modern jacket over a surplus one too, like a ACU or maybe a MTP smock. Your tan jacket may be surplus but it isn't an American military jacket. The label is wrong for US gear and that NATO number doesn't mean anything either. I'm guessing that it is a Chinese copy, though there is nothing wrong with that. Read the label carefully and you'll see it is a tad sloppy. It still is a good piece of kit nevertheless.

While the Army is still using the ACU but in OCP (Scorpion/proto-Multicam) the Air Force has decided to completely ditch their ABUs and have adopted OCP and are, apparently, calling their new uniform OCP, so it's OCP in OCP.

    I will disagree with points that you made are pros of m65 jackets and its clones. They may be warm and I don't doubt this, but they are quite heavy in comparison to modern counterparts (like softshell jackets and gore-tex and gore-tex alike membranes) and the material itself will soak water when you are exposed to rain for a long time when you don't put a wax impregnation. And also pocket placment and overall constuction of jacket is outdated, in modern jackets external chest pockets are avoided because they would be uncomfortable when you wear jacket under equimpent, especialy tactical and bulletproof vests. My 6 years experience with Ubranie Ochronne wz128 (model from 2008) with gore-tex membrane copy and ability to zip into it a polar blouse, made me think that this type of jacket are more superior to m65 and its clones because. If you want to discuss about jackets, uniforms or camouflages please respond to my comment.
    Have a nice day and also happy and calm Easter.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93

      Obviously a lot of modern jackets can be better, not doubting that, but M65 jackets are great because they don't cost very much in the UK, lots of the modern replacement jackets are £100+

    • @radosawbusiak2002
      @radosawbusiak2002 6 років тому

      Yeah, the price is important when buying clothes, especially new. But sometimes you got to have a good skill in searching or luck to find new jackets or uniforms in good prices. For example I bought an italian waterproof uniform made from gore-tex clone membrane in vegetato camouflage (woodland variant) for 190PLN which will translate to around 40gbp. But finding this kinds of deals require following military picnics or sitting in front of computer spending hours on ebay and similar sites.

    • @Riceball01
      @Riceball01 5 років тому +1

      @@radosawbusiak2002 I'd argue that a cheap M65 is more than adequate for every day wear where the cons, like pocket placement, isn't a big deal since most people aren't wearing
      body in their day to day lives and most that do are wearing their body armor under their clothes, so once again pocket placement isn't an issue. However, having worn an actual USMC issu M65 during the winter in the high desert, I can tell you that they absolutely suck when it's windy. Without the liner (which isn't standard issue) the wind cuts right through the jacket and summer weight, cotton BDUs don't offer much warmth. With a wooly pully sweater under your cammies with an M65 then you'd be fine, until you go indoors to a heated environment.
      The other thing that sucked about the M65 is that, at least in my Marine Reserve unit, weren't standard issue, you had to recquisition one from supply if you wanted one. And because they weren't standard issue not everyone had one, this meant that when in formation on a cold winter's (cold being relative since I did drill in the San Diego area) morning you couldn't wear one unless everyone else had one. Luckily, wearing a wooly pully sweater underneath your cammies was permitted and really helped on those cold mornings.
