Kirk Hammett KNEE INJURY: He May NEVER WAH AGAIN!

- During a recent Metallic concert, guitarists Kirk Hammett twisted his knee and appeared to be pain, although he was able to finish the concert. What was the extent of his knee injury? Now at 60 years old, will this knee problem mean the use of his Wah pedal start to fade to black?
Original article: guitar.com/new...
Kirk will use wah pedal no matter what, even in grave
I’m sure he could get an Ozzy stand fixed to a wah.😼
His guitar tech can sit on stage and hit the wah pedal for him when he needs it if it comes down to that. If they want to find a workaround for this, they will.
LOL
Where there’s a will, there’s a wah.
It's a great loss for all of the Wah community. We need to stay strong and pray for his Wahness to come back even stronger!
Christ, don't count this guy out like some kind of overly fragile drama queen! He will find a way to compensate. This is not the end, unless they're ready to retire because they're tired of touring.
There are any number of ways around this IF they want to find a workaround.
@@le_th_ have you heard for a thing called sarcasm?
@@AtariForeva 😜😜🤣🤣👍👍
@@AtariForeva How about the Jaguar?
Oh the humanity.
As a 55 year old who damaged his meniscus 20 years ago, and finally had it 'scoped' last month, I'm going to speculate that Kirk aggravated an old injury. I finally had it scoped because I got tired of occasionally aggravating my knee and dealing with the pain for several days or weeks. My initial tear was very painful, and I was immediately laid up, so I doubt Kirk had a tear just then. Now, I'm discounting the possibility that the medical team just injected some Novocain in his knee to allow him to finish the gig. 😆 Either way, given a meniscus tear, Kirk will definitely WAH again!
I'm also a 55 year old man who had mine scoped last March. Also I have no MCL and an extremely torn ACL and I have an extremely physical job pouring concrete.. The surgeon says I need a full knee replacement, but I'm too young at 55 .. I still use my wah !!
@@mikeseadorf4952
Same deal here. I've had mine scoped twice and most of my medial meniscus is gone now. My ACL has been trimmed to the point that it's only about half there. I'll be 50 in September and they've wanted to do a replacement for 10 years but I'm too young for it. It's coming though.
@@mikeseadorf4952 Proof Kirk will WAH again, right there! Sorry to hear you'll need a full replacement, though. That won't be fun.
It’s not necessarily the age but the wear and tear you put your joints through. I had a right hip replacement at 53.
@@nomadronin7361 One of my favorites: "It's not the age, it's the mileage."
Hey max. Love the channel. I have had 6 knee surgeries on my right knee. The first one when I was 12. Been playing guitar for 40 years and use my wah all the time. Probably as much as Kirk. Lol. He will be just fine.
Leg bone connected to the foot bone, foot bone connected to the shoe bone, shoe bone connected to the wah bone!
Hello,
Great video! I have had 2 meniscus operations (right knee, left knee), due to lots of skiing and Aikido. Those operations, more than 30 years ago, were very successful and I have never had any weaknesses or instability since. Kirk will certainly recover and wow (wah) us for many more years!!!!
You said "Peter out" and climax" back to back and it was unintentionally hilarious
Kirk Hammett has not operated his pedal board in a few years. His pedal board is operated by a tech off stage. This has allowed their elaborate stages sets over the years and has allowed Kirk himself to run around the stage being that he is no longer tied down to a pedal board. Read about this recently somewhere. Look it up.
I was going to comment the same. I don’t think he’s operating most of his pedal board. He uses the wah sometimes on stage from what I’ve seen, but I don’t think he’s using it most of the time.
Love the straight face. This is April's fools material!
He don't have to use no wah pedal, just play the solo without it it's not going to kill anyone to hear it without it for once.
Except him😂
The left handed wah pedal made my brain glitch
I was thinking maybe Kirk could use a new wah without that activation button placed in the pedal, for example I have a Morley that the second you plug weight on the pedal it activates the wah. Regardless I hope Kirk makes a speedy recovery 🙏
It seems like you could build a wah that works different, maybe a touch screen you drag your foot across. Or an IR censor that controls the wah by how far something is from the censor, maybe put an IR reflector on the head of the guitar?
injured my pushing knee skateboarding when i was 17. didn't buy a wah pedal until i was 36. haven't tried it out yet because i didn't have any floor space. ten years later, i still don't know if either knee can use a wah pedal.
Morley makes a wah without an on off switch. Simply pressing down, with almost no force, activates. Lift your foot, it goes back to bypass. Easy peasy. Its called Bad Horsie. Pretty sure Vai used to use them.
Oh man, after one hell of a crappy friday at work this was the perfect antidote afterall laughter is the best medicine.
No,I laughing at Kirk's potentially career ending woes but at your masterful piece of straight faced comedy. Don't get me wrong,I've been a huge Metallica and Kirk Hammett fan since the time of And Justice.
I began playing guitar just prior, maybe less than 3 months prior to that sort of time. I love the sound of the wah as much as Kirk has become almost ironically famous for.The first time I was aware of it was when I heard Tale of Brave Ulysses by Cream, quickly followed by the version of No Quarter from SRTS (Led Zep).
I had to go out and buy a Crybaby,my very first pedal I owned even before a Distortion despite by no means being sure it was the right pedal. I bought it by mail order from an add in Guitarist magazine so couldn't try it before I bought it.I was still at school with a job a couple of evenings a week so this was something like 3 weeks wages at the time but it didn't disappoint at all.Not that I was remotely good enough to make good use of it.
I've had a number of them in the intervening years and I'm on my nth Crybaby, have the equivalent Vox version which I bought because I'd been regularly told it was superior to the Crybaby. I'm afraid I don't agree, the old V847 is ok but the GBB-95 classic Crybaby is the better Wah,in my opinion anyway.
Well, until I bought an Xotic Pedals Wah last year as that's the 'Cream' of the crop right now. I haven't tried any of the multitude of signature Vox or Crybaby Wahs on the market but sometimes you just have to stand up and admit you have a problem before you can get to grips with your toxic addictions. I'm not in control anymore,I'm no longer just a happy Wahophile,I have a destructive Wah habit and enough is enough and perhaps it's time Kirk faced his demons too.
Maybe this inopertune wounded knee is actually divine providence, who knows.
He will be fine!
🍷 cheers MAX 🍻 🥁
That's DR Guitar MAX 😅
Plot Twist: Hetfield now sings the chorus lyrics, "Master Of Puppets pulled the strings too tight on his right knee"
Potentially, quote unquote
WAIT!! Pedals aren't left or right handed.
He should take a Rick Allen-style approach to getting back into using wah pedals.
Maybe he'll be able to break his Wah dependency and develop further as a guitarist!!
I think a Bad Horsie Wah would help since it doesn't have a standard switch.
What do you mean left legged versus right legged wah? Aren’t they a matter of what the player is most comfortable with. I used to play with either foot depending what was else was going on.
More importantly, I hope Kirk is OK.
" Auto wah for the win!!" Lol
It took me a full 15 seconds to get the sarcasm. Good work. 😂
They do have digital wah pedals that do not require on/off persay
I myself use the left handed wah pedal... and it sucks just as much as the regular one
Autowah to the rescue!
Yeah...I think they sell those left legged wah pedals in the same store where you can pick up the lefthanded screwdrivers. Seriously though, most of his wah work is adequately emulated with an auto-wah. Those Boss Dynamic Filter pedals are gonna skyrocket in price as Hammett snaps 'em up! lol
I'm sure he can have a tech manually do it off stage or use MIDI and timecodes to do it for him.
Exactly what I said. Have a guitar tech sit on stage and hit the freakin' pedal if it comes down to that but, more likely, as you state, they will set it up off stage somehow. That will take some practice, timing-wise, but it's a no-brainer.
They already do that. The stage is so big he can’t always get to his wah so his tech does the wah for him.
If he seemed to be fine a few minutes after it happened. He probably just hyper extended the knee? Which would hurt at the time but not be a serious injury.
Thanks for breaking down that leg knee shoe foot pedal connection flow 😂
i had knee tendonitis for about 12 months, physical therapy like air squats and hamstring stretches fixed it though
I think you mean “infamous” for his use of the wah xD
The guitar equivalent of taking an arrow to the knee.
Nah, I tore my meniscus slightly while snowboarding and continued snowboarding for years afterwards. It depends on how severe the tear is, how strong the muscles are surrounding the knee, and how young/old the person is when the injury occurs (because you need to have good muscle strength which you lose as your hormones change with age).
It is definitely NOT the equivalent of taking an arrow to the knee, especially since he got right back up on stage and CONTINUED the performance.
@@le_th_ I was trying to make a joke, but your story was honestly pretty amazing. Thank you for sharing it.
That title is so wild 😂
I sell left handed wah pedals and blinker light fluid.
Thank God for the T Wah.
Kirk will never quit playing the wah, it’s like a 3rd arm to him. Maybe he’ll switch to Morley Wahs. Those wahs (like the Bad Horsie and Mr. Scary), offer the “switch less” feature where you simply put your foot on it to activate it. Less pressure and easier on the feet and knees. Or maybe he gets Dunlop to make him wah which takes a nod from Morley. Either way, he’ll never quit employing the wah🎸
Dunlop makes one with an “instant on” like that already, I think it’s the 535Q.
OMG ! Your killing me Max 🤪
I guess he could have one of the stagehands start to move his wah pedal backstage.
Whaaaaaat?!?!
Sucks getting old...
Poor girl.
*LOLZ. Such a humorous video.*
Dave Mustaine rn:😳😳😳😳😳
He'll have the guitar tech operate it if he can't do it anymore.
Exactly what I said, and that will only become necessary until there is a newer innovation that a high-profile injury like this will necessitate (unless one already exists that he can learn to use).
I have a left footed King Vox Wah, hand wired and true bypass. Very rare . Anyone interested, leave me a reply.
If he was smart he would do a documentary that wildly over exaggerates the extent of the damage and scope of the P.T to get back to tiptop wah capacity. Oh so many Metallica montages where the focus is just Kirk moving his right foot up and down with painful facial expressions.
The wife packs up and leaves him for a few months because she heard Slash's wah skills and starts to re evaluate her life.
It all comes back full circle when Metallica play the first show in 2 years and Kirks wah pedal is connected to every band member and stays on for 4 straight hours of full band wah... Right foot furiously flapping to what will be credited as the most technical use of wah the world will ever see.
The wife comes back.
James has a custom wahpedal shaped drag car made and it breaks the land speed record.
Lars patents snare wah and Rob gets a small wah tattoo.
Kirk Rides a Custom harley chopper into the sunset with wah exhaust.
Wah wah wah, OUCH!
His tech can control the wah for him. Tons of players use their tech for these types of purposes.
He just needs to get Brent Hinds wah wah shoes and put it on the other foot
Wah wah
Zakk Wylde is a wah man too
he will be fine, what happened to him is something more simple, in fact, the same happened to me twice, i was able to recover in less than a minute in both cases, just a little pain for one or 2 hours and that's it, his pedal leg is fine... i think this whole video is "alarmist"
For people not picking up the extremely thick sarcasm 🤯
His tech will help him.
I can use with both feet the same way... ONE AT THE TIME....
Sounds like he’s got a bad case of EWPD (Excessive Wah Pedal Disorder).
I have a left handed wah New condition. Any buyers?
Wah is in the Shoes. What kind of Shoe does Kirk wear when Wah-ing?? what's next: auto-wah?
He could use "auto-wah" even thought its not the same.
Wah pedal for that you need youre ankle not youre knee , please there is no left wah pedal
Left foot wah pedals are rare…
😂😅😁😆
A real guitarist such as Eric Johnson made the effort to prove he was as good live as he was in the studio. The man is a MONSTER player.. then you have a fool like Kirk. Who through the years show his true lack of talent in all his live performances.. kirk is medicore at best and it shows.. my arguement is what effort has he ever made live to live up to his studio sound.. any guitar center warrior can be made to sound huge coming from a state of the art studio.. any monkey can be taught to play fast and sloppy with a wah wah pedal
Wha u talkin bout willis?
Maybe he has to switch to Auto Wah...🤔
He's got wahitis.
kirks foot is surgically attached to that wah pedal
Or, he could just switch to a Morley wah.
Naahhhh, the autowah is coming
WAHt the F
F for respects. I'm sure they'll rig something up to cattle prod a roadie who in turn will wah peddle for him as needed. With extra life batteries, of course. That's a lot of prodding. And wah-ing.
Can we get Zack Wylde to step in and replace him?
Auto-Tune Auto-Wah 🔥🎸🔥
Get him to phone AC/DC and borrow Axl's throne :)
Perhaps a talk box would be an alternative to the wah, lol
Another choice would be to put his wah on a stick and use his ass to operate the wah.
Just move the pedal under his armpit and walk it off 🤞😊
The knee is one of the weakest joints in the human skeleton. Nita Strauss is still recovering from a meniscus injury she got while performing. Hope it a'' wah-ks" out for him 😏
They make auto wahs
Yeah I don't think they make left handed wahs. He will have to get a custom lefty wah . Lol
But whatever it is he's got money and time for proper care and physical therapy so I hope all will be well
Left handed wah pedal XD
Then....Kirk will start using autowah
He would wah without a foot 🦶
Get a helper monkey to work the pedal
You really could do with learning the difference between a knee and an ankle.
Because I don't use my knee to flammy my whammy.
Maybe you need to see a doctor...
His wah-wah is over used in my opinion
Wah is all he knows. After about 5 solos it gets boring
Auto wah pedal ;)
he can use T-wah 🤣😝
Its not that difficult to switch to the left foot. He also could have a guitar tech or pay a guy guy to manipulate the wah when he solos.
Guitar Max. For the past 3 years maybe 3 1/2. I'm the kind of guy that doesn't have a place to go living pretty much using my phone I've lost a lot of different phone accounts because if I would lose a phone not remember account password. I'd just start. New. What I liked about your videos i I can recognize it the item is authenticall screw your video experiences four different things like Amps pedals. I see that you do make sure you put an honest opinions out there how can I email you privately
So Kirk goes to Exodus for Rick, Gary stays with Slayer, Dave goes to Metallica for Kirk, Megadeth retires with dignity on top of the Thrash pile. Problem solved! :)
Next there’ll be Steve Harris needing a guide dog after tripping in Leeds… Unlike Argentinian strikers he immediately got back up again.🫣🙀😈
And this kids, is how the Guitar Max channel knew the same fate as Napster. Sued to extiction by Metalica. 😂
Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your knee and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master, master
🫵🏼
The day Kirk stops using a Wah is the day The Edge plays without a pedal. Never gonna happen.
Agreed. I said if it comes down to it, they will find a guitar tech to sit on stage and hit the freakin' wah pedal for him. Sure, it will take some practice to coordinate, but that is just one workaround a repetitive injury like this.
A true crisis would be an injury to his hand, writst, fingers, head trauma or spinal cord. THAT is when it's game over.
@@le_th_ Dimebag Darrell did something similar with a tech and his Whammy. Apparently if the tech messed up the band didn’t let him hear the end of it lol.
The day Kirk stops using a wah is the day Lars uses a ride again.
I am a right-handed player.....but use my left foot for wah/switching. I never understood why more players don’t do the same. The right leg is usually bearing the most of the weight and limits movement if tied to your wah. I would be glad to offer Kirk a lesson in the Art of Left-Leg wah. 🤘🤘
I'm a lefty, and I wah with my right! I've always been left handed and right footed. All I know is using your wah with the other foot than your usual one feels weird and wrong. If I was Kirk I'd go with an autowah
Cant use my right foot on the eah cause my knee is right under my guitar moving around and its awkward xD
Yes, but can he find a left-footed wah in time for their next tour?
Same bro. Same
I just use whichever foot makes it onto the wah first. I didn't realize that there was left/right shit going on. My feet are interchangeable for wah-ing
"This wah pedal is known to the state of California to contain excessive risk to the knee connected to the leg connected to the foot inside the shoe that is on the pedal. Pregnant women, persons with compromised musculoskeletal systems, and dudes over 50 who don't want their knees f***** up for life should use extensive caution."
LOLLL
Yep he is done! Time to pack it up😅
Nice to see you putting out a comedy episode.
Yes, but for pregnant women, it's mostly late-stage pregnancy when they can't SEE the wah pedal over their belly. lol
