    I'm temp-addicted to this show - I won't stop watching, over months if need be, till I've seen every single episode...
    The 'nostalgia-partition' of my heart nutrifies off these. 😅

      Eleven years later and not a single video of you reviewing videogames in a suit on your channel 😔
      You could've done something about this man!
      Just kidding, hope everything's going well for you.

    Awesome to see Sierra represented on the show again. This show is a great Historical reference. I just started watching it for the first time and I was born in 1979. I didn't know it existed.

      Perhaps the most significant historical connection this show has to computers is Stewart's co-host for many years, Gary Kildall, the inventor of what eventually became DOS. The story of his life is stuff of legend as Gary and his wife were visited at their home by executives from IBM, in hopes the Kildalls would sell exclusive rights and ownership of their operating system to IBM.
      The Kildalls and IBM could NOT agree on a deal, and as a result Microsoft CEO Bill Gates hired Seattle Computer Products programmer Tim Paterson to reverse-engineer Gary's OS which he planned to rename QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System). After this sneaky project proved successful, Gates bought QDOS from Paterson, then turned around and sold QDOS to IBM, who renamed it IBM DOS.
      IBM made millions with the sales of their new IBM PC featuring DOS and a few programs written by Microsoft. Gary Kildall got NOTHING. ☠️

      I watched it religiously back then, from mid 1980's up to early 2000's (Net Cafe). I don't think I've watched all episodes, but I'm sure I saw a majority of them. You have to remember that back then a new episode only comes once a week, so you have to wait. All other computer/electronic news came from magazines, such as Computer Shopper catalog, which I've kept a few of those from the late 1980's. So here we are now & all CC/NC episodes that ranged for 2 decades are at the touch of a button. And because of technology, now we can see new computer news once they release, & not have to wait a week or read monthly computer mags. I was also on QuantumLink, but it only lasted a month, heh. It was a taste of something Internet-like before the actual Internet became commonplace for everyone, 4-5 years after my stint on Q-Link.

      I've watched it since it started, every week on PBS. I've been watching them again here, and it's truly just amazing to see a week by week...well, chronicle, of the evolution of computers. So many things we just take for granted today, like speech in games, was absolutely mind blowing when it first came out. It's also funny to see a lot of the missteps by certain industry figureheads, like Alan Shugart stubbornly insisting that nothing would ever replace magnetic disks as the storage medium of choice. It was really a one of a kind show. Stewart and Gary were not only hosts, but Stewart created the entire show, and their enthusiasm and interest in every guest and their products was infectious. Now you'd have some disinterested dumbass zoomer saying "IT'S YA BOY" before starting and going off on idiotic tangents during the interviews and whatnot. If they did make this show today, though, it wouldn't be nearly as interesting. Computer tech is only increasing by small increments these days. The CPU is a little faster, the graphics a little better. Back then, there were absolutely MASSIVE leaps forward in technology. We went from the bleeps and bloops of the Atari 2600 to the Amiga 500 in just 10 years. The first CD-ROM game would come out just 2 years later in 1989, and that same CD could hold EVERY 2600 game ever made on it! That's incredible to think. Gaming in particular is...well, pretty much the same now as it was 10 years ago. Just a little bit better overall.

      @@MatthewLum11 so true. The DOS(Disk Operating System) allowed us to experience so much great software and games with relative ease. Thanks to Gary Kildal

      @Dorelaxen You are so right in your observation of the world. We have seen by far more change in our lifetimes than the younger generations of today by far. The 80s and 90s advancements were awesome to have experienced.

    This is a 1992 episode. Some of the products shown were released in that year: Loom CD version, King's Quest V CD version, and in the best selling list, Windows 3.1

    • @Miler97487
      @Miler97487 2 роки тому +2

      You're right it's 1992. Windows 3.1 was introduced in April 1992 so it had to be aired shortly thereafter. The closing credits did give a 1991 copyright, but it's the mention of Windows 3.1 on a best seller list that gives it away. They did show sneak peek version of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis with a 1991 copyright (the officially released version gives a 1992 copyright). Some of the games presented have been out a few months (as of airing), some of them appearing to still use EGA graphics. Wordtris was from 1991 so it was already dated by the time this episode aired in reference to Soviet history.

    The video digitalization quality of the original tape recording is fabulous. Especially the credits sequence: no stuttering or jumpy motion. Impressive. And it was does 10 years ago at that! What equipment did you folks use?
    As for the audio, right channel seems to be missing. Was this recorded in mono audio?

    I need to try virtual golf sometime. It looks fun :D Also, I think the other reason they didn't mention why it would speed up learning, is that you don't have to keep chasing down your balls. I suppose you could use a driving range for that but not as cool ^_^

It is always fun to see how Tech changed the world. Lucas Arts Games!! I loved Labyrinth and Maniac Mansion!! Actually Lucas Games in General. They were brilliant! I actually got to live all this crap from the Original Odyssey.

    I didn't follow computer news back then, is somewhat a shame. I did have a 8 bit atari and many games, during 1986-1991 or so. And my next computer was much later, in 1998, with Windows 95 and internet. Windows 95 was the worst Microsoft OS,, the most unstable operating system ever, crashing a few times every day. It's amazing how people bought a defective product and just accept it is deffective. Microsoft was a magician and made people get used to accept software problems.

    • @SWRadioConcepts
      @SWRadioConcepts 6 років тому +4

      Windows 95 was a great OS. You probably had dodgy hardware or expansion cards or incorrectly installed or buggy device drivers.

    • @oldtwinsna8347
      @oldtwinsna8347 4 роки тому +2

      Never had a single issue with Win95. Internet support was amazing compared against Win 3.1 which was a horrific pain with its Trumpet winsock.

    • @oo0Spyder0oo
      @oo0Spyder0oo 4 роки тому +1

      People always say this shit, just because your mileage was different doesn't make the OS crap for everyone else. Hardware, drivers, your inability to do stuff, could be one of many things. I can't climb Mt Everest but it doesn't make it shit.

      Sega's laserdisk effort was a bit hokey, likely because the crew didn't know as much about moviemaking as they actually needed to. ALG's "Mad Dog McCree" upped the ante somewhat.
