  • The Moon Rocket fairground ride dates back to the late 1930's and has toured the UK through to the 1980's. Privately stored and restored for decades, The Moon Rocket is reconstructed at Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre and is believed to by the only survivor to be enjoyed by the public in the UK.

    Shaw's Moon Rockets - one of the famous old-time fairground rides! I can remember when this machine used to come to the annual Xmas Carnival in Glasgow's Kelvin Hall. I can still hear the sounds of the atmosphere - sadly lost as time moved on. And a proper build-up it was too, none of this hydraulic folding-up stuff!! Great video!!

    I live in Preston in Lancashire and I remember this machine being on the Flag Market every Whitsuntide. As a child, I never had the guts to ride it, but I was in awe of those who did. In those days, fibreglass mouldings were in the future and it must have been hard, heavy and time consuming graf, to assemble one. Luckily they were in Preston for a week, so it would have been worth the effort.

    I worked on travelling funfairs for over 10 years, Some difficult rides to build up, like the skid, and other stuff but nothing like this, if you were doing two or three day fairs with this they would’ve absolutely worn you out glad I didn’t work on anything like that.

    shaws moon rocket used to be a regular visitor to Liverpools Newsham park. .as a kid I helped build it up and pull it down, as well as help out on Michael Wallis,s speedway (Ark) and wh Roberts ghost train. .it would come to Liverpool in the 1970s for 3 weeks during the school holidays. happy Day's. (.so its great seeing The moon rocket here). It looks smaller here than I remember it..

    • @mickthebass6086
      @mickthebass6086  7 років тому +3

      Hi Norman, it is much larger when stood in front, and had to be sited inch perfect to allow clearance for the building roof beams. It is a ride packed with history from the original concept through to the people who ride it today. If you get to Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre come and say hey.

      Mick Thebass..Hello.i will come and say HELLO if I visit.i have just watched the shaws moon rocket build up (again).I remember it bit by bit as it was built up..I was only in newsham park Liverpool today 17/4/18.I stopped next to the old ground. I remember exactly where this fantastic machine stood every summer and could see it in my mind. Great times for me as a kid.i lived local at the time and couldn't wait for the fair to arrive in town. I alway got a job everytime they come to Liverpool. And during the summer i travelled as far as the west Midlands during the school summer holidays with them.No harm ever come to me.but a different area back in the early 70s.i have just retired after working all my life.And I think the hard work back in my early days working with good people set me up..great times I remember fondly and will never forget.👍🙄.

    We had an Allen Hershel version of this ride at a park I worked at in the US. Sadly the park closed and I believe the ride was scrapped. I have many thanks and praises for whoever spent their time and money too save and restore this ride. It is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi, thanks for your comments. Can you remember if the Allen Hershel ride rotated clockwise or counter-clock ? The Moon Rocket has been enjoyed by many people this year at Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre, but like any grand old lady, it requires constant care and attention to keep running.

    • @thehamelsduck1600
      @thehamelsduck1600 6 років тому

      mick thebass it rotated clock wise just like this one. The cars didn’t swing like these do though.

      mick thebass at one time I had the blue prints of the ride. I’m not sure if I still have them but as I rarely throw anything amusement park related I probably do.

    Was this ride converted from the static rocket cars to swing out pods or was it like this at the start. ??

    • @mickthebass6086
      @mickthebass6086  2 роки тому

      Hi peter withers, I believe the cars were static originally, but the mounting frames were modified to allow the cars to swing out. When this modification was carried out is unknown to me.

    • @cloudusterable
      @cloudusterable 2 роки тому

      @@mickthebass6086 Apparantly from what I gather the pods and the frames where made as a separate thing altogether, the the original rocket hardware scrapped.its a shame its not in the original guise as made. As it is now its basically resembles a Matterhorn ride.

      Hi RS, This is a studio copy version (looped) of the 1983 Maniac performed by Michael Semello, and used in a movie called Flashdance. I am not sure if Michael was the original author, because a lot of 80's stuff was written on a beer mat or a fag packet. Hope this helps.

    About how many RPMs did the moon rocket do😀

    • @mickthebass6086
      @mickthebass6086  3 роки тому

      Good question. From memory, the ride has 4 set speed positions on the speed controller, and max rpm is dependent on input power ( from generator ) and load (riders). The test run max was approx 20 rpm. Hope this helps.
