“Sailing” by Christopher Cross - the perfect song to play right after an earthquake when you tell listeners to stay calm. Good thing that “I Feel the Earth Move” by Carole King wasn’t next on the music log...
Oh that would’ve sucked. There was an earthquake that happened during a hockey game somewhere were after the earthquake, they started playing that song by Carole King in the stadium.
I was in kindergarten when this happened and remember feeling the shaking early in the morning that day.
Back in the days before Cheap Channel bought KOST - there were actually live, breathing people in the studio to do their job! Nice!
marsradio Cheap Channel? WTF?
Gladys Diaz Clear Channel Radio (now IHeartRadio) acquired KOST. This company was famous for eliminating live dj’s and using their computer software to run the station. They used automation along with digital voice tracking which made it sound like a DJ was in the studio live but really wasn’t. If clear channel owned this station at the the time of this earthquake this dj wouldn’t have been on the air. That’s why they were nicknamed “Cheap Channel” for us who worked in radio at the time.
@@joej19 Spot on. Clear Channel went on an acquisition spree after station ownership limits were relaxed. The result? Commoditized radio that killed any sense of local content in favor of automation and distant, voice tracked jocks. Industry consolidation killed radio's value right when new technologies were poised to take over.
darn right.
Clear Channel ruins everything!
That was crazy af. I was a Senior in HS. i got annoyed during the day. The aftershocks kept waking me up lol
I was in the 94 Northridge Quake, and was just in the 2018 Anchorage Quake.
Oh my God
I’m here because today it is the 29th anniversary of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake!
Is 2024 today is 30th Anniversary of the '94 Quake in Northridge
I will never forget that morning....I lived in Northridge...
I was living in the West Adams area of LA and it rocked there but damage in my immediate neighborhood was zero.
I was in La Habra(lived right off the corner of Whittier Blvd & Beach Blvd) that thing hit HARD! The T.V. I had in my room flew most of the way across the room and landed next to my bed.
"Don't be alarmed, we just had a earthquake. Now find your flashlight that has the radio in it, go outside, and let this music lull you back to sleep."
Why soft rock is probably the worse thing to listen to during a disaster.
I disagree with that statement. Soft rock is maybe the best format to listen to during a disaster. The main reason is because you want to keep people as calm as possible. I think KOST did a van tastic job on handling the earthquake coverage.
Thank you for posting this. I love how KOST handled the situation: They did their jobs and didn't insight panic. Very calming and gave emergency procedures over the air. Very good broadcast.
I worked for Lance Ballance in Memphis. He is the consummate professional here. Unbelievably great job! I forgot he said he worked at KOST!
Mashala
How the heck did they stay so calm? I was freaking screaming my head off in Burbank at the time they were playing Phil Collins.
There trained to stay Calm
2015. Dang the current KOST jingles are so sappy unlike the one's here. The jingles here are beautiful!!!!!!
Watching in 2024 to mark the 30th Anniversary of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake a Magnitude of a 6.7
I Love Kost 103.5
Thanks for posting your aircheck from the Northridge Earthquake. YT is inundated with video from that day, but radio airchecks from that morning are few and far between. I'd also like to hear the airchecks from KFWB, KNX-AM, KABC-AM, and KFI from the occurrence of the main shock over the next few hours.
KNX-AM was knocked off the air for several hours.
Lance Ballance is a fantastic disc jockey. Was he KOST's overnight disc jockey back then?
You don't hear radio stations getting interrupted by earthquakes every day!
At least he wasn't "Lance Off-Ballance" during that earthquake.
I remember this station. And, I remember this earthquake, the worst one of all the earthquakes I've been in. I had a flashlight, slippers, everything needed by the bed and it was all tossed around. The lights went off, the electricity was off, all my grandma's good vintage and expensive dishes I had just put away, all broken,my front window was out, I couldn't fimd half my cats, generators sounded like bombs, my horse is running around frantic, God,I now do not live in California. Talk about having the bed or by the door, your car right outside and wearing good pjs and slippers to bed. What a horid, miserable period in life,in my life. Valium didn't even work.
Where do you live now ?
Top Yacht Rock songs of all time!
YOU CAN'T FUCK WITH CHRISTOPHER CROSS!
I was sleeping on top of a bunk bed remeber i jumped off and landed on my behind .tried to Sleep on the living room floor but after shocks kept coming . No school !!!!
Not looking forward to the next one ... I have kids now and i cant imagine what my parents felt .
Lance Balance was a good host.
Jim Baljim too, so does Dora Kendora
I was in Europe at that time, I didn't feel the earthquake

The Top of the Hour ID Jingle at 7:20 is the same one used every Christmas season during Lovesongs on the Kost
Heard some Classic KOST Jam Jingles on their Online Classic Station
7:48-8:05 Damage alert! I don’t know how this audio has been cut. I know it has to be scoped in order to avoid copyright infringement. But I don’t think this jingle can be cut.
Love songs ... IN the coast. Ha!
Im surprised they didnt play I feel the earth move under my feet right after the earthquake.
KROQ- Kevin and Bean played It's the End of the World As We Know it!
That shit was played out, but most especially in 1994. Shit song.
This sounds like Derek from all you can Vegas! I mean you’ve probably not heard of him in the past. But he is rocking UA-cam now.
What happened on KIIS FM during that day?
9:28, did KOST borrow that traffic sounder from KVIL cause it sounds like a KVIL jingles without the singing
Can BBC Radio 2 recapture the Northridge Earthquake in a radio doccumentary with these clips intermixed with 1995 hits from the charts of that time and the folks with stories related to the horrible event? I would like to hear KCBS news reporters who are still alive.
Scariest earthquake I’ve ever experienced.
If anyone can reply; what has happened to kost 103.5 this year, the jam jingles are gone, and im very concerned about christmas this year 2015. Bring back the jam and extend the holiday music past dec. 25 like last year:/🎄🎅🙏prayers.
Im happy with their (KOST) christmas songs and Ellen K but im disappointed with their jingles.
What is the song playing at the beginning?
+frednora I'm pretty sure it is Annie Lennox, Why
I don't know why but for some reason hearing that song gave me a warm feeling😍😍
Ana Johnson Its a mellow groove
Sailing by Christopher Cross
frednora it was Darude sandstorm!
9:28 What is that jingle
DewElr1 Traffic Sounder. I looked at the Jam jingles website but i couldnt find it.
@@3pointmvpshooter3000 sounds like it was originally made for 103.7 KVIL out of Dallas cause it has that "K V I L" style where it's how it's sound when sung.
Are they opened to the public at all for tours does anybody know
4:03 this is it Kenny loggins
6:52
SoCal was reeling from a major earthquake and these guys are still playing music and acting sappy... Was Mike The Showkiller in charge back then!?!? @thewoodyshow
fegelfatso they didn’t yet know how bad it was. In 94 news traveled a lot slower.
i hate earthquake
0:09 to 0:34 Kost 103.5FM went off the Air for 25 seconds due to the 6.7 Magnitude Earthquake
I hate earthquake 😂
don't like earthquake 😒 at period.
how could they play sappy soccer mom music when things were burning and people were trapped under buildings?
nomadcowatbk Because they're a music station with no ability to switch to live reports in the field and they also likely had no TV monitor in the studio either. All they could do is read news reports they know nothing about.
did they stick to their soccer mom format during the LA Riots or 9/11?
nomadcowatbk You need to take the stick out of your ass.
if this station was on the air when JFK was shot, they probably would have stuck to their elevator/minivan music format, major events are not a time for sappy music
+nomadcowatbk TROLLLLLLLLLL
Was then and still is the worst radio channel in the greater LA area.
