    Elephant Family and Me
Wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan travels to the spectacular Tsavo wilderness in Kenya to try to get closer than ever before to a wild elephant family. African elephants are one of the most dangerous animals in the world, killing more people than lions or any other predator. But Gordon believes that elephants become dangerous only because of our actions towards them.

This is a site of the David Sheldrick Wilderness Trust in Tsavo, Kenya. These are orphaned elephants who were slowly released back into the wild. Wendy the matriarch was herself an orphan. "Benjamin" is one of the head keepers there and an expert as well as surrogate parent to many of these elephants, which is why it was appropriate for him to eventually help out. This clip should have identified this place because they need donations and public support.

I honestly wish this documentary had been about Benjamin and his elephants and not just the random guy who likes elephants that came for the ride. We could have learned about DSWT, how much effort people like Benjamin put in and probably learned more intimately about the elephants as he knows all of them by name.

Not this herd - these elephants are mainly Ex orphans raised from infancy by Benjamin and other keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi and then here at Ithumba. They are released into the wild when they feel ready to go and often come back like Wendy and Galana and introduce the keepers to their wild born babies. There may also be some wild elephants who have joined their herd.

I like how the guy just came in and hurried them along like they were a herd of sheep. If I was him, I’d be terrified that they would charge at me for doing that.

They were orphaned as babies and were not educated by their mothers/ herds- so they have to learn all their survival skills from scratch. That is why they respond so well to Benjamin,he brought them up.

Rich Porter You must remember that the baby elephant is the equivalent to a human infant of just a few days/weeks old. The late Stephen Hawking was an astrophysicist, and a genius at that, but I’m certain even smart men like him would’ve performed just as poorly on equivalent mundane tasks as an infant that baby elephant displays (It’s not like human infants that are recognized as geniuses later on can all of a sudden feed themselves at 2 months old, bathe themselves, walk, etc.)
