Just 135 years ago, roughly 60 Black men and women were killed in what is now known as the Thibodaux Massacre.
Only eight of their names were read at this year's memorial. The majority of them are lost to history after their bodies were buried in an unmarked, mass grave after the shooting.
But through the descendants of survivors, their story lives on.

Thanks WWL! You should have told the whole story that led up to the uprising! You left out everything of such a complex story in local history that likely most people don’t know or won’t bother to research! Key facts are important to understanding what actually happened, like it wasn’t the whites that fired the first shot or made threats to burn down the whole town of Thibodaux a kill white women and children. It started as a labor dispute that turned out very ugly. Research people before you judge and jump to conclusions that WWL conveniently left out!

I believe they did a good job of presenting the story, because telling the entire history of the Thibodaux massacre does take time. Please take into consideration the facts of false rumors being spread during the time that heightened the fear of white people to go out and murder innocent black women, men, and children. Hope this was helpful!

Don’t let this short video be where you end your learning about this even. Begin with a Google search and find out “what else” is out there on this topic.
