I watched your video spacificley because you're a woman. It felt very empowering to watch the show. But I was looking for the perspective the show was made from. I'm glad you did. And I have high hopes for this nuanced show
I love the fact that they just show boobs and naked women so nonchalantly. Boobs are just part of a women's body and are not inherently sexual! As women i think we get weird mixed messages from society: "be proud of your body but hide it, especially if you're not attractive" Our bodies are natural and beautiful, period.
Boobs are just boobs. People with no self control turn body parts into solely sexual objects, and exclude the “not-so-attractive” ones. I understand that sexual feelings are difficult to put a leash on, as it’s natural instinct, but actions can be controlled. No one HAS to make gross comments, insult other people’s bodies, or be weird about them.
@@Oversneeze ….. As a man, I’ll let the big secret out. Men are excited by boobs! They find them sexual. I know it’s hard to believe and I shouldn’t be speaking on it since it’s a secret. For real tho, if a woman, like some in the comment section, say boobs aren’t inherently sexual, they are a fool. I get that they serve a purpose biologically, but that doesn’t mean men don’t find them sexual.
Tuca and Bertie made me extremely uncomfortable, and the reasons why became clearer in the second-to-last episode. There was a lot about Bertie that resonated with me very deeply, but in a way that made me deeply uneasy. In the second-to-last episode, I realized it's because she has many of the same trauma behaviors that I do, especially surrounding Pastry Pete. Bertie's attraction and reactions to him were uncomfortably plausible. She displayed behaviors that are common in assault survivors, and unfortunately often increase the chances of revictimization. Freezing is the most obvious one, but the subtler and sadder one is called 'undoing.' 'Undoing' is a mental state that can happen when a situation goes very wrong. It's when your brain subconsciously says "It shouldn't have happened that way. We need to try again to make the outcome better." In situations of assault, it's can happen because on some level, people believe it wouldn't have happened if they had fought harder, called for help, etc. Unfortunately, trying to undo a situation rarely works, and usually leads to more trauma, since to try to undo the dangerous situation, you have to put yourself back in a dangerous situation. I suspect this is largely why Bertie had such an interest in Pastry Pete. Since Bertie hadn't worked through the trauma of having someone experienced in her childhood hobby assaulting her, she probably saw Pastry Pete (someone experienced in her current hobby, complete with red flags for assault) and subconsciously decided she wanted to try to undo her trauma. Couple that with brains preferring the familiar over the good, and we get a solid idea of why she felt a draw to him over her healthy relationship with Speckle, and why she initially found his abusive behavior arousing.
Wow! Thank you for your insightful comment and perspective as a survivor. This helped me understand more Bertie's "attraction" to the abusive behavior she faces.
I’m sorry but please inform me. I just got done watching show and I kinda feel fucked up for not realizing that Pete is basically a weirdo. People keeps saying he assaulted her. I understand that he pushed her head in a pot on her first day of working there but did he do anything else I missed? And how did him pushing her head in the pot sexual harassment? @@Kamciaga my take on that particular scene is that its less about making a direct depiction of sexual harassment and more a symbolic approach. Its an example of Pete pushing himself onto Bertie and resurfacing past trauma that she had.
Finally a show that is relatable in terms of being a woman, it really puts things into perspective on what we deal with daily. I had a friend who got harassed so this really struck hard for me, because like Bertie I couldn’t protect her even though that’s what my intentions were.

I don’t try to make men seem like the “ inferior “ gender nor do I make women seem like the “ superior “ gender, I am neutral and all I was commenting was that this show does have relatable qualities. This show doesn’t have all bad male characters, it wasn’t trying to show men are bad, it was trying to more importantly show how being a woman is, and how we each deal with different situations and past trauma. The show was trying to be relatable for those that have been in those situations. Is it bad to talk about harassment, and other gross actions???
When this show came out, I was going through one of my lowest points this year, having nightmares and panic attacks. It really helped me to see these issues in a fun, surreal way. The storytelling was phenomenal. I'm still mad Netflix cancelled it.
I’m a man, and I adore this show. It’s important to understand that the“dude bro” knee-jerk reaction to Bertie’s line about protecting young women from men is extremely misguided. Like, guy, why are *you* taking it personally? People often speak in absolutes despite not meaning it literally, especially when emotionally distressed. Getting mad when an abuse victim paints men with broad strokes doesn’t do anything but make you seem insecure, as if you yourself are guilty of abusive behavior.
Might be that when she said protect from 'men' in like just men instead of just abusers or abusing men. People took that as annoying and already tired of a all men are disgusting misunderstood it as saying all men are abusers blah blah blah
Yes! When Bertie was stood looking at the teen girls, I was thinking “they remind me of (friends younger siblings, cousins, etc). I wish I could protect them” and then Bertie SAID IT. In that moment I felt so seen, so validated, so comforted. It made me feel the same way as when I first came out and found out that I wasn’t broken, that others were like me. I felt safe, seen, understood. It was such a key moment in making me love this show
Unfortunately I think when stuff like that is brought up, yes, something can be said about how "triggering" it is, but the other unpleasant reality is that...and I don't think anyone wants to see this...is that the most vulnerable girls actually *need* more concrete information, boundaries, and standards. And some of it won't always be nice or coddling. I've seen certain kinds of people love victim blaming... But then these same people often misunderstand what it takes to actually protect vulnerable groups of people, or see it as a personal attack "what? you don't wanna do X? You don't really like me then!" or "you're just full of yourself for not wanting Y." There's also blatantly misleading women as to what constitutes a virtuous person. (Kindness is deeper than being surface level nice.) I've seen women be told the most desperate guy that wants them is the nicest...only to be abused by that guy. Bertie's line might be mean, but that's just it. a line: why do you care about the point against what you think is you, your STATUS...more than the potential abuse victims? Like, say what you will, there's a lot of damning statistics related to intimate partner violence against women, especially young women. I've seen a trend of some men getting pissed off about the criticism of men as actually usually having no sympathy for victims of abuse; they seem more preoccupied on the idea of seeing it like a "point" being scored against their team. Not all are like this obv, it's just I wish the intent/emotions behind it were more introspected about.
TW // I guess I can sort of answer this, at least from my own perspective: I sort do get bothered by the statement that all men are bad. Despite being aware of it not applying to me as a CSA survivor it’s almost like being compared to some piece of shit. I shouldn’t have to take accountability for what other people do just because I’m the same sex, it’s uncomfortable to do so as well. Though I agree there’s a lot of fucked up men, I think to somehow put the blame on all of us is just undermining the few of us that have experienced sexual harassment. I don’t want people to blame me as a man for something I of all people should be truly against. I don’t think anyone will agree but I’m just voicing my own perspective on it.
You say it's important for women but I know it's as important for men, because we don't often see shows written from a female perspective. Daria is still one of my favorite shows for that reason. Bertie has her reasons to be wary of men but the show doesn't try to make the viewer hate men, you explained that well in your video. Anyway, too bad it got cancelled ! Not enough viewers I guess, they can't all make it. But don't worry we'll probably get to see season 2 even if the creator has to crowdfund it.

I love this show. I was so disappointed to hear that it was canceled. My husband and I would watch it together. When we watched the last episode I thought "dang there's gotta be another season." The show was so original. I love to watch anything with odd and other worldly characters like these. Anything goes in that show. Everything is so colorful and diverse. As a woman, and a person I can relate to both characters. (SPOILERS) There is Bertie imagining how she would win her promotion only to have the opposite happen in her reality. Many of us know what it is like to imagine something going so well only to have it blow up in your face. I have acted as silly and spontaneous as Tuca. I used to run around being silly to entertain myself and my more studious friends in college. I would try to be more responsible only to fall behind as they moved forward. It was a crappy feeling. That scene when Tuca gets on the bus and cries when she sees what looks like an older version of herself alone and poor really hit home for me. Anyone can look into someone else's misfortune and be looking into their own future. This is especially true when said person already feels like his/her life is passing him/her by and he/she has know idea what to do with it.I was very much like Tuca in my early twenties. Now that i'm dang near thirty I'm more like Bertie. I even started calling my husband Speckle until he got sick of it. We love our house in the boring suburbs, and we go to our boring jobs every day. We do everything together in our boring monogamous relationship. My inner Tuca is still there though. She reminds me to be myself and do whatever the flip I please. Even if everyone around me thinks I am bat-shit crazy. Long story short. This show is awesome and if Netflix feels the need to trash it I hope they at least allow it to go to another streaming service. It would give me one more reason to love Amazon.
Well i got news for you: Tuca and Bertie will get second season. And to raise the views for show, it will be aired exclusively on Adult Swim. Hopefully they wont ruin it by taking control of the show and that second season stays this perfect, since for me Tuca and Bertie is perfect role model for adult show

around the time this show came out i had been sexually harassed by a customer at work, i still feel like crap and have panic attacks thinking about it, this had never happened to me before and it still upsets me that this guy felt the need to comment on my chest and laugh while doing so even thought there is nothing sexy about my uniform and i ware bras that try to help how big my chest is. he din't touch me but the whole thing was still upsetting. more so cos my boyfriend din't fully understand (he has Asperger's so sometimes he dose not always understand emotion related stuff). but after we saw the second episode he understood why what happened was upsetting for me. this show made me feel a little better about it but most people still don't get why it upset me.

But even if it was “great boobs ya got their girl” or “wow flat as a board.” Even in old times it wasn’t really something great to say to a stranger or work associate. If a person did not ask for someone to comment on their body which is something you can’t change as easily as “words.” Then it just ain’t cool. It’s not that you’re not allowed, you have free speech, but be aware you’ll be taken as an asshole. Actions have consequences. Also, are you serious about not going outside or are you joking? Sure people might say stuff if you go outside. You might be even killed one day if you go outside. The world is unpredictable. I really loved this show, I watched it with my sister and we couldn't help but cry when Bertie's whole background story was revealed. The show came out when a whole harassment case was exposed on our university so watching all of it on a show left a really strong emotion in both of our hearts, it really helped us into speaking up for ourselves and others who are afraid to. P.d. I recently started watching BNHA and mineta is such a little sh*t, can't stand him
this show is incredible. i wish netflix would take it back for a second season, the mood balance, the dialogue, the incredible use of abstract animation, its all amazing. as a huge lover of art and expression this is top tier entertainment and i wish big companies would allow more things like this in their space.
Agreed. I'm really happy to hear Adult Swim saved it (hopefully). I wanna see more of this. I was amazed with Bojack Horseman, and I'm amazed with Tuca & Bertie just as much.
I was sexually assaulted by a close friend of mine when I was drunk. I hate him so much and want to do something to take revenge, but I am to ashamed. I already have seen season 1 of Tuca and Birdie before it happend to me. But after this incident I felt the need to watch it again and found out it now has 3 seasons. This show is such a comfort for me .
Not a woman, but when I saw this show I could immediately see why this show was important. It’s a really cool show, and even though it’s a bit too fast-paced for a lummox like me, the show’s dedication to constantly devoting its visuals to a random aesthetic whim is unquestionably impressive. It’s a got a sort of free-form, carefree, anarchic quality which cartoons are normally divorced from, due to how many literal layers of work go into the show. It’s stylistically refreshing while keeping its tone consistently inconsistent. The oscillating seriousness of the series makes it more fun and unpredictable along with the visuals. Tuca and Bertie is a perfect example of female show-runners doing just as well as their male compatriots, and making their own work more unique and proud, even though Netflix couldn’t be bothered to acknowledge that fact by giving the show a much needed season 2.
My favorite part was the Pastry Pete thing because it was the thing that I debated the most to myself about. When I watched the pot scene, I took it at face value because the scene was framed as erotic and not meant to be thought of as fucked up. (not just because she masturbates right after that part). Then a few episodes later the show shames Bertie and, by extention, the viewer, for not seeing how fucked up it was. As ballsy as I think the decision was, I don't know how I feel about the show making us feel a certain way, then making us feel bad about the way it made us feel. But my internal back and forth is why its my favorite part of the show. Great video.
Yeah that part made me feel fucked up for not seeing it as wrong the first time it happened. And just her whole attraction to PP just feels way too relatable. And the part where Dakota rightfully stood up for herself and asked Bertie why is she defending him, it really feels like similar situations I had in life and it just stuck to me.
I had to take a few hours away from the show because of that second to last episode. I had no idea it was coming and triggered some PTSD but I think that made it all the more important to me...it did it in the correct way. It took a situation like that and showed how horrible and damaging it can be. I'm so sad it got cancelled
Thankfully Adult Swim got it up and running again, I'm really excited for it. I'm really sorry to hear about what happened to you, I just hope you can heal soon, gain the strength you need to move forward in life, and be happy. We definitely need more shows like this to pop up, so that you and those that can relate with those struggles can feel at least a bit better knowing you're not alone, and that there are people out there who will legitimately help you and look out for you; but most importantly, that you can get to know yourself to the point where you can look out for yourself too, which is really important. * hugs *

I loved the show. When we finally learn about Bertie’s abuse it made me uncomfortable but in a good way if that makes sense. I’m glad to hear other women talking about it. Don’t get me wrong men have a lot of great insight for the show but it was made for women in particular. I wish my mom watched animation. She was abused as a kid and I don’t think she ever really dealt with it. She instilled in me a intense fear of being abused too, which is something I’m just finally trying to get past. Trying not to view men as potential abusers and instead as people. Abuse spans generations in unpredictable ways. My mom can’t talk about her trauma but I feel like if she was willing to watch this show it might help open the discussion. The wacky animation would put her off so she won’t but that’s why shows like this are important. Thanks for talking about it.
As a man I found elements of the show relatable as well, so would definitely not say it's just for women! I usually like things made for women anyway (probably something to do with being gay) however I watched it with my straight male roommate too and he enjoyed it. I think we both actually learned some valuable things about the female experience that we wouldn't get from any other show, all delivered in a beautifully weird and abstract animated style. So, would definitely back up that this show is for everyone!
(Male) To be honest at first I watched the complete show while high in some weed in a single night because it’s f‘n hilarious but after going through three episodes or so I really started thinking and in the last few episodes it actually got me crying and even after finishing it i was lying in my room listening to music and thinking about our system my social awareness and my career for hours until the sun came up ... a unbelievably beautiful show that I recommend to anyone who has depression social anxiety problems with their sex problems at their workspace in a relationship... all these topics are beautifully represented and talked about in a sometimes funny but always respectful manner ... and the jokes are pure Gold I definitely recommend watching it stoned 😅
I actually got my girlfriend to watch and like this show. As a guy I liked how Spencer was portrayed. He was a great guy and wasnt demonized. He is a loving and supportive boyfriend. Seeing the obstacles women have to go through is very intresting. Also Tuca and Bertie's dynamic is great.
As a dude, I felt enlightened. Without this perspective, my view on the show wouldn’t be as expansive and I wouldn’t have gotten the complete side of the characters. Thank you.

When I first started watching the show, oh, btw I'm a woman, I felt kinda uncomfortable. Mostly because it was so open about sex and stuff and I've always been a bit put off by sexual content. But as it went on I just grew to love these characters and realise I need to stop being so sex-repulsed, I may not like it, but Tuca is thriving off her lifestyle, why would I wanna do anything to stop her from being happy? ya know? Anyway I watched that episode of bojack horseman where todd comes out as asexual and suddenly it clicked why I didn't like the idea of sex lmao.
Honestly as a teenager growing up in a kind of stormy situation, this show really speaks to me (I know it’s supposed to be for adults but I think it’s kind of coping to find yourself in media and sometimes I find that in places where I wasn’t meant to be) it answers directly to my fear of growing up, to the importance of being careful with relationships because they’re supposed to be a source of happiness, how friendship and romantic relations are always a give and take and that’s why they’re hard, some times you just give and receive nothing and other times you don’t want to put out anything. It really speaks to me and it’s so nice to see that sure sometimes some topics are heavy but they’re still part of our lives so we have so there’s never that perfect moment to talk about your stuff, it’s really nice.
I also watch a lot of men talking about Tuca and Bertie but obviously, none of them mentioned this scene that you're talking about, it was one of the scenes that reasoned with me the most, it was heartbreaking and so sincere. The way she's looking at the girls having fun together and then thinking about how the world is, it hurts, it's something I think a lot of women think about, whenever I see little girls just existing and playing there's always this thought of wishing men won't hurt them. As a woman existing in one of the most dangerous countries for women, Mexico, this scene just broke my heart, I couldn't stop crying. I love this show, it was refreshing and I am so proud of the amazing art all these women share with us.
I loved this show. As a woman with an unhealthy obsession with cartoons its nice to see myself represented so well in one. Loved Bojack Horseman too, especially Diane, so go figure

To never talk because the only 2 times I talk about it she don't belive me, my mom. She never belive me. I grow up thinking my body was dirty because a stupid "cousin" touch me on my private parts. In the last weeks of 2018 I saw a post saying a "kid don't know what sexual stuff mean, they can't understand it" I understand it was not my fault. I don't even know what he was doing. She tell me to trust her. I haven't talk about it until that last time on phycologist when mom again don't belive me. Is so good can write this after so much time. This show make me feel "normal". In a way, I never think I would ever talk about this but since I wanted to be clear so can express how much I love this show. I love the show because is more real than I would want. But this happen, people don't belive. I love my mother even when I don't trust her to tell the most important things. She is good, but She fail me when most I need her. I chose to say this to a bunch of strangers on internet, is they don't belive me that don't gonna affect me. My own mom don't belive in me. Curious thing was he told me I remember ir perfectly he say "is you talk no one will belive you" he was right. Belive when a kid told you something like that. It can be a real pain is you don't.
I love this show. I’m soooo sooo glad that it doesn’t give the “all men bad” approach, cuz that doesn’t solve anything. It also helped me understand what it’s like to be a survivor of sexual assault/rape. Ive heard people talk about it but it’s always been hard for me to “understand”. I knew it was bad, but I never really knew how it could affect someone’s life like this. The show is very good at making you feel uncomfortable in a certain way. It’s a feeling I’ve never felt before, mainly because I’m a man. It’s a feeling that I wouldn’t wish on anyone else, ESPECIALLY not repeatedly. And I hate that so many women have/are/will feel this feeling. Breaks my heart to be perfectly honest.
When I first heard of Tuca and Bertie I was so excited. I always thought it's gonna be a silly, fun show but it gotten more than that as I watched more episodes. It's fun, silly, and surreal but it's also serious, and heart-breaking. As a woman myself, I am very appreciate not only theme of womanhood but also an adult animated show made by a woman. (Along with female main characters) I really find this so rare and unique--something I never seen/heard before. Usually, I've seen a lot of female representation from Japanese animation, even for adult shows. Western shows, on the other hand, made me shooked. I was so disappointed Tuca and Bertie has been cancelled. I really wished Netflix should bring another season. At least it has a long run. Anyway, I love someone like you talked about this video. I've seen guys talked about Tuca and Bertie but not as much as from a woman's perspective and I think it's great to hear what other girls would thought and say.
I really loved this show and I think it's a tragedy that it wasn't renewed. I really related to Bertie as someone who has anxiety. It isn't portrayed on TV very often and they did it very well. I loved the song "I'm losing my shit" because it did capture the feelings that I have some days when I'm feeling particularly anxious. The song was lighthearted, but still handled the topic very seriously.
On rewatch, I also love how the show can remain funny while never trivializing any of its issues. I like that the joke they make in the jelly lakes clip you showed was about giant crabs, and nothing that takes away from the impact of the scene.
As a woman this show seemed great for me. I just love that womean are given you know PERSONALITY and normal situations every woman faces. Mostly there is like a bunch of men and one woman that represents "them all". I watched it like a year ago so I dont remember much, but I was hoping for second season
I watched this show like 3 times, first when I was alone, second with girl firend and thirt with my boyfriend and at the end he asked me "Is being women really that hard?" and we talk about dayly strugles I have cuz Im a women It helped him better understands my world
Men dont have shelters like women do Men are less cared about if their poor than women. Also men cant Express themself emotionally as women and are seen as pedophiles if the want to aplly as teacher for a job. And women can falsly accuse men of rape and not have in impact in their lives. Boys are mocked upon of they cry to Express there emotions whereas girls are encouraged to. Also if a women attacks and or kills a person she it will be recognized as self defense even if the person is innocent.

I absolutely adore Tuca and Bertie (EDIT: am no longer man, still hello) from the great character design and voice acting, the fantastically written and absurd humor with a refreshingly bright colour palette, and respected how well it handled the more serious elements the show wanted to present. Pastry Pete is genuinely insidious and his slow introduction and eventual reveal as a manipulative abuser made me extremely unsettled. It shows how even in such small or niche things such as being a bakers apprentice, an abuse of power is a truly awful thing.
I just love that show. Tbh, I found Bertie a bit more relatable despite me being a man. Although, I never been violated. I sometimes feel violated. I have anxiety issues as a result of depression, I always think I feel like trash, I felt like a scumbag whenever someone put me down, I have issues coming to terms of my sexuality (I felt accepted as Bi at times). I felt uncomfortable and very distrustful towards people, especially the ones I know, unless to a few friends who I trust. I have trust issues, but sometimes I felt I let myself vulnerable and found myself thinking about potential dangers the outside world has for me. I feel like a horrific wreck. I sometimes wonder if I am even human. I just love seeing women standing up for themselves. I really appreciate it.
I’ve always been afraid people but men scare me most. My dad is great but my mom has been abused by nearly every man that’s been in her life. I don’t hate men & always try to be nice to them, I just get nervous and shy. Bertie was very relatable to me in some ways & it made me wish I had a Tuca.

I loved the show especially as a “young” teen. The animation styles and the way it changes to represent different times in their life was very interesting to me. Like when I first watched it I never really paid attention to it until a different breakdown I’m of the show mentioned it and it really made me view the show differently. I love the bright colours OML. This is one of the few shows I can watch on repeat tbh sucks that that’s the only season unless they find a new network :/
When I watched the first episode, I noticed its theme is mostly about women’s problems today. I’ve seen lots of ”modern feminists” and all kinds of stupid things they’ve done so I thought to myself ”Is this going to be something about manspreading or some other bullshit”, despite the thoughts I had, I forced myself to watch it since the animation was similar to Bojack Horseman (one of my fav shows) and now I can say it did pretty well showing the problems women nowadays have. Even without doing that, I’m sure I’d have loved the show. It’s got great characters and magnificent creativity. Hoping for the 2nd season.
I'm a woman and the first thing I noticed in Tuca and Bertie was how me and my friends were so much like the main character, it felt almost weird to how it always took womanhood from an insider's perspective. The next thing that stood out to me was how comfortable it was talking about mature subject matter in a way I hadn't seen before, sex, nudity and masturbation was not a big deal. Like I wasn't being sat down to talk about the elephant in the room but something that naturally came up between close friends.
I haven't watched the show yet, but just this video gave me this sense of relief. I love that you actually focused on women and what our perspectives mean to us, instead of treating the show like a teaching tool for men. We should be able to talk about these things without having to add a gazillion disclaimers that "not all men", but that's not the internet we're on, so I'm glad you address the dudebros with the exhaustion they deserve, instead of trying to make your whole video comforting to guys.

I’m a man but I liked the serious “women” parts of the show. But I thought the comedy was too ridiculous and it just wasn’t for me. I would watch a season 2 because bojack horseman season 1 is pretty shit as well but the rest is just amazing.

Watching this show was sort of difficult one for me to get through but the storytelling was so genuine that I was able to get over some of the things I had difficulty connecting with.
The show made me very very uncomfortable at first. (am woman btw) I just didn't like seeing all the women's body figures clearly shown. I felt exposed just watching it. (I fear that might be why it got canceled). But I guess I'm just very not used to seeing women portrayed as women. They're always either hyper sexualized or hidden behind a tomboy personality and baggy clothes and the whole fact they're women ignored. I don't think I've ever seen (even though it's animated) women portrayed AS women, like their bodies are just how women's bodies are shaped. It's not sexualized or hidden. It just is. And it made me uncomfortable because it's ALWAYS been sexualized if it's shown, and it's what I was expecting.
I love the fist season of Tuca and Bertie and have no doubts that next season will be just as good. I must say that your review of it has given it even more depth and dimensions than I realized. Now I love the show even more. Thanks for the fresh perspective!
This is an accurate, well thought out review. You touched on all the topics so well, and I also felt uncomfortable about the same scenes, but not in a way I didn't enjoy, per se. It was that discomfort that makes one think back on any/all similar experiences, in hopes of being better prepared on how to confront those demons if they ever arise again, in a civil, mature way. Like, Dakota's scripting there in that scene with Pastry Pete was on point. She removed herself from that situation perfectly, then had discourse with Bertie that makes the audience open their eyes. Anyways, well done review! Can't wait for season 2 on Adult Swim!!
I thought it was an alright show, but the energy the show has just isn't for me. It feels too high energy going what feels like a thousand miles a minute, especially any scene with Tuca, and that just isn't my cup of tea.
I'm still mad that Netflix didn't want to continue it. I really enjoyed the show's more humorous elements on top of the serious topics that were discussed. Shows like this and Bojack that can balance humour and serious discussions are needed as the serious topics can be digested easier with the sprinklings of humour whilst also getting the point across effectively.

I checked out this show after hearing nothing but praise for it being a show by women for women and I gotta say the most relatable character for me as a woman was Speckle lol On the one hand I'm glad more shows are making women feel heard/seen bc that's awesome! On the other hand shows like this are always hard to watch for me. Personally I find nothing relatable in this show from my own perspective, it just made me feel "other". I really hope that this show either gets picked up by another network and continued or more shows like it are made, it'll give me at least a little bit of hope at finding a "by women for women" show with at least one character I can relate to (I can dream)
@@vivvy_0 Well for starters I'd really love to see more neurodiverse women! The amount of autistic men in media vastly outweighs that of women mostly bc no one ever really thinks of it as something a woman can have, in real life female autism is hard to detect bc young girls are able to mask/hide their symptoms better and thus are seen as "normal", most never get tested until far into adulthood or if at. Seeing more positive representation of all neurodiversities regardless of gender is important but seeing it from a woman's perspective would be so refreshing! I know they'll never do this but personally I'd love to see at least one female character with gynophobia or at the very least social ineptitude w other women. It's very niche and would not have wide appeal at all but it's a fresh perspective that has never been done before (to my knowledge). To expand, I was bullied (physically and emotionally) by the same group of women from middle school/high school and to this day I find it extremely hard to form relationships with women. I still greatly struggle with "fitting in" in terms of femininity as my role models were my older brother and my male peers. Shows like Tuca and Bertie which center on a supportive group of women are foreign to me, they're great for the majority of women who can experience that type of closeness but for me much is lost in translation. Again this all is so personal to me and so niche that I doubt media for it exists or will exist but hypothetically speaking I would love more female centered shows that don't express closeness with womanhood as a given, if that makes sense. I'm sorry if this comes across as too vague, I'm trying to articulate as best I can what I find missing but I can't really pinpoint what specifically it is as I can only speak from the perspective of someone who grew up without womanhood and I'm very much an outsider looking in :,)
Thanks for doing this review! I watch a lot of reviews usually after watching a series and yours was the first one I watched. Indeed I think most of them are made by men and it was horrible to see that ShadyDoorags, one of the youtubers, completly missed the point of the abused and literally started defending both the cock and Pete, questioning the victim's autenticty in the abuse. We need more women to speak up!
I saw a review of this show by a man, and he said that this show made him see things from a female perspective, and sort of understand what kinds of things women go through. I thought that was really good, and applaud this show for accomplishing that.
So glad I found this review three years later - this quickly became one of my favorite shows EVER and I really don't understand why it struggled to find an audience/why Netflix trashed it so quickly.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started watching it, but I ended up loving the way they address important topics that go on in the real world, all while having amusing animation with creative humor. It kinda blew me away, I even ended up crying watching the Jelly Lake episode because I'm a nervous wreck like Bertie. Then I realized just how much more I could relate to her in a heart-breaking way, and so can so many other people. I think the show is doing a great job portraying mental health and how trauma can effect someone.
I know I'm not really in the position to say this speaking as both a man and someone who's never experienced SA directly but. As someone who had to experience their friends suffering sex abuse trauma online, part of Bertie's talk at the lake really resonated with me cause... I guess if you've witnessed or even learned of shit like this when you're young, it's so easy to think "I should've stopped it" or wish you could stop other kids from going down the wrong rabbit holes and getting victimized... when really you were just a kid. Of course you weren't able to do anything. It makes you feel so fucking powerless. I am so glad though that this show shows that people who've gone through that stuff or had to witness it aren't "broken" or anything. They can heal and lead normal healthy lives
I relate to this a lot. The helplessness and feelings of inadequacy in not protecting the people you care for, or innocent people can be very overwhelming.
On the whole body topic in animation. I like that Speckle has a very average body too. Sure eye candy is nice but sometimes its just nice to see a regular dude
Well, I don't quite have the resources to make a UA-cam video, but I can comment! Tuca and Bertie is an amazing show. I think what's striking is that it deals with dark themes just as maturely as BoJack Horseman, but is infectiously optimistic. There's no sinking feeling of disgust at the world after you watch Tuca and Bertie, no second-hand sadness from the translation of themes into real life. Tuca and Bertie tackles difficult parts of life, and tells you that you CAN get through them. I love the female perspective the show presents, and its upfront feminism, and its refusal to objectify any of its characters. It's wrong to expect of it the same as BoJack Horseman, though - they're different shows, with different strengths. For one, it is far, far more absurdist. That admittedly put me slightly off of it in the first few episodes, but I think they improve their handling of such in the rest of the season. The use of colour throughout is fantastic; it's an absolute marvel to watch. Although I can't say I relate in large amounts to Tuca or Bertie, their experiences are insightful, and understandable. Their presentation of certain topics throughout the show was incredibly tasteful, and hard-hitting. I haven't seen a lot of negative responses, of which I'm sure there are many, but I don't think it would be a viable argument to say that this show is sexist against men. There are characters of all sorts, and the negative role isn't exclusive to the male ones, nor is the positive exclusive to the female. I am so, so sad that it's going to be another two years before we get the second season of this masterpiece. Fuck Netflix.
BB Hoody Lisa has said before that she’s going to continue to try and get a season 2. It’s not very well canned if it can just be taken out of the can, is it? Until it’s definitively done (give it two years so that it could potentially actually air a second season) it’s not canned.
BB Hoody it’s not ‘cancelled’ only until then, it’s always going to have been cancelled. This isn’t about its chances of coming back, however, it’s about whether it’s still being worked on and produced. Since the creator has said she’s still going to try to continue it (and I imagine she is) it’s not been canned yet. Once she gives up on it, then it will have been canned.
Watching this show was amazing. It really touched me and I could relate to it in a way I never thought I could relate to something. A show, a show that revolves around women, shows and talks about things in a realistic way, shows the problem we women have without putting men down also is something I've needed to watch for a long time. It's such an amazing show
I recently watched it, Tuca and I have a lot in common regarding struggling with connections and confidence in achievements. Judgment from Family is the hardest and I admired Tuca for standing up to her auntie. Birdie reminds me of friends that came from that type of dark trauma. The show reminded me why you should be proud of things even if you don't feel grand yourself.
something i also really enjoyed was just how real all the characters felt, like there was a specific moment (spoilers) after tuca and bertie had been fighting after tucas surgery where tuca was walking home and bertie was driving away that they ran into eachother on the road and their exchange felt so like, real to me for some reason. honestly, all of it feels so real, aside from obviously exaggerated or over the top stuff, but yknow what i mean. not even a relatable show to me, but definitely an important and interesting one that deserves to have its voice heard.
I felt weird when watching the show at first. But after getting more into if I really related to Bertie. I especially like to rewatch the episode where Tuca helps Bertie stand up to talk about sexual assault in her workplace. It shows that women are really oppressed in the real and fictional world. I love this show even with its weird episodes it's still something that shows what it's really like to walk in the shoes of women.
I know this video came out two years ago, but I wanted to add my two cents anyway. I’m pretty sure Tuca has undiagnosed ADHD, or is at least heavily ADHD coded. The messy room, the impulsivity, the inability to focus or hold down a full-time job, all seem very familiar. ADHD is also chronically underdiagnosed in women and AFAB folks. I was hoping they’d explore that in the second season, but unfortunately it seems not
While Bojack Horseman felt like a show mostly aimed at men, Tuca and Bertie feels like a show aimed at women, with the intent that both can enjoy either show. I relate a lot to this show, especially to Tuca’s struggling relationship with Figgy in later seasons and how I see myself and my fiancée back when we were having difficulties. I feel like this show is everything I ever wanted in an adult animated comedy
I’m a girl. I haven’t experienced sexual harassment (lucky me) but of course I’m surrounded by disrespectful men all the time. I also hear a lot of this new “it’s hard to be a man” thing and I’m so triggered by it! Try walking around the street with boobs and then tell me what’s harder. I’m not beautiful or attractive by any means and yet men still try to... you know... from time to time. I’m really doing my best to stay unnoticed but they are always hunting. I’m also not hating on all men here, just trying to express how uncomfortable some of them make me (and all of us) feel.

Watching this show hit in a deeply personal way, especially compared to bojack horseman (I started the series right after a bojack rewatch) while both series deal with things I've experienced (sexual abuse/trauma+depression/suicidal ideation) tuca and Bertie was one of a very small list of media that addressed and framed those topics in a way that felt...... female. There's this level of understanding felt in tuca and Bertie that most shows addressing the same topic , but written/produced by men, haven't been able to reach for me. Something about the framing, the attitude, the energy used to discuss those topics feels more personal in tuca and Bertie than in most other shows. I feel like we have gotten used to men writing women and their stories and thei trauma as relayed to them, so there's always this detached energy, but tuca and Bertie doesn't have that.
Tuca and Bertie really comforted me through my own struggles with my past CSA and SH in the workplace. It made it feel like I was less alone, which I am not! But like with Bertie's high school friends; some people you can't talk to without being it belittled as gross and "why did you let it happen?"
Speckle is great! I love that guy. He's like so understanding and patient. Some times unreal, It makes me think of how women sees a good boyfriend in their minds without idealizing him. Is not easy for him, but he always looks like he's trying his best.
As a woman I was also dissapointed when looking for reviews and only seeing men talk about it I'm talking about stuff that happened in the other 2 seasons too! BTW @MelonTee do an updated review if you feel like it!! At the start of the series I hated Bertie but at the end I saw that I just hated her because she reminded me of myself and how others may perceive me. I was also SA as a young teen (although no to the extent that bertie has suffered) this has strained my relationships with partners but it filled me with so much hope seeing Speckle be so respectful even though he doesn't understand it fully. Bertie being able to love and be loved in a healthy relationship is beautiful and something that needed to be seen by SA victims. It touches upon a lot of sensitive subjects really well and discusses many of the things women have to go through without the ''all men are trash'' perspective. It also talks about mental health, therapy and other things that are rarely shown in a day-to-day basis (Abusive relationships, alcoholism, tuca's adhd, anxiety, bertie's libido...) It's an amazing show and something I needed to see Thank you for reviewing the show, it warms my hearts to see others that have been touched by this show.
.....Disappointment when an audience of people who the show desparately tries to offer a perspective to, for more sympathy/understandings/compassion towards women, actually comes forward and talks about how much they liked it...

Lisa Hannawalt is brilliant. I loved all the mix matched art styles she uses to visually convey different emotions. It really helps add texture to the story telling. I was so sad to hear it cancelled. Maybe another streaming service will pick it up? I hope we get to see more of her work
I appreciate feminist shows where the first instinct isnt to say fuck all men, instead It opens it up to multiple things such as yes there are bad men like pastry Pete and her co worker making that comment to her but also amazing guys who would go out of their way for friends and loved ones like speckle and the horse guy who mind you traveled 12 hours to help tuca I wanna also make a video about this since I'm almost done with tuca and Bertie Side note: I love how openly bisexual tuca is, I relate to her character the most, but also with her wanting to be in a relationship, she wanted to be with the women not because oh tuca has dated enough men, let's get a women, no, she has issues regardless. And it opened something more to tuca in I think the one of the few scenes that actually made me cry, when she wants to be with her but she changes herself for her and kara doesn't want to change herself. And the moment tuca realizes with the whole dance sequence with bertie is amazing. It was good for tucas character and was something I related to, wanting to be with someone but you both have disagreements or differences, I saw that I was thinking different and didn't want that, now when ever I feel that way I think about it, I talk to the other person. I just love tuca. And final way I related to her was with figgy, she has a close someone who's dealing with substance abuse same as with her aunt, she didn't know how to go about it but cares about them but also cares about herself enough to not bend over for someone who doesn't want to change themselves Rant over this show is amazing

Thank you for your review, while I watch and love many channels by men that focus on tv/movies reviews...I really need to hear other women's voices. Just the fact that female bodies are drawn in way that makes them feel like regular characters instead of objects of desire is so important and you don't notice this until you see these characters!
As a male who’s really into writing I really appreciate this show for giving such an easy to understand REAL demonstration on such serious topics. In no way did it feel contrived & easily opened my eyes to a new perspective. This kind of thing is literally love most about storytelling. Also very refreshing to finally hear a women’s take on this show
I relate to Bertie so much. After coming into the workforce at 20 years old, not only finding the only good paying job at a terrible factory at the time I experienced all the reason's I think why most women become so angry and distrustful of anyone when they are older, the sexual harrasement and downplaying of your feelings in dire situations, wanting to move ahead but then being thrown back down because your seen as either too young and dumb or just because your a woman they don't believe you would have the skill to handle a higher position of power. Even dating can be belittling at times. There are great guys out there but trying to be just yourself without judgement is so much harder as an adult.

I love the fact that they just show boobs and naked women so nonchalantly. Boobs are just part of a women's body and are not inherently sexual! As women i think we get weird mixed messages from society: "be proud of your body but hide it, especially if you're not attractive"

Boobs are just boobs. People with no self control turn body parts into solely sexual objects, and exclude the “not-so-attractive” ones. I understand that sexual feelings are difficult to put a leash on, as it’s natural instinct, but actions can be controlled. No one HAS to make gross comments, insult other people’s bodies, or be weird about them.

As a man, I’ll let the big secret out. Men are excited by boobs! They find them sexual. I know it’s hard to believe and I shouldn’t be speaking on it since it’s a secret.
For real tho, if a woman, like some in the comment section, say boobs aren’t inherently sexual, they are a fool. I get that they serve a purpose biologically, but that doesn’t mean men don’t find them sexual.
Tuca and Bertie made me extremely uncomfortable, and the reasons why became clearer in the second-to-last episode. There was a lot about Bertie that resonated with me very deeply, but in a way that made me deeply uneasy. In the second-to-last episode, I realized it's because she has many of the same trauma behaviors that I do, especially surrounding Pastry Pete.
Bertie's attraction and reactions to him were uncomfortably plausible. She displayed behaviors that are common in assault survivors, and unfortunately often increase the chances of revictimization. Freezing is the most obvious one, but the subtler and sadder one is called 'undoing.'
'Undoing' is a mental state that can happen when a situation goes very wrong. It's when your brain subconsciously says "It shouldn't have happened that way. We need to try again to make the outcome better." In situations of assault, it's can happen because on some level, people believe it wouldn't have happened if they had fought harder, called for help, etc. Unfortunately, trying to undo a situation rarely works, and usually leads to more trauma, since to try to undo the dangerous situation, you have to put yourself back in a dangerous situation. I suspect this is largely why Bertie had such an interest in Pastry Pete. Since Bertie hadn't worked through the trauma of having someone experienced in her childhood hobby assaulting her, she probably saw Pastry Pete (someone experienced in her current hobby, complete with red flags for assault) and subconsciously decided she wanted to try to undo her trauma. Couple that with brains preferring the familiar over the good, and we get a solid idea of why she felt a draw to him over her healthy relationship with Speckle, and why she initially found his abusive behavior arousing.
Wow! Thank you for your insightful comment and perspective as a survivor. This helped me understand more Bertie's "attraction" to the abusive behavior she faces.

I understand that he pushed her head in a pot on her first day of working there but did he do anything else I missed? And how did him pushing her head in the pot sexual harassment? @@Kamciaga my take on that particular scene is that its less about making a direct depiction of sexual harassment and more a symbolic approach. Its an example of Pete pushing himself onto Bertie and resurfacing past trauma that she had.
Finally a show that is relatable in terms of being a woman, it really puts things into perspective on what we deal with daily. I had a friend who got harassed so this really struck hard for me, because like Bertie I couldn’t protect her even though that’s what my intentions were.

When this show came out, I was going through one of my lowest points this year, having nightmares and panic attacks. It really helped me to see these issues in a fun, surreal way. The storytelling was phenomenal.

I’m a man, and I adore this show. It’s important to understand that the“dude bro” knee-jerk reaction to Bertie’s line about protecting young women from men is extremely misguided. Like, guy, why are *you* taking it personally? People often speak in absolutes despite not meaning it literally, especially when emotionally distressed. Getting mad when an abuse victim paints men with broad strokes doesn’t do anything but make you seem insecure, as if you yourself are guilty of abusive behavior.

Yes! When Bertie was stood looking at the teen girls, I was thinking “they remind me of (friends younger siblings, cousins, etc). I wish I could protect them” and then Bertie SAID IT. In that moment I felt so seen, so validated, so comforted. It made me feel the same way as when I first came out and found out that I wasn’t broken, that others were like me. I felt safe, seen, understood. It was such a key moment in making me love this show

Unfortunately I think when stuff like that is brought up, yes, something can be said about how "triggering" it is, but the other unpleasant reality is that...and I don't think anyone wants to see this...is that the most vulnerable girls actually *need* more concrete information, boundaries, and standards. And some of it won't always be nice or coddling. I've seen certain kinds of people love victim blaming...
But then these same people often misunderstand what it takes to actually protect vulnerable groups of people, or see it as a personal attack "what? you don't wanna do X? You don't really like me then!" or "you're just full of yourself for not wanting Y." There's also blatantly misleading women as to what constitutes a virtuous person. (Kindness is deeper than being surface level nice.) I've seen women be told the most desperate guy that wants them is the nicest...only to be abused by that guy.
Bertie's line might be mean, but that's just it. a line: why do you care about the point against what you think is you, your STATUS...more than the potential abuse victims? Like, say what you will, there's a lot of damning statistics related to intimate partner violence against women, especially young women.
I've seen a trend of some men getting pissed off about the criticism of men as actually usually having no sympathy for victims of abuse; they seem more preoccupied on the idea of seeing it like a "point" being scored against their team. Not all are like this obv, it's just I wish the intent/emotions behind it were more introspected about.

I sort do get bothered by the statement that all men are bad.
Despite being aware of it not applying to me as a CSA survivor it’s almost like being compared to some piece of shit.
I shouldn’t have to take accountability for what other people do just because I’m the same sex, it’s uncomfortable to do so as well.
Though I agree there’s a lot of fucked up men, I think to somehow put the blame on all of us is just undermining the few of us that have experienced sexual harassment.
I don’t want people to blame me as a man for something I of all people should be truly against.

You say it's important for women but I know it's as important for men, because we don't often see shows written from a female perspective. Daria is still one of my favorite shows for that reason. Bertie has her reasons to be wary of men but the show doesn't try to make the viewer hate men, you explained that well in your video. Anyway, too bad it got cancelled ! Not enough viewers I guess, they can't all make it. But don't worry we'll probably get to see season 2 even if the creator has to crowdfund it.

I love this show. I was so disappointed to hear that it was canceled. My husband and I would watch it together. When we watched the last episode I thought "dang there's gotta be another season." The show was so original. I love to watch anything with odd and other worldly characters like these. Anything goes in that show. Everything is so colorful and diverse. As a woman, and a person I can relate to both characters. (SPOILERS) There is Bertie imagining how she would win her promotion only to have the opposite happen in her reality. Many of us know what it is like to imagine something going so well only to have it blow up in your face. I have acted as silly and spontaneous as Tuca. I used to run around being silly to entertain myself and my more studious friends in college. I would try to be more responsible only to fall behind as they moved forward. It was a crappy feeling. That scene when Tuca gets on the bus and cries when she sees what looks like an older version of herself alone and poor really hit home for me. Anyone can look into someone else's misfortune and be looking into their own future. This is especially true when said person already feels like his/her life is passing him/her by and he/she has know idea what to do with it.I was very much like Tuca in my early twenties. Now that i'm dang near thirty I'm more like Bertie. I even started calling my husband Speckle until he got sick of it. We love our house in the boring suburbs, and we go to our boring jobs every day. We do everything together in our boring monogamous relationship. My inner Tuca is still there though. She reminds me to be myself and do whatever the flip I please. Even if everyone around me thinks I am bat-shit crazy.
Long story short. This show is awesome and if Netflix feels the need to trash it I hope they at least allow it to go to another streaming service. It would give me one more reason to love Amazon.

I really loved this show, I watched it with my sister and we couldn't help but cry when Bertie's whole background story was revealed.
The show came out when a whole harassment case was exposed on our university so watching all of it on a show left a really strong emotion in both of our hearts, it really helped us into speaking up for ourselves and others who are afraid to.

Not a woman, but when I saw this show I could immediately see why this show was important.
It’s a really cool show, and even though it’s a bit too fast-paced for a lummox like me, the show’s dedication to constantly devoting its visuals to a random aesthetic whim is unquestionably impressive. It’s a got a sort of free-form, carefree, anarchic quality which cartoons are normally divorced from, due to how many literal layers of work go into the show. It’s stylistically refreshing while keeping its tone consistently inconsistent. The oscillating seriousness of the series makes it more fun and unpredictable along with the visuals.
Tuca and Bertie is a perfect example of female show-runners doing just as well as their male compatriots, and making their own work more unique and proud, even though Netflix couldn’t be bothered to acknowledge that fact by giving the show a much needed season 2.
My favorite part was the Pastry Pete thing because it was the thing that I debated the most to myself about. When I watched the pot scene, I took it at face value because the scene was framed as erotic and not meant to be thought of as fucked up. (not just because she masturbates right after that part). Then a few episodes later the show shames Bertie and, by extention, the viewer, for not seeing how fucked up it was. As ballsy as I think the decision was, I don't know how I feel about the show making us feel a certain way, then making us feel bad about the way it made us feel. But my internal back and forth is why its my favorite part of the show.

Yeah that part made me feel fucked up for not seeing it as wrong the first time it happened. And just her whole attraction to PP just feels way too relatable. And the part where Dakota rightfully stood up for herself and asked Bertie why is she defending him, it really feels like similar situations I had in life and it just stuck to me.
I had to take a few hours away from the show because of that second to last episode. I had no idea it was coming and triggered some PTSD but I think that made it all the more important to me...it did it in the correct way. It took a situation like that and showed how horrible and damaging it can be. I'm so sad it got cancelled
Thankfully Adult Swim got it up and running again, I'm really excited for it.

We definitely need more shows like this to pop up, so that you and those that can relate with those struggles can feel at least a bit better knowing you're not alone, and that there are people out there who will legitimately help you and look out for you; but most importantly, that you can get to know yourself to the point where you can look out for yourself too, which is really important.

I loved the show. When we finally learn about Bertie’s abuse it made me uncomfortable but in a good way if that makes sense. I’m glad to hear other women talking about it. Don’t get me wrong men have a lot of great insight for the show but it was made for women in particular. I wish my mom watched animation. She was abused as a kid and I don’t think she ever really dealt with it. She instilled in me a intense fear of being abused too, which is something I’m just finally trying to get past. Trying not to view men as potential abusers and instead as people. Abuse spans generations in unpredictable ways. My mom can’t talk about her trauma but I feel like if she was willing to watch this show it might help open the discussion. The wacky animation would put her off so she won’t but that’s why shows like this are important. Thanks for talking about it.
As a man I found elements of the show relatable as well, so would definitely not say it's just for women! I usually like things made for women anyway (probably something to do with being gay) however I watched it with my straight male roommate too and he enjoyed it. I think we both actually learned some valuable things about the female experience that we wouldn't get from any other show, all delivered in a beautifully weird and abstract animated style. So, would definitely back up that this show is for everyone!
(Male) To be honest at first I watched the complete show while high in some weed in a single night because it’s f‘n hilarious but after going through three episodes or so I really started thinking and in the last few episodes it actually got me crying and even after finishing it i was lying in my room listening to music and thinking about our system my social awareness and my career for hours until the sun came up ... a unbelievably beautiful show that I recommend to anyone who has depression social anxiety problems with their sex problems at their workspace in a relationship... all these topics are beautifully represented and talked about in a sometimes funny but always respectful manner ... and the jokes are pure Gold I definitely recommend watching it stoned 😅
I actually got my girlfriend to watch and like this show. As a guy I liked how Spencer was portrayed. He was a great guy and wasnt demonized. He is a loving and supportive boyfriend. Seeing the obstacles women have to go through is very intresting. Also Tuca and Bertie's dynamic is great.
As a dude, I felt enlightened. Without this perspective, my view on the show wouldn’t be as expansive and I wouldn’t have gotten the complete side of the characters. Thank you.

Anyway I watched that episode of bojack horseman where todd comes out as asexual and suddenly it clicked why I didn't like the idea of sex lmao.

Honestly as a teenager growing up in a kind of stormy situation, this show really speaks to me (I know it’s supposed to be for adults but I think it’s kind of coping to find yourself in media and sometimes I find that in places where I wasn’t meant to be) it answers directly to my fear of growing up, to the importance of being careful with relationships because they’re supposed to be a source of happiness, how friendship and romantic relations are always a give and take and that’s why they’re hard, some times you just give and receive nothing and other times you don’t want to put out anything. It really speaks to me and it’s so nice to see that sure sometimes some topics are heavy but they’re still part of our lives so we have so there’s never that perfect moment to talk about your stuff, it’s really nice.
I also watch a lot of men talking about Tuca and Bertie but obviously, none of them mentioned this scene that you're talking about, it was one of the scenes that reasoned with me the most, it was heartbreaking and so sincere. The way she's looking at the girls having fun together and then thinking about how the world is, it hurts, it's something I think a lot of women think about, whenever I see little girls just existing and playing there's always this thought of wishing men won't hurt them. As a woman existing in one of the most dangerous countries for women, Mexico, this scene just broke my heart, I couldn't stop crying.

In a way, I never think I would ever talk about this but since I wanted to be clear so can express how much I love this show. I love the show because is more real than I would want. But this happen, people don't belive. I love my mother even when I don't trust her to tell the most important things. She is good, but She fail me when most I need her.

I love this show. I’m soooo sooo glad that it doesn’t give the “all men bad” approach, cuz that doesn’t solve anything.
It also helped me understand what it’s like to be a survivor of sexual assault/rape. Ive heard people talk about it but it’s always been hard for me to “understand”. I knew it was bad, but I never really knew how it could affect someone’s life like this.
The show is very good at making you feel uncomfortable in a certain way. It’s a feeling I’ve never felt before, mainly because I’m a man. It’s a feeling that I wouldn’t wish on anyone else, ESPECIALLY not repeatedly. And I hate that so many women have/are/will feel this feeling.

When I first heard of Tuca and Bertie I was so excited. I always thought it's gonna be a silly, fun show but it gotten more than that as I watched more episodes. It's fun, silly, and surreal but it's also serious, and heart-breaking. As a woman myself, I am very appreciate not only theme of womanhood but also an adult animated show made by a woman. (Along with female main characters) I really find this so rare and unique--something I never seen/heard before. Usually, I've seen a lot of female representation from Japanese animation, even for adult shows. Western shows, on the other hand, made me shooked. I was so disappointed Tuca and Bertie has been cancelled. I really wished Netflix should bring another season. At least it has a long run. Anyway, I love someone like you talked about this video. I've seen guys talked about Tuca and Bertie but not as much as from a woman's perspective and I think it's great to hear what other girls would thought and say.

I really loved this show and I think it's a tragedy that it wasn't renewed. I really related to Bertie as someone who has anxiety. It isn't portrayed on TV very often and they did it very well. I loved the song "I'm losing my shit" because it did capture the feelings that I have some days when I'm feeling particularly anxious. The song was lighthearted, but still handled the topic very seriously.

On rewatch, I also love how the show can remain funny while never trivializing any of its issues. I like that the joke they make in the jelly lakes clip you showed was about giant crabs, and nothing that takes away from the impact of the scene.

I absolutely adore Tuca and Bertie (EDIT: am no longer man, still hello) from the great character design and voice acting, the fantastically written and absurd humor with a refreshingly bright colour palette, and respected how well it handled the more serious elements the show wanted to present. Pastry Pete is genuinely insidious and his slow introduction and eventual reveal as a manipulative abuser made me extremely unsettled. It shows how even in such small or niche things such as being a bakers apprentice, an abuse of power is a truly awful thing.
I just love that show. Tbh, I found Bertie a bit more relatable despite me being a man. Although, I never been violated. I sometimes feel violated. I have anxiety issues as a result of depression, I always think I feel like trash, I felt like a scumbag whenever someone put me down, I have issues coming to terms of my sexuality (I felt accepted as Bi at times). I felt uncomfortable and very distrustful towards people, especially the ones I know, unless to a few friends who I trust. I have trust issues, but sometimes I felt I let myself vulnerable and found myself thinking about potential dangers the outside world has for me. I feel like a horrific wreck. I sometimes wonder if I am even human. I just love seeing women standing up for themselves. I really appreciate it.
I’ve always been afraid people but men scare me most. My dad is great but my mom has been abused by nearly every man that’s been in her life. I don’t hate men & always try to be nice to them, I just get nervous and shy. Bertie was very relatable to me in some ways & it made me wish I had a Tuca.

I loved the show especially as a “young” teen. The animation styles and the way it changes to represent different times in their life was very interesting to me. Like when I first watched it I never really paid attention to it until a different breakdown I’m of the show mentioned it and it really made me view the show differently. I love the bright colours OML. This is one of the few shows I can watch on repeat tbh sucks that that’s the only season unless they find a new network :/
When I watched the first episode, I noticed its theme is mostly about women’s problems today. I’ve seen lots of ”modern feminists” and all kinds of stupid things they’ve done so I thought to myself ”Is this going to be something about manspreading or some other bullshit”, despite the thoughts I had, I forced myself to watch it since the animation was similar to Bojack Horseman (one of my fav shows) and now I can say it did pretty well showing the problems women nowadays have. Even without doing that, I’m sure I’d have loved the show. It’s got great characters and magnificent creativity. Hoping for the 2nd season.

I'm a woman and the first thing I noticed in Tuca and Bertie was how me and my friends were so much like the main character, it felt almost weird to how it always took womanhood from an insider's perspective.
The next thing that stood out to me was how comfortable it was talking about mature subject matter in a way I hadn't seen before, sex, nudity and masturbation was not a big deal. Like I wasn't being sat down to talk about the elephant in the room but something that naturally came up between close friends.

I haven't watched the show yet, but just this video gave me this sense of relief. I love that you actually focused on women and what our perspectives mean to us, instead of treating the show like a teaching tool for men.
We should be able to talk about these things without having to add a gazillion disclaimers that "not all men", but that's not the internet we're on, so I'm glad you address the dudebros with the exhaustion they deserve, instead of trying to make your whole video comforting to guys.
Spooky Skeletons Ye, it’s funny how men get all pissy when women criticize sexism in their media like how women are portrayed in videogames, and they say “Oh well you’re not the target audience, it wasn’t _made_ _for_ _you”_ but when women have something made for and by themselves, all of a sudden the same men are all like “Not all men you stinky feminists!!! Stop trying to demonize males!!!”

I’m a man but I liked the serious “women” parts of the show.
But I thought the comedy was too ridiculous and it just wasn’t for me.
I would watch a season 2 because bojack horseman season 1 is pretty shit as well but the rest is just amazing.

Watching this show was sort of difficult one for me to get through but the storytelling was so genuine that I was able to get over some of the things I had difficulty connecting with.
The show made me very very uncomfortable at first. (am woman btw) I just didn't like seeing all the women's body figures clearly shown. I felt exposed just watching it. (I fear that might be why it got canceled). But I guess I'm just very not used to seeing women portrayed as women. They're always either hyper sexualized or hidden behind a tomboy personality and baggy clothes and the whole fact they're women ignored. I don't think I've ever seen (even though it's animated) women portrayed AS women, like their bodies are just how women's bodies are shaped. It's not sexualized or hidden. It just is. And it made me uncomfortable because it's ALWAYS been sexualized if it's shown, and it's what I was expecting.
I love the fist season of Tuca and Bertie and have no doubts that next season will be just as good. I must say that your review of it has given it even more depth and dimensions than I realized. Now I love the show even more. Thanks for the fresh perspective!

This is an accurate, well thought out review. You touched on all the topics so well, and I also felt uncomfortable about the same scenes, but not in a way I didn't enjoy, per se. It was that discomfort that makes one think back on any/all similar experiences, in hopes of being better prepared on how to confront those demons if they ever arise again, in a civil, mature way. Like, Dakota's scripting there in that scene with Pastry Pete was on point. She removed herself from that situation perfectly, then had discourse with Bertie that makes the audience open their eyes. Anyways, well done review! Can't wait for season 2 on Adult Swim!!
I thought it was an alright show, but the energy the show has just isn't for me. It feels too high energy going what feels like a thousand miles a minute, especially any scene with Tuca, and that just isn't my cup of tea.
The female friendship in this show is a delight.
I'm still mad that Netflix didn't want to continue it. I really enjoyed the show's more humorous elements on top of the serious topics that were discussed. Shows like this and Bojack that can balance humour and serious discussions are needed as the serious topics can be digested easier with the sprinklings of humour whilst also getting the point across effectively.

I checked out this show after hearing nothing but praise for it being a show by women for women and I gotta say the most relatable character for me as a woman was Speckle lol
On the one hand I'm glad more shows are making women feel heard/seen bc that's awesome! On the other hand shows like this are always hard to watch for me. Personally I find nothing relatable in this show from my own perspective, it just made me feel "other". I really hope that this show either gets picked up by another network and continued or more shows like it are made, it'll give me at least a little bit of hope at finding a "by women for women" show with at least one character I can relate to (I can dream)

@@vivvy_0 Well for starters I'd really love to see more neurodiverse women! The amount of autistic men in media vastly outweighs that of women mostly bc no one ever really thinks of it as something a woman can have, in real life female autism is hard to detect bc young girls are able to mask/hide their symptoms better and thus are seen as "normal", most never get tested until far into adulthood or if at. Seeing more positive representation of all neurodiversities regardless of gender is important but seeing it from a woman's perspective would be so refreshing!
I know they'll never do this but personally I'd love to see at least one female character with gynophobia or at the very least social ineptitude w other women. It's very niche and would not have wide appeal at all but it's a fresh perspective that has never been done before (to my knowledge). To expand, I was bullied (physically and emotionally) by the same group of women from middle school/high school and to this day I find it extremely hard to form relationships with women. I still greatly struggle with "fitting in" in terms of femininity as my role models were my older brother and my male peers. Shows like Tuca and Bertie which center on a supportive group of women are foreign to me, they're great for the majority of women who can experience that type of closeness but for me much is lost in translation. Again this all is so personal to me and so niche that I doubt media for it exists or will exist but hypothetically speaking I would love more female centered shows that don't express closeness with womanhood as a given, if that makes sense.
I'm sorry if this comes across as too vague, I'm trying to articulate as best I can what I find missing but I can't really pinpoint what specifically it is as I can only speak from the perspective of someone who grew up without womanhood and I'm very much an outsider looking in :,)
Thanks for doing this review! I watch a lot of reviews usually after watching a series and yours was the first one I watched. Indeed I think most of them are made by men and it was horrible to see that ShadyDoorags, one of the youtubers, completly missed the point of the abused and literally started defending both the cock and Pete, questioning the victim's autenticty in the abuse. We need more women to speak up!
I saw a review of this show by a man, and he said that this show made him see things from a female perspective, and sort of understand what kinds of things women go through. I thought that was really good, and applaud this show for accomplishing that.
So glad I found this review three years later - this quickly became one of my favorite shows EVER and I really don't understand why it struggled to find an audience/why Netflix trashed it so quickly.

I think it's incredibly important to have characters like bertie- soceity tricks itself into thinking abuse isn't common. But it really is.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started watching it, but I ended up loving the way they address important topics that go on in the real world, all while having amusing animation with creative humor. It kinda blew me away, I even ended up crying watching the Jelly Lake episode because I'm a nervous wreck like Bertie. Then I realized just how much more I could relate to her in a heart-breaking way, and so can so many other people. I think the show is doing a great job portraying mental health and how trauma can effect someone.
I know I'm not really in the position to say this speaking as both a man and someone who's never experienced SA directly but. As someone who had to experience their friends suffering sex abuse trauma online, part of Bertie's talk at the lake really resonated with me cause... I guess if you've witnessed or even learned of shit like this when you're young, it's so easy to think "I should've stopped it" or wish you could stop other kids from going down the wrong rabbit holes and getting victimized... when really you were just a kid. Of course you weren't able to do anything. It makes you feel so fucking powerless.
I am so glad though that this show shows that people who've gone through that stuff or had to witness it aren't "broken" or anything. They can heal and lead normal healthy lives
I relate to this a lot. The helplessness and feelings of inadequacy in not protecting the people you care for, or innocent people can be very overwhelming.
On the whole body topic in animation. I like that Speckle has a very average body too. Sure eye candy is nice but sometimes its just nice to see a regular dude

Tuca and Bertie is an amazing show. I think what's striking is that it deals with dark themes just as maturely as BoJack Horseman, but is infectiously optimistic. There's no sinking feeling of disgust at the world after you watch Tuca and Bertie, no second-hand sadness from the translation of themes into real life. Tuca and Bertie tackles difficult parts of life, and tells you that you CAN get through them.
I love the female perspective the show presents, and its upfront feminism, and its refusal to objectify any of its characters. It's wrong to expect of it the same as BoJack Horseman, though - they're different shows, with different strengths. For one, it is far, far more absurdist. That admittedly put me slightly off of it in the first few episodes, but I think they improve their handling of such in the rest of the season. The use of colour throughout is fantastic; it's an absolute marvel to watch.
Although I can't say I relate in large amounts to Tuca or Bertie, their experiences are insightful, and understandable. Their presentation of certain topics throughout the show was incredibly tasteful, and hard-hitting.
I haven't seen a lot of negative responses, of which I'm sure there are many, but I don't think it would be a viable argument to say that this show is sexist against men. There are characters of all sorts, and the negative role isn't exclusive to the male ones, nor is the positive exclusive to the female.
I am so, so sad that it's going to be another two years before we get the second season of this masterpiece. Fuck Netflix.

BB Hoody Lisa has said before that she’s going to continue to try and get a season 2. It’s not very well canned if it can just be taken out of the can, is it? Until it’s definitively done (give it two years so that it could potentially actually air a second season) it’s not canned.
BB Hoody it’s not ‘cancelled’ only until then, it’s always going to have been cancelled. This isn’t about its chances of coming back, however, it’s about whether it’s still being worked on and produced. Since the creator has said she’s still going to try to continue it (and I imagine she is) it’s not been canned yet. Once she gives up on it, then it will have been canned.
Watching this show was amazing. It really touched me and I could relate to it in a way I never thought I could relate to something. A show, a show that revolves around women, shows and talks about things in a realistic way, shows the problem we women have without putting men down also is something I've needed to watch for a long time. It's such an amazing show
I recently watched it, Tuca and I have a lot in common regarding struggling with connections and confidence in achievements. Judgment from Family is the hardest and I admired Tuca for standing up to her auntie. Birdie reminds me of friends that came from that type of dark trauma. The show reminded me why you should be proud of things even if you don't feel grand yourself.
something i also really enjoyed was just how real all the characters felt, like there was a specific moment (spoilers) after tuca and bertie had been fighting after tucas surgery where tuca was walking home and bertie was driving away that they ran into eachother on the road and their exchange felt so like, real to me for some reason. honestly, all of it feels so real, aside from obviously exaggerated or over the top stuff, but yknow what i mean.

I felt weird when watching the show at first. But after getting more into if I really related to Bertie. I especially like to rewatch the episode where Tuca helps Bertie stand up to talk about sexual assault in her workplace. It shows that women are really oppressed in the real and fictional world. I love this show even with its weird episodes it's still something that shows what it's really like to walk in the shoes of women.
I know this video came out two years ago, but I wanted to add my two cents anyway. I’m pretty sure Tuca has undiagnosed ADHD, or is at least heavily ADHD coded. The messy room, the impulsivity, the inability to focus or hold down a full-time job, all seem very familiar. ADHD is also chronically underdiagnosed in women and AFAB folks. I was hoping they’d explore that in the second season, but unfortunately it seems not
While Bojack Horseman felt like a show mostly aimed at men, Tuca and Bertie feels like a show aimed at women, with the intent that both can enjoy either show. I relate a lot to this show, especially to Tuca’s struggling relationship with Figgy in later seasons and how I see myself and my fiancée back when we were having difficulties. I feel like this show is everything I ever wanted in an adult animated comedy
I’m a girl. I haven’t experienced sexual harassment (lucky me) but of course I’m surrounded by disrespectful men all the time. I also hear a lot of this new “it’s hard to be a man” thing and I’m so triggered by it! Try walking around the street with boobs and then tell me what’s harder. I’m not beautiful or attractive by any means and yet men still try to... you know... from time to time. I’m really doing my best to stay unnoticed but they are always hunting. I’m also not hating on all men here, just trying to express how uncomfortable some of them make me (and all of us) feel.
How would you know which is harder? When you haven't experienced being a man?

It‘s frustrating how talking about things like that often gets brushed off with „hating men“.
Watching this show hit in a deeply personal way, especially compared to bojack horseman (I started the series right after a bojack rewatch) while both series deal with things I've experienced (sexual abuse/trauma+depression/suicidal ideation) tuca and Bertie was one of a very small list of media that addressed and framed those topics in a way that felt...... female.
There's this level of understanding felt in tuca and Bertie that most shows addressing the same topic , but written/produced by men, haven't been able to reach for me. Something about the framing, the attitude, the energy used to discuss those topics feels more personal in tuca and Bertie than in most other shows.
I feel like we have gotten used to men writing women and their stories and thei trauma as relayed to them, so there's always this detached energy, but tuca and Bertie doesn't have that.
Tuca and Bertie really comforted me through my own struggles with my past CSA and SH in the workplace. It made it feel like I was less alone, which I am not! But like with Bertie's high school friends; some people you can't talk to without being it belittled as gross and "why did you let it happen?"
Speckle is great! I love that guy. He's like so understanding and patient. Some times unreal, It makes me think of how women sees a good boyfriend in their minds without idealizing him. Is not easy for him, but he always looks like he's trying his best.
As a woman I was also dissapointed when looking for reviews and only seeing men talk about it

At the start of the series I hated Bertie but at the end I saw that I just hated her because she reminded me of myself and how others may perceive me. I was also SA as a young teen (although no to the extent that bertie has suffered) this has strained my relationships with partners but it filled me with so much hope seeing Speckle be so respectful even though he doesn't understand it fully. Bertie being able to love and be loved in a healthy relationship is beautiful and something that needed to be seen by SA victims.
It touches upon a lot of sensitive subjects really well and discusses many of the things women have to go through without the ''all men are trash'' perspective. It also talks about mental health, therapy and other things that are rarely shown in a day-to-day basis (Abusive relationships, alcoholism, tuca's adhd, anxiety, bertie's libido...) It's an amazing show and something I needed to see

Lisa Hannawalt is brilliant. I loved all the mix matched art styles she uses to visually convey different emotions. It really helps add texture to the story telling. I was so sad to hear it cancelled. Maybe another streaming service will pick it up? I hope we get to see more of her work
I appreciate feminist shows where the first instinct isnt to say fuck all men, instead It opens it up to multiple things such as yes there are bad men like pastry Pete and her co worker making that comment to her but also amazing guys who would go out of their way for friends and loved ones like speckle and the horse guy who mind you traveled 12 hours to help tuca

Side note: I love how openly bisexual tuca is, I relate to her character the most, but also with her wanting to be in a relationship, she wanted to be with the women not because oh tuca has dated enough men, let's get a women, no, she has issues regardless. And it opened something more to tuca in I think the one of the few scenes that actually made me cry, when she wants to be with her but she changes herself for her and kara doesn't want to change herself. And the moment tuca realizes with the whole dance sequence with bertie is amazing. It was good for tucas character and was something I related to, wanting to be with someone but you both have disagreements or differences, I saw that I was thinking different and didn't want that, now when ever I feel that way I think about it, I talk to the other person. I just love tuca. And final way I related to her was with figgy, she has a close someone who's dealing with substance abuse same as with her aunt, she didn't know how to go about it but cares about them but also cares about herself enough to not bend over for someone who doesn't want to change themselves

Thank you for your review, while I watch and love many channels by men that focus on tv/movies reviews...I really need to hear other women's voices. Just the fact that female bodies are drawn in way that makes them feel like regular characters instead of objects of desire is so important and you don't notice this until you see these characters!
As a male who’s really into writing I really appreciate this show for giving such an easy to understand REAL demonstration on such serious topics. In no way did it feel contrived & easily opened my eyes to a new perspective. This kind of thing is literally love most about storytelling. Also very refreshing to finally hear a women’s take on this show
I relate to Bertie so much. After coming into the workforce at 20 years old, not only finding the only good paying job at a terrible factory at the time I experienced all the reason's I think why most women become so angry and distrustful of anyone when they are older, the sexual harrasement and downplaying of your feelings in dire situations, wanting to move ahead but then being thrown back down because your seen as either too young and dumb or just because your a woman they don't believe you would have the skill to handle a higher position of power. Even dating can be belittling at times. There are great guys out there but trying to be just yourself without judgement is so much harder as an adult.
