ELIZABETH, NJ - Responding to a Major Commercial Building Fire on Trumbull Street
Plumes of dark smoke were visible miles away.
A massive fire engulfed a warehouse on Trumbull Street. The blaze was first reported around 5:30 a.m. by a passerby and quickly escalated, causing part of the structure to collapse and generating thick smoke visible as far as Staten Island.
The industrial complex, known as Elizabeth Industrial Park, houses multiple businesses on the south end of Newark Airport. The fire started in building F6 and spread to several other buildings within the complex. More than 100 firefighters responded to the scene, but the bitterly cold temperatures and icy conditions posed challenges in extinguishing the flames. Firefighters were initially set back by numerous dead fire hydrants at the complex. One sidewall and two roofs collapsed during the course of the fire. The FDNY also sent a fireboat to assist in battling the blaze from the water.
Fortunately, no one was inside the buildings at the time of the fire, resulting in no serious injuries. The buildings on fire are situated behind a two-block-long street-side structure that dates back to 1900 and once housed the Singer Sewing Machine Co. This iconic building is a staple in the area and holds historical significance. If the fire involves toys, it’s important to note that plastics can be toxic when burned, so firefighters take precautions even when working outside the affected area.
The intensity of the fire, fueled by heavy timber beams and columns, requires a substantial amount of water to extinguish. The incident remains a significant event in the city’s history, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of Elizabeth, New Jersey.
