i got some trp notebooks from nanami in early 2020, cafe note grid and ruled. the ruled notebook feels soft and nice, which i assume is the old trp. the grid notebook however felt cheaper and rougher. I'm not sure if the grid was new trp because that was before the announcement of trp being discountinued.
I got a couple of samples from Dave at Nanami and I agree with your assessment. It definitely feels different and I doubt it's truly 52 GSM anymore. Either way, I ONLY use fountain pens (no paints or markers and very minimal high lighting). What I've found is that the ink dries a little darker on the new paper. the lines aren't as crisp either. The lines don't feather....but it's not as crisp when comparing it to my old 2017 and 2018 notebooks. Shading is still good as you've mentioned, but I find that sheening inks don't sheen as well. I've used some Organics studio inks and while the sheen IS visible, it's not the same as the old TRP. I've heard people say that the ghosting is worse on the new paper, but I haven't found that to be true. In fact, I think it's better. All and all, I will continue to use the paper. In fact, I JUST bought 2 A6 Cafe Notes and a back up B6 Slim grid from Nanami as they're back in stock. I'm also tempted to make a 2nd order for the Crossfields...but I'm just not really an A5 notebook fan.
I too have a new trp book and the level of ghosting is sad 😢 I don’t have much choice but to get over it but I am not very thrilled by the new paper. I may be looking at trying some new stuff.
Maybe we should think of it as an adventure in stationary?! Boldly going where no man has gone before 🤣😜 but yeah I miss that quilted feel old Written on TRP got.
Oh no...I’m a devout TRP user from 2012...can 2020 get any worse?!?! 😳
Right?!! Irregardless was added the to dictionary as a word this year too 😒. Have you noticed a change in TRP in notebook you’re bought from different years?
Has the change taken place already? What makes you think you have the new paper--just curious. Thanks.
I used a TRP notebook I bought years ago (like 2016-2017ish) as a journal in June/1st half of July 2020 and then switched from that book when I finished it, to a new TRP notebook I bought in July 2020 for the second half of July. The pages feel different and the ink reacts different. Not completely bad different, but different and noticeable.
Thanks for the video and timestamps! Here’s an article about the new TRP. The Wonderland222 planner and journals are fabulous and they have the new TRP identified as 52gsm N so we can distinguish and know for certain which we got. I like that the more wet fountain pen inks dry a bit faster on the new trp. wonderland222.com/blogs/news/new-tomoe-river-paper-52n
Great and thorough video. I don't like the creamy color of the new TR. I can relate to having many ink samples. I would be nice to see a pen test with some of your saturated ink and how it behaves on the new TR. New subscriber.
Yay!! Thank you 💜 I’ll put an ink test on my video list. Fountain pen ink collections are like rabbits...😜
Interesting. I just loved you petting these notebooks. hahahah I have noticed a difference. I just thought I was going crazy. Lol
It’s a thing isn’t!! To just pet the paper. Delicious 💜 thanks for watching!!
I thought the change was next year, but that might have been for Jibun only? I’ll have to read the article again 🤔 I could be wrong.
Sadly they pulled the article. I recall them saying it could have already happened. And then on a forum there was speculation that this was why Jibun switched to their thin paper this year. Have you noticed a difference in your TRP books bought over time?
Quasi Thoughts I’ll pull out my past books and compare the paper to the books I bought this year and let you know.
You can see the comment from Tomoegawa paper.

I love the blush pink TWSBI. I want one! Lol.
Oh thank you!! I think it was an asian release along with the light blue. You can find it on eBay sometimes or fountain pen BST groups. I think I paid around $40-45 for it. More than a US released TWSBI Eco, but I thought it was worth it for the color. Thank you for watching 💜
Where did you buy the Tomoe River paper franklin and how much are they? Thanks.
Hi!! Thanks for watching, I bought it on Amazon.jp. I think it was around $40 with shipping but that can change with exchange rate. I have a video on it and a link in the description. 💜
Why compare to stalogy paper that is not trp?
Hey thanks for watching. I’m not sure I understand your question. I compare a nanami that I estimate I bought in 2015 to a nanami I bought in 2020 and to a stalogy. I included it because I was currently using one and the new paper is kinda in between.
They took the article down.
Oh interesting. Was there a retraction? Or was it untrue? I was able to find it in a google search.
Thanks again!! I added some other forum links to discussions on the article to the description.
@@quasithoughts1040 If you look on google the article is still "cached" by google. I found it just now and read it. Thanks for your insights on all this.
I'm not a TRP user, nor a fountain pen user....but I'm a stationery fan. :)
