I went high school with Nate...I met him, he was in a band called Diddly Squat. Quiet guy I think. I was friends with the guitar player in that band (Jason Cobb, RIP.)
Nate’s sense of time is one of THEE best things about him. His style of bass playing is incredible and needs to be celebrated way more... and I’m not a bass player... hah.
Agreed.Sonic Highways was the coolest for the Foos. Nate needs an album number 2 after the tour . He was playing a solo at the MKE concert with the Foos, and Dave teased him that it was ,” so 90’s” . It was , and it was great 👍
The Lieutenant album is great. On my second run through now. On "Sink Sand" and yeah, this is different. Love the brass and the doubling of his voice works really well. Honestly makes me think imagine what SDRE could do if all this creative evolution and maturity could be applied to a new SDRE album 🤔
Honestly there was a band . it means more than just diddy squat... do you remember how many records you guys got from getting albums from tours? I do and we are all still in this struggle together.
Really hoping to hear something about Sunny Day... Got to meet you guys at Metro in Chicago when you opened for Shudder to Think. I was the jerk who spent their set in your green room, smoking that collapsible bong and waxing philosophic about Diary. I always hated Foo Fighters... always blamed Dave for breaking up Sunny Day Real Estate. (Edit) I actually bought & enjoyed the first Foo Fighters record. Even wrote a physical fan letter and sent it through the label. That's when I figured it was just a side project, and Nate & William would be back in the studio with Sunny Day. Refused to buy the other albums though. Not one 😁
Didnt they break apart around 1995 and then dave approached will and nate to join? Or are you referring to the fact that Nate was always held up with the foos so he never returned to Sunny Day to record? Because he actually told dave he was going to leave around the time of there was nothing left to lose and dave was mad because that left just him and taylor but was fine with it, nate then regretted it and said he wanted to come back, so yeah, it’s really up to nate himself lol
2:47 That actually is not true... It depends on whether you are influential or not in the band, and Nate clearly is not, in Foo Fighters. Just think about Tim C or Flea...
I always feel bad for Nate. You can tell he got to do some fun and unconventional stuff with Sunny Day only to be in the Foo Fighters where it's super conventional and commercial, and IMO boring. The money seems nice but not having artistic outlet is no fun.
@@langdonalger9219 Success doesn't mean anything except a good paycheck, which I said in my comment is nice. He has no real creativity in the band though. He always says he's told to make his bass lines more simple whereas in Sunny he was free to be himself. Success doesn't mean anything if it comes at the cost of artistic integrity which the Foo Fighters don't have.
His bass from colour and the shape up until one by one was great. I remember reading an interview in 05 it was in your honour was when Nate started to get reigned in and play a bit more steady.
@@Chris-yj2di the problem with your argument, is that you’re assuming he’s not enjoying himself in Foo Fighters, and unless you know him, there’s no way to know if that’s true. I get what you’re saying about having more control as an artist, but you shouldn’t assume he isn’t enjoying himself in his current band.
Great to hear Nate speak without the typical interruptions (Dave).

This is a fundamental interview. I am glad that Nate talked about himself, his project and musical journey. I’m going now to listen to Lieutenant👍🏾
This guy is special. I really like him.
Nate is pretty cool too.

Great interview. More about Nate than the foos. Touched on a lot of key issues but didn't make it all about Dave. Great to hear this from Nate
Nate is a great man
Nate's the man
Nate Mendel: **says he's not the best bass player**
Also Nate: **the first two SDRE albums**

Pretty cool guy. I heard parts of his record and there's potential there. A shame they don't let him do more on FF.
Made him a multi millionaire.

That interviewer was great.
This is the first time I would tell someone to drink less water

Reminds me of Dan Auerbach.
Yes i know! Mixed with Ricky Gervais:)
only about a zillion times cooler..
Holy crap so much mouth sound, its like both of you are eating sloppy joes in my ears! Those mics need filters!
+GooseZen hahahaha
lol, there is a whole genre of videos based on those sounds called ASMR. Actually pretty relaxing.
There is no "filter" on earth that would fix that. Different mic? Maybe.

Grohl keeps Nate chugging root notes. Hes actually a great bassist. It just doesnt show in the foos
8:35 What??? Sonic Highways was written wayy before the actual HBO series... it's fake that they wrote them on the spot.. lol.
The Wedge No, they wrote the music before they actually recorded them. It was the LYRICS that were written on the spot by dave, did you even watch it?

Yep, gotta feel bad for a guy who gets to be in one of the most successful bands of the last 25 years. Poor guy.

@@shaun64vet Yeah, which is sad. I hope he can get some more side projects going where he can actually express himself.

Get the hair out of your eye. It's hard to look at.
