Love the old graphics...filmy white letters and numbers, peeled orange segments at half-time...no kicking tees, players scooping up handfuls of dirt!...Alan Marks commentary, Rex Mossop audible from the next card table...Tigers went on to upset Souths next week with future South Sydney secretary Terry Parker throwing the last pass to Sid Williams for the match-winning and only try of grand final...Balmain 11 Souths 2.
I absolutely cut my teeth watching the Saturday evening replays on the ABC. Funny to see over 50 years ago, players still giving totally stupid penalties
He hated Canterbury too. And us Berries fans hated him right back! The day came when they didn’t dare send him to Belmore, they sent Col Pierce instead.
Conceded that Page only had to count to 4 but in 1978 Hartley seemed to have a problem getting to 6 particularly when Parra had the ball and missed a tackle or two when Manly had the ball on a number of occasions and this is all well documented. Hartley was a show pony who thought he was a bigger star than the players.
@@joevass5172 He allowed 7-tackle tries against the Bulldogs too, one of them in a semi-final, although it didn’t change the outcome. Tbf “Hollywood” really was a bigger attraction than many players. After he retired I was at a match refereed by the pedantic Jack Danzey. His rulings were accurate, but he made the game so dull that the fans - of both sides - started chanting, “Bring back Hartley!”
@@joevass5172 parra still can't get over that. You know when Manly played Canterbury in the 95 GF, Canterbury scored 2 tries off 7 tackles and 1 from a BLATANT knock on. Did we whinge....noooo. Parra had a history of whinging in fact did you notice when Melbourne lost those premierships due to salary cap wrought parra was the only club to demand they be given the title. Manly got ripped off as well but copped it on the chin.
That yelling bloke from Channel 9 - this is how you commentate
Some top players there. Everyone except South fans were going for the Tigers in the GF and they produced a massive upset.
Great camera work. You can see the sweep of the game. Modern camera work changes view every 4-7 seconds. Drives you nuts.

At other grounds players used to get a pile of sand to kick with, but never on the SCG
Ah Balmain the lay down sally's
League was better in those days. Anyone disagree?
St Johns Ambulance doing the medical work, pure Rugby League at its best
Yes players having to play on with broken jaws or badly concussed because there were no replacements.. Good times lol
I'm not sure it was better - 32 penalties, lots of missed goal kicks, and those messy scrums!
Love the kicks for goal, no foreign matter allowed on the SCG so dig a divot place and kick old school front on ..........
You can hear Rex commentating in the next booth!
I remember watching it on tv in 1969
Keith Page ref. Always looked like Dracula with his collar turned up.
Nothings changed. Manly stealing defeat from the jaws of victory😢.
The 4 tackle rule, which later was increased to 6.
No Arthur Beetson for Balmain but they still did it, champions.
Great find here !!!
Thanks. I hope UA-cam doesn’t block it.
@@tomytiger20 Why would they block it ?
Because they’ve recently blocked “BRUTAL HITS
… ”. I’m sure their reasons are valid, so whatever the copyright rules are I’m happy to abide by.
@@tomytiger20 Okay man , , it happens i guess .

frank staanton super coach
Contested scrums!
Page also hated manly. Did we whinge like Parra did about Hartley. Noooooo.
The scrum penalties in this era were dubious.

fulton who was
When I was little I used to think Bill Hamilton was the worst player ever...
Not far wrong.
I agree get rid of the yelling bloke
Allan Marks is better than Ray Warren
Way better,I’ve disliked warrens commentary since the 1970s ,so glad he’s retired let’s hope Gus is next and soon
@brucethomas5123 what about Rex Mossop's?
