On their A350 yes, but their 787 seating is much better. We really loved VN, but just wish they offered a 787 option all the way from Australia to Europe.
I flew Vietnam through to LHR business from SYD & the A350 is far quieter than the 787. Love the view from the Skyteam lounge at SYD too, av-geeks heaven! Another awesome vid.
I have flown with VN Airlines on the B787 and A350 in Premium Economy Mel-Hcm..Just comparing seats, I prefer the 787 as it has the 2-3-2 configuration and to me feels more 'premium'....the cabin and the seats in the 787 feels and appears more spacious and bigger than the PE in the A350.
Great video Paul, as a regular PE flyer on this route (and the MEL SGN route), premium economy passengers actually get to check in the Sky Priority lane in SYD regardless of status. MEL has a dedicated check-in area for premium economy. Boarding is indeed chaotic, but you are allowed to board with Business Class passengers. In the chaos that's MEL, they actually announced that early boarding is allowed for Business, Sky Priority, and PE passengers. The one perk (albeit somewhat under-appreciated) when flying PE on the SYD SGN route is how quickly luggage comes out, often at the same time as Business Class passengers.
Thank you for the thorough and open review, Paul! As a Vietnamese student currently studying in Australia and regularly flying between the two countries, I was stunned after watching your video. Although I've never tried the airline's premium economy class on long-haul flights, the meal service provided for this ticket should have been more satisfactory. For instance, breakfast/lunch/dinner services on a Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh flight used to be served in ceramic plates/bowls rather than plastic ones. Wines were also served in glasses instead of paper cups. The meals were covered with either plastic wrap or aluminum foil (and yes, I'm talking about VNA's meal services for the Premium Economy class on this extremely busy domestic flight). The downgrade could be due to the effects of covid that led the airline to cut costs on these services. It's a pity to see how the flight crew handled the turbulence situation [and they forgot to add bread and butter to your second meal service, too?]. I can understand your disappointment with the IFE system. It has a limited selection of new movies. I flew between SGN and LHR back in 2019, and most of the movies on the system were either old or not that popular. I also don't understand why premium economy passengers don't have access to the priority lines and the lounge, as shown in your video. Vietnam Airlines should focus more on these details, besides the reasonable prices they charge, to attract even more customers to use the product. That way, we can compete with other airlines and improve satisfaction. I hope you had a great time in Vietnam! 😄
Very few airlines give Lounge access to Y+ passengers... The product shown looks pretty normal...although those meals were on the low end... As suggested, may be a COVID hangover...
Great video. I just flew to London and back PE with Vietnam Airlnes and thought it was really good. My only gripe was what felt like a vast difference in the amount of legroom in the 777 than the A350. Hopefully at some stage they will marry up the two products as the London leg in the 777 was so much roomier
Good to see the SkyTeam lounge at SYD has underwent some renovations. I flew with the airlines from MEL to SGN in economy in 2019, it was quite good. Menu was available back then, you could also order cocktails and instant noodles. I was lucky to be assigned to a seat at the row of the economy class cabin with better seat pitch for free.
I did VA Business Class SYD to FRA in 2019 for $4,000 which included a free hotel and city tour on the long layover in Hanoi. It was 1/3rd the price of QF. Service was spot on and the only complaint was the drab interior which looked a bit tired.
Great videoing and detailed commentary as usual Paul. It was good to have included the spooling up of the Trent engines on takeoff - the Airbus 350-900 - a great aircraft.
I think the livery looks great on either aircraft. Plus the ladies' flight attendant uniforms are especially colorful (jade/teal mix?) I think for the price difference I would definitely fly Vietnam airlines PE. For long haul flights this would meet all my expectations. The IFE, well I would just read a book and listen to music on my iPod. Thanks Paul.
Last month I had a flight with Vietnam Airlines from Ho Chi Minh to Tokyo. I was supposedly in economy class but I was actually sat in a premium economy seat on a 787. The meal was still economy but it was certainly a nice surprise to find my seat was a premium economy one, and I only payed economy price for it so no complaints, but I don't understand why that was classed as economy.
Fascinating!! As an American, especially one who was drafted into the army just as the war ended (thank God), we have complicated ideas about Vietnam. Your video was an extraordinary glimpse into a country that, for those of us in the States, might well have been on Mars.
Hey Paul ,premium economy on Vietnam Airlines would be my choice for just a little bit more money. When you landed at Saigon did you fly directly to Danang?
The A350 aircraft in your flight form Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City is the 9th A350 of VietNam AirLines have registration number VN-A894 was delivery to VietNam AirLines on November 5th 2017 I really happy because VietNam AirLines changed B787 to A350 for flight from Hanoi,Ho Chi Minh City to Sydney because A350 is my favorite aircraft in VNA fleet
The meals looked yummy! I realize the vid's a review on the airline, I sure would've loved to have seen the full take off at regular speed and landing :) Awesome video and tutorial! Thanks for sharing the experience. Seems like a decent plane and pretty good airline :)
I love Jurassic Park. It was great that Blue was reunited with her Baby. She came running when baby called. Ran off then came back to thank the man who trained her with a slight nod of thanks. As for Vietnam airlines. Well they look to have some strange goings on. Procedure wise.
Love the cloth seats over the pho leather on a longer flight. I think its something that needs to return to more airlines. Great review for an airline I want to try in the coming years.

I went to Hanoi via Hi Chi Minh in early October by business class. Pretty sure I caught CoVid on the flight too. The transfer from International to Domestic Terminals in HCM city to fly to Hanoi was not easy with no help offered from Vietnam Airways and conflicting information. The worst part of the trip was these transfers. There is no direct flight to Hanoi from Sydney. Caution: the Vietnamese need to save ‘face’ so you might be told that help will be available with the transfer or someone will meet you but alas, it might not happen. I would fly again because the airfares are cheaper with VA but the transfers spoiled the experience.
I just curious what airlines help you to transfer when you not asking for help. Domestic and international terminal is a 10 minutes bus🤷🏻♂️ i flight business by jal and ana. I even need to transfer between haneda and narita by train
I flew this same flight and had quite a different experience. Just thought I’d let you know before you fly them again. Just before immigration at Tan Son Nhat, there will be VNA staff standing with signs and repeatedly calling out those who are transferring domestically. There they give you a transfer sticker and information to collect your baggage and turn right to the Vietnam Airlines counter just after passing through customs. That is where you drop off your baggage and staff will take your luggage to the domestic terminal, and check it in for you onto Hanoi. All you have to do from there is a short 5 minute walk to the domestic terminal following the signs. You should already have your boarding pass for SGN-HAN and can use the priority security screening at the domestic terminal. Should you need more help, there are lots of VNA counters and desks available around the airport who are happy to assist.
Just back from Nam…yes the transfer from international to domestic HCMC is testing…they told me that they would take my luggage to domestic….but got lost in the process and after a lengthy stint at lost n found at Da Nang it arrived a day later.😮
Bald and Bankrupt ?.... LoL. Love his videos too ! Hi Paul... talking about security...the new security screen area for T 1 , T2, and T 3 at Tullamarine, there is no priority lane . There is a separate queue for those in wheelchairs, etc. But , as I use a walking stick , staff let me jump the extremely long queue (22 Dec), only to join the confusion as to which line to enter at the end. 🤣 I like the shade of blue on the planes livery, I think it stands out quite well. I am glad you did go into too much more detail about your "rumbling down below" when you visited the planes loo, either. Meal looked decent too.

In days gone by we used to always travel business using VA domestically. For not much you get the lounge and avoid all that unpleasantness of economy passengers and their cardboard boxes. When Jetstar did not fly to HCMC, we would wait for a good 'business' fare to Singapore and then fly VA business multi city. It was way cheaper than individual flights for some reason.
