North Alabama features an intense expression of Decoration Day observances in the late spring. This “cult of piety” involves the honoring of ancestors with church, family, and community reunions and results in a decorated cemetery and opportunities to share family stories and impressive displays of food. A well done (and most informative) commentary on an all too often much under appreciated tradition in the South. I have attended similar Decoration Day events at two cemeteries in Middle Tennessee. I was raised with this custom and it remains very important to me in reminding me of both my roots and my place in the world at large.
