    Another awesome review of your Subie Forrester . . . I really liked your approach of not taking a running start at the grassy hill. So, you genuinely tested the available Subie all-wheel drive modes - I'll need to watch the finer details a couple times to fully absorb the options I should select in my current model Outback. Keep the videos coming :-)

    I think i solved the problem.
    When you are on a steep hill try pressing the gas pedal firmly for 1 second and then add more throttle. What you are doing is giving a chance for the belt to grab and not slip. When you put the pedal to the metal in order to climb a hill the belt wants to slip. Thus causing the ECU to cut engine power to prevent belt slippage.
    So i think either get a slow rolling start or firmly press the pedal for a second to give the CVT a chance.
    Its kinda like a clutch system. You have to let go of the clutch but you dont do it instantly. You first reach the "biting point" and then let go completely.

    So I've been thinking about the issue with the CVT just bogging down.
    I think it may be counter intuitive but I might try LESS throttle. It's just a thought that someone suggested but the logic makes enough sense to experiment.
    All the times that I've bogged mine down and just had it 'stall' with no wheel spin is when I've had it floored.
    All the times that it's just climbed up like a little mountain goat are when I was between 25-75% throttle.
    Just a thought.
    Keep up the good work!

      What you say makes perfect sense if the CVT was programed to protect itself then less throttle would mean less chance of it going into a “stall mode”. I’ve owned 6 Subarus now and loved them all. My current car (2015 Outback 3.6r Limited) has the high-torque CVT. I haven’t gotten that to stall yet. Subaru is very good at making vehicles that do things that few other vehicles can do and they make them reliable as well. Part of making things reliable is to make sure they don’t destroy themselves. Honda is good at making automatic transmissions that eat themselves.

    I have a 2015 Outback 3.6r with the awesome 3.6 liter H-6 motor. Subaru put in a “high-torque” CVT in that which is great because it allows the car to tackle harder environments than the 4 cylinder models. I think what might help the 4 cyl Subarus would be if they just used the beefier CVT from the Forester XT and WRX in all of the non 6 cylinder models.

From what I've read at least that's a good first step if you dont want to limit wheel spin. I always leave VDC on for regular driving but not for getting out of my snow-filled driveway. I see from this video things are a bit more complicated that that.

  • @CouchYellowSquash

    A couple things that continue to baffle me...
    First being when people say they turn VDC off. That button is for traction control, you can't turn VDC off. What we've seen in other makes/models for years is that since VDC is still active TC can still be intrusive. Even in the off position, especially at slow speeds, and even on flat ground. In these situations the vehicle with open diffs actually starts to work against itself while it hunts for traction using the brakes.
    Second is anyone who continues to blame the CVT because this is not the fault of the transmission. I don't know where this got started but just like 'VDC off' someone somewhere said something and it just stuck because people didn't know any better.
    I've been taking my 15 Outback off road since shortly after I bought the car new. Understanding how the nannies work and how they can can limit you is key to getting around. I'll be very curious to see how X mode 2.0 will perform in these same situations.

    • @HighjakSecondary
      @HighjakSecondary  5 років тому +1

      VDC is not traction control... it is a combination of several systems that monitor wheel spin, throttle control, vehicle position and movement relative to the steer direction, etc. Yes, you CAN 'turn VDC off'. This doesn't disable all systems that encompass VDC, but it will disable or at least limit how much the ECU limits throttle input essentially permitting more wheel spin and RPM.
      The ECU is limiting throttle input to protect the CVT. Period.

    • @CouchYellowSquash
      @CouchYellowSquash 5 років тому

      It’s not simply the ECU HighjakSecondary, it’s still active traction control. The car will spin wheels all day long at higher than crawl speeds. From a stop or at low speeds, even on flat ground, it will remain active. We know this because if you pull the fuse for TC it will spin in your video conditions as well.

    See, this is something I have yet to see anyone test the new Subaru Ascent. I suspect because it is rated to tow 5k, and has significantly more power, that either the transmission is different, beefed up, or programmed differently. I have seen a video of the Ascent pulling a 4,500 lb boat up a 30 degree muddy boat ramp (was not paved) and it was putting the power down to keep it moving. I highly suspect due to Subaru having to beef up the CVT for the higher HP and tow capacity on the Ascent, it will in turn do better in this exact scenario. Now just need someone to test it.

      Seeing as how Subaru has built a “high-torque” CVT already and put it in the 6 cylinder Outback (2015 up), I’m going to guess that is what went into the Ascent. Given that the new 2.4 liter turbo 4 cylinder engine in the Ascent makes 265 horsepower and the 3.6 liter 6 cylinder makes 256 horsepower it would stand to reason they used the same transmission in both.

    This is why I got a '17 FXT instead of a 2019 Forester, I want the extra torque. 258 lb-ft in the XT, versus 176 lb-ft in the 2019, and 174 in your 2015, it just isn't enough in the NA models. I wish Subaru would do something about it, but unfortunately mass appeal will almost always beat enthusiast's needs

    • @HighjakSecondary
      @HighjakSecondary  5 років тому +2

      Torque has nothing to do with this test. The issue here is the ECU limiting the power sent to the wheels and there is no evidence to support the FXT functions any differently. The FXT however does have a "high torque CVT" in order to handle the higher hp/torque of the turbo CVT Forester and WRX, but again, there is no evidence right now that supports the idea that the ECU is functioning any different in a scenario such as this.

I have had similar episodes in the Crosstrek, but in the end I have been able to make it up my "problem" hills...To me it seems like on the Crosstrek anyway, that the wheels spin like crazy, but just don't grab...if we had a way to "lock" the real wheels together maybe it would work? cool Video brother.

    • @HighjakSecondary
      @HighjakSecondary  5 років тому +1

      Here I believe the problem lies solely with the CVT not being tough enough to handle this torque and Subaru playing it safe to protect the transmission. The 4EAT would spin all the way up to full throttle and max RPM on this hill. I don't believe it's related to the diffs at all. Granted, having lockers would help loss of traction, this wasn't even an issue with traction so much. It was an issue with the ECU not allowing enough power to get to the wheels to even spin them once on the side of the hill. I honestly question if the Subie could do this grade of a hill when all 4 wheels had traction. Wish I had a way to test that theory. Or potentially with X-Mode it's doing such a good job at recognizing the loss of traction that wheel spin is minimal to none thus the ECU isnt' allowing the needed torque on essentially 2ish wheels. I feel like the former is more true though.

    • @HighjakSecondary

      I'm not convinced the tire size is killing that much or any of the hill climbing ability here. Having seen these issue occur on a few other CVT Subies to include TFL's Outback which was completely stock all around, I don't think the tires have much to do with this one.

    I think that there is no such behavior if there is no slope...

    • @HighjakSecondary
      @HighjakSecondary  5 років тому +2

      I agree. The ECU must 'understand' how much torque is being requested by the driver based on throttle input and it's then allowing it or not based on some input factor/s it's receiving to protect the CVT. Disappointing. This was a tough hill and not doable for the older 2010 with 4EAT tranny either, but that model at least would continue to spin tires.. the ECU never cut power with VDC off. My hopes are that Subaru sees owners noting this as a complaint and they beef up the CVT to a point where it can handle more torque.

    There’s two ways to spin the tires. Do what Bruceyyy did and disconnect a certain fuse (I’ll link his video in a reply to this comment). The other way, is to have a FXT, put the transmission in sport #, and mash the gas pedal. I’m going to have to make a video about this.
    You asked for a more robust CVT and the V6 outbacks and the Forest XT’s have the HT-CVT or high torque CVT. I don’t think it would make a difference, as spinning wheels is pretty and all, but like Bruceyyy’s video explains... Subaru’s AWD system is smarter than us. Just give it more momentum or turn around 😃. Now let me find that link.

      HighjakSecondary yeah, I wouldn’t pull any fuses. Hats off to bruceyyy for taking one for the team. What’s the use of spinning tires if there’s isn’t much benefit.
      As far as the other method. I believe it’s only available if you have S# mode in the FXT. Engine will rev to redline, the CVT ratio is truly locked, and the wheels will spin. I’ll need to demonstrate this when I get the chance. Thanks for putting in the time to do all the tests. I think too much blame is being put on the CVT, when the blame might simply be on the VDC system. If you’re not going to make it, you’re not going to make it, and the VDC system just wants to let you know. Maybe they should have the car talk to us and say “fail! Send it harder! Use more momentum foo 🤣”.

      Makes me wish they put the HT CVT in all the Subies. Gotta be a cost thing. I still feel like Subaru is using the ECU to limit torque and protect the CVT, but maybe it's poorly programmed and the CVT can actually handle it. HI Highjack :) In the end you came up to the top because it took more run-up; in the first attempts you climbed too slowly ... the traction of the car doesn't hit anything, it would have happened with any 4x4.

    It's not CVT lack of ability to handle torque. It can handle enough torque to spin the tires. It doesn't take much. The computer shuts down when you have wheel spin but no forward motion. It limits you but it keeps you from digging in and getting stuck. Lots of off road and I've never been stuck. Sometimes can't make it but never stuck.

    • @HighjakSecondary
      @HighjakSecondary  5 років тому +1

      The computer doesn't shut down when there is wheel spin and no forward movement... if that were true these vehicles couldn't pass the two wheel diagonal roller and one wheel roller tests, but they do that just fine.

    • @moondoggie481
      @moondoggie481 5 років тому

      @@HighjakSecondaryThat's my point exactly! There is forward movement in the two wheel diagonal test since there is traction on two of the wheels. Computer senses this, brakes the spinning wheels and off you go.
      The two wheel diagonal test requires much much more torque than spinning the tires in dirt and the CVT handles that just fine. It's not the CVT torque limit. It's the computer shutting it down. If you had enough traction you would move - like you do in the two wheel diagonal test.
      If you put all four wheels on rollers the computer would shut it down and not spin the wheels even though zero torque is required.

    • @HighjakSecondary
      @HighjakSecondary  5 років тому +1

      @@moondoggie481 There is forward movement... but only after the ECU has had time to sort out WHY there is no forward movement initially thus braking the spinning wheels which then results in said forward movement. I'm calling bullshit.. if you put 4 wheels on rollers the ECU is not simply going to cut all throttle... it will continue to search for traction and spin wheels.

    The cvt will be subaru's downfall. Vehicles have gone away from utility and toward fuel economy and emissions. Awd or 4x4 in the majority of new vehicles Is just a gimmick that doesn't habe the balls to stand up against a true awd or 4x4 vehicle. This really sucks as I wheel alot, and there's no new sport utility vehicles I'd own because of this whole issue. It's so sad.

      Honestly, I've wished for more out of the CVT Subaru's as well, but in the end this is a tough obstacle to overcome for any vehicle without some momentum or lockers. If you really want to drive this terrain often I wouldn't let the CVT talk you out of it, but rather the ground clearance and lack of suspension articulation in these vehicles. I love Subaru, but they don't make any true off-road vehicles.
