There was a gold-bordered black velvet banner hanging on the wall behind our school band director which said: MUSIC IS A PICTURE PAINTED ON A BACKGROUND OF SILENCE This may well have been a permutation of the Debussy quote. For me, Monk punctuates things in an epic manner. Edit: Glad to hear you cite one of my favorite musicians by name. Les Izmoor.
Caballero me sorprende que hables en español aunque no me extraña. Gracias por responder no estoy en bogota y si mi pais da grandes musicos de jazz y hasta habia un festival. Gran canal.
Excellent as always Sir. Miles' playing on Kind Of Blue is a perfect example. In fact...his playing on just about anything from the mid 50's to the early 60's is perfect for that. His playing with his 1st great quintet with Coltrane comes to mind. Miles' solos from that time are perfect. They sound as if he worked them out in advance...although I'm sure he didn't.
Hi Richie, thanks for yet another great lesson. I grew up learning a lot of Carlos Santana and similar. I feel his melodies and solos are terrific for learning good phrasing. Do you agree? BTW love listening to your playing.
Thanks Homer...Interestingly enough, back in the early 70s I was in a small meditation group with Carlos in SF. He took me and a couple of other members to one of my first jazz concerts. He's really into jazz and got to hang out a lot with Miles so he picked up a lot of good phrasing concepts!
Thank you teacher.
Thankyou sir 🙏

Every guitar player out there should watch this video, some more than once...! Truth... 😎
This is a very important concept to keep in mind while soloing. It helps make phrases that give a sense to the playing. 👍
