I found a bunch of tins of 4th generation 1931 flakes and Peterson’s university flakes that are 5 year old tins I’ve been buying up they are very good the wife loves how the 1931 smells and I like how it taste so it works very well
@ yeah I was very happy I had never had the 1931 before so I just got the small tin to try but I’m gonna end up getting it all my wife when I light a bowl ask which 1 is that she said I’m gonna buy more of that
I'm technically American I suppose, but my whole family came to the US in 1897ish, from Ireland. It's been my wish since I was a child to go there and see my heritage. I envy you and I'm so glad you got the opportunity, it is absolutely stunning and gorgeous there. I don't know that I'd ever come back when I do go though lol. Thank you for sharing!
@@hobbitonpiper It's my #1 place I want to visit for sure! Thank you for all your content, I'm a very new(last 2 weeks) piper, trying to remove cigarettes from my life, I was smoking almost 2 packs a day. Your channel and a couple others such as muttnchop have been invaluable to get everything going. So far only issue I've had is losing the sensitivity of taste on my tongue, which from what I've seen from you guys comes with time, learning, and patience. Thank you so much for all your hard work, you are so laid back and soft-spoken and zen, it makes for a very relaxing evening to watch one of your videos and smoke with you!
What amazing Scenery to enjoy a Bowl or two. Ireland is one of my favorite places on The Planet although I must confess that most of my time has been spent In Northern Ireland as my late partner was s Belfast girl. Many thanks for that one, it just makes you want to relax, enjoy the surroundings with a nice mellow smoke.
I like how you say “University Flake” early into the video like a singer that announces his next track on stage. I love the work you put into your tobacco reviews and you take us on a trip.
Kevin, so great to to lite my pipe with you again. My Peterson Shannon is one of my favourite pipes, and filled with Peterson Sweet Kilarney was a real treat tonight. You know, my wife is from Northern Ireland, and we have been there many times to visit her family. In 1982 her Aunt took me to Dublin, and I purchased a full bent system p lip. We also got to visit the Guinness brewery that day. Thanks again, Al
Both the young and old love my pipe collection lined up in the cabinet young chaps are absolutely fascinated by these smoking devices and the 50 somthings as you say reminisce a by gone age along with my 300mm dobsonian telescope always seems to be good conversation starters. The added flavours on university flake to be honest have put me off trying it as tobacco is so obscenely expensive in the uk if I don't think I'll like it I won't try it. Your vids are truly therapeutic and I love pipeing with you, take care
Sean...the casing on this blend is subtle. It's not really an aromatic. I don't care for aros' either with 1 exception(Country Squires "Old Toby"). I understand price being a factor, but if you never try this one I think you will be missing out. Life's short :)
The great thing about the English language is you can really express yourself or how you feel, I have no shadow of a doubt that everyone really gets it when you say "Grape magic marker note".
Had over 2 weeks in Ireland recently, including Cliffs of Moher and spanning numerous counties, starting in Clare, day trip to Galway, Kerry, different places in Cork, through Tipperary, Limerick, etc. and I must say, it is definitely my favourite country out of pretty much anywhere I've been. The cleanliness, the scenery, the Murphys Irish Stout, the Guinness, the 'craic,' brilliant. Smoked my Peterson system pipe in the back garden of our second proper stay, at Gortdromakiery (near Killarney), right by Lough Guitane. Amazing.
@@hobbitonpiper We only went to Dublin briefly for the ferry trip over from Holyhead, Wales to Dublin on the way, then the ferry back from Dublin to Holyhead on the way back. The Peterson pipe I picked up at the markets at Kenmare, which is another place worth visiting in Ireland.
Hey Kevin, smoking some Nutty Irishmen in a 50/50 mix with Yorktown. I do enjoy University Flake and in fact place it in a niche different from but equal to Sunbear. So that should give you some indication how I feel about this blend. I have to say you looked right at home sitting and smoking there in Ireland. What a beautiful sight. I noticed the birds seem to have found you again. Que the happy music!
I really enjoy University Flake. I always want to say its kinda got a blackberry note to it. Anytime I smoke it it is just fabulous and thank you for the review. Your friend Tommy
My first wife used to buy me rectangular tins of Irish flake in the eighties, can't remember the brands, but what a delightful full flavor experience that was. Your Peterson pipe is Top Notch. I have tried Petersons Irish Flake in the red tin, packs quite a punch. Top of the morning to you Kevin !
I was currently smoking a Squadron Leader of SG watching your video ! 😅 Anyway, a friend of mine has fetched me a pipe tobacco of Vauen that I haven't tried yet : the Auenland Broken Flake of Vauen ! It's a virginia-burley blend with some kentucky and perique added, but no top flavoring. I'm looking forward to trying this one soon ! 😃
That looked like the second best place for a bowl! Of course the first being next to a fireplace on a cold day with a good beer. I bet some of people there thought you were a time traveler.
Thanks for the great video and amazing Irish scenery footage! Excellent pipe, and University Flake is a tasty, robust smoke. Happy smokes and God bless you and yours.
I got scared when I first popped the tin because that plum / prune topping was burying everything else, but oh man was it good. The dance between hay/earth and plum/ prune was such a pleasure. I kept getting a back-and-forth of the two. Yum!
Greetings from Nebraska. Just discovered your channel a few days ago, so I have been watching some back episodes. I have yet to try University Flake, but it's on my short list. I do love Ireland. I hope to go back one day. Thanks for the footage.
I don’t know if you have noticed this with Tobacco but as you said Burly when smoked fresh to some people can have a harshness to it when smoked fresh. But if you put that same tobacco in a jar and come back to it in a few years the harshness will subside and in some cases It will be eliminated all together. As far as smoking in public I have had a few people come up to me and compliment me and tell me similar stories of their father or grandfather used to smoke a pipe and how much they enjoyed the smell of pipe tobacco and wished more would smoke it again. .
@@hobbitonpiper oh I know, I used to have some 10 year old Frankenstein I kept in a large mason jar. I actually forgot about it and broke it out and smoked some and it was amazing. Smooth as silk and all the burly that was in the mix developed a beautiful chocolate smell and taste 🥰 I should have kept a iron grip on that blend but I was overly generous and gave away over half to people I didn’t know smoked pipe tobacco. Everyone enjoyed it and remarked how smooth and delicious it was. I only wish I remembered what the heck I put into it 🤣😝
Good evening Kevin, sitting here on the back porch with a bowl of G&H Ennerdale. Choose my Scotte bent pear wood for the experience. Unlike any aromatic🤔I've ever had. Choose your Irish video to share it with, so to speak. Hope you're doing well, Al
Because of your recommendation, I bought 12 tins of C&D’s Sunbear Tupelo Honey. I’m smoking it right now and it is absolutely lovely. Thank you so much for your recommendation.
Nice vid! You caught some great weather. Our family was there 4 years ago and walked to the very end of the cliffs and the old tower at the end of the peninsula.
Thank you for your review. I’ve been to Ireland, and I have the privilege of University Flake being my favourite blend for years before going across the pond. I’ll never forget smoking this at Temple Bar, Killarney and the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. Thanks for the fantastic review. Love the shots of the Cliffs of Moher :)
Brother, your review truly made my day. You captured the magic of this blend like no one ever could. This blend is very close to my heart, and I sincerely thank you for your review :) Sending you and your family all the best from Ottawa, Ontario :)
Thank you for your lovely videos! They're comforting and deeply informative. It's like you're my smoking buddy, despite the distance. Could you please review War Horse Green? It's one of my favorites and I'm curious what memories and stories you might share with that one.
I have plenty of it on hand now so it’s unlikely I’ll get any for 2023. See my Community tab though, I just linked to a video of me smoking Rustica with my initial thoughts :)
Wonderful video, Hobbiton! Reminds me to upload my Skellig Michael short. Alas, they no longer sold Peterson tobacco when I visited Ireland in June. Not in Limerick or at the Peterson shop in Dublin where I bought my lovely green spigot.
Wonderful video. I have not tried that tobacco yet. I have found that I enjoy every one of Petersons tinned tobacco’s. I also enjoyed hearing the wren in the background. I had to stop the video to see if it was actually out here with me. I’m listening to the humming birds chirping along with the summer Tanager‘s. I am relaxing out on my deck that is practically out in the middle of the woods. I do find your videos extremely relaxing and enjoyable, as well as educational. God bless you my friend John.
I absolutely loved the Ireland footage you shared. Thank you! To be honest, I haven't had a tin of University Flake since long before it left Ireland for Denmark. I remember it being an interesting combination of VA and burley, but for some reason it never hit home for me. It's not that I didn't enjoy it, it's that it wasn't especially memorable to my palate. You have sparked a desire for me to revisit it. Speaking of Peterson of Ireland time, one blend of theirs I really like that many others find unremarkable is Peterson's Irish Oak (now labeled Irish Cask from the Scandinavian group). About 15 years ago I purchased six of then 8-year-old tins, of which I have about 2 tins-worth left in a mason jar in my cellar. I'm unsure why that particular blend hits my palate nicely, where for others it doesn't. It's a definitive case of individual tastes vary.
Yes, everyone’s favorites are going to differ, for many different reasons. Each person has to find what they personally connect with. That’s part of the fun and enjoyment of the journey :)
I have some University Flake and it’s superb. A bit of a hit on the N supply, but pace yourself friends. This tobacco is subtle, dare I say tantalizing.
Just got a tin of 80’s ? Production Peterson. First ever pipe smoke, had to re hydrate it so some success some failure but overall very happy and as a beginner I really enjoyed this video
I bought a couple of tins of this today from my only local tobacconist that’s starting to wind down as they are selling up and retiring and I say local it’s an hour and a half round trip but it’s nice to see these little shops still on the go and it was all they had in tins apart from loose which they have always charged way over the top for £10 over anywhere else but their tins are reasonable so I tend to do most of my orders online but like to do my bit for these little shops. Anyhow I’d never tried the university flake and on the way home I called in at a lovely little place on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors with views to die for, let the dogs out for a run and sat on this rock with my travel mug and loaded up my pipe and thoroughly enjoyed it and it seemed to last forever and what better day and place with two black Labradors sat on either side of me just sat listening to nature and the call of the red grouse giving an occasional cackle looking over where I live out towards the North Sea. I could have sat there for hours as all sorts of thoughts and memories go through your mind thinking what may have been. And as for the university flake, well I’ll definitely be buying it again as it was a nice change, University Flake the memory maker!
Most burley’s I dont like much depending on the blend. This one I really like a lot though. Reminds me a lot of cascadia trailhead which is by far one of my favorite vir/bur blends. If you haven’t tried it I highly recommend it. Every time I smoke trailhead it’s a perfect smoke session.
Great video as always, University Flake is definitely in my top 5. I have never tried it aged.... I have put a tin in a jar with the intention of saving it, but never made it past a few weeks, its just too good 😊 Do you know of anywhere that sells cellared tobacco at reasonable prices? So far what I have seen online the prices are ridiculously high. Like aged Cuban Cigars 😱
Hey its me again, sorry for taking up so much space, just tried the English blend. While it does taste lovely its gota nice nutyness from the burley and a dark leathery smokeyness from the latakia that hits the pallete in a different (but not unpleasent way) to the virginia. It is a little bit intemse on the nicotine and i must admit to feeling a tad sick with it.
Great story and positive energy. When I was a kid I had a Scream Halloween mask and it had a very distinct smell. Sweet plastic is all that comes to mind. I recently tried Captain Black original and it smells exactly like it. I don't necessarily think that it smells good. It's not bad but not appetizing either. Needless to say when I tried the tobacco it was one of the best tasting tobaccos I've ever smoked, with one of the best room notes I've ever smelled. Tried Prince Albert about 10 years ago and it tasted like pure cigarette.
I agree...this blend is between medium and dark and morphs as you smoke it. The plum/berry casing is subtle enough to keep this out of the aromatic category, but noticeable enough to really compliment the taste. It's not a burley, but it's not a Virginia either...I hesitate to say it's something in between because that ain't right either :) Whatever it is, it's excellent and I always have a jar in my cabinet. This blend turns to concrete in the bowl if not prepped and packed well, and can benefit from a little dry time depending on your pipe, weather etc. It's worth getting right so mess around with it. Highly recommended...a most excellent smoke. Side note: I have an old el-cheapo $12 no name pearwood sitter that I love so much it would be in my pocket if there ever was a "pipe armageddon" :) Thanks for the vid.
I have 2 Tins on the way now- Never tried it before but I love burley blends. My relaxation moments are outside on my porch, I smoke my tobacco pipe (usually my Roma churchwarden or my Dr.Grabow bent) and a glass bowl of marijuana. Sip both n listen to the birds.
Confirmed. Dark, sweet, that fruit topping is very elusive but I catch a hint here and there- if I didn’t know it was there, I’d never noticed it. It blends so well with the Virginia and burley. Thanks for the scenic views and the videos.
My mind is in the gutter, couldn't help but giggle a little bit when you called it "rubbing one out". I'm not very much of tobacco person myself, even tho i do love smoking some other well known plants :3. My brother loves cigars but i'm pretty meh about them. I am really looking forward into trying out pipe smoking tho! been watching a few videos from your channel and it seems like the pipe community is very kind. the vibes of slowing down and taking your time with the hobby is something i usually enjoy. i'm sure you've probably already made a video on best starter blends so i might watch that soon.
Iv'e moved over to using lighters as the matches just are not suitable for smoking outside, id end up using a whole box of the things on one smoke because they're constantly going out. Tried some of that virginia flake, must say it is ratger lovely (if a little hard to light) but once you get it going its quiet pleasent. Ageing it for a few months has helped to roll off a little bit of that harshnes. When first lighting the pipe it's got a very definate tea taste and there isn't much of any seperation with how it smells in the tin and how it tastes. Was trying to put my finger on what it reminds me of and i think of lipton peach ice tea if you know it, very much reminds me of that. Theres a toasty flavour to the background like that of toast thats only lightely done to golden (how i prefer it) but this is only in the backround most of the taste is tea. Aroumd half way in the tea starts to subside being replaced with a much fruitier taste which ratger reminds one of going out and picking berries in the summer. Tne toastienes takes on a darker quality. It gets more earthy further down the bowl. Didnt detect any high hay flavours in the blend. All in all a very easy and enjoyable smoke with good develpment thru the bowl.
@@hobbitonpiper there is only one problem with the particular pipe i used which is it has a weird stop start draw to it, well initialy. You sip on it and it kinda takes a second for it to draw, this goes away after the first puff.
I could smell this baccy forever man haha 😄 ✌️ I have some from back in 2017-18 still that has some age on it. So about 7 years on it? Haven't smoked it for a while. Man wish I could have joined you. I've always wanted to go to Ireland or New Zealand 😊
@hobbitonpiper same brother. My Flakes of Peterson University are almost jet black now cuz of aging in my pipe cabinet haha. I bet the red wine would be excellent with that baccy. Has a red wineishness to it anyways with the vinegar type smell to its casing. Playing some BOTW while watching your video. Makes me think of your video of Ireland haha
@hobbitonpiper have you ever had the aromatic blend called Da Vinci In Fumo è Verità? It's a golden Virginia and black Cavendish blend that is cased with red Chianti wine from the Colli Senesi region. I got it from Boswells a while back. My Pop liked it when he had it. I guess it's made in Germany by Dan Tobacco. Little 50g tin. Just made me think of tobaccos good with red wine haha. I assume this type of wine is sweet since the blend is sweet?
Being new to pipes, I've gotten my collection of tobacco in their tins. But I've been seeing Mason jars with the lids from the tins on them. Is that correct? Do those lids fit those jars?
Kudos! It is indeed beautiful here, however, as pipe smoking goes, the government does indeed try to make riddance of us for good! Even Peterson's own Boutique shop in Dublin no longer offers to buy their tobacco, nor is there anywhere else in Ireland possible to source good pipe "powder" apart of James Fox, that still had until lately some quality blends, however even they are out of stock and due to government policies the prices are outrageous! The only options for us Irelanders is to travel to continental Europe and to bring back our favorable blends either from Holland or Germany for instance and based on allowance it is 1 kg per person travelling...
Hi Kevin, you said it the topping doesn’t taste artificial. I have tried Wallace flake and it tastes like artificially flavored fruit candy. Have you tried both?
My friend wanted to buy Peterson University Flake at the Peterson store in Dublin, but they couldnt sell it! But they had a match by C&D. Any idea why they cant sell a tobacco made in Denmark but one made in the US? Very strange to not be able to buy Petersons in a Peterson store :S
Tobacco laws are ridiculous there…graphic picture warnings are required on all tobacco packages. I’m not sure about all the rules there concerning what they can and cannot sell
@@nathenwallis5664 correction Nathan, the one in this video is a “Z-Plus Pipe Flame Insert for Flip Top Lighters”. I do also own an official Zippo Butane insert but it’s a double torch for cigars :)
@hobbitonpiper oh, okay. I was wondering if I got a knock off there for a minute, because my butane insert still uses a flint wheel, haha. How do you like this one?
Are you saying you want something that generates a lot of smoke in the sky? That’s not really the goal of pipe smoking as this is almost always an indicator that you are smoking the bowl too fast and too hot
Great video! So I have a question: Are you only going to smoke Virginias in that Peterson pipe or will you also smoke English blends in it too? I ask because I just purchased my dream pipe (the Savinelli Bing's Favorite) and thought I would dedicate it to English blends but now I am loving the pipe so much that I also want to smoke some of my Virginia blends in it. Should i not use the same pipe for both blends?
@@hobbitonpiper thanks! Is my new pipe permanently a pipe for English blends since I have smoked an English in it 3 times or am I still able to try a Virginia blend in it and see if I want to dedicate it to Virginia blends?
Eating a full meal beforehand and stopping before the final 3rd of the bowl works every time for me if I’m concerned about potential nicotine sickness. Better to prevent it all together
Quite enjoing the pipe sesm to have gotten the hang of things, im still having trouble with the virginia i cant kedp it lit, doesnt matter which pipe i use doesnt want to stay lit at all. I wrote a shlrt peics of writting which may or may not be called a poem about the hobby (bear in mind this is an early draft) Im lighting the match that carries the day, drawing it upon the bowl the embers that shine red in the moonlight emerge from leaves long cured. The flavour slowly comes into focus and grows in plumes of smoke. I sip in all worries all anguish from the day, it drives out off my mouth it witheres and fades, the smoke like ten thousend exotic dancers comes tumbling out of my bowl, as i sit and ponder the day long gone, i sit and ponder the flavours blended for me, the sweet virginia, the smokey latakia, the peppery parique, each sip pulling out the intrcuit dance of flavour. So let my evening prayer rise up before you like smoke from my pipe, and let us lie ourselves to bed for the day is just ahead. The line So let my evening prayer rise up before you like smoke from my pipe, is an almost direct quotation from the psalm that goes let my prayer rise up to you like sweet incense, pipe smoking always reminds me of that.
No cats to my knowledge. Not sure which part of the video you’re referring to but there were definitely some neighborhood kids playing in the background :)
How do people do it? I started pipe smoking just about a week ago, and I have tried 4 different tobacco so far.....2 blends that are not aromatic and 2 that are, and I don’t get any taste from any of them.....they are all the same. Maybe a tiny bit of tobacco taste, some ash and a whole lot of tongue bite. No sweetness , no nothing!
Experience. The first year can be difficult. Technique and cadence are key, and it will come with time. I suggest you start by finding a blend that does not give you tongue bite. Slow down and sip the pipe, relight as necessary. Flavors will come to you over time. People who taste coffee for the first time often taste nothing but bitterness. With wine sometimes it’s nothing but alcohol for a while. Give it time :)
Give it a month or two of periodic smoking to let your mouth and taste buds adjust. Dry your tobacco more. I smoke my tobacco bone dry. I dry it out on a napkin just before it's so dry it crumbles to dust. I then pack my pipe and let it dry all the way until the next day in the pipe. Then I smoke it. Practice packing the bowl. I sprinkle the tobacco in while tapping on the side to lightly and evenly fill it all the way to the top. Then I take a pinch that's bigger that the diameter of the bowl and pack it firmly on top pushing it down until it lines up slightly under the rim. The tobacco that spills just goes back in the jar. Last but not least patience. It will start tasting better I promise you.

Yes, it was very nice!! Memories to last a lifetime
I like how you say “University Flake” early into the video like a singer that announces his next track on stage. I love the work you put into your tobacco reviews and you take us on a trip.
Thank you so much for this feedback, it means a lot! :)
Great video as always and your videos are certainly nice and relaxing.
Good deal, that’s what I’m hoping for! :)
Those are great memories!! I’m glad you got to experience that :)
I hear you, there are many toppings that seem to be overdone and ruin the natural tobacco experience on blends
Sean...the casing on this blend is subtle. It's not really an aromatic. I don't care for aros' either with 1 exception(Country Squires "Old Toby"). I understand price being a factor, but if you never try this one I think you will be missing out. Life's short :)
Great review and great story. I just went and bought a tin. Beautiful footage
Cool, let me know what you think of it! :)
The great thing about the English language is you can really express yourself or how you feel, I have no shadow of a doubt that everyone really gets it when you say "Grape magic marker note".
Haha yes! :)
Amazing.
What an amazing trip!! Did you happen to stop by here?:

I got scared when I first popped the tin because that plum / prune topping was burying everything else, but oh man was it good. The dance between hay/earth and plum/ prune was such a pleasure. I kept getting a back-and-forth of the two. Yum!

I don’t know if you have noticed this with Tobacco but as you said Burly when smoked fresh to some people can have a harshness to it when smoked fresh. But if you put that same tobacco in a jar and come back to it in a few years the harshness will subside and in some cases It will be eliminated all together.
As far as smoking in public I have had a few people come up to me and compliment me and tell me similar stories of their father or grandfather used to smoke a pipe and how much they enjoyed the smell of pipe tobacco and wished more would smoke it again. .
Aging tobacco leaf can have dramatic effects!
@@hobbitonpiper oh I know, I used to have some 10 year old Frankenstein I kept in a large mason jar. I actually forgot about it and broke it out and smoked some and it was amazing. Everyone enjoyed it and remarked how smooth and delicious it was.
I only wish I remembered what the heck I put into it 🤣😝

You're absolutely right about flakes and similar formats. Experimenting is half the fun!

Great description, I could certainly picture this scene! Yes, it does tend to burn slowly doesn’t it! So nice :)

Great video as always, University Flake is definitely in my top 5. I have never tried it aged.... I have put a tin in a jar with the intention of saving it, but never made it past a few weeks, its just too good 😊
Do you know of anywhere that sells cellared tobacco at reasonable prices? So far what I have seen online the prices are ridiculously high. Like aged Cuban Cigars 😱
There are some consignment options, but I find for me it’s more affordable and fun to age them myself, or trade with others
Which English blend are you referring to again?
Its a house blend from segar and snuff in covent garden, not entirely sure what is could be likened to
Its a burley latakia virginia if that helps.
You should revisit Prince Albert! :) See my thoughts below:

@@hobbitonpiper Someday.
I enjoyed reading this comment! Yes, everyone should have a pipe in mind to grab in that situation! :)

Never tried it before but I love burley blends.
My relaxation moments are outside on my porch, I smoke my tobacco pipe (usually my Roma churchwarden or my Dr.Grabow bent) and a glass bowl of marijuana.
Sip both n listen to the birds.
I think you’ll enjoy exploring this blend!
Confirmed.
Dark, sweet, that fruit topping is very elusive but I catch a hint here and there- if I didn’t know it was there, I’d never noticed it. It blends so well with the Virginia and burley.

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Yes, I love using matches but it’s very difficult to manage them consistently outside
@@hobbitonpiper there is only one problem with the particular pipe i used which is it has a weird stop start draw to it, well initialy. You sip on it and it kinda takes a second for it to draw, this goes away after the first puff.

Yes, that is so unfortunate. It’s sad when pipe smokers are grouped in with those that inhale smoke.

Hey, im looking for a tobacco with a huge sky/smoke. Witch ones would you recommend? (For pipe)
Quite enjoing the pipe sesm to have gotten the hang of things, im still having trouble with the virginia i cant kedp it lit, doesnt matter which pipe i use doesnt want to stay lit at all.
I wrote a shlrt peics of writting which may or may not be called a poem about the hobby (bear in mind this is an early draft)
Im lighting the match that carries the day,
drawing it upon the bowl the embers that shine red in the moonlight emerge from leaves long cured.
Dont know if its fully original, may have subconciusly borrowed from places
Beautiful poem!! Remember, it’s ok to relight, as often as you need to :) Keep experimenting, you’ll get it
Aromatic
You enjoy the topping on this one?
Sounds like cats are in heat in the background 😂
