Thanks for taking care of her Shawn. Those are the Wunderlich foot peg covers. I didn’t want the off road pegs to tear up the soles of my riding boots.
Dang it, I was going to subtitle the video with that information after speaking with you and missed doing so... You are very welcome, it was my pleasure Levigato!!
It took me 18 years to find a deal I was willing to buy. Got the R1250GSA Triple Black today. For 3K less than the one I was looking at in 2020!! It doesn’t have adaptive headlights nor the heated seats. I’ve been riding since 1971. Never had those things before…I can live with that. Love it!
Im curious about the comment on the charging. I used to use the Optimate 4 plugged into my 1250GS accessory port(gem) next to the dash. But then I bought the BMW kit to replace that accessory port with a BMW USB port. I used a Touratech relocation kit to put that oem Accessory port in that back. It wires directly to the battery and I use that for my Optimate 4. Why is it so important to use a Canbus port to charge or maintain the battery rather than use a port/plug wired to the battery? Every bike for decades, as well as cars, use plugs wired to the battery to charge and maintain the battery. Including BMW's and other exotic high end vehicles.
BMW wants an approved CANbus charger connected to the accessory port so that the charge goes through the Ground Control Module. The ground module controls the fuses and can isolate major control modules from harm should a voltage spike or any other electrical fault occur during charging. The Ground Module will even check the charger attached before allowing the charging to start, if it doesn't like what it sees, it will reject the charger and isolate. We've had two smoked ECU's caused by folks charging through a tender lead connected directly to the battery, and they're shockingly expensive..! BMW can tell what happened through diagnostics and will reject any attempt to warranty an ECU damaged in this way. BMW motorcycles are the only vehicles I know of that requires this. Thanks Michael!!
No one better than you Shawn knows that any day on two wheels is a great day. Whether that bike be smooth and quiet or rumbly and loud. Manual or DCT. No caged vehicle compares to the experiences of a motorcycle. Ride safe and often.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2019 1250GS but looking to buy a 2024 GSA Low Suspension. Would you say the GSA Low Suspension doesn't handle as well? How different is it from the standard GS?
Shawn: You were very adamant about the correct way to charge the bike with the battery connected. I have the 2020 1250 GSA, and I went through the manual as carefully as I can, but the BMW Ops manual is somewhat hard to follow. But I gather that, in the end, if you want to charge the battery when the battery is connected to the bike, that BMW states to go through the socket (in my case on the dash) with a BMW or BMW capable charger. Is that correct? You might consider a short video explaining that and clarifying that if true, as any number of the current popular web sites will have plenty of 'experts' stating one can charge their modern BMW's with CANBUS with a pig tail. There seems to be a lot of confusion on the topic. Also, what problem(s) specifically can occur to the onboard electronics if charging is done by connecting through a direct connect pigtail? Thanks for all you do! Best wishes to you and Mrs. Smoak, John
I used the Battery Tender Junior on my old bikes but bought the Optimate 4 with CanBus for this GS. I have read that paragraph in the owners manual also.
I dont understand this either. Nearly every vehicle, car or bike, uses a lead direct to the battery for chargers. Is this the only vehicle in the world that can't do that? I used to plug my Optimate 4 into that oem Canbus socket in front. But I replaced that socket with a BMW USB socket that is made for that. So the oem socket now is in the back wired directly to the battery, and the Optimate plugs in there. Not sure how all of a sudden having a charger direct to the battery is forbidden. Never heard that from any other bike or car manufacturer.
Unless something has changed for 2023, the Ground Module will reject a non-CANbus charger after approximately 40 seconds. The DIN is a power outlet that converts into a power inlet with the correct charger connected... Thanks Kirk!!
So Shawn I have a 22 GSA with the battery pigtail and was told was for a battery tender. Have been using with no issues but noted you said not to use! Why. TIA
89 Suzuki Intruder. Air check everyday for 4 yrs, 100,000 miles. My oil might would be a tad low but air pressure would be perfect. Two wheels minus one equals something I DON’T want to even dream about. Lol!! Stay safe and survive ONE MORE DAY👍🏽😎
One of these days I'm gonna go to a BMW dealer and test ride one of those things. They sure look like a fun bike. And I like that blue as well. Happy Fri-Yay! Peace and love.
Question. I know the 1250s are smoother. But how are they in maintenance? Is it harder to maintain then the 1200s? And do they have more or less engine problems than the 1200s. Also when the shift cam solenoids go bad how does that effect the engine?
Sweet GSA, still my dream bike, even with 3 wheel only endorsement and short, short, 25-inch inseam. I'll just stick to an F-3S or F-3 LTD. Shawn, you and momma have a nice Fri-yay evening and pet the puppers for me. God bless, Rob
I like the color, but still partial to my triple black GSA. I'm bringing my 2022 K1600B GA in to you soon for its 600 mile service. Did you find a solution to the knocking noise? I unfortunately have it on this bike :(
That's a beautiful bike. Thinking of getting one myself. I've been trickle charging my R1200GS water cooled bike for years with a battery pigtail and no issues. Can this create issues? Is it just the newer 1250s that require a canbus charger?
Great video, this bike definitely gorgeous. would you say GS is better at off-roading vs GSA? I’m planning to get one, however I’m struggling to decide between Honda Africa Twin Adventure sports vs R 1250 GS. Any insight ?
I only have a 29" inseam and I have zero issues with the tall standard chassis GSA's. This is a Low Chassis version that anyone can ride... Be careful, if you test ride one, you won't sleep until one is in you possession..! Lol Thanks Mark!!
While I don’t own a GSA, that is one good looking bike👌 You mention a optimate with can bus option… would that be a better choice for a Spyder too? Have a great one👍
Are you advising not to use a pigtail from the battery directly to an Optima charger and use only the can-bus for chargine? By the way, I like your new car more than this GSA - 😉

Picking up this same bike Monday. Any recommendations, advice, regrets? I'm stoked.

@@TheSmoaksVlogs thanks. Since I renovated the original BMW port to the back I suppose I can get the canbus harness for it back there
Great video. When I put oil in a GS should I leave the oil filter off to stop airlocks or put the oil filter on first
Did this one have the LED headlight? Have you heard anything from BMW about the LED headlight retrofit for halogen headlights?
Great video! That GSA is stunning!
No one better than you Shawn knows that any day on two wheels is a great day. Whether that bike be smooth and quiet or rumbly and loud. Manual or DCT. No caged vehicle compares to the experiences of a motorcycle. Ride safe and often.
Shawn is that a holder for an iPhone and not the Garmin Nav 6 ? I have a Nav 6 on my RT ? I always thought in the GSA it had a holder for the Nav 6
Thanks for the video. I have a 2019 1250GS but looking to buy a 2024 GSA Low Suspension. Would you say the GSA Low Suspension doesn't handle as well? How different is it from the standard GS?
Shaun you replaced the drive shaft oil at first service?
Yes, and every 6,200 miles thereafter...
Thanks!!
On some new bmw's you cant get a service manual(R18). Is that the same for this? Are owners forced to go to dealer for service?
Haven't seen or heard any mention of your demos since COVID. Did they end you having a demo or two?
A GSA will get you there. Good stuff Smoak’s!
Great videos as Allways, I'm thinking between the GSA and Triumph 1200 tiger rally Explorer, Have you tried the triumph 1200 rally Explorer?

Hello there, can i use a standard battery tender with the motorcycle DIN male plug, into the socket to the side of the seat?

is that plug standard on GSA?

I test rode the exact same type GSA at this dealer’s BMW demo event last summer and fell in love with it, 6 months later I bought one.
You really should do so..! As BMW says, "A GS will change your life!" Very true statement..!
Thanks TJ!!
bikes, guns and r/c.... we need to hang out 😆
Hi mr smoak can you tell me why i shouldnt have a optimate connected to my batter instead of the din lead my optimate is for can bus

Earplugs.
Can anyone tell me the width of the engine ( not with the crash bars) ?

beautiful bike and great colur. Not for me though what with my shorty legs, Thanks guys
I’m 5’7 with a 28 inseam and I can pretty much flat foot it.
I only have a 29" inseam and I have zero issues with the tall standard chassis GSA's. This is a Low Chassis version that anyone can ride... Be careful, if you test ride one, you won't sleep until one is in you possession..! Lol

Miss watching your videos
That's my dream bike. Probably a year out till I get it, currently learning to ride on G310GS
