I've been mixing the two modules and I can attest that it is challenging. I would say to anyone thinking about it that you cherry pick what you like from each. Or do what I did, if you end with a TPK in one start the other, and if the party was attached to their previous characters, write in a resurrection side story using some of the side quests as the debt that one of the factions might impose for that service.
You can also get storm lords wrath, sleeping dragons wake, divine contention all are around phandaline and continue the essentials kit story past level 6 though they move the players to leonin a port town about 15 miles from phandaline to help build it from the ground up so the players have a more of a connection but has where phandaline gives players gifts for defeating the dragon when they visit. If you run lost mines make sure to run it before icepire as the story is 2 years prior chronologically.
