Food Waste and SDGs simply explained
This short video features Lily and Ben a lively pair of siblings dedicated to making their community more sustainable. Lily, always armed with interesting facts, kicks things off by introducing the Foodwise Families project, which teaches families how to cook without wasting food. Ben enthusiastically adds that the project isn’t just about cooking-it’s about saving money, helping the planet, and making sure everyone has enough to eat.
This Foodwise Families Zero Waste Initiative came forth due to some eye-opening statistics about food waste in Malta. More than half of the waste, namely 52.1%-is made up of food waste. This means that each person wastes an average of 135 kilograms of food every year, nearly double the world average of 74 kilograms per person.
Adding to this, 45% of fruits and vegetables in Malta are wasted each year, often is never even making it to the table.
Determined to make a change, the Foodwise Families initiative offers practical ways to reduce food waste, like buying only what’s needed, eating leftovers, and using up fruits and vegetables before they spoil.
The video shows how Ben connects their efforts to a bigger global mission: the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, which aim to ensure everyone has enough food, clean water, good health, and a healthy planet by the year 2030. Together, Lily and Ben demonstrate that small changes at home can have a big impact on the world.
