Reading the water and anticipating changes in the wind is crucial to successful racing campaigns. Just as crucial, is your reaction to these shifts. Review the five gears of sailing, each designed for a different set of conditions or goals. Remember, just sitting in the groove doesn't win races. Experienced racers constantly change gears and make adjustments to get most out of every puff, lull, and shift.

Hey, I used to always hunt for nice flying telltales in the front sail both sides of it. But always noticed my windward pointing was so bad compared to others. Now maybe it's time to shift gear.
