    Thank you for this video! It came just at the right time! As a newerish gardener, I noticed some spots but didn’t think much about it considering we have had so much hot weather. Now that I know this I’m going out today and getting on it! So much to learn when it comes to homesteading. Super overwhelming at times, especially with young kids, but I love the challenge and the learning.

    This has been a bad year for blight most places. I made a mistake with my tomato seedlings while they were still indoors (left for vacation and forgot to turn the grow light timer on). I ended up replacing with seedlings bought from a couple reputable greenhouses. I'll never do that again. I was able to save my healthy homegrown seedlings, but the bought ones all developed early blight (crammed into flats + overhead watering = impossible to avoid blight). I tried everything, but that blight spread to my own seedlings and my potatoes. I was so upset. We still got a good crop of new potatoes, but now I'm going to have to avoid that whole area next year.

    Like other comments, I thought my plants were stressed due to odd weather. We’ve had cold, lots of rain, and also heat in triple digits. I’ve tried potatoes several times but haven’t gotten the knack of it yet.

    I had blight on my tomatoes that were in containers so I was lucky but I have been spraying copper all over my garden . The down side is this year July was really rainy in VT and I would spray the copper and the next day it would be rinsed off. I have only lost two plants but hopefully it will be better next yesr.

    I know from having a moldy house then a mold sickness in myself caught from the mold in the house that mold spores are something you don’t play around with. Very bad news.

    I think I misconstrued the idea that your potatoes are ready to harvest when your leaves, the greenery, start to die back, so I think I have the same problem - blight in my potatoes. Unfortunately, they're the fingerling and the red but I hope I didn't lose all of them just because I didn't know the difference. Thanks for showing this gardening event, Melissa becuz this is my first time growing potatoes (Michigan).

    • @zaria5785
      @zaria5785 3 роки тому +4

      Oh good question.
      I’m guessing if the plant is just dying back naturally you’d see some yellowing of the leaves from the base of the plant rather than random brown spots on the leaves. I guess this is why getting out into the garden daily is important so you don’t miss those transitions when plants are deprived of nutrients or water vs. disease vs. naturally dying back.

Trust me, I’ve had my fair share of mishaps and oversights and silly things like over watering or under watering plants and killing them right at harvest time or peak bloom time. It happens to the best of us and all we can do is see it as a learning opportunity .

    So Melissa, what would you plant in that area where the potatoes were pulled? Do you leave it fallow, or can there be some amending? I have possible early blight, in my garden of 10X10 and I like you am hitting it head on as it comes. My property is less than 3,000 sq ft total, so I don't have many choices of moving crops. Is there plants I can rotate?

    • @debbiehenri345
      @debbiehenri345 2 роки тому +1

      Don't know if this is any use to you, but as I live in Scotland blight is really very common in potatoes here. So I decided to grow my potatoes in large pots. That way, I'm in charge of drainage, soil composition, and can take care to mulch to stop 'splashing' of spores that might exist on soil surface.
      Stand pots of potatoes among other plants, so they are separated from each other by broad beans, peas, generally things that climb up above the potatoes and get the sun on their leaves okay.
      If, by some misfortune, blight 'does' appear in one of the pots, the plant can be hoicked out, the soil can be dumped off in another part of the garden where it won't be a threat, and the pot thoroughly cleaned before it's planted up with more potatoes.
      There is an expert pot-culture potato grower on UA-cam, his channel called 'Simply gardening.' He will give you an idea on what sort of soil you should be putting in a pot for optimum potato plant growth (as it differs from planting in open ground).
      I have been growing potatoes in pots for about 3 years now, and much more successfully than I ever did in the ground. In fact, the yield can be so high, the potatoes can split the pots, so it's a good idea to dig down and remove a few potatoes if you see the pots get misshapen.

      Blight does not reside in the soil so the area can be safely replanted year after year. Blight is an airborne disease and it only thrives on living tissue.

    Huw Richards says to cut down the affected plants to the ground (cut off stem
    And leaves) but to leave the potatoes in the ground for two weeks. What are your thoughts on this instead of pulling them up right away?

    • @MelissaKNorris
      @MelissaKNorris 3 роки тому

      Once the leaves are all gone the potato won't grow any bigger so I don't see any point in waiting. In the fall with healthy crops I'll leave them in ground to over winter but in summer there's more insect activity and the soil is too hot to store them long term without the plant feeding them in my experience.

    I can't keep voles out of my garden, especially in my potato beds. We dug up our entire garden to put hardware cloth underneath and around edges and they still get in. I then planted my potatoes in 100 gal fabric pots and they got into them. They even climbed my 3 ft tall raised potato bed (lined with hardware cloth) and ate the potatoes, nowhere is sacred. I'm at a loss how to fend off these devastating little creatures. If you could add a segment into one of your vids about this I would be greatly appreciative.🙏

      Beans would be better because they'll help fix nitrogen back into the soil and repeated plantings of potatoes uses quite a bit of nitrogen.

    Something is seriously wrong with my potatoes this year, but there are so many different diseases that I don't know what it is. My variety is supposed to be blight-resistant. My sister noticed whiteflies on the leaves today - could that be the problem? The leaves are turning brown from the edges inward, then the whole plant yellows, weakens, and falls over.
