  • The world's oldest flyable Boeing airliner will makes its last flight on April 26. The classic twin-engine Boeing 247D from the 1930s--one of a mere four remaining in the world, and the only one flyable--has been in the Museum's collection since 1966. Based at the Museum's Restoration Center on Paine Field in Everett, Wash., it was featured at airshows and other events around the country from 1994 until 2004. At noon on Tuesday the 26th, the 83- year-old airliner flew to the Museum's Boeing Field campus to be retired for permanent display.
The crew for this special flight: Two Boeing test pilots with experience at the controls of the 247, Mike Carriker and Chad Lundy. Carriker was the chief test pilot for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, so on this trip, the world's oldest Boeing airliner is flown by the chief pilot of Boeing's newest airliner.

You can see the unmistakable lineage of the B-17 in this fine aircraft..

I loved the juxtaposition of this old Boeing airliner that used to be the highest tech of its day, to the Boeing 737 landing behind it.

My Dad got his multi engine airplane rating in this very airplane in 1940, the event is recorded in his log book at the time.
He got hired by one of United Airlines predecessor airlines in 1941 and then continued flying for United retiring in 1978 at the then required retirement age of 60 flying Boeing 747s. During his career my Dad also flew the proving runs for the 727 for United, at that time he was the very first pilot at United to fly the 727, the very same N7001U 727 that is also in the Boeing Museum of flight.

The lines... it truly looks like a 2-engine civilian-ized B17! The design language of the company in that era is unmistakable

My personal opinion, for what it's worth, is that the crew should have worn the uniforms that they wore in the day rather than modern airline uniforms. It just would seem more fitting for the final flight of a grand old lady like that.
But again, that's just my opinion.

Nice design. You can see some of the 299 designs in her. Just got outclassed almost immediately by the DC-2/3. Couldn't imagine trying to land one of these as they had no flaps. Once had a B&W postcard of some United stewardesses standing in the doorway of this plane. Fetched a nice price for it on ebay.

Not surprising is the 247 resembles the B-17. Shame to see such a beautiful plane be put on static display.

This doesn't look like a 247D. The D model had the windshield sloped backward like most aircraft of the day. The original 247's had the forward sloping windshield but the D was sloped back. They found the forward sloping windshield caused ground lights to reflect on the windshield. It also increased drag slightly. If this is a D model then it was a modified older 247 that they didn't change the windshield on. Nice old plane though. Sad to see it retired from flying but I do understand wanting to preserve it for museums so people can see the past.

The big problem with the B247 is that the wing box goes through the passenger compartment cutting down on the revenue generating seats & making getting from the front to the back of the plane.

Douglas fixed the problem by making the fuselage big enough to run the main spars under the floor.

I wonder if that husk of a bare fuselage is still sitting at the south end of the runway (off to the west, against a fence), with grass growing up through it, having been mowed around for years. I always thought it looked like a DC-3, during a decade of driving by in the background there, on my commute up & down I-5. I haven't been by in the daytime in a few years now. My first thought upon seeing the 247 above was "oh, did they finally do something with..." but then I realized that'd have to have been a faster resto than at all possible.
Maybe too precious for anyone to bring themselves to actually scrap... but also probably too far gone to restore.
I wonder if it's still there.

There is a section of very old fuselage that the airport's fire station uses for training down on the south end of the field. That may be what you're referring to.

Nostalgia; the Boeing 247 was Boeing's competitor to the Douglas DC-2 and DC-3. Guess it's obvious who the winner was. None the less this Boeing 247 was right out to the golden age of Flight. The wonderment of loosing the bounds of earth was still exhilarating magic to everyone then. Anyone notice that Shirley Temple filmed her classic "The Good Ship Lollipop" in the isles of a DC-2 at the old now closed Los Angeles airport? ua-cam.com/video/WLLSqpYyPD8/v-deo.html

    Prestem a atenção no video.

It's simply too risky (not to mention expensive) at this point to keep that airplane flying. Spare parts have to be made by hand, and the airframe was never designed to fly this long in the first place. Better the old darling should have a gracious retirement.

    • @37silverstreak1
      @37silverstreak1 6 років тому +9

Yeah, sure go ahead and keep flying it until something goes wrong and it crashes and then lose an Incredibly rare aircraft completely. She deserves her retirement, let her rest!
