Back when this came out I was in college, and went home for a weekend visit. Some of my old friends and I went to see this, and I thought that it was just horrible. A week later I went on a phenomenally bad date, but met another girl. I ended up giving her a ride back to the dorms, and she forgot her book bag in my car. I returned it the next day, and sat there chatting with her. I mentioned how bad I thought this movie was. A few minutes later one of her friends came by to see if she wanted to go to the movies...to see Bill & Ted! We looked at each other and laughed so hard. We've been married now for 33 years, and yeah, Bill & Ted finally grew on me.

This was primarily shot in and around Phoenix, Arizona. I was 17 when it came out, but 14/15 the summer they were filming here. The Circle K (convnience store/bodega) was recently sold by the chain to a local merchant, and they hosted a B&T viewing on the outside wall of the store before it closed. It was most triumphant.
Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves are like two peas in a pod and they were made to play these characters and if you put these two together, it's like magic. Please react to *Bill and Ted's bogus journey!* 🤘😎
I love this movie. I was 17 when released in theaters. Loved it so much I ended up majoring in History in college and later had a cat named Socrates Johnson.
I saw this when it came out and everything he did afterwards was him trying to break that Ted character from his persona. He did Ted so well; it was hard to see him as anything else for a bit. His real big break came from Speed and the Matrix
Yeah, he still had a bit of "stoner" in his character in Dangerous Liaisons. I remember thinking that he would never escape the Ted stereotype. Couldn't be more happy to have been wrong.
I feel like if memory serves, I happened to see this when I was a kid in the 90's, then literally the next thing I saw Keanu in was the Matrix and I struggled with it at first hahaha
My wife and I were 28 when this came out, recorded on VHS tape off TMC and invited over anyone who'd come over to watch their reaction, about 15 times within 3 months time. EVERYONE LOVED IT!!!!! So obviously your reaction was a treat!! Thank You!!!
"Strange things are afoot at the Circle K." I think my favorite line! I also really appreciate that the history (including the languages spoken) is pretty accurate. Well, with the exception of Genghis Khan...he's kind of just a caricature. Rufus is played by the very famous George Carlin and one of the three people sitting in the future is Clarence Clemons (sax player for the E Street Band). Both have sadly passed but they were legends.
I have a suggestion that you might not be expecting. In 1993 He appeared in Shakespeare's "Much ado about nothing" Also appearing Kenneth Branaugh, Emma Thompson, Kate Beckinsale, Michael Keaton and a few others you will recognize,

It should also be noted that there's some question if it was a real device. I know that examples of iron maidens do exist, but nobody is really sure if they were actually used during medieval times, or if they were created later as a way to "spice up" tales of that time period.

Another film with a young Keano is "Parenthood". He doesn't star, but has a decent part in the film, playing a very similar character. For how well it was received at the time, it's kind of been forgotten about. It's another comedy, but not in the same style as Bill & Ted, but good all the same. It also stars Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, and a few others.

I was 16 when this movie came out. Saw it in the theaters two times and loved it. Still to this day one of my favorite comedies. The guy that plays Bill actually plays one of the vampires in The Lost Boys. I haven't seen him in any other movies other than the Lost Boys and The Bill and Ted movies. Really enjoyed this reaction and glad you enjoyed the movie. It is definitely one of the comedies that doesn't have to make sense but still so fun to watch. Be excellent to each other, Dawn Marie and have a great day!
I saw this when it came out and told a friend how much I liked the idea of a time-traveling phone booth. They asked me if I had ever seen Dr. Who. I had not. But when the reboot happened with #9 I was there for it. :) So B&T is indirectly responsible for that.
I was raised to use 'anxious' as a word meaning basically anticipating, or excitement about some event. Only around age 15 did i realize it also meant fearful or worried. So, maybe that's a North American usage, that doesn't translate elsewhere, or perhaps it was just that before the 1990s, it hadn't become such common byword in pop psychology.
Point Break for Keanu an Patrick Swayze and surfing/bank robbing. And The Lost Boys for Keifer Sutherland and “Bill’ for vampires. Both. excellent early 90s/late 80s!!! you will love them both I promise
Great reaction. How cute that you accept that they can travel through time in a phone booth, but had a problem with how convenient it was that they found suits of armor that fit! This is one of the reasons we all love you.
An Iron Maiden is a medieval torture/execution device. It’s a box, roughly the size of a human body, with the walls and doors lined with spikes. A person would be forced inside, and when the maiden is closed, the spikes are driven into the body just enough to make them bleed to death Also, both sequels to this are also awesome
Bill told Siggy that he just had a minor Oedipal complex. In Greek mythology, Oedipus was a character who fell in love with his mother (not quite that simple, though) in an inappropriate way, so in psychology the term "Oedipal complex" is used for this condition. Of course, in Bill's case it's his stepmother, who is barely older than he is, so it's understandable (and in Oedipus' case, he didn't know it was his mother, but his name is still used in psychology anyway).
I saw this when it came out on video. So I was 22. The amazing thing is watch Point Break (1991), you see Keanu mature really well, and amazing change from a movie from 2 years earlier in Bill & Ted.
Bill had a minor "Oedipal Complex", meaning he was attracted to his mother, Missy. Alex Winter (Bill) really got typecast as this kind of character and is known for the Bill & Ted films and as a supporting character in "The Lost Boys". My favorite Keanu film is, of course, "The Matrix." I probably saw it whenever it was first released to video.
This movie is an all-time cult classic. Science fiction comedy at it’s most creative, imaginative, and hilarious. Please return to this series soon and check out the sequel “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey” This is a sequel that rivals the original and has one of the best conclusions ever to a cinematic saga. First off, hi, Dawn Marie !!! Before i even jump into this one, i want to lay this request before you: POINT BREAK (1991) Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze I am certain that you'd really like it - OK, let's go... Iron Maiden (aside from being a medieval torture device one could be locked inside) was an early Heavy Metal band.
You mean Johnny Moronic? "How big is the data?" "Much larger than you have capacity for." "No problem." "OK, here it is." "ARGH! I have to get this data out of my head!"
"I Love You To Death" (1990) has a stellar cast, which includes a very raggedy-looking Keanu. His role is a supporting one, but the whole thing is very worthwhile, and his appearance is simply priceless. "Much Ado About Nothing" (1993) has a very pretty style, and features Reeves as the spiteful Prince John The Bastard.
Nice one again, Dawn, you got right into the spirit of the teen humour. I saw this in the early 90s, not so long after release, but I was already middle-aged. As a former HS history teacher, I was strangely unoffended. An overlooked gem in the Keanu catalogue is 1990's 'Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter' retitled in America as 'Tuning In'. Reeves actually isn't very good in it imo, but you get an outrageous turn from Peter Falk with great support from Barbara Hershey. In 'The Gift' (2000) Reeves finds his metier as a 'heavy', though it's not a large part. It stars Cate Banchett and is not to be confused with a 2016 film of the same name. The first mentioned is one I know will appeal to your quirky sense of humour.
By now, we've almost forgotten Keanu's Shakespearean turn in Kenneth Branagh's '93 "Much Ado About Nothing", but it was quite the punchline in its day.
My brother, who knows how much I like history, forced me to watch this on VCR, probably in the early 90s. I completely loved it. That year, for my birthday, he made a VCR taping of my then-three favorite movies: "Crossing Delancey", "The War of the Roses" and this one. It was my favorite VCR tape, and it's probably still floating around somewhere.
As a kid it totally blew my mind that Rufus never actually says his name. The present Bill and Ted were told by their past selves, and they tell their future selves.
My first time was right after Desert Storm. We had a party, all the "Married with kids" dudes And the next day everyone was walking around saying "Be excellent to each other" and "Party on". Hilarious part was seeing a bunch of dudes with shaved heads and berets doing the electric guitar lick. Good times.
My the way the Actor in the sunglasses and in the silver Jacket would be the late George Carolyn one of the greatest Stand-up comedians of All Time. Great job with your reaction to Bill & Ted's excellent adventure .
I was a teenager when this movie first debuted in Theaters and went to see it with friends. The 70s and 80s were totally a righteous time. These Bill & Ted movies along with the two Wayne's World films made for such an excellent time!
I couldn't have been older than 7 or 8 the first time I saw Bill & Ted. Such a fun classic! The sequel, Bogus Journey, is also a lot of fun! While Keanu is a great actor now, he has struggled with roles along the way. For him being not at his best - Bram Stoker's Dracula
Oedipal Complex: wants to sleep with his mother. Psychological theory named after an ancient Greek character, Oedipus, who slept with his mother and killed his father. Also written and sung about in the epic song The End by The Doors.
First watched it in the theaters in 1989 when I was 21... Alex Winters was Bill... he was also in a movie called " The Lost Boys" which was the first big movie for Keifer Sutherland.
I saw this in the theater on opening night with my little brother. I was 12. Have loved this movie all this time. Second one is fun, the third one was EXCELLENT!!!!!!! Can’t wait to see you enjoy the rest of the movies.
Hi Dawn. Nice to see you enjoying another great movie. What is a (IRON MAIDEN) I hear you ask, well there is the Metal Band (IRON MAIDEN) formed in 1975 to present day. Then you have the Medieval torture device called the (IRON MAIDEN) which is a human shaped Metal coffin that stands upright with a door that opens on hinges, there are two versions of this device. The first version has very shape spikes in the back of it on the inside and the hollow door also has spikes on the inside, you put someone in to the device and shut the door impaling the person inside the IRON MAIDEN and they would die a slow painful death. The second version of this device is somewhat the same accept in this version the spikes are Retractable and can slowly be turned by a crank to impale someone. Hoped this answered your question.
Hi Dawn, Great reaction btw! I first watched this on video from the local video shop in 1989 with a few friends. Saw it on the rack and thought the cover looked fun.....became part of my movie history. Fun fact for you; Joan of Arc was played by Jane Wiedlin, who was one of the founding members of the Californian all-girl band The Go-Go's (along with Belinda Carlisle). Have you planned to react to 'Point Break'? Keanu is excellent playing alongside Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey. Cheers! Kev from South of the Border
Bill was played by Alex Winter, he wasn't in many movies before or after this except for the sequels, but he did have a part The Lost Boys with young Keifer Sutherland
You should check out River's Edge (1987). One of Keanu's first movies. Loosely based on a true story (i believe), it also stars Crispin Glover. (George McFly from Back to the Future.)
"Be excellent to each other - AND PARTY ON, DUDES!" Abe Lincoln was most excellent. I was early thirty-something when this came out, and helped me into my second childhood.
There were three Bill & Ted movies. The next one, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, took place about two years later. The third one, Bill & Ted Face the Music, was only made several years ago.
Hi Dawn Marie, I've been binging on your content for the past week, and having an amazing, dare I say "excellent" time? Lol. So all I got to say is, be excellent to one another and party on dudes! LOL
This is one of George Carlin's very few film roles (as Rufus). In the third film, he is replaced by a character named "Kelly", who (in the story) is Rufus' daughter. While the actress is not related, the NAME is an homage to George and his real-life daughter Kelly Carlin
I'm old enough that this was the first movie I saw with Keanu Reeves. Now, every character he plays, is still partially Ted, in my mind. I can't help but picture John Wick saying, "Woah. Dude!"
An iron maiden, as from being a heavy metal rock group, was a medieval torture device. It's shaped to be able to put a human inside. It was made of two pieces joined together by hinges, and had metal spikes welded on the inside. The victim was placed standing up against the back of the device. Once inside, the front was closed, kind of like a door, and locked.
The mall scenes were at metrocenter in phoenix 3 miles from my old home. The Circle K scene was also in south phoenix. Waterloo was golf land sunsplash in Mesa.
The other week, when some of us were discussing "Casablanca", the old silent film "Metropolis" came up. You will be pleased to know that "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" is the same movie as "Metropolis": the plots and characters and even themes line up unnervingly well.
@@johnsensebe3153 Bill and Ted are Maria. Rufus is Fred. Evil gym coach is Rotwang, trying to prevent message of harmony through the use of imposter robots. I don't know who Station is though.
If I remember correctly, an iron maiden was an old torture device consisting of a person-shaped box with spikes all over the interior that would pierce the person inside when the box was closed.
19:10 The joke here is that Waterloo is an actual city in Europe (not really a water park) and is the site of Napoleon's final battle (which he lost). It marked the end of his reign as Emperor of France.
Don't forget about the Rocky horror picture show. It's a big Halloween tradition the famous midnight showing where everyone dress's up as a character and acts out the scene playing behind them on screen! 🤭
My Favorite Keanna movie is, Devil's Advocate, with Keanna, Al Pacino, and Charlize Theron. You'll love it, and PARTY ON, DUDES! You're review was, "most excellent."
I saw this in the theater when it first came out, and it's still one of my favorites. I love a smart "stupid movie" and this one is so witty. One of my favorite bits that many miss is when they meet Joan of Arc (known for claiming to have received messages from God), the way Keanu reaches out is like God reaching toward man on the Sistine Chapel. One with similar vibes for me (including great soundtrack) from the same era that you might be more familiar with is Young Einstein by and starring Yahoo Serious. If you haven't seen it I definitely recommend it, loads of fun.
Dawn, i think not a lot of people saw it in the theater, but when it came out on vhs to rent, it was a big hit, unless i saw it on cable and rental places didn't exist yet, i know we had at least 2 video rental places in my home town in the early 90s, maybe even in the late 80s? so it could have been how i saw it.
There is a real pop star in the cast, by the way. Joan of Arc is played by Jane Wiedlin, the bouncy rhythm guitarist of The Go-Go's, who also wrote some of their biggest hits.
Keanu Reeves/Ted/neo/Wick♥️ and might I add a Canadian He was abandoned by his father at 3 years old and grew up with 3 different stepfathers. He is dyslexic. His dream of becoming a hockey player was shattered by a serious accident. His daughter died at birth. His wife died in a car accident. His best friend, River Phoenix, died of an overdose. His sister has leukemia. And with everything that has happened, Keanu Reeves never misses an opportunity to help people in need. When he was filming the movie "The Lake House," he overheard the conversation of two costume assistants; One cried because he would lose his house if he did not pay $ 20,000 and on the same day Keanu deposited the necessary amount in the woman's bank account; He also donated stratospheric sums to hospitals. In 2010, on his birthday, Keanu walked into a bakery and bought a brioche with a single candle, ate it in front of the bakery, and offered coffee to people who stopped to talk to him. After winning astronomical sums for the Matrix trilogy, the actor donated more than $ 50 million to the staff who handled the costumes and special effects - the true heroes of the trilogy, as he called them. He also gave a Harley-Davidson to each of the stunt doubles. A total expense of several million dollars. And for many successful films, he has even given up 90% of his salary to allow the production to hire other stars. In 1997 some paparazzi found him walking one morning in the company of a homeless man in Los Angeles, listening to him and sharing his life for a few hours. Most stars when they make a charitable gesture they declare it to all the media. He has never claimed to be doing charity, he simply does it as a matter of moral principles and not to look better in the eyes of others. This man could buy everything, and instead every day he gets up and chooses one thing that cannot be bought: Be a good person.♥️
Most excellent choice for a film, Dawn Marie!!! Great reactions to this comedy classic!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽I don't think you would really know Alex Winter (Bill) from anything he's been in. I saw this in the theater in 1989. This is my favorite of the three films. I thought "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" (1991) was OK. I liked "Bill & Ted face the Music" (2020) a little more.
I still can't believe I was 12 when this movie came out in theaters hilarious then hilarious still....im also proud to say this movie was filmed in my home state of Arizona...
At my previous workplace, during a weekly meeting, my boss announced that I had just reached my five-year anniversary working there. She then asked if I had anything I'd like to say... any words of wisdom? My reply: "Be excellent to each other. And PARTY ON, DUDES!"
I watched this movie in 1989 when I was 17. In retrospect, I don't feel as though I watched many movies during the 1970s through the 1990s, but for whatever reasons, I was lucky enough to have happened to watch so many of the classics that are often requested for reactions when they were in theaters for the first (and for most of them the only) time. Some movies really benefit from the large screen and/or the sound system, but mostly it was the experience of watching it with lots of other people that made and still makes the theatrical experience special. For me, this works best with movies that are either very sad or funny (or both--it's rare but possible, like _Ghost_ ), although others may feel different. Maybe I'm weird, but for me action movies don't tend to benefit as much from commercial theaters (unless they're really funny, and some are).
Bill is played by Alex Winter! he co-directed and starred in one of my favorite movies, Freaked! which Keanu Reeves also makes a cameo in. i recommend you check that one out if you'e interested. it's a little like Airplane but in a Ratfink-style circus haha
11:39 You haven’t seen convenient yet. 12:34 Exactly, Dawn. 24:01 Man, even in 1989 they were having trouble with high school shooters. San Dimas High School football rules!!
Grew up with this as a small kid, I had the VHS, and in the beginning was Keanu cherio commercial and a contest to win things from the move that Missy was in. Alwx Winters is Bill and also in the lost boys and one of my personal favorites Freaked.
An underrated Keanu Reeves movie, probably because he's a co-star, is "Parenthood". Very funny movie with an all-star cast including Steve Martin and Rick Moranis.
If u haven't already watch Constantine which is an amazing movie and after 20 years a part two is finally being made. Another one is My Own Private idaho in which he stars alongside his best friend who tragically died from a drug overdose at the age of 21. This is a beautifully made film.wiith great casting and u get to see a different Keanu than any other movie he has been in.
I subscribe to the theory that John Wick is merely Ted that went to Military school. 🤣
Isn’t he Russian?
@@stephenbarrett8861I didn't pay that much attention to John Wick TBF.
What about John Constantine and Johnny Mnemonic?
John Wick is Neo in a matrix designed to contain him.
As a child of the 80’s, this movie was literally everything to me growing up.
Add "Constantine" to your must see Keanu Reeves watch list.

First off, hi, Dawn Marie !!!
Before i even jump into this one,
i want to lay this request before you:
POINT BREAK (1991)
Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze
I am certain that you'd really like it -
OK, let's go...
Iron Maiden (aside from being a medieval torture device one could be locked inside) was an early Heavy Metal band.
Johnny Mnemonic is my favorite Keanu Reeves movie. It might be one of his least popular movies, but i really like the cyperpunk universe.
Johnny Mnemonic is one of Keanu’s early sci-fi movies that’s worth a watch
You mean Johnny Moronic?
"How big is the data?"
"Much larger than you have capacity for."
"No problem."
"OK, here it is."
"ARGH!
Great job with your reaction to Bill & Ted's excellent adventure .
medieval times Iron Maiden is a torture device
1980's and up Iron Maiden is a British metal band, one of the best around.
To be more specific, it's a metal box shaped like a person and lined with spikes.
Person goes in. Lid is shut. Person is impaled.
"Anxious" to meet simply meant he was looking forward with anticipation to meeting Ted.
I was a teenager when this movie first debuted in Theaters and went to see it with friends. The 70s and 80s were totally a righteous time. These Bill & Ted movies along with the two Wayne's World films made for such an excellent time!
Well… this was a good thing about the 80s, anyway. I personally remember both decades as being pretty hideous.
Constantine is getting a much awaited sequel. Gotta check it out after this trilogy
The word is that he was so concerned with getting the accent right that it hurt his performance.
I would say Keanu's role in Dracula was light years better than "Much Ago About Nothing"
I was 17 when this came out, and I loved it because Bill and Ted reminded me of me and my best friend David 😂
BTW also if you didn't know, the phone box is a reference/tribute to one of UK's (and one of my favorite sci-fi shows) popular series, _Dr. Who_
Bill was played by Alex Winter, he wasn't in many movies before or after this except for the sequels, but he did have a part The Lost Boys with young Keifer Sutherland
Socrates is my favorite! He takes everything so...philosophically!
"I can't believe Keanu's gotten so OLD!"
Keanu: "I know Tai Chiiii..."
Not in your youth indeed! I watched this in 1989 when it came out. I was 31. I'm going to be 65 next week Which is bodacious.
“He didn’t wipe or wash his hands.”
This was a time before:
-We knew about microbiology
-Manufactured toilet roll
-Had a sink in an outhouse
:-)
Dad and I watched this all the time when I was young. So happy you discovered it.
several lines have became figures of speech still used.
The other week, when some of us were discussing "Casablanca", the old silent film "Metropolis" came up. You will be pleased to know that "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" is the same movie as "Metropolis": the plots and characters and even themes line up unnervingly well.
Whoa! No way!
You should definitely watch the sequel, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. Imo it's even better. Definitely crazier.
19:10 The joke here is that Waterloo is an actual city in Europe (not really a water park) and is the site of Napoleon's final battle (which he lost). It marked the end of his reign as Emperor of France.
The Replacements is one of my favorite Keanu Reeves movies. You should possibly check that one out.
8:33 They didn't install running water in outhouses until 1886, exactly 2 years before they also made them wi-fi accessible. 😉
Let this blow your mind. The keys now exist as a paradox outside of normal space and time.
There is a real pop star in the cast, by the way. Joan of Arc is played by Jane Wiedlin, the bouncy rhythm guitarist of The Go-Go's, who also wrote some of their biggest hits.
15:13 "Wait. Did you- Have you been windin' your _watch?"_
Ah. Dawn, it reassures me that this occurred to you.
Keanu Reeves/Ted/neo/Wick♥️ and might I add a Canadian
He was abandoned by his father at 3 years old and grew up with 3 different stepfathers.
10:32 "Philosophize?"
It's a source of amusement, I know, but that's an actual word.
The man who played Rufus, Bill and Ted's guide, is the great comedian George Carlin. You should react to his routine called The planet is fine. "
I still can't believe I was 12 when this movie came out in theaters hilarious then hilarious still....im also proud to say this movie was filmed in my home state of Arizona...
Got to love George Carlin as Rufus, and seeing young John Wick, the high school years:)
I remember going to see this in the theater when I was in college. I had very low expectations, but was delighted. It's silly, but smart silly.
Dawn, Keanu's first role is a small part in a film called "Youngblood" (1986). It stars Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze as minor league hockey players.
Underrated movie, more reactors should do it.
@@GD-tt6hl ...unlike this one. 😀😀 Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Dawn watched it and enjoyed it but it doesn't hold up over the years.
@@bossfan49 bogus
At my previous workplace, during a weekly meeting, my boss announced that I had just reached my five-year anniversary working there. She then asked if I had anything I'd like to say... any words of wisdom?
My reply: "Be excellent to each other. And PARTY ON, DUDES!"
6:48 They also said Napoleon had rather bad hemorrhoids....combine that with him being like 2 feet tall, no wonder he was so pissed off all the time.
Where Napoleon got a swimsuit is one of the great mysteries of our age.
That was his underwear
Grew up with this as a small kid, I had the VHS, and in the beginning was Keanu cherio commercial and a contest to win things from the move that Missy was in. Alwx Winters is Bill and also in the lost boys and one of my personal favorites Freaked.
I lived in Tempe for fifteen years, a suburb of Phoenix Arizona. That Circle K was about two miles from my house.
"Erik the Viking" - There's a good one. I think there's a sea monster in it
An underrated Keanu Reeves movie, probably because he's a co-star, is "Parenthood".
13:05 Iron Maiden,a heavy rock band
Also a medieval torture device.
@@grife3000 Interestingly, the iron maiden wasn't a real medieval torture device. It was invented in Victorian times as a "Medieval torture device"
