- Most non-locals who come to NYC don't realize that there's more to New York than Manhattan. Case in point: Jackson Heights, Queens. It may not have the flashy tourist appeal as places like Times Square and the Statue of Liberty, but the ethnic backgrounds of this and other neighborhoods shape NYC and it's what makes it fun for locals and non-locals alike, whether people realize it or not. Regardless, it still manages to have sites to visit nearby such as CitiField (home of the New York Mets) and Flushing Meadow Park.
The Colombians come out to celebrate on Northern Blvd (in Queens) after the big World Cup 2014 win against Greece 3-0 on Saturday June 14, 2014. While Manhattan has more of a formal, swanky and clear cut feel to it, Queens with its largely diverse ethnic populations gives you a different and more exciting flavor. It's why the best food and shops tend to be in Queens.
Colombians can be a festive bunch, although I can assure you not everyone is crazy and I don't condone doing things like blocking traffic. The white powder is Maizena, which is THE brand for corn starch used in Colombia (and a really good way to make sauces in my cooking experience), which is why you see people being sprayed with it. It's not the other white powder that Colombians are unfairly associated with, since some druglords run their business that way. Just to show that there's more to New York City than Manhattan, and I always love showing all angles of New York City.
