of course you can use a different fabric! but if you do not want to use a zipper, u must incoperate an elastic waistband, if not you will not be able to fit it over your hips when you are wearing it😁

No, I didn't use a serger to overlock the fabric. I used the zigzag stitching with overlock presser foot in my sewing machine
