- these things cost 7-800 EUR online (for this particular lathe) so I figured it cant be that hard to build one, right....right? Turns out there is a reason they cost so much....follow along as I fight through building this steady rest from scraps and garbage with not enough tools and not enough brain. However I learned a ton through this process and now have a working steady rest - is it perfect..no...but it works and I'm really happy with the result!

hi Dimitri, I'm a machinist for 50+ years and to say ''pro'' won't want to wach this is so wrong! we have all got to work with what we got to get the job done and that's what you did, no harm, no foul. i've done way worse things than that lol 😂 😂
Damn son! Fantastic - you must be super happy how that came out. I get so jealous of people who own lathes and all that stuff. For example - I bought 20mm bench dogs from China - took months to arrive because of shipping delays, and it turns out they sent me freakin' 19mm. if ONLY I had a lathe and a sweet steady rest like yours I could turn those 19mm dogs into 20mm! 😝
You can't do that with a normal lathe you need a special additive inversion lathe for that.

I realy like how it turned out and it looks almost the same as mine. Of course with better welding 😂
