The best documentary I've ever seen of Montgomery Clift. It's astounding to see how old and frail he looked when he died considering he was only 46 years old. He had an incredible but brief career as perhaps the best actor to ever become a movie star. Sadly it was a life he never wanted, and it's very difficult for me to reconcile the matinee idol film star with this closeted addicted alcoholic. It's painful to watch his films after his accident, you could see the pain and anguish in those eyes and that lopsided face, how tragic. RIP

Something many people who admire and even emulate Monty Dean and Brando is they leave out the bubbling energy that they all had. That’s because everybody has their own way of expressing it and it doesn’t work when one tries to imitate another.
That man seemed to be totally lost and tormented. Marylin referred to him as "the only person she knew who was in worse shape than herself". And his acting teacher called his career "the longest suicide in Hollywood history". I just feel incredibly sorry for him.
Pray for his soul’s repose. What a quote! “ his career as the longest running suicide in Hollywood history.” Sad. I love his voice though. That’s a God given gift, truly sweetness, salt and light. What a tragedy!. I loved Wuthering Heights.R.I.P. Montgomery.

At 32:26 it's stated outright what seems to be true all of his life. He's reaching for parental love and acceptance like his mother did with her parents.
I think Montgomery Clift deserved all 4 Academy Awards he was nominated for but didn't get because he wouldn't play into the Hollywood machine. He never lived in California but in a brownstone in Manhattan. I think thats the main & only reason he didn't get the award. Directors said that actors being in a movie with Clift made them better actors.

He loved Elizabeth Taylor like a sister because Monty was gay and they say Elizabeth was in love with him for real, but knew about his sexual preference.
MC was handsome talented and seemed a tortured soul. Why? I don't think even he knew. He refused help to sober up and sadly ruined his own life. What a waste BUT there are many wasted lives on Earth. I loved his acting and many of his movies. The Heiress is my fave but there were others, too. Let's NOT make a!saint out of him. He was human and failed in many ways. Let us remember the good, the talent, his movies and give thanks.
He was in constant physical pain after his crash. Prior to the crash he suffered from digestive problems. Nobody says he was a saint. He used drugs and alcohol to help with his physical and emotional pain. I find you very judgemental.
Liz Taylor liked effeminate men, gay men, and those walking the perimeter. Monty was one such. Many women are attracted to gay men; it's curious. They know 'men' all-too-well and they generally distrust other women. They tell me that generally gay men make the very best friends. Interesting.
Yes, very good, a very good video, indepth, far surpassing others of stars that skim across the surface this one tries to get to the depths and succeeds to quite an extent and is interesting. I would like to see a bit about Suddenly Last Summer but never mind as there would seem to be some similarities with Tennessee Williams. What was very touching was the friends he had around him - his lawyer for example who cared about him and others -obviously a lot more than an investment. Yes, it is good this one. Thanks for posting. ( It taught me a bit about myself )
Thank you for posting. "The Heiress" and "A Place in the Sun" remind me that he was a great actor... And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul. Matthew 16:26
It's great film and he was wonderful in it. Everyone was great in it. However, he didn't think so, and was unhappy with the film. Possibly because Olivia de Haviland was that much better, and it rattled him.
It's a shame Monty wasn't born in more accepting times, he had just missed the mark of the 70s which was a real turning point for gay people. The fact that he was going to play the role of a closeted army officer shows that he was heading towards a more secure direction within himself, and that's not something he would have considered doing earlier in his career, (He turned down Hitchcock's Rope because he feared he would be outed). It's really sad that he died just before he got to play any gay character roles.
Tom Kruz nasljednik Montgomery Cilfa, sličnost velika i fizička i u nastupu.Stalno sam se pitala na koga me podsjeća Tom Cruz i danas gledajući western Crvena rijeka shvatila.Slicnost fizička i u nastupu očigledna.😊
In the end of matters it wound up being those his mother held in such high regard showed as much regard for their connection to something she birthed and created. Can’t get much better than that. He made her dream come true in that sense. He was a remarkable talent.
It's not anybody's Business what his Sexual Preference was,"I had two Gay Uncles and I think that they were the most successful "!And one uncle I never knew he was Gay until I saw a Picture of him with a teenage girl and my Sister told me she was his Daughter and was married until he discovered he was Gay!
clift hated his mother...called her vile names.....outrageously handsome as a young man...he loved the theater...and once he stopped imitating the lunts..he was extremely well-received..the movies called and refusing to sign a contract...agreed to red river basically because he was broke.....analyzing the script day and night he had a woman on the set..ultimately thrown out by the movie director...who he confided with and trusted...to the dismay of everyone..... clift would disappear on occasions and would be seen many times with a new "boy"....his homosexuality was well known...though there is no evidence his downfall had anything to do with it...he was well at ease with men...and there is zero evidence he had ever had sex with any of the women he had relationships with.... Monty was so into pills that he was called a walking PDR...carrying around a bag full of every pill known to man...he eventually saw a shrink who not only enabled his drinking but it was said had fallen in love with Monty.. self-destructive to the point where his behavior was so bad....no one wanted to be around him....taking food from others and throwing it ....is an example of his revolting behavior....Monty would isolate himself more and more... needless to say his downfall gained speed and after buying a nyc brownstone...he frequented the weirdest gay bars in the city....his home a revolving door to hustlers tricks and who knows who.... on at least 2 occasions Monty passed out drunk/on pills had to be rescued actually carried out..of a bar that catered to people who were sexually attracted to dead people...Monty found laying on a slab..while dozens of people were touching and grabbing him..and making weird noises... well....he was found dead in bed...glasses on... naked...by his house man.... Clift.....was a tormented man who needed drugs and booze to go on...no one has ever explained why...maybe it was his mom....maybe he couldnt handle fame....who knows.....he made his mark and history holds him in high regard for ironically doing the one thing he hated most....making movies... ps....Jack Larson...was the best person Monty had ever had is his life...but he didnt know it....
The story about him supposedly being laid out on a pool table like a human buffet at the back room of a seedy bar while weird people buzzed around him like insects is no doubt made up lol. The guy who told that story was a shady character.
Jack Larson had given some contradictory statements, one minute he'd say Monty didn't have a drinking problem because "everyone drank back then" then he'd say Monty was falling down drunk and he rushed him to his therapist office to prove he needed help for his drinking? He's not really trustworthy.
A horrid scene from a biography of him. He went to a hood homosexual biker bar and laid himself down on the pool table like a human buffet. Was sexually tormented - exactly what he sought. He was pitiable after his horrible crash. Once he lost his perfect beauty, his psyche became twisted. He continued to be a great actor: always described as "vulnerable". He was on shaky ground, and if you know his actual life while you watch these performances, it is painful. Monroe said his life was a "long suicide", and although I believe she was murdered, she also traveled the same route.
I don’t think cancer is caused from hate but I think it’s caused from years of stress. We can hate something and then turn towards what makes us happy but when your stressed you can’t be happy.
Monty’s parents resided in Chattanooga, Tennessee before moving to Omaha. While filming “Wild River” in 1960 near Cleveland, Tn., Clift would sometimes visit relatives who still lived in Chattanooga.
I understand what an amoebic infection can do to your health and why it could bring one to self medicate and self destruct. I've been living in that hell for many years. Beware when you travel (swimming, eating and drinking.) I have my doubts about the rest of his supposed troubles.
Because even though you may cure the infection your intestines can be ruined by forever inflammatory problems that make for week long bouts of nausea and everyday intense pains that you will try anything to escape.
Why do you people think he was so tortured, that is before his accident. ? I feel his friends did understand him. I feel that he hated himself! So sad. Such a wonderful talented handsome man who acted from deep down in my heart!!
on the recordings his mother came accross as a controlling, horrible woman, the best thing he did was separate himself from his mother, there was a great love between Montgomery & Elizabeth taylor,.they became lifelong friends, he was a handsome, talented actor,
Montgomery mama was saying in it right when she said her son was a homosexual. A mother knows her child. Monty was just fighting with himself trying not to be homosexual because of society, but at the end, Monty accepted himself to what he truly was, which was, he was a homosexual.
Actually, he did have sexual relationships with women which makes him bi-sexual. Rather an untrue generalisation to say a mother always knows her child.
Such a beautiful and talented actor he was and unfortunately was self tormented for being gay at a time when being gay was not excepted so sad my heart goes out to him but to all his fans today do you know what the sad thing is were his mother buried him the cemetery is so over grown middle of no were there are trees and bushes and weeds all over his grave if you don't believe me please type his name and place of burial you will be very shocked rip Montgomery cliff and know you are always loved

@@mjc5509 And after. I still couldn't take my eyes off of him when he was on that screen. I think it was his eyes. It is sad how his life panned out though.
Actually he had bad skin and an odd shaped head that was too big for this slight frame. And he was difficult to photograph He was also impossibly hairy. Never a shot without a shirt on. This is all true by the way. His 'great beauty' is largely a myth. My other actors were way more beautiful than Monty. He was a great actor though.
@@heathermallard9197 His eyes always told the stories; they were absolutely mesmerizing. 😍📽🎬🤩
@@mjc5509 He was totally hot.... To sum it all up about how we ladies would swoon over him & his looks nowadays, just listen to Olivia Newton-John's 1978 song which is the titled album, "Totally Hot". Happy listening.

What an excellent documentary no bells and whistles just plain facts
Such a tremendous actor. So beautiful.
Mr Montgomery Clift nothing but perfection man and what he did or attracted to another is no one’s damm business HOLLYWOOD destroy mr Montgomery just because his look was damaged due to a car accident and his sexuality it just wrong to treated anybody that way much less mr Montgomery cliff so beautiful he was indeed Rest In Peace SIR you were the gentleman as always and will be a legend ❤❤ and thank heaven for Mrs Elizabeth Taylor which was a beautiful lady gone too soon was there to loved mr Montgomery who he was ❤❤which was humble don’t care for fancy things because he just love acting ❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing this! Excellent quality.
I love monty! he would have turned 100 today..
From me too!
So sad... 😥 what a waste of talent and life... RIP, Monty... you are now free of your demons...🌠
MONTY WAS NEVER THE SAME AFTER HIS ACCIDENT ..RIP
Sadly I agree.
What bothers me is why did they allow Montgomery to drive so drunk? Couldn't he have crashed on the sofa after the party? Geez.. Some friends he had?
@@angelacarleton9575 He wasn’t so drunk!! (he had only 1 drink) he was just exhausted from a long work day! And, he had good friends!
Worried for his looks.
Enjoyed this episode of "Biography" very much. Though I'm surprised they didn't mention his classic Oscar winning 1949 film "The Heiress" at all. Thank you for uploading the whole episode for us to enjoy ! CHEERS !! :-)
I was going to say the same thing. If I were Olivia de Haviland, I would have gone with him. Too gorgeous!
@@lynnolmsted4833 Thank you for your follow up comment, Lynn ! :-)
Something many people who admire and even emulate Monty Dean and Brando is they leave out the bubbling energy that they all had. That’s because everybody has their own way of expressing it and it doesn’t work when one tries to imitate another.
Magnetism and depth.
Montgomery.
That is so sad 😞! He is one of my favourite actors.
Marilyn Fix it!
He was one of the finest actors ever. Women were drawn to him like crazy and he was handsome as all get-out. He was a method actor before that term even existed.
I WISH SOME ONE HAD TAKEN INTEREST IN HIM AT A EARLY AGE !
SHOWED HIM HOW INDEARING AND WONDERFUL HE WAS !

Before Liz tried to "set up Monty with men", she was in love with Monty. But he politely turned her down.
Monty was so damm gorgous
I'm sorry he had such difficulties-I Adore him.
He was beautiful alright....
Do you have his picture above your bed?! 🤣

He was a beautiful man
A marvellous actor whose inner vulnerability was evident in his sensitive portrayal of complex characters .
My favourite actor !
At 32:26 it's stated outright what seems to be true all of his life. He's reaching for parental love and acceptance like his mother did with her parents.
No mention was made of his role in Tennessee Williams' "Suddenly Last Summer." Monty was a great actor.
Superlative
I think Montgomery Clift deserved all 4 Academy Awards he was nominated for but didn't get because he wouldn't play into the Hollywood machine. He never lived in California but in a brownstone in Manhattan. I think thats the main & only reason he didn't get the award. Directors said that actors being in a movie with Clift made them better actors.
omg he was beautiful!
It was that seven minute role in Judgement that I remember the best of the movie. Seven minutes!
This was great. Montys fantastic. I see Tom Cruise as his ambitious, determined and annoying little brother.
TOM Hey Monty I’m gonna conquer the world what do you think about that.
MONTY Go ahead just leave me alone.
Tom Cruise is actually, all round, a better actor. Monty was great - but versatile he wasn't.
TOM CRUEZ IS NOT HIS OWN MAN . HE IS OWNED BY SCIENTOLOGY GROUP HE SOCIALIZES WITH . HE IS THE MAIN LIFE TIME CONTRIBUTOR . TO THE ACULT . AND THEY CHOSE HIS WIVES FOR HIM . FOR COMERCIAL GAIN . What a beautiful man, the camera loved him.
Dang. He had relations with Cameron too?
Being gay was box office poison. Monty got a raw deal in Hollywood.
He loved Elizabeth Taylor like a sister because Monty was gay and they say Elizabeth was in love with him for real, but knew about his sexual preference.
they looked like brother and sister
Monty was a tortured genius.
They really do! Lol I should know I am bisexual.
I'd take a gay best friend. I have a trans friend who is cool

Yes I'm being a bitch cause it's fun to trigger easily triggered people.
He was a great intense actor and particularly in The Heiress.
The Heiress. Has to be one.of THE Best movies that came out of Hollywood

Wow, this is a "most"interesting insight into the life of this remarkable actor; I was unaware of his fine upbringing! !
Tom Kruz nasljednik Montgomery Cilfa, sličnost velika i fizička i u nastupu.Stalno sam se pitala na koga me podsjeća Tom Cruz i danas gledajući western Crvena rijeka shvatila.Slicnost fizička i u nastupu očigledna.😊

I loved Montgomery Clift. Favorite film he did... Red River.
was Marilyn Monroe in that movie ?

No, that was The Misfits
In the end of matters it wound up being those his mother held in such high regard showed as much regard for their connection to something she birthed and created. Can’t get much better than that. He made her dream come true in that sense. He was a remarkable talent.
Yes,And He Was a Great Actor And HE knew how to PULL us into the Movie

No Way!!! Tom Cruise is no where as good looking as Montgomery Clift!!!
i love him so so so much❤❤❤❤❤❤
clift hated his mother...called her vile names.....outrageously handsome as a young man...he loved the theater...and once he stopped imitating the lunts..he was extremely well-received..the movies called and refusing to sign a contract...agreed to red river basically because he was broke.....analyzing the script day and night he had a woman on the set..ultimately thrown out by the movie director...who he confided with and trusted...to the dismay of everyone.....
clift would disappear on occasions and would be seen many times with a new "boy"....his homosexuality was well known...though there is no evidence his downfall had anything to do with it...he was well at ease with men...and there is zero evidence he had ever had sex with any of the women he had relationships with....
A lot of false statements in your comment
The story about him supposedly being laid out on a pool table like a human buffet at the back room of a seedy bar while weird people buzzed around him like insects is no doubt made up lol. The guy who told that story was a shady character.
Jack Larson had given some contradictory statements, one minute he'd say Monty didn't have a drinking problem because "everyone drank back then" then he'd say Monty was falling down drunk and he rushed him to his therapist office to prove he needed help for his drinking? He's not really trustworthy.
Wow!!!! That theory sums his personal private life up in one half true but not true statement. 🤔
Damn! He was a hairy bear!
That was the first I saw without his shirt.
His brother sounds exactly like him.
I noticed that too !
I closed my eyes and listened and I totally agree.
Sounds like Peter Graves is the narrator.
And even says so in the credits at the end. Good job Sherlock.
I find myself disliking Sunny Clift (mother). Reminds me of how mum used to be.
When you are gay, and in that era, his subconscious he had a secret. How far we have come.

The true and only love of Liz Taylor.Richard Burton once said to him:she likes me but she loves you
