I think Lucifer only showed up late because he had to wait to get involved until the deal he made with heaven was broken. i.e: "No hellborn will be harmed on extermination day." He could only step in after Adam started to fight Charlie, who does count as a hellborn. There was no rule saying demons couldn't fight back, as it was thought to be impossible for them to win. So since he let them break deal first, heaven will have to admit Adam was in the wrong and thus NOT go back down to hell with a few higher angels to punish everyone for "daring an uprising," as Zestial would say. I can just imagine Sera's face when she realizes they can't justify retaliation.
This, it is mentioned in the show earlier on in one line where Adam lets Charlie know that hellborn are only spared because of Lucifer. It could have used a line from Lucifer at the end to draw attention to it. Just when he punched Adam "and now that you've harmed my daughter the deal is off!"

Which I'd agree with, because I don't see how them one-sidedly changing the time between exterminations wouldn't violate the contract. Unless Lucifer didn't bother to negotiate anything outside of the safety of the Hellborn. Which might explain why Lilith and him separated.
Regarding the speed run that was this season. They had a gamble to make. And I think it hinged on the respect they had for their audience. They bet on the audience being able to make the connective tissue in their imagination. They had a limited time frame and getting top notch broadway voices on board was critical to Viv's vision. So brevity was needed. But they did an amazing job of threading that needle. Anything less and even those of us who got hooked by it would not be able to follow the show. Given the resources they had it was an astounding creation. Even with its shortages it created amazing stories and scenes. I am hoping they have an increased budget coming up because I believe Viv has more story to tell.
The way I now want Skyen to have a little vox-inspired v-tuber and for the show reaction channel to be called TVSkyen after the joke about vox being a reactionary youtuber.
I'm pretty sure Lucifer's deal with heaven stated he couldn't interfere as long as no hellborne were harmed. Once Dazzle died, the deal was broken and he could come help. (Foreshadowed by the sacrificial lamb image in the Dad song.)

So, that cheeky remark about 'shows that are similar to Hazbin' leads me to assume that watching Helluva Boss is a given. If that's the case, I just want to give one heads up about the show, and that's that, where Hazbin Hotel hits the ground running from the word go due to its low episode count, by contrast, Helluva Boss takes a few episodes to find its footing. It's very much a show that gets much better as it goes and they figure out what they want to do with it. As for completely different indie animation to take a look at though, if you haven't seen it already, I'd love to see you take a look at the pilot for The Amazing Digital Circus. I feel like there's definitely a lot to take interest in the animation there.
Lots of people keep saying the Vees should have done more or be removed... But they are effectively a 'ordinary sinner family' in Hell, and give us an insight into how everyone views Charlie without having to create new characters for that purpose. Plus how Vox feels is probably how a lot of how the Pride ring is going to feel soon, thanks to Katie Killjoy, Velvet's postings, and his own hypnovision.
I mean, they do a lot, it's just that most of it is character work, rather than plot work, and a lot of folks just don't understand that character work is valuable. And hell, it's a musical, the genre is far more concerned with character than plot.
I really like the end discussion about who the show is for and how certain people, myself included, are more able to fill in gaps and accept the show for what it is compared to others who bounce hard off of it. Like personally I have a hard time imagining the seasons being any longer than it is. It felt perfect to me. Not to say that more couldn't work, but while I understand the criticisms of the pacing, I don't feel them at all when I watch it myself.
I'm not a theater kid, don't have religious trauma (I grew up protestant but now I'm a nonchalant atheist) and I have always disliked musicals, but this show and the music speak to me on such a deep level. I don't know why. I recognize that the story was rushed, but like you say, I was able to kind of fill in the blanks, and accepted that some things (such as Mimzy showing up for 5 minutes) were just characters who would come back later in the series and needed to get their introduction kind of out of the way, while also using them as temporary plot devices to move the current plot along. There was so much more that I loved about the show than things that I felt critical about, and I'm just hoping that Amazon heard the feedback and gives Vivienne more episodes.
I admit, I love Hazbin Hotel. Part of that might just be that you don't get animated musical tv shows, and even in terms of movies we've been in a dry spell for a bit here. Like what else is this soundtrack competing with right now, Wish? I mean my god making 9 episodes each with at least two fully animated musical numbers put out on streaming is something that is the next best thing to impossible. But one thing I've seen a lot of is the discussion of the shows pacing framed in ways I think aren't very useful, (and to be clear I don't think Skyen is doing this, I think he has been very understanding of the constraints creatives are under) and I think it puts the blame in the wrong spot which is just going to lead to more shows being produced that are squished harder. The talking point that gets me is "oh the pacing in this show is so terrible because the writers and creatives are bad at there jobs and wrote a rushed thing" when the talking point should be "the pacing in this show is bad because companies and publishers don't think we deserve it" The biggest victim of this current corporate policy I can think of is Owl House. And much like Hazbin I think Owl House managed to do a fantastic job with the tools it was given. That montage that squeezed a whole half season of show into a few minutes is mastefully done even if i can't watch it without getting mad that Disney stole the actual third season from us. There are certainly people who don't like Hazbin for reasons other then the rushed pace and that is fine, but i think we are going to continue to get these D+ marvel show length seasons of things squished down and I don't really know what to do about that as a consumer. But putting the blame on the writer who was trying to get something resembling their vision out in 9 episodes instead of on Amazon for only giving them 9 episodes has erked me a bit.
I'm a massive fan of Hazbin at 25. I wouldn't say this show has saved my life (or had any kind of major impact, really. I'm probably too old for it to impact me like that lol), but it's just such a perfect combination of all the things I love in media. I love music and musical numbers, the artstyle looks like something I would draw if I could, the characters are all wonderful, the animation style is just perfect, the voice actors are brilliant. This show gets me on a primal level. Watching the show is just an all-around joyful experience. it's a bit disheartening that they couldn't fully realise the narrative potential due to short runtime (and their decision to not spread this plot arc over 2+ seasons), but it really only bothers me when I think about the show after watching it. In the moment, it's always just blissful. Truly a gem.
in regards to Lucifer coming in late, Georgia Dow gave a great insight in her Lucifer's Depression video, that perhaps he was watching over the entire time but did not interfere until absolutely necessary, if not, he was going to let Charlie do this on her own so he would not overtake her journey and her glory, to avoid helicopter parenting. i tried to sum it up haha but she explains it really well!

48:30 I'm sorry, but what? Keekee has a cameo at the start of every episode. The fact she is cuddling up to Pentious in episode 7 was a major indicator that Pentious would be the character to be redeemed as he is the only character other than Charlie and Lucifer that Keekee is comfortable around. Like, a lot of people are speculating that Keekee is attracted to pure souls and will be used to indicate a Sinners readiness for redemption down the line because of that ("Key to redemption")
As other people have pointed out Lucifer pardoned all of the hellborn from the extermination but as for why he didn't/couldn't interfere in Helluva Boss it is also mentioned that contracts made with a Deadly Sin (another name for the rulers of Hell's rings) are everlastingly binding so its likely that Lucifer was just waiting for Adam to break Heaven's end of the deal before he could intervene
I totally agree about flawed, niche creations being far more enjoyable/interesting than things made to please everyone. The fact that such an unabashedly "cringe" passion project has been taken up by Amazon and gained such a large & dedicated following is so inspiring, and a big part of why I love Hazbin/Helluva so much despite their numerous issues. Helluva Boss is, in some ways, even more flawed than Hazbin, but on a personal preference level I prefer Helluva for its sheer ridiculousness & surprising depth to the characters (god i love them). I'm so endlessly excited to see if you do end up reacting to Helluva - the hand-crafted nature of it allows the crew to put so many easily missable details in the background and in character expressions that really reward people who go back & look deeper at things. Either way, loved this series and keep doing what you're doing! Good-faith discussions about media are so hard to come by these days lol

I have no idea if they'll go there, but as soon as Sir Pentious turned up in Heaven, I wondered if that meant that Adam will turn up in Hell. It could be pretty interesting if the show actually had a kind of redemption arc for Adam, and forced us as the audience to think about how harshly we judged him (cuz yeah he was definitely a gigantic fkn POS asshat), and confront ourselves with really considering the messages of the show regarding judgment and redemption.
Overall I'd give season 1 a 7/10. The main problem is clearly the pacing. A 12 episode season would have drastically improved it for me. I still enjoyed it though. The characters are really what carry it for me. There isn't a single character I don't enjoy. Sir Pentious in particular is my favorite and I can't wait for how he fucks with Sera in the future.

I hope after everything is over we get a season 1.5 (like horimiya) which fills the in-between down time between the characters. Because let's be honest, the show's only real downside is its pacing. And I would love to see it perfected.

THAT would be a great twist that you can still see, but need to work for it a bit. aaaaaand just a bit later you're picking that apart, I see, I'm not original XD
Four moments I cannot wait for: Angel's freedom, Val's death, Alistor stops smiling (presumably when he has to report to whoever holds the other end of his leash), and Charlie's first kill, if that ever happens.
I've really enjoyed the Hazbin videos. I've been looking forward to each part and I'm legitimately sad that they're done for now. These were exactly the style of reaction vids I vibe with. Hearing people just go off on tangents and give their thoughts on a piece of media in detail even if (or especially when?) it's a bit "incoherent" or "rambling", is just so interesting to me. Almost feels like listening in a conversation, and you brought up so many points I also noticed - and things I hadn't considered, which is the most valuable thing to me when watching other people's opinions/thoughts on media. I'm also definitely one of the people this show "was made for". I'm turning 30 next month but I was "that kid" on tumblr in the mid-2010s and I saw so much of the spirit of that era in the show, yet it also spoke to me as the adult who grew up to love overanalysing media. So, the show felt both nostalgic and intriguing to me on multiple levels. For selfish reasons, I do hope you're also going to tackle Helluva Boss (because I like it, and I am really interested in your takes on that show), but I understand if you want to pursue other avenues.
I don't know whether I'm making myself unpopular but I really doubt more episodes would have saved this series. Helluva boss has the time to properly set up plots and take its time with its characters and the writing is just as all over the place as Hazbin Hotel. I think it's Viv's style of writing which either you like or you don't.
Yeah, admittedly both Hazbin and Helluva rely a lot on external information/fandom involvement to truly flesh out the concepts. watching either show on its own feels like missed potential in one way or another. But it does encourage a LOT of fandom activity and creativity from fans, so it's an interesting tradeoff that you can love or hate

Hell of a boss!! The pilot is a little on the cheap but the animations and fight scenes really take off. Has plenty of musical numbers but not as much as Hazbin. Overlapping voice cast including Broadway stars. Still made by vizziepop but with other writers including a certain old-school type manic UA-cam star.. Also very interesting bc you explore earth and the other rings of Hell
Honestly this series of commentaries has been such a blast- it's been such a breath of fresh air compared to so much of the other review/reaction content floating about on the internet. Your level-headed and well considered analysis has been, as always, a real delight to listen to alongside this deeply flawed yet very compelling show! And... ohoho you sly dog, teasing us at the end! Another show you should definitely consider watching is Blue-Eye Samurai. It's not like hazbin hotel but I think you'd really like it. Its got similar vibes to Arcane.
I recommend Mob Psycho 100. It has an unconventional aesthetic that turns most anime watchers away at a glance, but manages to have some of the best animation and story you'll see in that sphere.
I love Pentious' death scene, to me it managed to hit both a fantastic comic moment while still being sad and a strong moment for his character. They really did manage to have their cake and eat it too and I respect them for going for that. The fact that Vaggie still pretty much lost the fight to Lute disappointed me, should have been a trouncing in my opinion. Overall I'm very happy Skyen liked it, I really liked it too and I hope for a long season 2 which is able to really explore the world. If you're after 'sort of like hazbin hotel' and with a smaller scale story, that is pretty much Helluva Boss. It takes a while to get going though, its pilot didn't impress me.

For a lot of the people in the Discord chat this episode, they didn't seem to like the Vaggie fight not because it wasn't a good payoff for her training last episode, but because she was harmed by something other than an angelic weapon, which in response: Both angels and demons are the exact same in how they exist. They can be harmed in mundane ways, even killed, but will eventually come back. Their soul will remain and reform. But angelic weapons (which i have no idea what they're made of, only watched the show so far) destroy the soul as well. Lute lost her arm (from what we see, it might just be temporary) from ripping it off but every single demon we've seen have had similar things happen to them with little consequence as well.
Cute background detail: in the scene with Alastor and Nifty on the balcony, you can see Sir Pentious telling Charlie about his crush on Cherrie, and then when he's about to confess to Cherrie before the battle you can see Charlie gushing with little hearts in the background and Vaggie pushes her away lol
I really want to like this show, because I adore these characters as concepts. But have to admit, that I had a lot of trouble watching the show the way it was executed. Many moments couldn’t make me feel something, because it was so just too fast. These long in depth analysis videos help me understand and appreciate the show much more.
Since it is the last episode I must admit that, sometimes, when you're counting 3, 2,1... I pause your video accidentally instead of the episode and it takes a little while to understand what I did
The funny thing is that the way Vox is towards Alastor is pretty much exactly how a whole pile of people are towards Vivzie. Could there be significant issues? Sure, it's possible. Am I going to take the word of a frothing mob of hate-boner asshats that she's a terrible person? Honestly... kinda the opposite, really. I have no idea what sort of person Vivzie is, but I've seen enough online hate-mobs over the years to have a reasonable grasp on the sort of person who joins them, and why they do it.
1- If Alistor is getting his powers from Lilith , when he sings in the Final song "find a way to unclip my WINGS" - it could also be a hint about getting is powers from a person in heaven? not a lot of Sinners having wings. 2- Dont know where i saw it but Vivziepop had 22 episodes planned for season 1 but it was cut down by amazon and it might take 2 years for season 2.
"More than anything" Lover Couple duet was breaking my heart. Razzle and Dazzle are like Keyky they are toys Lucifer bring to life. Angels has broken the deal with Lucifer they killed Hellborn Dazzle. That s reason why Lucifer has shows up after Dazzle's death. Charlie's Canon age is 200 years. #Theory Charlie wasn't first children of Lilith and Lucifer but they all born death. @LadySygerrik Some stories of Lilith have her cursed with the inability to have children, with all of hers being either born dead or dying shortly after being born. I am 42 and Hazbin Hotel conmected to me. I loved Batman:TAS, Gargoyles, and the animated Spawn series. I stayed up way too late to watch The Maxx and AeonFlux. I literally jumped for joy when Deadpool came out, because he was my second favourite comic book character for many years. I also watched every Disney movie that I could, and the first theatrical release of The Little Mermaid was the first movie I remember going to the theatre for. A lot of early internet culture is second or third hand, but Tumblr was a hyper fixation for a couple years. I caught up on the first 8 seasons of Supernatural in about a month, and really only recommend the first 5. I feel like this show is for chronically online oddlings like me with a dark sense of humour who aren't necessarily edgelords.
I'm also of the opinion that astor doesn't have a choice. He can't stop smiling due to either whoever controls him or magic that Alastor cast on himself.

I've been seeing a lot of talking in pairs, discussing Hazbin's and Helluva Boss' writing problems at the same time, like they are on the same level. Idk Helluva Boss has way worse writing than Hazbin in my opinion and, while some of the problems are similiarly rooted, Helluva has also a lot of issues that Hazbin just doesn't really have. I loved Hazbin on a particularly emotional level despite very strongly noticing the writing problems with it, especially the pacing; despite that it just struck something and I keep singing the songs in my head and fangirling all over the characters. I've had a similiar relationship with the Kingdom Hearts series that, for those who knows, has MASSIVE and incredibily naive and surprising problems in its writings that you wonder if an adult person actually wrote it: but I couldn't help falling in love with the characters, what I got, what I saw they were trying to say with them, and just feeling the vibe and atmosphere of the world in such a instantly nostalgic way, the moment I finished the series. Hazbin has been similiar. I didn't personally get this with Helluva Boss, at all. And I think there is a reason for it.
You described my feelings towards Hazbin perfectly at the end, there - this show would have been my entire life if I saw it when I was 16. Now that I'm 26, go to therapy and have a DnD campaign to fill out the character angst quota in my life, it doesn't hit nearly as hard and I find it difficult to look past the rough edges and the pacing issues. But it is interesting and I do feel like I still "get it" and what it's going for in a way. ☺️

Personally I greatly enjoy Helluva Boss, so obviously I'd be super happy for you to continue with that! I will say that I think its approach is distinctly different to Hazbin Hotel though. In my perception HB sort of lacks an overarching plot and focuses squarely on the development and exploration of the characters and their relationships to and interactions with one another; Which I love but I can see how that would be less appealing to others. Helluva is also a lot less of a musical a lot of the time, though it still has at least one-ish song per episode. Also a fair "warning" about HB: the show does take a hot second to really find its footing. Season 1 is very much about the production team figuring out what exactly they want to do and how they want to do it. I like the place it ends up in but it does take a few episodes to get there. Am also curious if you would start by watching the first episode or the pilot. Because honestly, I would recommend starting with the first official episode right away. The pilot is officially not canon anymore and thus has also been removed from the playlist for the show. Of course you could absolutely still watch it first to contrast it with the actual show but I feel like things do change quite a bit between the two and the first ep just seems like a better introduction to me. But I'm sure whatever Skyen ends up doing will work out fine!

Part of the "undertone" of Sir Pentious's death scene is "It doesn't matter how brave you are, if you are going up against a lion". Adam is shown in this how powerful he is, against Alastor, and his over all powers. Sir Pentious didnt have a chance. Also, fun little seed of thought, note how Alastor points out "you should know better than anyone what a soul can accomplish when they take charge of their own fate." It is rather telling if you scope out over the whole story line, and look at all the questions we are asking from "the big picture". Another lovely UA-camr does a talk about Lute, and refers to them as "the Zealot" to the "cult of Adam" mentality. I am also curious on the thoughts in Sera, when Sir Pentious shows up. Its shock but is it "oh god, one got in? EWW" shock or more of a "oh god they CAN get in, what have I done?"

I'm pretty sure this has been commented before but just to add onto the pile, I really like a particular reading of Alastor's fight against Adam, where he's technically correct, he had everything he needed to win against Adam, EXCEPT what Carmilla told Vaggie, right now Alastor is in for his own self interest, he survived and escaped, but if he had something to protect, and actually "fought for love", he would have won
One thing I noticed while watching hazbin hotel was sir pen actions , in the club he bought everyone drinks , saves nifty in episode 5 , he gets the courage to fight with his friends , finds love an makes a selfless sacrifice to protect the woman he loves . Actions worthy of redemption.
One of the reasons why you watching helluvaboss would be super interesting is that i would love to see you react to the same creators working under different circumstances aka the animation getting better over time, the story slowly finding its footing, the creators having the amount of episodes they want and no fear of getting cancelled etc. Like this story will be told in the time it needs (aka 4 seasons) even if it takes 20 years. 😅.

This was an amazing experience! 🩷 Not much else to add, except I've just realized (after this being my third rewatch): when Alastor makes the deal with Charlie, there's all this green magic binding him, especially around the mouth... And then you stopped on the frame of Lute's mask and she has a preeeeettyyyy similar smile there on her mask... My guess: Either first Sera wanted a "solution" to "the sinners problem", so she gets Adam because Adam wants power and so Adam goes to Lilith for that power, OR Adam goes to Lilith (or maybe Lilith manipulates Adam and offers him the power he craves) and then Adam goes to Sera and proposes her to build the Exorcists army. In that aspect, the masks are there because they're Lilith's symbol and she's the one powering them. And you take the hint once Alastor shows his bindings 🤔
On the topic of new things to watch, recently i watched centaur world and it's so good for it's on good i cried for 10 minutes straight in the finale. It tells the story of a horse and its rider in a world that's plagued with war and get separated after a fight and the horse ends up in this fantasy world where EVERYTHING is a centaur. It's on netflix, it's already finished and it seems like everyone is sleeping on it so hard because of the goofy style but it's just such a good animation in general i super recommend it.
Man I don’t think you can say the show is only for its own audience if it’s the most popular thing on Amazon’s UA-cam channel. There’s a popularity to this show I’d love to see a critic grapple with.

I will say this about the sister show to Hazbin Hotel: The females are definitely the forefront of Hazbin Hotel, while it's definitely the males in Helluva Boss. Hazbin focuses on the Sinners while Helluva Boss focuses on the hellborn. They're both good and I'm looking forward to your assessments of the show, and your comparisons between the two.
Funny enough, Sir Pentious did ALL of the things Adam mentioned in his list, He did a selfless act, he didn't steal ANY of the weapons as he explicitly paid for them, and he stuck it to the man by rebelling against the executioners.

I think Lucifer only showed up late because he had to wait to get involved until the deal he made with heaven was broken. i.e: "No hellborn will be harmed on extermination day." He could only step in after Adam started to fight Charlie, who does count as a hellborn.
There was no rule saying demons couldn't fight back, as it was thought to be impossible for them to win. So since he let them break deal first, heaven will have to admit Adam was in the wrong and thus NOT go back down to hell with a few higher angels to punish everyone for "daring an uprising," as Zestial would say. I can just imagine Sera's face when she realizes they can't justify retaliation.
This, it is mentioned in the show earlier on in one line where Adam lets Charlie know that hellborn are only spared because of Lucifer. It could have used a line from Lucifer at the end to draw attention to it. Just when he punched Adam "and now that you've harmed my daughter the deal is off!"

Unless Lucifer didn't bother to negotiate anything outside of the safety of the Hellborn. Which might explain why Lilith and him separated.

Regarding the speed run that was this season. They had a gamble to make. And I think it hinged on the respect they had for their audience. They bet on the audience being able to make the connective tissue in their imagination. They had a limited time frame and getting top notch broadway voices on board was critical to Viv's vision. So brevity was needed. But they did an amazing job of threading that needle. Anything less and even those of us who got hooked by it would not be able to follow the show. Given the resources they had it was an astounding creation. Even with its shortages it created amazing stories and scenes. I am hoping they have an increased budget coming up because I believe Viv has more story to tell.
The way I now want Skyen to have a little vox-inspired v-tuber and for the show reaction channel to be called TVSkyen after the joke about vox being a reactionary youtuber.
I'm pretty sure Lucifer's deal with heaven stated he couldn't interfere as long as no hellborne were harmed. Once Dazzle died, the deal was broken and he could come help. (Foreshadowed by the sacrificial lamb image in the Dad song.)

So, that cheeky remark about 'shows that are similar to Hazbin' leads me to assume that watching Helluva Boss is a given. If that's the case, I just want to give one heads up about the show, and that's that, where Hazbin Hotel hits the ground running from the word go due to its low episode count, by contrast, Helluva Boss takes a few episodes to find its footing. It's very much a show that gets much better as it goes and they figure out what they want to do with it.
As for completely different indie animation to take a look at though, if you haven't seen it already, I'd love to see you take a look at the pilot for The Amazing Digital Circus. I feel like there's definitely a lot to take interest in the animation there.
Lots of people keep saying the Vees should have done more or be removed... But they are effectively a 'ordinary sinner family' in Hell, and give us an insight into how everyone views Charlie without having to create new characters for that purpose.
Plus how Vox feels is probably how a lot of how the Pride ring is going to feel soon, thanks to Katie Killjoy, Velvet's postings, and his own hypnovision.
I mean, they do a lot, it's just that most of it is character work, rather than plot work, and a lot of folks just don't understand that character work is valuable. And hell, it's a musical, the genre is far more concerned with character than plot.
They are just reminder how ordinary sinners behaive, who doesn't want to redeem. In contrast with Hotel cast
Plus I've heard that they will likely have a bigger role to play in season 2 as antagonists so I think they did a good job setting them up for that.
I really like the end discussion about who the show is for and how certain people, myself included, are more able to fill in gaps and accept the show for what it is compared to others who bounce hard off of it.
Like personally I have a hard time imagining the seasons being any longer than it is. It felt perfect to me. Not to say that more couldn't work, but while I understand the criticisms of the pacing, I don't feel them at all when I watch it myself.
I'm not a theater kid, don't have religious trauma (I grew up protestant but now I'm a nonchalant atheist) and I have always disliked musicals, but this show and the music speak to me on such a deep level. I don't know why. I recognize that the story was rushed, but like you say, I was able to kind of fill in the blanks, and accepted that some things (such as Mimzy showing up for 5 minutes) were just characters who would come back later in the series and needed to get their introduction kind of out of the way, while also using them as temporary plot devices to move the current plot along. There was so much more that I loved about the show than things that I felt critical about, and I'm just hoping that Amazon heard the feedback and gives Vivienne more episodes.

I admit, I love Hazbin Hotel. Part of that might just be that you don't get animated musical tv shows, and even in terms of movies we've been in a dry spell for a bit here. Like what else is this soundtrack competing with right now, Wish? I mean my god making 9 episodes each with at least two fully animated musical numbers put out on streaming is something that is the next best thing to impossible.
But one thing I've seen a lot of is the discussion of the shows pacing framed in ways I think aren't very useful, (and to be clear I don't think Skyen is doing this, I think he has been very understanding of the constraints creatives are under) and I think it puts the blame in the wrong spot which is just going to lead to more shows being produced that are squished harder. The talking point that gets me is "oh the pacing in this show is so terrible because the writers and creatives are bad at there jobs and wrote a rushed thing" when the talking point should be "the pacing in this show is bad because companies and publishers don't think we deserve it" The biggest victim of this current corporate policy I can think of is Owl House. And much like Hazbin I think Owl House managed to do a fantastic job with the tools it was given. That montage that squeezed a whole half season of show into a few minutes is mastefully done even if i can't watch it without getting mad that Disney stole the actual third season from us.
There are certainly people who don't like Hazbin for reasons other then the rushed pace and that is fine, but i think we are going to continue to get these D+ marvel show length seasons of things squished down and I don't really know what to do about that as a consumer. But putting the blame on the writer who was trying to get something resembling their vision out in 9 episodes instead of on Amazon for only giving them 9 episodes has erked me a bit.
I'm a massive fan of Hazbin at 25. I wouldn't say this show has saved my life (or had any kind of major impact, really. I'm probably too old for it to impact me like that lol), but it's just such a perfect combination of all the things I love in media. I love music and musical numbers, the artstyle looks like something I would draw if I could, the characters are all wonderful, the animation style is just perfect, the voice actors are brilliant. This show gets me on a primal level. Watching the show is just an all-around joyful experience.
it's a bit disheartening that they couldn't fully realise the narrative potential due to short runtime (and their decision to not spread this plot arc over 2+ seasons), but it really only bothers me when I think about the show after watching it. In the moment, it's always just blissful. Truly a gem.
I don't think there's necessarily an age limit for a piece of media to have such a strong impact on someone, but other than that, agreed
in regards to Lucifer coming in late, Georgia Dow gave a great insight in her Lucifer's Depression video, that perhaps he was watching over the entire time but did not interfere until absolutely necessary, if not, he was going to let Charlie do this on her own so he would not overtake her journey and her glory, to avoid helicopter parenting.

48:30 I'm sorry, but what? Keekee has a cameo at the start of every episode. The fact she is cuddling up to Pentious in episode 7 was a major indicator that Pentious would be the character to be redeemed as he is the only character other than Charlie and Lucifer that Keekee is comfortable around.
Like, a lot of people are speculating that Keekee is attracted to pure souls and will be used to indicate a Sinners readiness for redemption down the line because of that ("Key to redemption")
As other people have pointed out Lucifer pardoned all of the hellborn from the extermination but as for why he didn't/couldn't interfere in Helluva Boss it is also mentioned that contracts made with a Deadly Sin (another name for the rulers of Hell's rings) are everlastingly binding so its likely that Lucifer was just waiting for Adam to break Heaven's end of the deal before he could intervene
I totally agree about flawed, niche creations being far more enjoyable/interesting than things made to please everyone. The fact that such an unabashedly "cringe" passion project has been taken up by Amazon and gained such a large & dedicated following is so inspiring, and a big part of why I love Hazbin/Helluva so much despite their numerous issues. Helluva Boss is, in some ways, even more flawed than Hazbin, but on a personal preference level I prefer Helluva for its sheer ridiculousness & surprising depth to the characters (god i love them). I'm so endlessly excited to see if you do end up reacting to Helluva - the hand-crafted nature of it allows the crew to put so many easily missable details in the background and in character expressions that really reward people who go back & look deeper at things. Either way, loved this series and keep doing what you're doing! Good-faith discussions about media are so hard to come by these days lol

I have no idea if they'll go there, but as soon as Sir Pentious turned up in Heaven, I wondered if that meant that Adam will turn up in Hell. It could be pretty interesting if the show actually had a kind of redemption arc for Adam, and forced us as the audience to think about how harshly we judged him (cuz yeah he was definitely a gigantic fkn POS asshat), and confront ourselves with really considering the messages of the show regarding judgment and redemption.
Overall I'd give season 1 a 7/10. The main problem is clearly the pacing. A 12 episode season would have drastically improved it for me. I still enjoyed it though. The characters are really what carry it for me. There isn't a single character I don't enjoy. Sir Pentious in particular is my favorite and I can't wait for how he fucks with Sera in the future.

Four moments I cannot wait for: Angel's freedom, Val's death, Alistor stops smiling (presumably when he has to report to whoever holds the other end of his leash), and Charlie's first kill, if that ever happens.
I've really enjoyed the Hazbin videos. I've been looking forward to each part and I'm legitimately sad that they're done for now. These were exactly the style of reaction vids I vibe with. Hearing people just go off on tangents and give their thoughts on a piece of media in detail even if (or especially when?) it's a bit "incoherent" or "rambling", is just so interesting to me. Almost feels like listening in a conversation, and you brought up so many points I also noticed - and things I hadn't considered, which is the most valuable thing to me when watching other people's opinions/thoughts on media.
I'm also definitely one of the people this show "was made for". I'm turning 30 next month but I was "that kid" on tumblr in the mid-2010s and I saw so much of the spirit of that era in the show, yet it also spoke to me as the adult who grew up to love overanalysing media. So, the show felt both nostalgic and intriguing to me on multiple levels.
For selfish reasons, I do hope you're also going to tackle Helluva Boss (because I like it, and I am really interested in your takes on that show), but I understand if you want to pursue other avenues.
I don't know whether I'm making myself unpopular but I really doubt more episodes would have saved this series. Helluva boss has the time to properly set up plots and take its time with its characters and the writing is just as all over the place as Hazbin Hotel. I think it's Viv's style of writing which either you like or you don't.
Yeah, admittedly both Hazbin and Helluva rely a lot on external information/fandom involvement to truly flesh out the concepts. watching either show on its own feels like missed potential in one way or another. But it does encourage a LOT of fandom activity and creativity from fans, so it's an interesting tradeoff that you can love or hate
Helluva Boss is probably the obviously next step in the is universe of content, but I would be super invested in your ramblings towards another indie product called Murder Drones.
Especially since the 7th episode is due out on the 29th and the 8th episode, the last of the season, would be released soon after
Hell of a boss!! The pilot is a little on the cheap but the animations and fight scenes really take off. Has plenty of musical numbers but not as much as Hazbin. Overlapping voice cast including Broadway stars. Still made by vizziepop but with other writers including a certain old-school type manic UA-cam star..

It has an unconventional aesthetic that turns most anime watchers away at a glance, but manages to have some of the best animation and story you'll see in that sphere.
I love Pentious' death scene, to me it managed to hit both a fantastic comic moment while still being sad and a strong moment for his character. They really did manage to have their cake and eat it too and I respect them for going for that.
The fact that Vaggie still pretty much lost the fight to Lute disappointed me, should have been a trouncing in my opinion.
Overall I'm very happy Skyen liked it, I really liked it too and I hope for a long season 2 which is able to really explore the world.
If you're after 'sort of like hazbin hotel' and with a smaller scale story, that is pretty much Helluva Boss. It takes a while to get going though, its pilot didn't impress me.

For a lot of the people in the Discord chat this episode, they didn't seem to like the Vaggie fight not because it wasn't a good payoff for her training last episode, but because she was harmed by something other than an angelic weapon, which in response:
Both angels and demons are the exact same in how they exist. They can be harmed in mundane ways, even killed, but will eventually come back. Their soul will remain and reform. But angelic weapons (which i have no idea what they're made of, only watched the show so far) destroy the soul as well.
Lute lost her arm (from what we see, it might just be temporary) from ripping it off but every single demon we've seen have had similar things happen to them with little consequence as well.
Cute background detail: in the scene with Alastor and Nifty on the balcony, you can see Sir Pentious telling Charlie about his crush on Cherrie, and then when he's about to confess to Cherrie before the battle you can see Charlie gushing with little hearts in the background and Vaggie pushes her away lol
I really want to like this show, because I adore these characters as concepts. But have to admit, that I had a lot of trouble watching the show the way it was executed. Many moments couldn’t make me feel something, because it was so just too fast. These long in depth analysis videos help me understand and appreciate the show much more.

I have no idea what sort of person Vivzie is, but I've seen enough online hate-mobs over the years to have a reasonable grasp on the sort of person who joins them, and why they do it.
1- If Alistor is getting his powers from Lilith , when he sings in the Final song "find a way to unclip my WINGS" - it could also be a hint about getting is powers from a person in heaven? not a lot of Sinners having wings.
2- Dont know where i saw it but Vivziepop had 22 episodes planned for season 1 but it was cut down by amazon and it might take 2 years for season 2.

I am 42 and Hazbin Hotel conmected to me. I loved Batman:TAS, Gargoyles, and the animated Spawn series. I stayed up way too late to watch The Maxx and AeonFlux. I literally jumped for joy when Deadpool came out, because he was my second favourite comic book character for many years. I also watched every Disney movie that I could, and the first theatrical release of The Little Mermaid was the first movie I remember going to the theatre for.
A lot of early internet culture is second or third hand, but Tumblr was a hyper fixation for a couple years. I caught up on the first 8 seasons of Supernatural in about a month, and really only recommend the first 5.
I feel like this show is for chronically online oddlings like me with a dark sense of humour who aren't necessarily edgelords.

I've been seeing a lot of talking in pairs, discussing Hazbin's and Helluva Boss' writing problems at the same time, like they are on the same level.
Idk Helluva Boss has way worse writing than Hazbin in my opinion and, while some of the problems are similiarly rooted, Helluva has also a lot of issues that Hazbin just doesn't really have. I loved Hazbin on a particularly emotional level despite very strongly noticing the writing problems with it, especially the pacing; despite that it just struck something and I keep singing the songs in my head and fangirling all over the characters. I've had a similiar relationship with the Kingdom Hearts series that, for those who knows, has MASSIVE and incredibily naive and surprising problems in its writings that you wonder if an adult person actually wrote it: but I couldn't help falling in love with the characters, what I got, what I saw they were trying to say with them, and just feeling the vibe and atmosphere of the world in such a instantly nostalgic way, the moment I finished the series. Hazbin has been similiar.
I didn't personally get this with Helluva Boss, at all. And I think there is a reason for it.

You described my feelings towards Hazbin perfectly at the end, there - this show would have been my entire life if I saw it when I was 16.
Now that I'm 26, go to therapy and have a DnD campaign to fill out the character angst quota in my life, it doesn't hit nearly as hard and I find it difficult to look past the rough edges and the pacing issues. But it is interesting and I do feel like I still "get it" and what it's going for in a way. ☺️
The Vees' part of the final song slaps, but it also cracks me up every time. What "power vacuum" are you talking about, babes?😂 We don't see any Overlords die! Even Alastor only disappears for like for five minutes! Carmilla was so right when she called them "smug wannabes," can't wait to see them get completely fucked next season

I will say that I think its approach is distinctly different to Hazbin Hotel though. In my perception HB sort of lacks an overarching plot and focuses squarely on the development and exploration of the characters and their relationships to and interactions with one another; Which I love but I can see how that would be less appealing to others. Helluva is also a lot less of a musical a lot of the time, though it still has at least one-ish song per episode.
Also a fair "warning" about HB: the show does take a hot second to really find its footing. Season 1 is very much about the production team figuring out what exactly they want to do and how they want to do it. I like the place it ends up in but it does take a few episodes to get there.
Am also curious if you would start by watching the first episode or the pilot. Because honestly, I would recommend starting with the first official episode right away. The pilot is officially not canon anymore and thus has also been removed from the playlist for the show. Of course you could absolutely still watch it first to contrast it with the actual show but I feel like things do change quite a bit between the two and the first ep just seems like a better introduction to me.
But I'm sure whatever Skyen ends up doing will work out fine!

Part of the "undertone" of Sir Pentious's death scene is "It doesn't matter how brave you are, if you are going up against a lion". Adam is shown in this how powerful he is, against Alastor, and his over all powers. Sir Pentious didnt have a chance.
Also, fun little seed of thought, note how Alastor points out "you should know better than anyone what a soul can accomplish when they take charge of their own fate." It is rather telling if you scope out over the whole story line, and look at all the questions we are asking from "the big picture".
Another lovely UA-camr does a talk about Lute, and refers to them as "the Zealot" to the "cult of Adam" mentality.
I am also curious on the thoughts in Sera, when Sir Pentious shows up. Its shock but is it "oh god, one got in? EWW" shock or more of a "oh god they CAN get in, what have I done?"

I'm pretty sure this has been commented before but just to add onto the pile, I really like a particular reading of Alastor's fight against Adam, where he's technically correct, he had everything he needed to win against Adam, EXCEPT what Carmilla told Vaggie, right now Alastor is in for his own self interest, he survived and escaped, but if he had something to protect, and actually "fought for love", he would have won
One thing I noticed while watching hazbin hotel was sir pen actions , in the club he bought everyone drinks , saves nifty in episode 5 , he gets the courage to fight with his friends , finds love an makes a selfless sacrifice to protect the woman he loves .

One of the reasons why you watching helluvaboss would be super interesting is that i would love to see you react to the same creators working under different circumstances aka the animation getting better over time, the story slowly finding its footing, the creators having the amount of episodes they want and no fear of getting cancelled etc. Like this story will be told in the time it needs (aka 4 seasons) even if it takes 20 years. 😅.

Not much else to add, except I've just realized (after this being my third rewatch): when Alastor makes the deal with Charlie, there's all this green magic binding him, especially around the mouth... And then you stopped on the frame of Lute's mask and she has a preeeeettyyyy similar smile there on her mask...
My guess: Either first Sera wanted a "solution" to "the sinners problem", so she gets Adam because Adam wants power and so Adam goes to Lilith for that power, OR Adam goes to Lilith (or maybe Lilith manipulates Adam and offers him the power he craves) and then Adam goes to Sera and proposes her to build the Exorcists army. In that aspect, the masks are there because they're Lilith's symbol and she's the one powering them. And you take the hint once Alastor shows his bindings 🤔
On the topic of new things to watch, recently i watched centaur world and it's so good for it's on good i cried for 10 minutes straight in the finale. It tells the story of a horse and its rider in a world that's plagued with war and get separated after a fight and the horse ends up in this fantasy world where EVERYTHING is a centaur. It's on netflix, it's already finished and it seems like everyone is sleeping on it so hard because of the goofy style but it's just such a good animation in general i super recommend it.

You ask for recommendations for similar shows? Helluva Boss. I will say this about the sister show to Hazbin Hotel: The females are definitely the forefront of Hazbin Hotel, while it's definitely the males in Helluva Boss. Hazbin focuses on the Sinners while Helluva Boss focuses on the hellborn.
They're both good and I'm looking forward to your assessments of the show, and your comparisons between the two.
