Ms Shiffrin overthinks what really factors a single win, let alone winning at all. Winning starts unilaterally in the locker room leading players ultimately to the next point as Rod Laver argued: The next point-that's all one must think about.. In the sport of women tennis with so many different styles and strengths there is a creeping neurotic self-awareness in the air which players mistake for energizing confidence. The first thing that goes during a match is to think you can control your opponent. That's how people get hurt: swinging for an evasive control as opposed to focusing on their own ball's trajectory. The former will make you vulnerable, even in the lead. Laver also reasoned that: The time your game is most vulnerable is when you are ahead. Focusing on the next point overrides any informed presumption on the opponent' and the game you or someone else planned for you. Every ball is a matchball, every match is a final. if players don't have the physical conditioning and the mental fortitude to run after every ball to save their lives, like Nadal does, never letting up, they lost not in the locker room but when they left the hotel room on their way to the court.
