  • I spent nearly an entire day at UP's Bakersfield yard shooting UP and San Joaquin Valley RR making and breaking trains then moving out on their designated journeys.
    So, join me for a day in the yard with UP and SJVRR

    Switching is where it’s at on the Railroad for Small & Large Customers. The railroad couldn’t function without. Dangerous work any time you’re on the Ground. 👍🙏

    Mark I have been working with a guy that knows you. He is from Tehachapi, so i asked him if he knew you. And low and behold he does. His name is Jim Mcqueen. He just retired on friday.

      No Way! I was just thinking about Jim the other day, wondering what ever happened to him! We hung out for years. I'm glad to hear he is still around and really happy he retired. Please give him my e-mail. I'd love to say hi to him. Thanks for letting me know!

    Great Job. Enjoyed the video. I railfan Roseville several times a week and usually catch the MRVBK as it leaves the yard for Bakersfield. Great to see where it ends up. Thanks for the tour.

    Switching is an essential task of processing the revenue-generating traffic that is the economic "bread and butter" of a railway, as well as the non-revenue-generating empties. As such, it is a major and very significant cost factor in railway operation of manifest traffic, i.e. non-unitized trains. 2024/01/11. Ontario, Canada.

    Those 2 UP engines 1061 and 1527 have been rebuilt by UP in their Jenks shop. 1061 is a pretty standard rebuilt SD60E made famous by Norfolk Southern. 1527 is an SD40N which the N suffix does not return in my searches. Probably a UP custom.

      You might want to double check again sir those locomotives were GPs they both had two axle trucks not SDs with three axel trucks so my guess is 1061 is a GP-60 & 1527 a GP-40

      @@remylopez4821 You are correct, I misread the UP roster. I guess I had SD on my mind. They have been rebuilt in UP Jenks shop and are GP60E and GP40N.

    Mark, U P don't let the crews kick cars no more in Bakersfield? A truly lost art in railroading.

      I'm not that conversant with operating policies, and it's not covered in the Special System Instructions as that only refers to changes in rules and not the rule itself, and I do not have access to a rulebook. Thanks for checking it out

    You don't see locomotives (video footage at 13:40) get tagged very often!

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  Рік тому

      Not road locomotives because they rarely sit anywhere long enough to be tagged, but it's actually pretty common with the switchers, at least around the valley. Thanks for checking it out!

      Formosa was the name a short lived republic on Taiwan 1895. It is also a city in Argentina. Famoso is a very small community 20 miles north of Bakersfield on highway 99 with a switching facility that serves the Western Milling facility there. There is also a siding there of the same name. The Famoso Drag Strip, located five miles east of the freeway, was the home of the famous Bakersfield Fuel and Gas Championships (a.k.a the March Meet) until 1985, and now hosts the annual Hot Rod Reunion, which features a week of vintage drag racing and show cars.
      Here is a video I made awhile back following the Famoso Local around for a day!
