The first F1 race i attended was the 1971 International Trophy at Silverstone, the last F1 race that Graham won in a F1 car. i was a dedicated hill fan from that time on. i will never forget the fateful night he crashed. i had just got in from a night out with my mates in a Cheltenham nightclub. i turned the radio on and the news came on stating that a light aircraft had crashed on Elstree Golf course believed to belong to Graham Hill, i was absolutely devastated. needless to say i became a fan of Damons and was delighted when he won The British Grand Prix at Silverstone, a feat his father never managed in his career, and then went on to win the World Championship.

To this day I find it hard to believe that a man as brave and brilliant as Graham could die in a ridiculously needless way like that. It was so tragic for him, those with him and their families. He was only 46, yet he seemed to have been around forever. I remember that horrible Saturday night so well.
NOBODY has emulated his Triple Crown, and I reckon nobody ever will, and nobody since has come close to his combination of staggering achievement, immense physical courage and wonderfully hilarious humour. Not even close.

@@MotorHomeBeepBeep Hi, thanks for the reply.
That's part of my disbelief I think, that a man who drove in 176 GPs when GP racing was at its most lethal, with only two really bad crashes neither of which was his fault (Spain and US in 1969) and innumerable other races, including a sensationally brilliant drive at night in the rain which won Le Mans in 1972 - a man who was so brilliant and meticulous in his approach to danger - could be killed in a ridiculous and so avoidable accident like that.
I wonder, if he'd lived, whether the Saudi money which went to Williams would have gone to him instead, resulting in his team being world champions... Just writing this now makes me feel so sad.

But regarding the plane crash, I don't know the details, but it seemed extremely sad that everybody died all six of them. As is often the case I sometimes read more detail about the person after the film because It's sparked my interest. I'm going to look into the crash details when I've got time. I admired him that was my overall feeling from my research.

@@MotorHomeBeepBeep Thank you! Graham for unknowable reasons chose to land at Elstree, his 'usual' airport, on a very foggy night instead of diverting to Luton which was fully lit and had experts present to give radio help to him. He hit the tops of trees coming in and crashed on a golf course killing all six aboard.
He appears to have thought he was higher than he actually was, there's a theory that he failed to set the plane's 'altimeter' properly before leaving France - I can't explain exactly what that means though I'm afraid!
Damon Hill's autobiography Watching the Wheels is brilliant, he goes into his relationship with his father, and Graham's death, in a riveting way. He says that Graham had sent a message for the Elstree airport's landing lights to be put on for him but somehow, and catastrophically, they hadn't been, and he may have mistaken lights in a railway station for the runway, hence his descent two or so miles too early. There are biographies too - Mr Monaco is great, and his widow Bette Hill's 'The Other Side Of The Hill' is fascinating, though hard to find I think, though it's very likely to be on ebay.
Do read Damon's book though, it's so much better that a run of the mill sports book!

Thanks for your caring knowledgeable tribute. Graham Hill was a childhood hero of mine, (second to Jim Clark it's true). Graham Hill comes across so well in any film clip I've seen of him. I would have thought he'd have a more flamboyant grave. With somehow a shock of hair on it maybe to flip and slick back, and a witty smile. It's also good though he has a quite personable and quite English grave. Rather close to a roadway, but, well he was a Driver. I like your accent: What part of Britain is your accent from? I want to say Yorkshire, but that's only because distinctive accents come from there.

Hello Carl it was next to a very busy road so I wasn't so keen on the spot. But like you say it was a driver. I watched a couple of documentaries. He was very courageous and that's what gave him the ability to overskill he wasn't the most skillful. Very stylish men. In actual fact the grave is in what is now a private house it was bought so I had to ask permission but they were fantastic, very friendly and took me to it The church have been converted a few decades ago. Regarding the grave, the public can't go in. really it's private land now but the people were phenomenally nice. I'm sure anybody who asked to would let them. Regarding the family, I don't know but I would assume there will be some right of way. The church has made a wonderful house. They've lived there for about 20 years. Great to see you again Alan, we haven't half missed you & your vids my friend & Graham Hill was my favourite driver.
But I must admit for the first time I was rather saddened at the fairly rough condition of the plot & stone, I wonder if Graham had any sort of organised following, fan club, appreciation society etc, as they could maybe tidy it up a little being as he was so well known & still well remembered, with the families permission of course.
Just a quick little story, when I was a child in the 60s we had a local fishing tackle shop in town ran by a Mr Hilton, who to me just happened to be Graham Hills double, right down to the slicked back hair & Errol Flynn tash, dad always told me he actually was Graham Hill, I believed him for years, Lol!
