Happy for you! I did exactly the same last year, I'm a mechanical engineering student and last year I was done with 3 out of 5 years, basically my bachelor. I back then decided to take a gap-year to do things I've always wanted to do such as enlisting in the army but also to think more about what courses I want to take in the future. Now one year later, here I am, more mature and motivated than ever to finish my last 2 years and I've also found out what masters degree I shall take. It's a wise choice in other words! My reasons were pretty much the same as yours. Have a wonderful year mate
John, this has really encouraged me as I am currently taking a gap year, and I wondered if it was the right choice since I felt pressure to keep up with friends. Your maturity and excitement to grow as a person while taking a break has inspired me to really make the most of this time off, and to learn more about myself. Thanks for all your effort in making and sharing videos!
I think the same thing happened to me when I was in college last year. My senior year, I started to realize that accounting wasn't for me and I started getting into web development / computer programming. Unlike you though, I was stupid and only realized all this three months prior into getting my BS in accounting lol. I still got my degree but my only wish was that I had more time to think about what I wanted to do with my life like you did. With that being said, I wish you the best of luck in all of your endeavors John!
When you asked people to guess your announcement on IG I was jokingly like "dropping out of Harvard" but turned out to be halfway right haha. Anyway as a fellow college student constantly undergoing life crises, your perspective is very inspiring. Wishing you the best of luck during your break!
John! Can’t believe you are coming to Montreal, my hometown. I am sure that you’ll love the city. I’m am so proud of everything you’ve done. As a 20 year old student, all of your videos inspire me so much, thank you. Can’t wait to see what idea you come with and maybe...see you soon in the streets of Mtl. À bientôt 👋
Your 19 and graduating am 24 and in the exact same position as you right now. No need to rush i think it all boils down to society pressure that we humans created for our self we delete that and will be happy
Hey John, just after watching a few minutes of the video I felt I had to pass on this wisdom (my personal experience) to you!!😁 so I just finished my first year of computer science at university in London (being from London it was the most viable option) and gradually throughout the year I discovered that there was so much more that I wanted to do- I have a background in chemistry, biology, geography and physics having studied it at A-LEVEL (exams you take to get into uni in the UK) so I had a keen interest in academic science before choosing compsci. As I already had this pre exposure I was really missing the more academic subjects as opposed to the vocational study of compsci, and as with UK Unis you usually have to focus solely on that one subject you chose for the degree. Anyway now on summer break I re-applied to start again as a freshman at a different uni to study Physical Geography. So, the whole point of this message was to say I completely think,if you have interests that lie in something you find interesting/inspiring etc FOLLOWWW ITTTTTT
I do reflections almost every day. I think about my purpose, my intention, my interest, my behaviors, and my life. I do make changes to improve myself. I have gained so much precious thoughts from these resources. But I am so amazed by the decision you’ve made. I have never thought about taking a big leap like you do. It’s exciting to change and know that I am going to be the ungraded version of me. But I think that the idea of “everything and every change is possible” haven’t completely been accepted by myself. After watching this video, I also feel so excited to make a long term plan! And Good luck John, you’re going to gain a lot from this journey!! Look forward to your new projects!
It’s honestly so refreshing to see a youtuber that’s a genuinely nice person. Additionally, the fact that you do not clickbait is amazing. Thank you for bringing positivity and other forms of good into this world :) may God bless you🙏❤️.
When someone that cares so much for worldly ambitions such as study hard go to a good school make money finally realizes it isn’t going to make you happy and those can be other people’s goals not your own the addiction of self improvement can lead to discontentment and later depression
Wow John a lot of your points rang a very similar tune to me! I also took a break year after my second year of college when I was 19. I decided to work though, and I'm now 20 and about to return to college. I wish you all the luck there is, but it sounds like you won't need it
I really like your attitude about being open minded and trying new things. I have the tendency to view mistakes as a bad thing. Thank you so much for changing my perspective on life.
this video came at the PERFECT time. i’m about to go to university and i relate to the feeling of “the rush.” first it was rushing to go to graduate and go to college, and now that college is starting soon i want to rush and graduate from there so i can do what i want. but watching this has enforced the importance of pacing and taking breaks, and enjoying the moment and having patience. great content as always, john! i’m excited to see what you do in the future. :)
Omg i just graduated from McGill this year and moved to Toronto for work! It was so great a feeling when you said McGill is your second pick, so close to be alumni! I’m also taking a gap year to do more personal interests development before I head to a master degree. Can’t wait to see posts and videos of you in that beautiful city:) and I get that feeling when you are in a new city without a community to join. Keep posting your brilliant idea and projects you work on, local like-minded people will find you and you’ll make new friends! And we are always here to support! Congrats and best wishes for your next journey ❤️
I wanted to thank you for talking about taking the time to figure out what you want in life. I am going to be a junior in high school in the fall. I decided last year to redo my sophomore year and switch schools (from a public high school to a private boarding school). This was really hard for me to come to the term with the fact that it will be taking me 5 years to graduate high school, but I think the extra time will really help me to figure who I am and what I want to do with my life. You talking about how you are doing something similar really makes me feel better about my decision. You are such an inspiration and good luck with Montreal!
From experience (not mine but from a lot of people i know): For a year = Forever EDIT: It's mostly because in that year you will realize that you don't actually need college at all, and possibly even find a job in that time.
In my experience it's quite the opposite. More than half the people I know that went to uni did some sort of gap year or took a break. We're all old enough to know you don't need uni for A job but we also know that we need uni for the type of job we want. So yeah, I think a gap year is a great idea! It won't stop anyone that really wants to go to uni and for those that don't, well, it'll save them the time and money :)
John, what a great decision!. I'm currently involved in a psychology major and I was doing a double program with "Systems Engineering" or what in your country is called Computer Science. I thought that I was crazy by doing that but you taught me that I was not crazy at all. Currently, I dropped out of CS for my family, economic and personal problems, but I'm happy whatsoever. You're such an inspiration and I hope that you get your answer in this year that you're taking, who knows, maybe you find a connection between Neuropsychology (Ps. Brenda Miller "the founder of Neuropsychology" is in McGill university, maybe you can talk to her). Saludos desde Colombia!
Hi! I’ve been watching your channel for a while now, and as a high school junior myself you’ve been a refreshing addition to my UA-cam subscriptions, not to mention extremely motivating and inspiring. Big props to you for making a decision like this for your self growth, and wishing you the very best for the year! Thanks for giving us quality content and helping us figure out highschool and life simultaneously.
Keep up the good work John. I have been watching your videos for a long time now and you have been inspiring me from a young age. I would like to say thank you for that.
John, you have my upmost respect. The courage you have to do this for the pursuit of not just academic, but also self growth, has truly amplified my admiration of you. Because of you I have started to learn coding ; inevitably it is only the basic languages at this stage, but the knowledge compounds. I have also started my own channel, in part, because of you ! I wish you the very best. What a great role model you are John ! Thanks for enhancing the productivity within my life.
Also, thanks for being such an inspiration. Seeing how you have progressed through the years (I've been here since ~70k subs, right before the CS video) is really inspiring and has helped me map out what I want to do in life with Academics and Computer Science. With that, seeing a local figure like you (I go to St. Mary's) only helps me connect more! Thanks a lot and keep up the great work!
I'm new to your channel, but I'm so glad I ended up here in this moment of my life. I'm also 19, but I am a chemical engineering major in a small town in Brazil and rn, my life has been my degree. I long to get out of my hometown and see the world, but I'm scared I won't be good enough, so I work all day everyday thinking about this goal and it's ok, for the most part, I find my studies fullfilling and I think I'm mostly happy. But recently I started to realise that I'm living a life of fear and a bit of solitude, so seeing you, someone who has so much of the stuff I wish for, allowing yourself to live boldly and to follow your personal desires gives me hope that I will find the courage to the same as well, one day. So yeah, this is my very rambly thank you.
Hey John, i live in Montreal and was wondering if you consider organizing a fan meet up or just a hang out with fans at one point (i think they are pretty much the same thing xD). I think it would be a great time and would love meeting you!!
Right now I´m at my last semester of Law School and just discovered your channel. You are an example of a really wise person and I´m looking foward to become someone like you in that matter. Thank you very much.
I just opted in for a six month interruption of my PhD studies. The decision wasn't entirely voluntarily, as there were a lot of factors weighing in the decision academic-wise and mental health-wise, but after watching this video I feel a lot more confident about this.
John, Im a big fan form germany, I want that you know that I miss your website and the Articles of it. Give it any new source were are you updating us? And can you upload your growth book on Amazon.de? You have a new book list or can me recommend any books for self-help etc?
A degree means nothing unless you develop well physically, mentally and emotionally as a person. This sounds like a good move John. As a life coach, I try to convince people of this fact and I’m often met with resistance. Wishing you the best... you’re a smart guy. I’m sure you’re going to do just fine.
It’s great your parents support you so much. I don’t think i would ever push through delaying when i was in university; i think they may not take it. Also, ive thought about becoming an original if only i took my time off. Time is gold that’swhat i cling onto
Did this to work down at Disney for a semester; this is definitely a good move on your part. Keep grinding, I’m glad to hear you’re doing what you need to do in order to get to where you want to be.
I resonate with everything you shared. I'm planning on taking a gap year just to learn more about myself and the world we are in. Testing my own limits and such. I do believe that school has shaped me in some way. Having done community work and being engaged, I learn that there's so much to learn outside of class. What's being discussed in class is limited in terms of knowing the actual reality of the field. I am actually from Montreal. If you have any questions or anything related to the city, I'll be glad to help. So happy to hear you're coming to Montreal. You'll love it here! This is going to be an exciting journey!
I just have to say that this video has helped me so much. I’m currently in the same process of questioning my freedom, independence and what I truly wish to do with my life. College is such a time consuming thing that doesn’t always leave time for you to grow and explore. I applaud you for taking this leap that not many people can and wish you the best in your adventures. :)
The way I see it I have a few routes which would be fun to go down. One obvious one is to throw myself into a tech startup. Another is to go further in schooling, maybe get a PhD and then go into academia! I might even do both, or something completely different--like becoming a documentary filmmaker. Whatever makes the most sense at graduation is what I'll do!
Congrats to you on how much you’ve developed through college. I don’t watch your videos very often but when I do, I usually become pretty inspired. I hope that you keep on growing and sharing your journey.
I envy you man. I went the military route, married my beautiful wife, and had a beautiful daughter. I regret none of that but I struggle every day just to make good grades, balance working full time to support my family and providing my wife and daughter with enough family time. I am really happy that you're taking some extra time off to decide exactly where you would like to steer the ship that is your life. Enjoy your time man and I wish the best for you.
Thank you for this video! I can relate to this feeling of rush, having just graduated from university. Even when you have a clear goal and you're working (or "rushing") towards it step-by-step - your video is a great reminder to pause and be patient.
John... You have a lot of courage.. I have also thought about this, but I don't have the courage.. May God bless in your ventures.. I am really waiting for your next video
I actually like your voice. You help me calm down. The reason I said this is that I just had a argument with my dad and I was so angry, then I go back to my room, wearing earphones and started to watch your video. Thank you so much for the good content❤️
John, I really admire you. You just work on yourself and it helps many people. Your videos inspired me a lot to push myself to become a better person in the past. Bur when I was watching these videos, I never really thought I could ever get into Harvard. Few days ago, I found out I was accepted to Harvard! It’s crazy for me and I can’t wait to go to the campus. But for the time being, maybe I need to step back and contemplate on some things about myself too. I hope I’ll be able to talk to you when this fall!

you're so fresh, John. this might sound like a love sick thing to say--maybe it is, but you're such a calm breath of fresh air. maybe the word 'inspire' is thrown around carelessly but i can't find any other word that'd justify just how inspiration you are. you're a legend, John. you break those stereotypes. you're real. thanks for that. it's rare to find somebody so real in a virtual space.
I'm excited for you! Best thing I ever did was work in a psychology lab.. taught me so much about research and have transitioned into a research job in another field. You'll love it.
I'm honestly happy for you John. I've been following you for a while now and I can clearly see how much you've grown (as a student, individual and creator). You are truly someone I look up to and an inspiration. Looking forward to future projects of yours. Good luck with this 'gap year'. 😄

You are so different man . I like your courage to do whatever decision so freely. I really admire that.
Go Fish.. you're destined for greatness bro..keep it up..
Got any 7s?
TheManChise or addiction...
I guess no "A day in the life of Harvard student" videos anymore...
Fun apart, I totally agree with your point of view
À bientôt 👋
1 year later: Goes back to Harvard with a Ferrari
I live in Montreal too! Can't wait to see what you film in this beautiful city ❤️
I wish you all the luck there is, but it sounds like you won't need it
Good luck man, go for It!
No one is gonna talk about how cute this guy is? Boyyyy im in love now, you deserve the best 🤩
Edit: i forgot to put an emoji
I wanted to thank you for talking about taking the time to figure out what you want in life. I am going to be a junior in high school in the fall. I decided last year to redo my sophomore year and switch schools (from a public high school to a private boarding school). This was really hard for me to come to the term with the fact that it will be taking me 5 years to graduate high school, but I think the extra time will really help me to figure who I am and what I want to do with my life. You talking about how you are doing something similar really makes me feel better about my decision. You are such an inspiration and good luck with Montreal!
From experience (not mine but from a lot of people i know): For a year = Forever
EDIT: It's mostly because in that year you will realize that you don't actually need college at all, and possibly even find a job in that time.
Great guy! You really inspire me. Love from Nigeria
John your videos are really good and motivating. Keep it up!!!
Keep up the good work John. I have been watching your videos for a long time now and you have been inspiring me from a young age. I would like to say thank you for that.
Facebook 2 coming this spring
John, you have my upmost respect. The courage you have to do this for the pursuit of not just academic, but also self growth, has truly amplified my admiration of you.
Because of you I have started to learn coding ; inevitably it is only the basic languages at this stage, but the knowledge compounds. I have also started my own channel, in part, because of you !
I wish you the very best. What a great role model you are John ! Thanks for enhancing the productivity within my life.
I'm 19 (soon to be 20) 😅 and this was a serious kick in the face. (In a good way)
Also, thanks for being such an inspiration.
Hope Montreal treats you well!
Tbh, i always watch your videos to get new advices from you for life 😤❤️
I'm new to your channel, but I'm so glad I ended up here in this moment of my life.
With your logic and thought process you could think your way into any job. Hope you find what you are looking for!
President of the world. Jk, I appreciate the kind words a lot Daniel!
You’re really wise!I hope someday I’ll be as wise as u are.Good luck✨
Right now I´m at my last semester of Law School and just discovered your channel. You are an example of a really wise person and I´m looking foward to become someone like you in that matter. Thank you very much.
This guy makes me feel so stupid.. love it
It was a joke bozo
I just opted in for a six month interruption of my PhD studies. The decision wasn't entirely voluntarily, as there were a lot of factors weighing in the decision academic-wise and mental health-wise, but after watching this video I feel a lot more confident about this.
John, Im a big fan form germany,
I want that you know that I miss your website and the Articles of it.
Give it any new source were are you updating us?
And can you upload your growth book on Amazon.de?
You have a new book list or can me recommend any books for self-help etc?
1:43 - 2:30
Com sci, film, psych, whatever you choose I will keep following you b/c you have the drive. Good luck! Mr. Fish.
yeah! going to study in Canada this fall, probably have a trip to Montreal 😊
A degree means nothing unless you develop well physically, mentally and emotionally as a person. This sounds like a good move John. As a life coach, I try to convince people of this fact and I’m often met with resistance. Wishing you the best... you’re a smart guy. I’m sure you’re going to do just fine.
How did you manage to almost graduate in just 2 years?
He didn't, he has 2 more years left.
@@IbangedYaMama he said he needs only 4 more classes
@@gangatalishis For computer science. He said he need 16 more credits to get his degree.
@@blazereho811 He has 16 credits left to complete, 4 in computer science and 12 in other things. Rewatch again. No one completes college in 2 years.
@@IbangedYaMama wait why does he need 12 credits in "other things"
It’s great your parents support you so much. I don’t think i would ever push through delaying when i was in university; i think they may not take it. Also, ive thought about becoming an original if only i took my time off. Time is gold that’swhat i cling onto
John: leaves Harvard
Next Year: Goes to Mars
Did this to work down at Disney for a semester; this is definitely a good move on your part. Keep grinding, I’m glad to hear you’re doing what you need to do in order to get to where you want to be.
Favourite creator on yt! Love from India, John!
Thanks so much Vy! Best of luck on your own journey!
"life is harsh but we all in this storm" thanks for the good content
I just have to say that this video has helped me so much. I’m currently in the same process of questioning my freedom, independence and what I truly wish to do with my life. College is such a time consuming thing that doesn’t always leave time for you to grow and explore. I applaud you for taking this leap that not many people can and wish you the best in your adventures. :)
I wanted to ask you what you wanted to do when you graduate from Harvard you one of my favorite UA-camrs
Cool
Congrats to you on how much you’ve developed through college. I don’t watch your videos very often but when I do, I usually become pretty inspired. I hope that you keep on growing and sharing your journey.
Nope John Fish is definitely getting kicked out.
I've been thinking about doing that but I only have a semester left before I graduate
I don’t like being sappy but his smile and gesture at 12:41 and the energy it brings is so unbelievable.
John, you need a lifebook.
I actually like your voice. You help me calm down. The reason I said this is that I just had a argument with my dad and I was so angry, then I go back to my room, wearing earphones and started to watch your video. Thank you so much for the good content❤️
I wish i lived in Montreal to be your friend hahah. Greetings from Mexico your videos give me a lot of motivation!
Yo John! What programming projects are u currently working on?
Hey John Fish! If you are working on something let's connect on gitHub! Would definitely be willing to look at your code or collaborate (if needed/interested). GitHub handle is: vanesa-fleurs ------> github.com/vanesa-fleurs 😊
Vanesa Fleurs Sus, all I see is stolen code...
you're so fresh, John. this might sound like a love sick thing to say--maybe it is, but you're such a calm breath of fresh air. maybe the word 'inspire' is thrown around carelessly but i can't find any other word that'd justify just how inspiration you are. you're a legend, John. you break those stereotypes. you're real. thanks for that. it's rare to find somebody so real in a virtual space.
Saving the rap game in just 1 year?? Pretty ambitious but ok
What is to save a rap game?
I'm excited for you! Best thing I ever did was work in a psychology lab.. taught me so much about research and have transitioned into a research job in another field. You'll love it.
Me: Who is the best Harvard dropout?
John Fish: *exists*
Me: ワオ
I'm honestly happy for you John. I've been following you for a while now and I can clearly see how much you've grown (as a student, individual and creator). You are truly someone I look up to and an inspiration. Looking forward to future projects of yours. Good luck with this 'gap year'. 😄

Me: YOU’RE WHAAAAAAaat?!
Edit: me watches video and understands the deeper meaning of intellectuality-
I really love that you spread good vibes through your videos. When I watch you videos, somehow I get inspiration and my mood gets better 😁
