  • The UCL Institute of Healthy Ageing (IHA) is a centre of excellence for research on the biology of ageing and ageing-related diseases.
The process of ageing (senescence) is now the predominant cause of illness and disease worldwide, and yet it remains poorly understood. The aim of research at the IHA is to discover the biological mechanisms of ageing as a means to understand the etiologies (causes) of the many diseases of ageing.
Because human ageing is so very complex, the main approach of research at the IHA is to discover the mechanisms of ageing first in simple, experimentally tractable organisms, to attain an understanding of the general principles of ageing that can then be applied to human ageing.
Understanding the biology of ageing is one of the most important challenges in biomedical research today.
