Sam Rockwell chooses roles based on his passion for the character. He is not in it for the money, that's just a bonus. That and his incredibly unique personality, borderline insanity, is what makes Sam Rockwell so great and yet so under the radar.
I know I'm late to the party with this video but your comment is absolutely Sam Rockwell in a nutshell. He's amazing and it's a shame that he's so underrated. He's fantastic and I don't think there's anything he can't do - sing, dance, etc (I've yet to see him sing but it seems completely possible.).
I love Sam Rockwell, I saw him (Sam Rockwell)for the first time 20 years ago in the movie Safecrackers with Georg Clooney and after this movie he was my favorite actor. I like You Sam and wait of more movies
Lawn Dogs, if you haven't seen it, definitely one of his weirdest. I just saw Jojo Rabbit. Rockwell undoubtedly gives the best adult performance of that film. The kids were excellent too.
I've never seen a bad performance from Rockwell. Seven Psychopaths is one of my favorite movies of all time. But man, Green Mile, Three Billboards, Moon, Vice. Just everything he does is fantastic.
I realized just how good and talented actor Sam Rockwell is when I saw "Moon". I have not noticed him before cuz he was so good a character actor that you remembered the character not the actor. A vastly underrated and underestimated talent.
First fell in awe of Sam in Box of Moonlight (with Turturro). Great soundtrack too. Then Safe Men (another early favorite, with fantastic supporting cast & cameos!). Moon was brilliant, heartbreaking. And don't forget his earlier role as Jimmy in The Search for One-eyed Jimmy! So many brilliant performances (big & small) since the early 90s. Agree with comparison to Gary Oldman.
You really needed to include his performance as Francis Flute/Thisbe in the 1999 film, A Midsummer Night's Dream! In less than two minutes, he stole the entire play/movie. Absolutely heartbreaking and unforgettable.
The Seven Psychopaths....brilliant and the moon film....The Way Way Back...He was sublime...Truly a very ambidextrous actor and others pale into insignificance.....i would watch his acting talents Cushti all day long.... And Sam Rockwell....Sam Rocks Very Well (dancing) haste Ye Back Sam As We Say at Hame in beautiful Caledonia!
Man I absolutely love that movie. I watched it again the day after first watching. It's so damn well written, cast, and acted it's criminal that it isn't more revered. Rockwell is absolutely brilliant in it. Such a lunatic. "..At the f**king standoff? The f**king standoff!!!"
I always end up watching whatever he is in even if I'm not intereeted in the movie itself. He's so effortlessly cool he makes anything watchable. I can't even explain why. Only other actor that is as magnetic (maybe even less) is William Holden, maybe. And they are totally different but have that ultra-confident effortless charisma.
He is the Gary Oldman of America. People talk of Daniel Day Lewis also. But I think only Gary Oldman and Sam Rockwell are one of those truely transformative actors, even more so than DDL, even though DDL may beat out the other 2 with skills and charisma. Another one is Joaquin Phoenix, especially in his demented and sardonic roles like Joker and The Master.
God, he's always fantastic, isn't he? I'd recommend "Snow Angels" as another under-the-radar one. It's a decent movie overall, but Rockwell's performance is what makes it really worth watching.
DUDE! I tuned in JUST to see clips from "The Way, Way Back." LOVE the Rockwell, and think that you're right on with your opinions. ... (but why didn't you let any of his scenes play out?)
Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, the green mile, the bad sitter (😂lol), three billboards outside ebbing. And look at my UA-cam profile. Jack of diamonds in Italian.
Moon is absolutely predictable without any twist but yet still a very good movie to watch thanks to amazing Sam's performance. He truly is an underrated actor
Thanks, Blake!! OH MY STAR-LORD!! Get on it ASAP! It's without a doubt one of my top 5 movies of the last decade. Completely blew my mind the first time I watched it. Required viewing!
Ehm Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri? Not even in honorable mentions? He fucking won the academy awards for the, I do agree on number on though, it always my go to if i have to show people amazing performances from actors the cant remember
Yes, the fact that he won the Academy Award for it means it’s far from being one of his “under the radar” performances - which is what this is a video about.
Bro. I've been a Rockwell fan for 30 years. You're overlooking tons. Lawn Dogs is 1 of his best. Box of moonlight. Matchstick men he steals the movie from Cage. Welcome to Collingwood. I met him after his 1st film. he was incredible. about a teen alcoholic who kills a class mate drunk driving. a bit more research is needed pal. LAWN DOGS PEOPLE.
I have always loved Sam Rockwell. I feel like your ordering of all these pics tend toward the banal, which is depressing when you obviously intend adulation of this actor whom I only have mixed feelings for his recent award because he can't just be one of my esoteric secrets ever again, despite also knowing if the awards were expressly about ability, and they are absolutely not, he more than earned his place for his panache at embracing the dangerous weirdo I can't help but recognize as a killer instinct and animal magnetism, charming for his fearless all in hokey pokey now I want to join in. Although I agree with some of your descriptions of him, Confessions... and Matchstick... are head and shoulders above most of his pics for standout reasons, not inarticulate crowd pleasers or completely unnecessary Christmas themed movies where De Niro phones it in, and for what? Because he acted in The Intern, as an overly polished too perfect set up as this devotional widow. Just answer me this, does a feel good movie hold your attention or does the vacuous, perfectly aligned domino trail plotline EVER make you wish for more? If I had to pick a straight role from Rockwell that at least understood the word juxtaposition and the necessity of conflict and touchingly despicable fallability, the only role and pic that conjured any interest in this category was his role as a girls' basketball coach, resuming the roll as a coach I believe, but first from a devil may care failing bus boy, alcoholic and lackustre father who plays against his own daughter's weaknesses. The De Niro movie was worthless. Mr. Right... Yes. He IS eerily charming, although it feels necessary to note that the character is a reprisal of his voice acting role in the animated series on Netflix, F is For Family. He is quite fuckable except for the very GLARINGLY, desperately age inappropriate "relationship" between him and Anna Kendrick. Is it a plausible scenario? Yes, of course. If it can be fucked, someone will try. Is it interesting? NO! Not even slightly. Can a wolf kill a sheep? I wohld sincerely hope so or else that wolf isn't a wolf any longer. Altogether it felt at every moment to be grooming behaviors for a totally intentional, preplanned, statuatory rape. It felt predatious, like a Lolita fantasy pasted into a pic meaning to be an irreverent, dark rom com, but hinestly even the reference at all to Lolita feels too generous. Frankly, despite whatever dynamic I am supposed to believe between them I could not, never able to even once ignore the cacaphonious pairing. Can't an actress who at least appears to be an adult be cast, rather than what is psychologically tantamount to taming, not even a cat, but a kitten! Cast a tiger who I can believe would have at least the ability to resist, as Kendrick was supposedly portraying, and honestly, at some point cause his heart to actually flutter. All zi could read was unsympathetic teenage angst and quite unrealistic tantrums. Give me substance! A real woman, also falliable, but instead with any kind of substance, I beg! Can't the female lead also have any real motivation, or forgive me, but do you expect me to WANT to relieve Amelie in all "love" stories? Have you actually seen Bonnie and Clyde? Did you know IRL she was the one who pushed the violence to the extremes, above and far beyond the instincts leading her beau. But take the cake! Without hyperbole, I was ONLY thoroughly bored with Seven Psychopaths, finding it to b one of the least creative movies I have ever seen, made with the apparent expectation that the cast, including the miracle and fact that Christopher Walken was well and alive to in this case add all the flavor and pizzazz of a potato. The script wasn't anything more than an afterthought having secured the talent. The random and excessive gun violence, with little modulation, couldn't do anything additive in this flim and felt soley more like a sound engineer should take the credit for turning the gunshots from off to on. It was crap! Neverthless, have you even seen Fosse and Verdon yet on Hulu? Wow! If ever another human's life were lived to be written into screenplay for Rockwell, and Rockwell alone, the life he revives of Bob Fosse was tailor fit to him! I could feel the flesh of this character's deeply disturbed version of marriage, fatherhood and how to cast a show by making a sexual buffet of your team. He was fuelled by compulsion and dexidrine, the brilliant artist and the loser unable to find any meaning in relationship, with what looks like Axis II Narcissim, and an extreme case of Attachment disorder he hoped to control with a host of addictions. Michelle Williams is no lightweight in this and rises to the occaison, giving more credit and respect to a real women that was not recognized equally, nevermind her contribution, role and talent. Both suffer, until their daughter too emulated their behavior, poor self-esteem, and addictions, treated very coldly and used between both parents. It's riveting! An uncut gem I will asperse you have yet to see is Rockwell in Jerry and Tom. Made a touch flashier and given adequate marketing this film could have been a dark classic. For what it is and appears to have meant to achieve, it's perfection, including the William H Macy cameo.
Paragraphs are your friends. Regarding Mr. Lucky, Sam Rockwell is 15 years older than Anna Kendrick. Not a big stretch by Hollywood standards. She has a little-girl vibe about her but she was 30 when they made this movie. Her character says that she has a graduate degree so I'd say the character is supposed to be somewhere between 25-30. She's hardly in the Lolita age range. I'd say Sam Rockwell's character is supposed to be about 10 years older and Sam has always looked and played young. I think you are projecting a lot onto this movie.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder The institution's accolades are a measure of popular success and not necessarily of artistic talent. Still, perhaps I am misinterpreting the term "heavyweight." In which case, I bow to you. Alright then.
He is WONDERFUL in Mr. Right! Dances in, kills everyone and dances out!
Sam Rockwell chooses roles based on his passion for the character. He is not in it for the money, that's just a bonus. That and his incredibly unique personality, borderline insanity, is what makes Sam Rockwell so great and yet so under the radar.

I only know him from his dancing. I’ll have to look up more of his movies. His dancing is extraordinary.
My favourite, The Green Mile, definitely
I love Sam Rockwell,
I saw him (Sam Rockwell)for the first time 20 years ago in the movie Safecrackers with Georg Clooney and after this movie he was my favorite actor.
I like You Sam and wait of more movies
Do not Cloomey me
I absolutely love Sam Rockwell!!! Always have, always will!!! Dance for me Sam!!! 🥰
Excellent video. Undoubtedly he's the best actor of this 'new' generation.
Confessions of a dangerous mind is genuinely so good and a must for Rockwell fans
Hands down, he is my fave actors. Laggies is the best rom-com around. So chuffed he's finally been recognised.
I love Mr. Right👏
I can’t believe you didn’t even mention his performance in Galaxy Quest!!
So many great performances that I didn’t have time to mention sadly. Haven’t seen Galaxy Quest for years - I need to revisit it.
Galaxy Qyest is really good but there are so, so many options this list could have taken hours! He killed it in The Green Mile!
Guy Fleegman!
yes and also Green Mile, he left a lasting impression with that creepy role.
My thoughts EXACTLY!!!
He was hysterical!!
Lawn Dogs, if you haven't seen it, definitely one of his weirdest. I just saw Jojo Rabbit. Rockwell undoubtedly gives the best adult performance of that film. The kids were excellent too.
I'm watching jojo rabbit right now.
It is great
He's the absolute best in Jojo Rabbit!
Yeah i mentioned Lawn dogs. 1 of his best. also Box of moonlight he is incredible.
He was AMAZING in Seven Psychopaths and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri!
I've never seen a bad performance from Rockwell. Seven Psychopaths is one of my favorite movies of all time. But man, Green Mile, Three Billboards, Moon, Vice. Just everything he does is fantastic.
I love you Sam Rockwell!
He is my favorite of his generation of actors for sure. Moon is amazing film
I realized just how good and talented actor Sam Rockwell is when I saw "Moon". I have not noticed him before cuz he was so good a character actor that you remembered the character not the actor. A vastly underrated and underestimated talent.

Trillian was silly to lose this man. ZAPHOD IS KING 👑👑😍.
My top 3 Sam Rockwell films:
Three billboards
Richard Jewel
The way way back
Sam is the absolute BEST! He is so underrated but he is the indie movie king!
"Box of moonlight" is one of his best movies.
I had forgotten this one! THANK YOU!!!
I love Sam Rockwell. He is my favorite.
Thank you.
MR. RIGHT WAS AMAZING SORRY

Seven Psychopaths is criminally underrated

A box of moonlight !
He's really cute 😳
Nowhere has anyone mentioned "Box of Moonlight".
Moon is well worth watching. Agree with you wholeheartedly about the lack of Oscar nomination for that performance
Good vid mate, Rockwell is awesome.
I watched 7 psychopaths in cinemas,
Cracking movie
Like the ranking vids. Keep it up!
Thanks heaps mate, as always, appreciated.
I was going to be pissed if Moon wasn't mentioned.
I adore Rockwell!!!
Have you seen Box of Moonlight?
A young Sam Rockwell, John Turturro...
Galaxy Quest????? So far under the radar that it didn’t even get a mention? Haven’t any of you SEEN the show?
You could add lawn dogs to the list too. But yes moon is my number one too, a terrific film 👍
Could add so many -- all of his films are fantastic
The way way back, brilliant film.
I too love Mr Right.
While I love them all, Box of Moonlight and Jerry and Tom need to be there.
God, he's always fantastic, isn't he? I'd recommend "Snow Angels" as another under-the-radar one. It's a decent movie overall, but Rockwell's performance is what makes it really worth watching.
Dave, your definition of Hawaiian Shirt" is decidedly loose 🤣🤣🤣
mr right just watched it again for the 10fh time fucking awesome ... i like the green gummy bears too
no Box of Moonlight?!? C’mon!
I fell in love with him when he played Eric Knox.
Moon is amazing!
He's incredible in Seven Psychopaths
Wanted to watch "moon" and tried to stop in time and juuust heard "the body was... him"
Not a spoiler - this happens in the first 10-15 mins of the film 😉

Also great in Heist with Gene Hackman.
Zaphod Beeblerox and Eric Knox.
Galaxy Quest?
I would definitely say his roles in Snow Angels & The Winning Season are realer/more sincere than The Way Way Back.

Was he in a film about going jail to get to a politician or something along those lines, remember it being a great film but cant find the name of it.

I love MOON! He was excellent.
Worth mentioning better living with chemistry with Olivia wilde
Also welcome to collinwood is well worth a watch
thanks for the recommendation for Mr. Right. I've almost hit 'play' on that, several times, and thought naaaahh... but I'm going to give it a go.

The Green Mile.
