DIY Outdoor Cat Shelter

- Recently, a local stray kitten settled in our backyard. "Fosca" plays with our chickens and watches out for field mice (we hope!) in exchange for frequent food offerings and the odd petting session.
In this video, I'll show you how I built her a winter shelter. Our could season is no joke, and I wanted her to have a well-insulated home to call her own.

In 5000 years some kids playing around stumble upon an odd construction halfway buried in the dirt. Not knowing what to think of it, they send holographic images to their parents and teachers to help them make sense of it. Long story short, the incredibly sturdy construction still intact and with traces of red paint still noticeable on the roof, was moved to a local museum for display after careful analysis and studies in the most advances laboratories of the land. The display explains how a skilled, animal loving craftsman around 2000 used many hours of his free time after work to make a weather proof and comfortable house for a cat. 💖😁🇩🇰

This is a definite upgrade on my improvised sturdy cardboard box, draped in plastic sheeting, hidden in a bush so my husband wouldn’t find it, stuffed with pillows and blankets.
I kept saying "Wow", as I watched your precision craftsmanship!!

I have 3 cats that decided my yard is their home, and I'm happy for it, I wanna make them a double house, because 2 of the cats get along great, since the big one adopted the small one and acts like she's his mother, and the other cat is a male that don't get along with the big momma cat, so separate entrances would be best, and a dividing wall so they don't see each other

Wow! There isn't a whole lot more to say, but what a lucky kitty. It's too bad not all feral kitties can have such a grand shelter. I just wish I had the money for the awesome tools, the time, and the knowledge to build something like that for my feral kitties. Great job!

He even use the left over siding so it matches my home.
Great job, WB. It just goes to show that Fosca in particular and cats in general are smart enough to pick the right hooman to adopt. Beautiful work, and I bet Fosca is loving it. And I'm totally jealous of your fabulous handicraft skill. You built this in the amount of time it takes me to hammer a nail, bend it, straighten it out again, then hammer my finger.

You could, if you wanted to. My Sister works does this type of work. Built me a table and 3 adults can stand on it. Don't use being female as an excuse.

I would put the entrance on the smaller end with the roof angled down to give more protection from wind and rain. Also cover the entrance with waterproof material, when wet the particle board will deteriorate. Otherwise, great little house.

I'm in the middle of building a cat house for outside of the house when our cat Nico has to wait for us while it's raining.
I was thinking of some insulation for the floor (i.e.waterproof fabric) and was going to have some raised legs too so the cold morning floor wont affect him but it never occurred to me to put insulation in the sides and roof inbetween boardings.
Even though I am only a beginner and have made a large birdhouse/feeder for my dad I feel your awesome skills are going to help me a GREAT deal!

Really nice built. That said. What keeps the roof on if high winds approach? Maybe add a couple hook and eye bolts.
A flexible plastic flap door with magnets at the bottom would keep out the wind. if it had grommets at the top it could be screwed in and replaced if the plastic got brittle in the winter.
