Mirella Freni sings the Tatiana's letter scene "Puskai pogybnu ja" from the opera EUGEN ONEGIN (by P.I.Tchaikovsky) - The Gala Reopening of the Zürich Opera House 1984
I have loved Mirella Freni since I first heard her on record. It was my great good fortune to hear four of her recitals and a number of her appearances at The Met, as well as Carnegie Hall. She was an exquisite artist who never failed to move me. For me, there is no one today who can touch her.
I'm not sure the year, I think it may have been her debut in this role- but I saw her in a Chicago Lyric Opera production of this and with the staging & everything it was absolutely heart-wrenching. I LOVE this scene & I agree, it is as if it was written for her!
Beautiful Performance! I was shedding tears listening to this. Diction and expression is amazing from a singer who is not Russian. Brava!
Bravissima Mirella! 💖

Merveilleuse Mirela, tu vas manquer au monde lyrique.
Freni is the best Tatiana ! She understands what she is singing about .

1984 reopening of theZurich Opera. And Freni was no novice to the role. It was simply her’s.
Bella aria
It is an aria that might have been written for her.
the best tatyana ever ...
I don't necessarily like watching her sing, but I do believe she is the greatest female voice ever next to Caballe.

Lovely but for the authentic impetuous Russian Tatiana see Oda Slobodskaya, who sang it only a generation after it was written.
