The technical learning is amazing but most valuable above all is how you confirm that professionals in real life just move the lights and modifiers around till they find something that looks good-whatever that may be, and depending on the object. It really dispels the fear that there is something more to being a pro or a good photographer we is beyond this and very difficult to learn. Practice builds experience-I will keep playing with light and note the differences. Thank you.
Your videos are amazing material. Also love how you do one-take so we can see the whole process v. a bunch of jump cuts where the person shows you something in 10 minutes and you learn nothing. Thanks for clarifying the ISO feature. I know for sure on lower end camera’s you have to be careful otherwise you will introduce noise which is why I was not a fan of ISO. But now it makes sense why photographers would choose to get a higher end camera since it can handle a higher ISO setting before potentially introducing noise, plus other cool features it may have over the lower end camera’s.

Hey Luke love your videos keep em coming. I'm looking at taking product shots of furniture and would love some advice on light. Strobes vs continuous lights vs flash/speedlite with larger products.
Thanks Charlie. You can shoot most large products with speed lights. Difference between speed lights and strobes is merely that strobes have more power. But using big soft boxes (light modifiers) can spread out the light more for bigger products.
I would not recommend constant lights just because flashes give much more light so that it overpowers any other lights which may be coming from the environment
I subscribed when i heard you swear even though i watched four of your videos and enjoyed them I only got a sense of your personality when you started talking "normally" Thanks for the videos

Hey Samantha. YES the D300 would be perfect! And heck yeah, try making your own softbox per the instructions in my other videos. The only real difference between a bought one and a DIY softbox is usually the bought one will last longer and not break

Luke, you have really helped me with product photography. My question is, where do you start with lighting? I have several soft boxes but I’m trying to understand placement. With my small subjects I use an enclosure/box. But for bigger subjects I use soft boxes. Can you tell me how a basic set up would be? I know it’s about shadows but what else am I supposed to achieve with continuous lighting? It might sound like stupid questions but I’m trying to understand the art of photography and lighting. Hey dude. Well that’s probably where my big course fills in the gaps. But to practice you should just start with a single softbox and play around and see what angles make your product or person look “good”. There’s really no law about what looks good except what you or the majority thinks looks good. That’s why it’s a bit of an art and not a science so much. But start with a single light. Then when you feel good and confident with that then try adding two lights and so on. That’s a good way to practice. For more then that’s why I made my photography course

Yes you can! For outdoors you may need a stronger powered flash though to overpower the sunlight. This is why people use strobes, which are basically just a much more powerful version of a flash

Every or every other sentence should have an F bomb in it! Meanwhile, I’m still stuck on auto with my camera, or I use my phone……..I know, pitiful right? I just need to shoot candles for Shopify. I have my settings on my camera exacly like yours, but my pics come out very dark and I am really struggling to get something usable. I have tried 2 lights, made a filter with baking paper, but still no joy. Any suggestions, please?
@@LukeAyers Hi Luke, thanks for getting back to me. I have a flash but not a 'disconnected' one... there is no link between my flash and my camera once the flash has been taken off the camera. I have been using a strong battery-driven light as well as a lamp with a little bit of a yellow bulb. I have another lamp that I still want to try, but I don't have much hope since that one is heavy to handle and all its light shines upwards. I have also been trying to soften the flash (obviously while connected to my camera) by putting some baking paper over the light of the flash. It works ok, but the images still have lots of shadows and it doesn't look white and fresh like it should.
Also, please so some friggin affiliate Amazon links to what you are using! Trying to piece it together as we'd like to buy a flash & soft box, would love to see what you use, and for you to get some kickback for when we buy it :)

Rotating the table 90 degrees from your camera position would have made it much easier to move your key light and reflector fill light in closer to your products to reduce or modify your shadows

That's perfectly fine, dude. I started with only products for years before I shot people. Just take it step by step and you will be fine.

Yes, light works the same way either its photo or video. But for videos you of course can't use flash, you need a continuously running light.

What light are you using? With these settings you'll need to have a flash. A normal light won't be bright enough.

Samsung phones have been able to shoot in JPEG + RAW for a good while :)
