- Recently, I've been hunting for another iMac G3 (a very specific model) along with a few other G3 related parts to make some awesome video content for all of you to enjoy. While I search for the items I need, I thought I'd pull out one of my existing machines and respond to a few requests that I received on the previous video that this Mac starred in. Those requests were, gaming and internet browsing!

Set the time on your iMac and it will resolve some of the certificate crap
I picked up two of these from a recycling center a few years ago and if I remember correctly, one of them is actually a 700MHz model. I will have to extricate them from storage tomorrow and have a look. :3
I love the idea of a kid getting a '90s-early 00's computer, disconnected from the internet, as their first computing device. That's the way we were able to grow up and I think it definitely had its advantages.

I completely agree, it will make the kid not rely on technology as much as the modern kids do and hopefully no fortnite :)

Great take on Eli and his first PC! I am actually keeping my Powermac G5 Late 2005 for the same reason. It won't sell for a lot anyways and I bought it 3 years ago, because I was always dreaming of a cheesegrater. :) But we should remember though, that it will maybe take a few years until they can start using it. I started using our DOS machine with 4 or so. :D
Giving Eli an iMac G3 is an awesome idea, although I can see why you don't want him to have internet at such a young age. He's far too young to cope with these popups and error messages.
Amazing computer. I could never afford a Mac as a kid. Always want one of this and an ipod.

Definitely not easy to use the internet on old machines, but its still fun anyways :)

the iMac G3 was the first computer I ever used, back when I was 3. It had KidPix, ski 3D and a bunch of demos on it from MacFormat CD's. Lots of fun, I miss that computer

I agree children should learn about a computer with out the internet.....usually they will be more intelligent overall hahahaha!!!!! Great video and bring back a lot of memories!
Hey silly question, is it possible to install old iMac games by USB stick? Would it need to be something specific? I'd imagine it would freak out discovering a 256gb USB stick :D

FYI, most modern sites block versions of IE older the 6 because of security issues.
The version of YT you loaded on Classilla is the original mobile site, for featurephones basically. The rtsp stream would normally be played by the video player on Symbian phones. :)

you can watch youtube and browse the internet pretty well but you need special software for it.. youtube will lag a lot but you can get it to run at least.. there was a program where you just pasted in the video link and it would play the video.. I used that on my old g5 too

i spent like 10 minutes searching the channel for videos about why his hair is white, and then i finally read the channel name.
the optical drive probably just needs a good clean and the eject mechanism probably just needs a small amount of grease

it cant load any https sites. the old version of IE cant deal with the current security certs used in HTTPS

I've always wanted to get into the old iMac G3, or even the eMacs just as a reminder of where Apple's revival came to light (not to mention those are pretty much the last CRT-based Macs ever made). Somehow to see one of these would probably be a better investment over the original Mac line from the 1980s and early 1990s.
It's an SSL Error. Since most of the sites you're visiting are all SSL Secured, they use newer certificate algorithm that Internet Explorer doesn't support/understand.

That Harry Potter game shows how repetitive animations and sound assets were back in older games lol.
Most websites block older browsers by the way for security reasons. That and they simply don't support the newer standards so they don't have a clue how to render them.
the sound on the slot loading imacs are a lot better i had a lime green tray loading imac and when i got my white 700mhz the speakers are so much better
I go through old Macintosh phases as well! I’m currently into my PowerBook G4 titanium 1GHz the most because it’s my fastest OS 9 machine I have. But before that I was in a super old PowerBook phase where I just wanted to fully power up my PowerBook 170 with new battery cells

I also have a spare iMac G3 FlowerPower and want to set it up as computer for my daughter (currently 2y old). Is there a way to get the old classic OS games that are suitable for kids (so no shooters etc). I'll guess you can download them somewhere legally by now?
iMacs are great, but I think by know you can also get a iMac G5 rev.A for cheap and that one is easy to fix as the backside just unscrews easily.
Sweet video! I still need to watch the other iMac G3 video soon. I'm sure the reason why no sites worked is because your time isn't set correctly (especially considering it showed 5:00 AM, which I doubt you record at this time XD). Change it and it should work fine. As for the iMac, your best bet would be a 700 SE model, which is the last model ever produced before the iMac G4.
My first computer was an iMac G3 and it was amazing. I had it on MacOS 9 and loved it. Eli probably would love it :D
I have 4 g3.s and a g4 and g5 tower plus a imac g5 and g4 and a few intel imacs along with 2 lciii with there mouse and keyboard and printer and there screens

I have the crystal white iMac 600mhz with 1gb of ram! I paid £10 for it at a car bootsale few years back
I'm understanding, the main problem is webpages are sending you throught https versions that aren't implemented in your browser.

I remember Duke Nukem 3D works great in 800x600 at my PC K6 200MHz 16MB Ram, S3 Trio 1MB back in 1997!!
The reason you are having trouble loading specific sites is because google is an html site and other sites are not html and mac os 9 only runs html hope this helps
8 years later (just discovered this), but I too have tried to access the web via OS9 (through an original turquoise Rev A iMac G3, 233MHz CPU), and have had limited success. I cannot download images from Google, and I cannot access e-mail at all. Some sites render well, but they're older sites lacking the more modern security protocols. As Metallica said, sad but true.
In 2001 on a Pc with a Duron Cpu I was playing Wolfenstein...what a gap.
the computer version of the sorcerer's stone game was my favorite game to play. i don't think i've ever seen video of someone else playing it lol
Check your time and date to make sure its correct. That may be your problem
I know the feeling.. i got my G3 itch, right after the amiga 500 itch, and the apple IIGS with hard drive itch.

Your Summer 2000 500DV SE model has the ATI Rage 128 Pro video with 8MB VRAM,, but you could get that Rage 128 Ultra - 16MB by finding any of the 2001 models 400 500 600 700 series. Includes a CPU upgrade to the PowerPC 750cx (G3) processor with a 256k on-chip L2 cache. Yours here has 512k "backside" L2 cache.
Just got hold of a iMac DV400 lime , time warp ... been upgrading it to 10.3.9 from 9.0 (yep this machine never got a single upgrade). Am looking for Tiger disc !!!. Tomorrow I pick up another iMac g3 (grey, so maybe 500 mhz) and my first powermac G3 blue and white !!!!!
If you ever do an update video for web browsing the imac g3, I would use theoldnet.com. You would not get modern websites, but this site can search for old versions of websites via the wayback machine and it removes any scripts or other bugs that old browsers cant run. It also has a wealth of other resources that are good for both pc and mac users at the bottom (some links only work on modern machines since those resources are from different people). Just a thought.

That old version of IE doesn't support new versions of SSL (the ). Can't load the secure page.

Cool video :) The error on IE is because this old version isn't supporting HTTPS and some pages require a secure connection

I want to get one of these but there is only one for sale online in sweden atm, its far north in the country and the seller refuses to post it, driving there thru the snow would be hellish :/
If you set your date and time, it should fix the error you are getting in internet explorer. The reason the error is showing is because the systems date is not within the certificates valid dates.
I have a 400 MHz model running Mac OS 9
I've got an iMac G3 233Mhz and I can't for the life of me find an Apple keyboard and puck mouse for it. Also I was about to mention Classilla but you beat me to it. This is why I should wait to comment until the end of the video XD
+Shiny El. Ghosteo I was recently given a imac g3 from 2001 in pristine condition, sans keyboard and mouse. Generic PC keyboard and mouse work fine on that, except all 2 usb ports are taken. Unless you're a real apple aficionado, any new laser mouse beats the puck mouse with mechanical trackball hands down.
I still remember my first computer, it was a Macintosh classic, still got it, with original keyboard and mouce it has been hardly used as I cant use crts for more than 10 minutes as I get a headache but I still love it. Always will, also I got the original box and packing materials it's not yellowed surprisingly as well. Anyways how's eli doing?

The scroll wheel issues are that mouse I think. I had the same sort and it was a total arse to get it working :P
It is not loading UA-cam, because that uses https. And os9 does not know the current SSL encryption algorithms.
I have a 600 MHz iMac G3 Snow Edition from Summer 2001. I have to see if it has the same graphics card as the one you were talking about.

seems you've got internet digging to do for OS 9 and perhaps modding for greater enhanced capabilities? perhaps similar to unoffical service packs for windows versions if such a thing exists might be worth looking into, esp if you can just reformat and reload the OS if somethin messes it up. Might provide a answer to your ye old mac problems with the modern internet

I have recently read an Ars Technica article about people using Mac OS 9 and it made me very curious. People praised it for loading fast and things and I wanted to see it for myself, but I don't own any macs at all. I can say I am very disappointed. Yea, sure, it is pretty good for a classic, just like Windows 98, but for today standards, it is ridiculous.
Some even claimed an PowerMac G4 with OS 9 performed better than an i7 with El Capitan on an SSD. That's some crazy people out there. I am a Linux enthusiast and I primarily use Ubuntu (it is a little heavy, but I like it, it's easy to use). But when it comes to speed, my Arch Linux virtual machine with LXQT is snappier than any OS I've seen: Ubuntu & forks, any Windows, MacOS / OS X and Mac OS 9. And it's a virtual machine on a damn HDD.
I am not complaining about OS 9, this was a good video overall, I am complaining about those nuts people that are saying OS 9 is faster than El Capitan on SSD and that OS 9 has the best interface ever. Holy crap, I never heard such bulls**t ever. Also, I don't have anything with people that use OS 9 because of financial concerns, or because they like it more, or because they need it for some reason (like DNA Synthesis program). But I do have something with people that are saying OS 9 is the best: they either never used a modern PC or if they did and they are still saying that OS 9 is faster than a modern OS, they are insane.

It's the SSL/TSL encryption version, it's not supported by the browser. But even if it was, HTML5 videos would still not work :P Also, the "no access" errors were because you were just typing the name of the site and the browser was not appending .com at the end. It was trying to go to wikipedia/ for example.

Do you even read what it shows?! It tells you that your time is set wrong and thats why the certificates won't work. Also on the Classical page it says that it loads mobile sites for performance reasons.

Make a video on OS 9 plz!!! I got a Powerbook G4 with OS 9 on it and it's awesome!! Quite usable though I am having difficulties loading games from macintosh gardens website. Particularly toast and dsk files.

i just got one of these, i have the slightest idea what exactly it is, it has a 400 mhz powerpc g3 processor and 192 mb ram, same color as yours and also has a vga port on the back :)
I think your IE problem with unknown signature algorithm has something to to with the SSL certificate not being compatible. Could also be an issue with JavaStript, CSS Styling, Flash (eww), etc.

+coolbro12389 Nope, it's definitely TLS 1.1/1.2 not working in IE4. Those were both released long after IE4 was. That's why IE4 doesn't recognize the algorithm and craps out.
