  • A history of OO gauge model railway petroleum tank wagons, based upon those in my collection!
(due to the size of this video the viewer may wish to view it in sections, noting down the time code ready for the next session)
Where do I start, well the beginning I suppose. I wanted to find out the periods that the tank wagons would be correct in, this turned out to be a hugely complex question.
Resulting in my first and probably last ‘MEGGA’ production.
In the video I mention links and references so that comes next.

Hello, what a wonderful interesting informative video. Well done sir, in my long railway career I worked on King George Dock in Hull as a shunter for a few years. We used to take tank wagons in and out of BP chemicals. We used to make trains up in the sidings then pull them up to our porta cabin with our pilot engine which was a class 08 then we put the 08 on the next siding then waited for the class 37 to come light engine, then we would bring the loco onto the tanks, go underneath and put the screw coupling of the loco onto the tank, screw it up, fasten the air pipes together then walk down the train to the back of the tanks to do a brake continuity test. We would signal to the driver to pump air into the system so as to release the wagon brakes. When the brakes had come off the wagon wheels we checked the wagon brakes had come off the wheels then signalled to the driver to expel the air out of the system so we could check that the brakes had come off again. We then made sure there was a red flashing light fixed to the rear of the train. We then got the driver his train list, the driver also had to know his route availability as well. I think I've got it right?. It was a long time ago now. Unfortunately there where some redundancies when a company called LOADHAUL took over so I moved to NETWORK RAIL as it was called at the time. And that's another long story in my railway career. Sorry for going on a bit, my son tells me I never stop talking. Lol. Best wishes from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. 👍🚂

Thank you so very much for this thoroughly enjoyable presentation, and at last a helpful and accurate discussion on the appropriate tanker wagon periods represented by their liveries. I have spent hours trawling the internet for this very information, simply so that I do not blythely run (say) tanker wagons which were discontinued in the 1950s with 'blue era' diesels. I shall watch this again! Many thanks again. Jonathan

Thanks for very informative video. I have built up a fleet of tank wagons from when Mainline introduced their wagons in 1977 . I built them up because they looked good , so have United Molasses, Royal Daylight, Ronuk etc , but never knew if they were accurate . From what I can gather they are all the right liveries but perhaps not the right wagons (sounds a bit like Morecambe and Wise!) Ref a sighting of Ronuk at Carlisle, I wonder if this is confused with a paint manufacturer from Haltwhistle . I can remember 2 tank wagons stored there in the 70s . From memory they were blue because I bought the Ronuk wagon as it looked like them . Very interesting though and I think the video is a great way of explaining it. Well done , obviously you’ve carried out lots of research there.

Hi Russell, very many thanks for that. Yes you are right, most are based on real wagons but sometimes made as cradle mounted types for ease of production when in fact there were many more saddle types built. However as all things model, they look good when seen as intended :) That is most interesting re those tanks from Haltwhistle, I think you may well have it as the RONUKs being up there was a bit odd. I am most grateful for your kind comments and to see that my efforts have been of use

A single long-wheel base or bogie wagon could be used in place of the 2 short-wheeled wagons. Theis would keep the loaded Class A wagons away from the steam locomotive or the brake van and its oil lamps. Once battery tail lamps and diesel locomotives were commonplace then the barrier wagons on trains of Class A wagons were no more.
No train with Class A wagons could also carry other dangerous goods such as explosives. Additionally wagons loaded with steel products could not be coupled directly to loaded tank wagons in case the load came loose in an accident.

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited there is one other question, you mention some RAF (?) tanks being camoflage painted, any pix of one of them? as camoflage in the RAF was to standard design, one piccy serve all so to speak! RAF Halton and several other stations had their own 'Branch' line to supply fuel and spare parts as Engines,Fuselages , wings etc were under constant demand during the war, but I've never seen a layout based on one , either some specialised army bases ie Tanks and Artiliery as well as Nval ports supplying naval supplies up to and including 15" Rifles (naval term for the huge guns on Battleships ,but I still havent found owt about them piccy wise yet though R.j Essery's superb book Midland wagons has a lovely pic, volume 1.

Hi, I'd need to look at the video again but I recall the camouflage was just painting the tanks dark grey so they did not stick out to aircraft. If you drop me an email I can send you what photos I find. mru_admin@insussex.plus.com

Excellent video, but I note that you only touch on the Bachmann anchor mounted tank wagon. I am modelling a tank train from BP Llandarcy in the period '54-'56 and am using the Shell BP black tank wagon 38-776 being pulled by a BR 2800. Would this be correct?

Many thanks indeed. I can't remember exactly now but I was sure I'd given background to the Benzine? Tank. Yes BR 2-8-0s worked tank wagons. Despite the tank in question being class B there would still have been barrier wagons where possible

@@williamhawkins-vx6sq hi, any old unused wagons, certainly with class A tanks two wagons between loco and tanks and guards van and tanks. I've even seen box vans used as well as bogie bolster wagons. With class B sometimes just one wagon or often as not nothing lol

Hi Mike - As usual I am on here doing research for my layout and as I was going through my photo collection I found an actual photo of tank wagons parked up in the yard right behind my house. The photo is an old black and white and I would say dates bet 1960 and 1970. I always thought they contained oil of some sort and there could be quite a few of them there.
They were black in colour and disgustingly dirty. In the photo which shows South Acton railway station you can see the two tanks wagons and they look exactly like the Bitumen Bitumuls wagon at 5 mins into this video, they even have the same sort of gubbins on the roof.
You are unable to see the sides but from memory if there was anything on the sides it was so faded and dirty you could never read it.
There is a number on the nearest wagon, right at the top, 727 in large white lettering.
I cannot find anything on and any help will be much appreciated.
I am still staggered I had this in my collection, my goodness it brings back memories.
    Regards Chris

Hi Chris sounds interesting. Can you go to my channels community tab and post a scan of the wagon, I'd love to see it and may be able to offer an ID
