and as always....
Stay in the Woods,
Dan
Dan, thanks for reminding us to check ALL OUR EQUIPMENT. I've totally forgotten to check the edge on my shovel. I'll be rectifying that immediately. As always, good advice and good tips. Thank you for all your work and attention to detail.
😂 *LOL "Dig a deep hole and take a sh..." . Great content as always Dan!*
A shithole 😂
I prefer to leave one. Taking one seems a bit weird.
I have never thought of filing my shovel. Thanks for the tips.
I've restored 8 old shovels. Various shapes. But I shape them down slowly with a grinder and sander and then paint them. The rotted old handles are replaced with a whole fitted branch for strength. Secured in with a bolt and gorilla glue. My aim is always something akin to the cold steel shovel.
If you're handy with tools, it's easy and cheap. Excellent gifts.
You got a big smile out of me right at the intro. Great information as always. When I was growing up I thought a hoe was for mixing concrete because that’s all I ever saw it used for. When I started to garden I learned it needed to have a sharp edge to make it easier to use. Same for my shovels. Keep up the great work.
The Polish shovel I got from Coalcracker is really well made, big fan of it.
Dan, part 2: take care of the handle! I bought one of those Cold Steel “Soviet” shovels.
First thing I did was to remove the handle and sand off the lacquer preservative, as you would do on an inexpensive axe. This stuff can cause blisters. When smooth as I desired, I gave it about a dozen coats of boiled linseed oil.
I enjoyed it, thank you.I even learned something.
Good file work, picking up for the after stroke. Good video. Too many people don't sharpen their shovels
Very useful, thank you🙂
Now im ready to join nice bushpoop with friends👍🤘🤘
Good vid for archeologists too.
I love a shovel ! I either use my sharpened shovel or a big blade (machete or parang) with which I'll dig anyway. Now I'm thinking a small hand-shovel would save my edge. I was looking for a gardening shovel I could mod, but your polish shovel looks good !!
If I am at home, I go lazy and use a grinder flap wheel. Rusted blades get the rust removed and a good coat of oil. When brought in they get the mud scraped and hosed off followed by a light coat of oil. For dry dirt nothing beat an old piece of burlap bag hanging next to where the shovel is stored along with some used moter oil and an old paint brush. In the field you want a file.
My folks always had a big bucket with sand/ oil for all garden and digging tools plus sledge/ axe. And once a year a good cleaning. Plus a good stone wheel sharping. In between a file. Their tools were 40 years still A plus
Nice demo
No sir I want to shave with my shovel sharpen it up😂😂😂. Good video as always
Dear Mr. Coalcracker.... one of your previous lives was Potter Palmer of Chicago.
Cool video
Thanks Dan!
Hey Dan
The polish shovel may have sharpened edges on the long straight side, the "dollar store shovel"... never ever had that and should not.
Different tools here.
If anything the dollar store shovel would have a sharp square edge similar to the spine of a knife on its long straight side.
Shovels , knives, axes, saws etc.. have different designs for "Reasons".
Having grown up operating a shovel (I believe I was born Shovel in one hand Rope in the other with spurs screwed into my boot heels and 10 years of callouses) on the Ranch and farm then using several types of E tools in the Marines I can say that a properly maintained shovel is important. Given the choice I would have a number "ought" or 0 ( zero) full length shovel. A number 2 shovel moves more dirt per scoop but will wear you out fast.
Oh good, i was about to say sharpening a shovel is to help with digging, especially through roots.
Another great video!
I sharpen mine at a 25 to 30 degree angle which gives a tough edge that holds up well and is easy to maintain.
Lol, scandi grind or sabre edge, Richard? 😊
@@jamespaul2587 I have an original Spetsnaz shovel given to me by one of their soldiers when we trained together. I sharpen it the way he showed me.
I need one now! Thanks 🙏🏽
When I got my jeep I. Put. A shovel. Ax 12ga. In it get bad spots. With. Theses. What do. You think
If you have to sharpen your shovel, you need to find softer ground!! At least less rocky ground! A good day of moving gravel should keep it keen!!
Welcome to Pennsylvania!! 😂
Ace stuff
I dont bother with an axe or belt knife or folding saw. But I DO add a modfied Crunch multitool, and some saw blades to be held in the vicegrip of the Crunch. I also modify the ferrule of the shovel so as to not need tools to swap out handles. I can make whatever handle I need for the shovel in about an hour, converting it into a 2 handed axe (with stone weight) paddle, spear, or adze/rake/pick/hoe. The paddle variant can be used as a posthole digger or vertical ice-chipper, too. The small flathead blade of the crunch is an awl/drill, for making the mounting holes in the shovel handle The medium flathead is a chisel/scoop-knife. The SS serrated knife blade is gone and so is the SS file and Phillips. Replacements are a carbon steel regular knife blade, and a couple of real deal Nicholson file blades. One is triangular, for sharpening the saw teeth.. When you know to carry a proper shelter, and to use hot rocks and Siberian fire lays, you dont need an axe.
Great video on getting the camp shovels back in "sharp-shape"!
Q. If the shovel is carbon steel (or such)... do you wipe a bit of oil to the edge to prevent rusting?
I just found this channel and am disappointed to see that your survival classes are in PA , I don’t live anywhere near there but wish I did
50 to 70 year old shovels are made of better steel than imported ones now
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Looks like temper is blued on that Polish shovel. Don't know their carbon content though.
An aside...rusty, dirt caked shovel? Find a pile of either sand, or fine gravel. Shoveling the material on top of itself will shine the shovel blade. Your mileage may vary.
@0:08.. I stopped.. it cut you off.. I'm positive you were go to say " take a shovel"... BUTT it cut it off...😂
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
My garden spade gets an occasional file but the angle is nowhere near a knife blade.
You're a gift to us tin foil hat wearing tree hugging survivalists 🥰🤠🥰🧸🦣🐻💜😏☺️🤗😉😘💋💞💓!!!!
And Howdy Howdy from DeadHorse Alaska, Alvin Texas and Maine handsome young man 😉!!!!
moving the file TOWARD a sharp edge is an unnecessary risk. Dont do it.
Really guy 😂
I like machetes
Couldn't tell from the blueish
color towards the point.
Hopefully someone hasn't
used that shovel in a fire and
ruined the temper.
Dude are you related to brock lesnar ?
So Kayla has a niece and nephew, where is their mom?
Freedom. Is it a choice? Or is it a right given by man. Or something you are born into? Or a God given rule? Just for the algorithm, unless you would like to comment?

I subscribed to you, Coal, but your opener, for this video, was all wrong. You are an impressive dude, but, with this, I am not impressed. [I stopped @ 00:04 seconds] You have, half a million subscribers. You will not even see this comment but viewers, like me, will. Five hundred thousand, that is a lot of responsibility for someone who is supposed to be offering; safe, survivable instruction. 10,000 faithful viewers (2%) could lose an eye, trying to emulate you, with your hatchet trick. You're looking like a showboat to me. I could say it to your face. I am a 63 yr old retired carpenter and veteran in Canada. In that order. That was the most unsafe... I am lost for words and I'm sure that many feel the same. Let it reflect in likes or comments. Buddy! some people shave with their axes. Didn't care to see the rest of the video. Gonna hold the 'like' on this one, Coal. No longer a subscriber in Ontario, Canada, take care all...
That was a very funny beginning of on video .
Nice job on video..
