What an impressive vet tech. Taking her time and using lots of expression in her voice. Very gentle too. Many people freak out when you grab a bird by the head, but it's actually more dangerous to the bird to grab their ribcage. They suffocate very easily that way.
This was very difficult to watch. Poor Santina. With that said, those Dr.s did an exceptional job of comforting her and making the visit as painless as possible. Thanks for the update.
half of these comments are people who don't know anything about birds and think grabbing them by their necks is bad or animal abuse. Its the only way to restrain birds to see if something is wrong so they don't bite or scratch. The veterinarians knew what they were doing.
sa rah actually grabbing the bird by the back like you were describing suffocates them a bit. grabbing them by the back of the neck doesn’t hurt them at all. in fact I can pick my African Greg up by the neck. My African grey loves being wrapped in a blanket like a baby but that’s different cause he’s not being restrained.
You have to be the guy from that compilation of funny parrots -this is how she takes care of her baby, this how she takes baby for a walk, and puts her to bed- recognize your voice!😄
Most of these people in the comment section have obviously never even researched about birds. Holding a bird by the neck is the safest way because holding them by the body can suffocate them, since they're diaphragm is different from our own. Research before disliking.
Nice of the vet tech to come out to get your bird & good to see they talk to the bird & are careful. I probably would have toweled her first. The avian vet I dealt with was rough with my bird when my bird is only the size of her hand. I won't take her to that vet anymore. Not all avian vets are gentle with our birds.
Hi Michael, I just rescued a Hahn's Macaw today. I have not real background on the bird, not really even sure of it's sex except she's called Molly. When I got her, the cage was terribly filthy, there was no food or water in it and the previous owner didn't have any food with him. He was more in a hurry to leave then have any concern about the birds well being. I want to get her no a pellet diet, the only thing I see on the bottom of the cage besides a years worth of poop is sunflower seeds. The bird doesn't seem to be over weight, but I'm no expert. I would like to know how to get a copy of your book and if you think this bird could ever be as friendly as Santana is? Was she just a special bird or is it your techniques. I haven't really approached the cage to much giving her an opportunity to get used to her new surroundings except to put some fresh food in for her. She ate an entire scrambled egg almost as soon as I put it in the cage. Can you give me any advice and also I see you have quite a few videos do you have one that covers my situation? Thanks for any help you can give me. Sincerely, Bill My email address is www.sailingwithbill@msn.com I appreciate any advice you can give me!
Yup, the book will really help you for getting started. Santina was trained based on the very same principles explained in the book. ParrotWizard.com/Book
Omg this definitely made me cry when she started screaming I don't know why. I know they are not hurting her just checking her out lol I cry every time I take my birds though 😂🤷♀️
I was under the impression that the cold (I live in Pittsburgh, where it can go down into the negatives) can cause shock, especially when taking them from a warm house to the outside.
Leah Froehlich Well in the winter and in negative temperatures then yeah! I recommend running your car for 10 minutes or until it warms up before bringing the bird into it so that the cold exposure is minimum.
+Parrot Wizard Um because people can use the license plate to find out where you live? There are websites that allow you to enter that info and it will tell you the address of the person registered on that plate.
It's perfectly legal, but a great way to make senseless trouble for people. You know, trolls, hateful people, idiots. They can send anything from hate mail to calling the cops in blatantly false 911 reports. Major videogame recorders on youtube and twitch have had the same done to them and worse.
I know this is old. But birds do just fine with one foot. I had a chicken that lost her foot. She lived for 3 more years. And was happy. Know I have a unlucky but happy cockatiel. With the 2 front talons missing on one foot And he gets around good. Better when he could fly. But he hert his wing. Like I say he is a unlucky bird. When we went to the vet for the wing. I found out he had a broke his leg at some point as well.
Hi I am a parrot lover and I own a umbrella cockatoo myself. I have a question I was in route to work and noticed a blue gold macaw outside in a cage that reminds me of sort of a dungeon. I live in Las Vegas and our weather is either very cold or very hot. It is mid April so sometimes the mornings can be cold. Is it normal for a macaw to be outside in a cage by herself. It really broke my heart when I seen it. My cockatoo is in the house with me all the time with her cage door open and she is free to roam around the house at all times except for night time for sleep. Appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank you.
I have a budgie like duke but his name is blue and whenever I try putting my hand in the cage he just attacks my hand how do I stop that or like help tame him
I had a budgie you have to place your hand in the cage for a little while to let her/him get used to your hand. Talk in a calm soothing voice. Set your hand on opposite perch and let them get used to it. It may take a while but I eventually fully trained my budgie baca and she was not fearful and biting me anymore.
About how loud is a Green Wing at their loudest? Hard to tell from the video. I've never met one up close before but I've always wanted one, and hope to rescue one in the future. Right now all I've got is this Jenday who can blow your ears off. So how loud is a Green Wing compared to a Jenday at their max volume?
sir please help me ,i have 4 babies of indian ringneck parrot in which first 2 parrots are losing theur wing and tail feathers and the other 2 are healthy their feathers are not falling ,all babies are 2-3 months old. please tell me what the problem
hey I hv female Alexandrian parrot, who got tht parrot fever from another parrot about 5 years ago. yes she survived. but lost her voice. she can only make a little noise. is there any chance she will ever improve and get her full volume?
should at least give them a general check once a year. Birds can hide sickness really well. By checking your bird every year, you know for sure that everything is fine. And no, a regular check once a year is fine. If the vet see something unusual during the check, the will vet let you know if there is something wrong, so you can act on it.
ok now I'm kinda worried about my first vet visit. just picked up my green wing macaw from the breeder about a week ago. I've been in contact with him and have been bonding with him/her while the breeder was hand feeding and we were both confident that i could take over. my baby is currently on 3 feeding a day and doing well. what scares me is in this video at 6:07 when this vet grabs the neck and squeezes santina to her chest. i am worried about tramatizing effects. i know of some birds that a simple response to a bite have changed their reaction to people and their trust has limited.
haha shes a bit of a winger :) same as my alexandrine boy. though mine was mistreated before he came to me. ive never rehab'ed a bird :/ but after a few weeks he completely came out of his shell and gained personality! :) hes a very loving happy boy now. though hes still terrified of hands and I don't know how to break it :(
XlseahawklX Offer him treats as a reward for good behavior. If he bites you, simply walk away and try later. If he lets you scratch him, reward him. If he steps up, reward him. It just takes time
I really need a vet like that for my bird :D my vet just take her and she's sharking after the vet :( I hate tanking her because she won't talk to me for 3 days after :(
the girl vet is way more friendly than my vet. my vet is too rough with my military macaw she acts like she hates her job and takes it out on the animal
Lorelei isn't even a vet but she's great with the birds. Unfortunately many people in the industry don't know how to handle the birds properly. Just do your best to find the best you can.
idk...you can join parrot groups online...like facebook and get advice there.. facebook.com/search/groups/?q=macaw facebook.com/search/groups/?q=parrots

yes, she was amazing and very strong.
This was very difficult to watch. Poor Santina. With that said, those Dr.s did an exceptional job of comforting her and making the visit as painless as possible. Thanks for the update.
she is just very scared, nothing more
that vet girl is soo deticated she even had bird socks on ;P lovely video
The guy vet had a Parrot tattoo so I think he might win... but yeah they were both pretty awesome!
+jjklumiar haha i didn't even noticed that. Good one!
i wish all the vets in my country to be like them
I now know what to expect at the 1st. vet visit...you eased my mind.
It is so interesting watching you gain the trust of this parrot and train her :)
CreekValleyCritters Holy Strudel, I have never seen you comment on any videos before. I don't know why I'm surprised by it though lol.
You turned a shower stall into a giant parrot cage? Smart you! Great money saver, and much more easier to modify often.
I agree!
That was a great vet clinic. I was impressed.
the bird is like you betrayed me!
That is one of the best Avian Vets/vet techs i have seen when it comes to working with birds!
Plus her socks are so on point :D
half of these comments are people who don't know anything about birds and think grabbing them by their necks is bad or animal abuse. Its the only way to restrain birds to see if something is wrong so they don't bite or scratch. The veterinarians knew what they were doing.
The bird dosen’t trust her enought to do that
sa rah actually grabbing the bird by the back like you were describing suffocates them a bit. grabbing them by the back of the neck doesn’t hurt them at all. in fact I can pick my African Greg up by the neck. Those vets were awesome!!!!! They need there own channel.
Awesome Vets!! Really nice to know that such specialized, and obviously caring attention, is available... The lady is REALLY neat!!!
i love that the vet and staff are SO good with her. and patient.
She looks much healthier than when she left the rescue place. Also happier
Michael you are truly gifted with working macaws i love it very very much.
Both the Vet and the Tech are incredible. I have a wonderful Aviary Vet but If I was near them I 'd switch
You have to be the guy from that compilation of funny parrots -this is how she takes care of her baby, this how she takes baby for a walk, and puts her to bed- recognize your voice!😄
Nobody has ever felt more betrayed in their LIFE. Both of those vet professionals are amazing. Bird tattoo and bird socks and obvious bird enthusiasm!
My cockatoo loves being wrapped up. I don't even have to wrap him when I trim his nails. He hands me his foot and I just trim
Lol
Lucky
Cockatoos love attention! ❤️
Poor bird hated being held like that but it has 2 be done
Great vid
That set-up is beautiful!
What a well behaved bird!!
Santina is adorable!!!!!!!!
Never been a bird person but watching lots of videos of them and definitely enjoying their personalities.
What a beautiful bird. Love the space you created. Wonderful.
I behave exactly like this lady around birds!!
This guy is sooo good with parrots❤️❤️
Just got my 2nd Green Winged (and Scarlet) and can't tell which wants to be with me the most! Now I have 5 macaws!
Only in NY the vet swears and the other vet has tattoos all over his arms :-D
She's a vet tech
What planet do you live on? The vet TV shows they have have tattoos.
I like the vets macaw tattoo, its really cool.
Most of these people in the comment section have obviously never even researched about birds. Holding a bird by the neck is the safest way because holding them by the body can suffocate them, since they're diaphragm is different from our own. Research before disliking.
I love Santina's room
That was GREAT. She seem like an expert in grabbing birds and foot long "animals".
parrot graduation 101- never trust a human if they are too nice to you (they might grab your neck)
the bird wont stand still they have to do that
santina is so cute!
yahoo! congratulations Santina to your first vet visit! : )
Cute sounds it makes when she grabs it!😀
Wow, she has made great progress with you: not that I had any doubt. So neat to see.
I love the socks that the nurse has on. Where did she get them from.
we need good vets for birds where I live our vets only known about dogs cats and other pets but not bird hateful
My research said peanuts weren’t not healthy. She is a sweet parrot! I have an African Grey.
My three macaws got concerned when they heard Santina's distress calls from my computer
Hi Michael, I just rescued a Hahn's Macaw today. I have not real background on the bird, not really even sure of it's sex except she's called Molly. When I got her, the cage was terribly filthy, there was no food or water in it and the previous owner didn't have any food with him. me too...nerves of steel!
SO CUTE. BEAUTIFUL BIRD. VERY DOCILE
What a gorgeous girl...the parrots nice too
beautiful bird
oh man! you are such a genius
just 1 week? wow
Amazing how you got her to go in and out of the carrier!
I felt surprised too when she grabbed her gently
My favorite bird is winged macaw
I'm shocked she's that loud around the bird the first time she met him!
Is verying cute
I've always been told to cover the carrier when I take a bird outside, especially if it's cold. Does Santina not need that because of her size?
I was under the impression that the cold (I live in Pittsburgh, where it can go down into the negatives) can cause shock, especially when taking them from a warm house to the outside.
Leah Froehlich Well in the winter and in negative temperatures then yeah! I recommend running your car for 10 minutes or until it warms up before bringing the bird into it so that the cold exposure is minimum.
What would you say the temperature range is that would be safe for a tropical bird? I have a caique that I travel with quite a bit.
Thank you so much! This has been by far the best experience I've had when it comes to getting information from a professional.
parrot wizard maybe you should blur your license plate
+Parrot Wizard Um because people can use the license plate to find out where you live? There are websites that allow you to enter that info and it will tell you the address of the person registered on that plate.
couldn't have said it better
+Quantum Hazard it's a cruel world my friend and we haven't discovered a lot

+Fazil Karodia attack on titan
The parrot is cute but she's waaay better!
I can tell This guy was born to stay with birds
Would an experience like that set a bird back and make it harder to train or towel socialize?
Urgent my parrot ate goldfish food it was a small piece will it cause any problems
+Bobby buck You should not ask people on line go to a god damn vet or he may die or get sick!
hello Bobby buck 💝💝💝
Bobby buck my friend 💝💝💝💝😍😍😍😍😄😄😇😇😇🎅🎅🎄🎄😍😍🎁🎁🎁😄😄
thank you this was great.

When a parrot gets its neck almost snapped
Wow, that was a little Tense..LOL....Nice Video..

The bird probably just was outside for a short amount of time to get some fresh air. If it wasn't too cold outside it's fine
Teabag Der Teebeutel every time I pass by the bird is outside though
why did you hold just obe parrot?
I have a budgie like duke but his name is blue and whenever I try putting my hand in the cage he just attacks my hand how do I stop that or like help tame him

My macaw won’t let anyone else touch her. How do you guys navigate around a bird thats fearful of strangers?

Every time my budgie bites me my other one attacks him

SECOND THING DONE WRONG VET LET THE MACAWON HER ARM. You have know control of the bird
I have a blue and gold macaw, she is 15 years old...shes never really gone to a vet...is this okay or am i putting the bird at risk
Risk. At the very least 1ce a yr if all is ok
Do they need a yearly shot or just check up
should at least give them a general check once a year. Birds can hide sickness really well. By checking your bird every year, you know for sure that everything is fine. That vet is so amazing 😂
5:47 Love her socks!!
What harness could I buy my bird
omg i love the Gouldian Finch tattoo!!!!
anyone know...is that the same guy in the sugar glider care videos?
howcast videos i think it was?
haha shes a bit of a winger :) same as my alexandrine boy. though mine was mistreated before he came to me. ive never rehab'ed a bird :/ but after a few weeks he completely came out of his shell and gained personality! :) hes a very loving happy boy now. though hes still terrified of hands and I don't know how to break it :(

can you take your macaw to any vet or just a bird vet ?
+Star50168 AJ bird vet...read the description..their called Avian Vet
so just a vet for birds ?
yup...if you have birds or considering getting one...take them too a Avian Veterinary :)
i have 4 macaws actually ...and one of them wont eat ! the problem is ... we dont have a avian veterinary
idk...you can join parrot groups online...like facebook and get advice there.. facebook.com/search/groups/?q=macaw facebook.com/search/groups/?q=parrots
i get stressed watching this poor santina
what were the xrays for? i'm assuming she was previously unwell?
These were initial test xrays to get a baseline of her health upon adoption. Being an older and female parrot we thought it would be best to check for certain potential issues.
ooohh ok well that's great she's a lovely bird :D so friendly :)
Could you please tell me the name of the carry cage and where did you get it from and the size please?
I know thats what they have to do but AWW she was scared :/
What is the price of Green-Winged Macaws?
Parrot Wizard Thanks for the reply, and that is a lot of money but it is worth such a beautiful bird!
TheOfficialHaximus About 2g's
$50000 is over 50-60 years, which is about 700-800/year. You can do it for a lot less with proper budgeting. If you are a late starter, the bird will outlive you :D
Please dear god what you plan on buying and doing that cost 800 a month.
untold44 Read again, it's 800 / year breaking down PW's numbers, probably on food, toy, vet visits etc. But i'm saying you can do it for a lot less.
Good job...!!!
I olmost cried when she held her by the neck 😢
It's fine they supposed to do that because birds can't stay still
And so they calm down
+Ghanim Alghanim She was AMAZING and she made it as painless as possible, it could have been 100x worse in the hands of a less experienced vet.
Why? It doesn't harm the bird in any way. I own 5 birds and whenever I take them to the vet they're always held like that. It's the safest way to hold a bird so it is calm and still.
+AUDIOSIGMA She's a vet tech, the man is a vet
i wanna ask, my 1 year cockatiel not loving his partner female cockateil, thet always fight each others, biting eachothers, and what i notice my male cockateil rubbing his back like sexual act :) on pillow, on my hand or in the cage ... plz tell me solution
