V8 supras make sense. Many do their races cars , and at one point they competed with a v8 in the jgtc series. Only the 6 cylinder is popular because of the fast and furious movie in America.
Am guessing they think it's unpopular because it is slower, where-as this new model is going to be faster than the existing 6 cylinder with the 4 cyl + electric motor.
To anyone who is watching this vid: as a Japanese person, I can assure that Best Motor is not a credible medium whatsoever. Please do NOT take any of the information in this vid as the truth. I think I mentioned this before, but Best Motor is not taken seriously in the automotive industry here in Japan by spreading unconfirmed/fake rumours. Almost all of the information about next gen cars in this magazine does not have any credible sources, and are just half-baked wishful thinkings of the writer which should not be taken seriously. Even some of the grammar and the Kanji characters in Japanese is wrong because it is not proofread by anyone. That is how bad the quality of this magazine is. Honest opinion did anyone really have a problem with bmw? I mean the B58 is the best engine on the market rn aside from maybe the s58. The ZF transmission aswell is the best on the market too.
You're not understanding why many had a problem with it. It had nothing to do with whether the car was great or not. The problem was naming it the Supra. It was a very cool car, especially after they added a manual transmission. But they should've called it something new, not Supra.

Just sharing a modified LFR platform will make it a vastly different car and price point of a Toyota version, while saving being the key point for R&D of a whole new platform with different drivetrain and suspension and dash display which are all just screens anyway. That’s how I can see them still making this, and the potential for a manual even better.
Agree - at this rate, there will be no Lexus model that’s exclusive to them… IS, LS and LC are the only remaining and all don’t look to have life after this generation with ICE
That magazine article is referring to the Celica it will have 400hp i4. The next gen Supra will return to a Toyota designed twin turbo inline 6 essentially 2 x 1.6 liter 3 cylinder mounted together. The target hp is 600hp & there will also be a new MR2. But it has not been green lighted to be sold in NA market yet.
If they made an i6 from the gr corolla engine it would be such an insane car. Two 3cyl engines together. There’s rumors though that the new 4cyl will be a crazy powerful engine, but we’ll see if it ends up being as powerful as they claim.
It's semantics, technically they are no quotas for the percentages of EVs you have to sell (apart from in the UK), but the only way the automakers can hit the CO2 targets is to sell zero emission vehicles. It's a bit of a hobby for many people on the left to play with words like that. Like changing definitions and making up and banning words.

I was a reserve race car driver back in the late 70's and so have driven manual transmissions most of my life. I can tell you from experience that the new automatic transmissions with manual override is a much better setup. It makes the car faster since the computer can shift faster than any human. If it was not true then why are all of the race cars using the new type of automatic transmissions. The only exception I can think of is NASCAR which I don't bother to watch. I currently drive a Nissan 370Z with the automatic transmission even though it is not dual clutch. It is simply better than the old manuals. I am excited that Toyota is trying to revive sports cars. I wish all of the manufacturers would follow their lead. Cars have gotten boring over the years.
I think they NEED to keep that inline 6 turbo. Would be better to give us back the 2jz twin t. And make it look more like an LfR or give it a mk3 or mk4 supra futuristic feel interior and exterior
I mean scraping bmw isnt a bad thing, but a 4 cylinder? That's no longer a supra. A supra is legendary and known for having an inline 6. I mean, they could have literally taken the 2J and put that back in, and it would be leagues ahead of whatever they're throwing in there for a 4 cylinder. Seems like a lot of brands have done this lately, revamped a dead car, and then just decided to murder it
Those headlights give me the urge to push aftermarket pop up headlights for the heck of it, and pls bring back the T-top for semi convertible fun like the prev MK models
That GR Super Sports name was supposed to be the name of the road going version of Toyota's GR010 Hypercar class race car which races in WEC. It supposed to be Twin Turbo V6 Hybrid powered Hypercar producing around 950hp. We even got to see an actual prototype going around in Fuji and another one with its top chopped off in Le Mans back in 2021. Sadly the project seems to be cancelled after that.
The front has some hints of the 1986 model. Also, I’m imagining it as a car with closed pop-up headlights. 😌 The rear reminds me of the Coquette on GTA 5.
let's be honest, sometimes Bestcar's info is quite precise, like the Crown info. Sometimes, it's just so mehhh, they start talking about GRMN supra in 2020, saying that car will be released with CS-output S58(550ps) with DCT in 23' and it's way overdue, but now the test car on Nur is more like a b58o1 supra based on gt4. Now forget that electric one, this "new supra" gonna have combine a p3 motor with transaxle(technically not p3 since after driveshaft) plus a battery on top, assuming there is even enough space. Isn‘t that quite surreal?
I was skeptical but test drove one and did a lot of research. 2nd best choice in my life was getting my 23 MT in Nitro Yellow. It is really the best bang for your $ in sports cars.

im just curious how theyre gonna pull off the chassis for this car. powertrain really isnt much of an issue for toyota compared to a lightweight racing chassis... which they basically have none. Coz they damn well have the engines right now, and as per toyota, in the future as well with that inline4. the 2GR is still available, albeit in hybrid form. we see that unit still in use in the LS500h and LC500h. The new V35A in hybrid form is pushing 437hp, n we looking at almost 460hp in the upcoming LX700h. so power isnt an issue. And if they truly wanna go batshit insane (for toyota atleast), well the current gen Toyota Century JDM has a hybridized 5L V8 thats producing ~430hp, and that V8 was detuned to produce that amount of hp. coz we know that that V8 on its own can push out 470hp. so imagine a electric supercharger with that fullbore 5L V8 thats producing close to 600hp,, n then augmented with a powerful hybrid from their PHEV line. thats 700hp easy. So yeah. engine is no issue. but chassis.... a lightweight chassis is whats toyota missing right now.
One reason to put the motor at the rear is. 1 they do not need the gear reduction of the transmission. 2 less torque through the driveshaft, can reduce its size and weight.
This will Copy hybrid parts from Toyota Crown. My parents have it. Its electric motors drive the rear wheels. It’s alot of fun and definitely adds to the drivability. The torque makes it very seamless and responsive in normal driving. Plus, the battery acts more like a capacitor, it charges and drains several times an hour in normal driving, so I can understand why its not plug in.
This is very hard to believe, so they are going to put this same engine in now the MR2, Celica, and now Supra? Yeah need more solid information then speculative info...
Let me thing, because Toyota hasn’t made one in a long time. Bimmer boys act like it’s the greatest i6 in the world when there have been tons of better engines out there years back capable of big power. They can. The current engine can easily go faster than that with a tune a couple of mods. 400hp sounds like too much stress on a small engine burning more oil and decreasing longevity. Plus the 4cl doesn't sound as good. They like to pump fake engine sounds through the speakers

@@beamer8907a lot harder than you'd think with the emissions standards. I know BMW makes engaging engines, but Toyota has the edge on reliability. I also can't imagine Toyota letting the car take a step backwards, in terms of performance.
I think a celica is doable by '26 since they can reuse Corolla-Prius chassis and parts. They could feasibly make a GR celica as well with this. It wouldnt need to be a new platform.
As a BMW owner, I was concerned with the partnership that brought back the Supra. I drove one and it was missing that Supra fun to drive experience I remembered from having a Supra back in the day…and I’m very experienced with BMW reliability. Looking forward to this new Supra.
Literally the opposite of my experience. My entire family has had Toyota cars and trucks since the 80’s including a Gen 2 Tacoma myself. When I got a MKV Supra 6MT last year it was honestly the most fun car I have ever owned. I look for excuses to drive it and take it out of the garage. Not sure if we drive the same MKV, but to each their own.
I’ve had a gte single turbo SC and an 800hp 2jz fd. I’ve driven stockish and bolt on mk4 turbo Supras after I got my a90. While my a90 has the typical catless dp e50 and tune, it’s so much more fun to drive and punchy compared to the old Supras. Literally made the mk4 feel like a boat
Though I'm excited to hear that Toyota may continue with a MK6 Supra, the thoughts of a turboed four cylinder with electrification may be a misstep, especially if a similar powertrain setup is rumored to be used in the upcoming Celica/MR2 duo. I enjoyed my MK4 Supra back in the days and I love the MK5 Supra that Gazoo Racing codeveloped with BMW as both models follow the turbo i6 RWD formula. What I'm really hoping from Toyota is either the 3 cylinder that's used in the GR Yaris and Corolla being built as the groundwork for an inline 6 variant for the next gen Supra or using a beefed up version of the upcoming inline six that Toyota is codeveloping with Mazda (IIRC).
in this day and age.... well put it this way,, a Lexus RX500h has a 2.4T hybrid with 370hp. its gearchange could be better, is mostly a FWD despite being E-AWD, the car itself is made for relaxing, n the whole thing weighs 4800lb. still could sprint to 60 in under 6sec. So power source isnt an issue for toyota. What IS an issue is a lightweight racing chassis, which they honestly dont have. hence why they shacked up with BMW in the first place: BMW has the chassis available.
I think it's going to be a Celica with the 2.0L and the 8GR for the Supra. For the body I think it will be a down market LC500 or the LC gets discontinued and the SC comes back. The Supra should be a model under the celica name plate again. Also think the GR86 should be discontinued to become the Celica.
Scrapping BMW powertrain? Man that’s the worst move they could make. The B58 and B48 are the most robust engines you can get today. B58 has crazy ceiling for power without many additional redundancy mods. Toyota is absolutely crazy to drop them.

Hey Kirk! This time you beat me to post this first ha ha … by the way Best Car Magazine is saying something a bit different about the Supra in their latest podcast (in Japanese) compared to what’s published in the magazine.

Really wish we were getting the starlet but I'm guessing that will be a kei class car. Also, if Lexus rebuilt the SC300/400 they really should redesign the 91'-00' body style with the RX front end. There's a guy who 3D printed his own bumper for his SC400 with the RX front bumper in mind and it looks like a SC concept car.
Well, if any of this is true… I’m keeping my MK5. To be clear, I would never purchase a BMW. However, without question, the B58 is a reliable engine that can make crazy power that makes close to 450-460 crank horsepower. My 6-speed manual made 403WHP on the sumo. My only gripe is the plastic valve cover and plastic coolers. If anyone thinks a 3JZ is a possibility… no way Toyota will ever create an iron closed deck block. The closest thing to those engines are the B58 and S58. The only possibility is the 3.3L Mazda I6. An I6 is a must for the Supra.

I would not be opposed to an advanced hybrid design vs a turbo engine. Hear me out. I’ve always been a turbo car fan, but after driving a new hybrid Camry, I had an epiphany. With a hybrid sports car you get best of both worlds of n/a and the instant torque of an electric car. With a hybrid design you have less heat, no turbo lag, and you get electric power instead of a turbo. Think of the Porsche hybrids. As an added benefit, you can go ev mode in neighborhoods and parking lots if desired. You can use the gas savings of hybrid car during normal driving or when you’re not feeling like spirited driving, or you can use the full power of the electric motor in conjunction with the gas engine and say screw the gas mileage. You have a faster car AND options to save on gas. Just my 2 cents.
If Toyota was smart, they would bring back modernized 2JZ forged internals with direct and Port injection that could also be retrofitted in older supras TRD crate option for custom applications. The super needs to be straight six turbo with an optional hybrid model.
@@antoniosmith197 yea. If they could figure out the issues with the Tundra V6 I think it could be a solid option. Or an aluminum version of the 2J. Lighter and maybe a bit higher rev limit
Traditionally the Soarer/SC version of the Supra has always had a longer wheel base, so that's possibly why a Lexus version of the Supra could have the space for four seats. Also if Toyota is planning this and doing it smart the Supra, IS and RC could all be under the same platform basically. They've been delaying going to the TNGA platform for the IS/RC for a while now, the IS/RC are still technically on the same platform that was introduced in 2005 of the IS, just obviously heavily modified.
We all forget the reason we still think about all the old Japanese tuner cars is because you could tune them. If it's a full toyota it needs a large aftermarket support to hit the ground running. Pricing of the cars will be the most important thing since now it'll be competing with the B58 and other well documented cars. Honestly, if the supra goes 4 cylinder you might as well buy a Honda or a fake AMG 4 cylinder.

Thanks Kirk and Best Car for the rumours. One question where are Toyota getting this Sports car chassis from, as they don’t have one currently especially for a hybrid.
No one hated that it had a blow engine. They hated that it wasn’t the s58. I know people complained it had a bmw code but the main thing people hated was the fact it made roughly the same power as the 2jz. Guaranteed if it made the 505 horse people would have praised it. The moral is if your gunna use another companies engine better pick the powerful one not the mid tier engine.
S58 is a bit too big to fit in a mk5 anyway because it's overall larger than a B58 so the mk5s front end would have to get redesigned to fit everything without issue.
Kirk, Arnold Schwarzenegger's cousins be damned! They wanted another inline 6 Supra and it was the only way it was going to happen. Toyota in house 6 cylinder engines are so bad they recently recalled 100,000 vehicles for issues that lead to complete engine failure. The BMW Supra will likely be the last Supra under 3,500lbs. Technology is heavy and batteries are heavier. Weight is the reason why the BMW M2 barely pulls away from the MKV Supra despite having 90 more horsepower. Performance cars really should be rated on power to weight ratio so people know when they're setting money on fire buying something obese.
Toyota could have built it, but they dont have the plant space or they didnt want to spend the money to build it. That Tundra failure is manufacturing, that engine along with NX engine has been tested a long time. They were waiting to build a new engine for LC and RC, and they have very high out put engine with higher thermal efficiency . It was just easier to outsource the parts from Bmw, and both engineering group did not see each other for more than 3 years. New Mr2 is coming along with celica, possiblity miata rival.
It's just company politics. Akio tried his damnedest for years to convince the rest of corporate to make cool sports cars. They simply would not budge because it's not profitable. Teaming up with other companies was the only way he could convince them to hemorage money into this sports car venture, because let's face it, corporate was right, and they arent making any money doing any of this. It's all a labor of love.
I'm not sure how I feel. Toyota has 3 GR cars in US: Corolla, Supra, and 86 and Supra with B58 seems to be the most reliable one. Corolla catching fire, and 86 having starvation (probably Subaru's fault). Also their drivetrains in Tundra and Tacoma have been less reliable than expected. If I'd have to get one today, I'd probably go with Lexus RC for reliability or GR Supra with B58 if I wanted the newest tech and best performance.
They need BMW because toyota Powertrains ans Transmission is way less reliable the B58 and ZF8 speed if they do this they will kill the Supra indirectly if they downsize just like Chevy did to the Camaro
4:32 why would they need to convert the FWD 8 speed into longitudinal 8 speed? The longitudinal version of that transmission in the GR Yaris/GR corolla came out first in the 2000s with the Lexus LS460. The "special" features of the 8 speed in the GR Yaris (which also have long existed for years, equipped in almost all FWD BMWs and Minis- it is not a brand new transmission just like the 6 speed manual in the GR Supra is also not a brand new transmission) have long existed in the longitudinal version- the 2008 IS-F.
They needed experience and access to the technology of modern sports cars for research, at that time they haven't done a sports car since the MRS, never mind a more powerful, more than 4 cylinder car like the Supra. They had the experience to make a 90s sports car, but they didn't have the experience to make a modern sports car
Tbh it was a good choice they did. Noting in toyos line up touches it in aftermarket support nor comes close to making the same amount of power with a handful of mods like it does.
I never thought I’d be seeing a Celica again in my life. Being that the ‘95 Celica was my first ever car, ima try and save up for one. It’ll be a full circle moment for me for sure

Lexus needs the exclusivity of the LFR. You regularly mention that Lexus just has hand me downs from Toyota and now you want them to share the LFR.
Just sharing a modified LFR platform will make it a vastly different car and price point of a Toyota version, while saving being the key point for R&D of a whole new platform with different drivetrain and suspension and dash display which are all just screens anyway. That’s how I can see them still making this, and the potential for a manual even better.

People keep telling me there are no ev mandates yet carmakers need to acomodate more and more electrification to comply. How is it not a mandate?
You still believe what people tell you? Or would you instead choose to believe your lying eyes?
It's semantics, technically they are no quotas for the percentages of EVs you have to sell (apart from in the UK), but the only way the automakers can hit the CO2 targets is to sell zero emission vehicles. im just curious how theyre gonna pull off the chassis for this car. powertrain really isnt much of an issue for toyota compared to a lightweight racing chassis... which they basically have none.

Toyota is absolutely going balls to the wall with their production. This is what it means to be the world’s richest auto manufacturer.

It didn’t sell as a 4 cylinder so i doubt theyll do it again
I think it's going to be a Celica with the 2.0L and the 8GR for the Supra. For the body I think it will be a down market LC500 or the LC gets discontinued and the SC comes back. The Supra should be a model under the celica name plate again. Also think the GR86 should be discontinued to become the Celica.

"I’m keeping my MK5. To be clear, I would never purchase a BMW."
You say that like it isn't a BMW.
@@Slythey Read the rest of the statement. It's obvious that this is the exception... a reliable BMW.
@@ErwinSchrodinger64 a reliable BMW is a relative statement that's meaningless in the big picture. My 2021 off the showroom floor went 2 years with Toyota doing nothing about oil consumption of 1 qt per 700 miles before I wound up dumping it.
This is super 👍👍👏👏more edgy, more angles…no curves anywhere! This Supra's new Design is a man's car…love the design from the Dodge Viper/Corvette owner…..the front is handsome..this has Corvette C7 vibes and Italian influences all over yet it's got its own unique look…the rear light is spot-on on From A80, A70..supra.. excellent job.. If this is 100% gonna look like.… Make it 2+2 similar to what Porsche 911 does so the wife says “YES” with kids and the long-term Supra survival is 2+2…2 seats are not for the masses…why limit the sales… Porsches did it.
A 4 cylinder only in the Supra would absolutely be its final demise. Damn i hope not.
4 turbo hybrid. I like it.
@@realtalk5931 I like it too. It's 2024, a totally adequate hi tech engine.
The only other option I can think of would be an all electric Supra? I think I would rather take the 4 cylinder turbo hybrid in that case lol.
the best supras had an inline 4 in it, they got them to put out 800hp with some upgrades with the 503e engine that came out if the celica
Toyota should add an all wheel drive option to the Supra
The B58 and B48 weren't "co developed" with Toyota, come on dude. Toyota looked it over and basically said yeah this is good.
Yes, a real Toyota Supra!!
If Toyota was smart, they would bring back modernized 2JZ forged internals with direct and Port injection that could also be retrofitted in older supras TRD crate option for custom applications. The super needs to be straight six turbo with an optional hybrid model.
If Toyota wanted to waste money on an obsolete engine, yeah that's what they'd do
If the next Supra isn’t a I-6 then it’s going to fall flat. No one thinks about an I-4 when they think Supra.
It's has to be an I6 or V6 the minimum
@@antoniosmith197 yea. If they could figure out the issues with the Tundra V6 I think it could be a solid option. Or an aluminum version of the 2J. Lighter and maybe a bit higher rev limit
@@christopherthompson9642 I'm pretty sure the Tundra V6 gets lower epa than the current Supra Inline 6, which would be an issue
I like how the MKV looks but don't like that they had BMW involved with it. especially since they have a twin turbo V6 in the Tundra.
First Supra ever to be completely Toyota? This thing is gonna suck.
Can’t they just use Mazda’s I6?
They aren't really performance oriented tbh.
There is no Supra if there is no inline 6..otherwise just let the legend go down respectfully..leave the Celica and MR2 with their new 4cyl turbo engine..don't do the same as Dodge did with the Charger, mustang with Mach E, not to mention what Mitsu did with the Eclipse...These corportates are killing every Brands Legends they see on the Brands list...GTR is coming in ev also or is it the Silva? It is better to leave them alone..just pick a new nameplate..let the Legends die as they were remembered.
Clearly never heard of the MK1 "Supras" clearly.. the only Supra's that was Six's was the MK2, MK3 and 4's, even then the Six's wasn't in their racing models.
I know There is the MK1..but so did the Skyline, it started with 4cyl..in those time Japan did not had any experience with bigger Engine, which the U.S. had with V8's..since the second generation they started with the I6 engines true and continued..in motorsport it did had the correct balance for corners..then yes, they used 4cyl instead to gain that balance..but then again..they did not had the experience with bigger engine and it was their mistake..they must have just accept their loss to the Skyline and move forward to bring another Supra mk5 then with a better platform but they killed that posibillity then till now we got the MK5..which also offered 4cyl but as we speak..has also been axed due to slow Sales..people bought more i6 Mk5's than the 4 cyl version..that only speaks volume that this 4cyl MK6 gonna be a failure..just let the Supra R.I.P. with honor..and stay with the upcomimg Celica, MR2 and GR86..also it won't make sense having a Supra with the same engine as the upcoming Celica and MR2..GR86 will have the 1.6 3 cyl @@jdproductions6147
Thanks Kirk and Best Car for the rumours. One question where are Toyota getting this Sports car chassis from, as they don’t have one currently especially for a hybrid.
Toyota doesn't know their buyers.
Gov doesn't know what people want. They override it with overly aggressive regs for fuel economy and emissions.
@@heh2k I agree
No one hated that it had a blow engine. They hated that it wasn’t the s58. I know people complained it had a bmw code but the main thing people hated was the fact it made roughly the same power as the 2jz. Guaranteed if it made the 505 horse people would have praised it. The moral is if your gunna use another companies engine better pick the powerful one not the mid tier engine.
BMW may not have given them the option for that engine though.
S58 is a bit too big to fit in a mk5 anyway because it's overall larger than a B58 so the mk5s front end would have to get redesigned to fit everything without issue.
B58 and s58 can make same power levels and actually you are wrong b58 currently is the fastest bmw motor as of now no s58 does that .
As long as its not a 4cyl. The Supra name should always carry a 6cyl… Otherwise they lost me at 4cyl
@@LuSt4boost 100%. If you wanna 4cyl get a Corolla.
Kirk, Arnold Schwarzenegger's cousins be damned! The Supra should be built in a Toyota factory not an Austrian shed. 😂Although I welcome each and every one of them, it is hard to comprehend the volume of new sports coupes coming from Toyota. It may not be a sports car but I want to hear more about the affordable GR Starlet hatch. 🤩Speaking of sporty 2 doors, what does "Best Car" have to say about the return of the 2 door Prado? 🤔
That Austrian shed builds the G-wagon for Mercedes. That’s a good Austrian shed, and it’s good quality.
@@caryg4638 It was a figure of speech.
They made the new tundra, sequoia , GX, LC250, 4 runner and Tacoma all in two years basically. They can possibly do this as well.
Toyota should have built all their sports cars in house, what a huge mistake
omfg your dumb. this car is going to be legendary Its so overbuilt its gonna make you cry when you see it. 400HP stock engine 100HP from the E motor. my god this is going to be the most powerful production 4 cylinder in history and imagine throwing mods on it my god! un open making 700+ HP can you imagine that!
They need BMW because toyota Powertrains ans Transmission is way less reliable the B58 and ZF8 speed if they do this they will kill the Supra indirectly if they downsize just like Chevy did to the Camaro
zf8 8hp is the best widely available transmission ever
I guess you’ve heard of the 2JZ?
@@mholmes9262 you know Toyota won't bring that back
4:32 why would they need to convert the FWD 8 speed into longitudinal 8 speed? The longitudinal version of that transmission in the GR Yaris/GR corolla came out first in the 2000s with the Lexus LS460.
The "special" features of the 8 speed in the GR Yaris (which also have long existed for years, equipped in almost all FWD BMWs and Minis- it is not a brand new transmission just like the 6 speed manual in the GR Supra is also not a brand new transmission) have long existed in the longitudinal version- the 2008 IS-F.
There is no reason to partner with bmw which has horrible quality.
Little early to be drunk
They making the Supra to small!!!!! Stop it!!! Make it bigger and have a targa top!!! Stop making it small!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the mk5 supra should've not been BMW-powered in the first place
They needed experience and access to the technology of modern sports cars for research, at that time they haven't done a sports car since the MRS, never mind a more powerful, more than 4 cylinder car like the Supra. They had the experience to make a 90s sports car, but they didn't have the experience to make a modern sports car
Exactly 💯. Idk what Toyota was thinking
Should’ve put a 2GR-FE in it
Supra never should of been BMW or any German product..needs to be straight Japan !
My son had a bmw m240i which had amazing performance, so I see no problem with keeping that in a supra.
I don't know why Honda can't join the party and share the tooling on a sports car.
As a GR Yaris owner I saw this is great. I couldn’t care less how many cylinders the engines have, just make good ICE sports cars and that’s all we need.
There’s a bit of GT-R, Alfa Romeo, and existing RC in speculative rendering.
If electric monitor is in back does that mean it could be standard AWD?
From a performance point of view this things looks sick. It'll be 400hp with torque fill from the hybrid motor. That will make it extremely fast.
