    I visited Jamestown in the early 60s when I worked as an engineer on board cargo ships of Clan Line, Glasgow. The company had the responsibility of delivering mail. Our company vessels stopped at James Town to and from South Africa from UK ports. From the ship one used the lifeboat to go ashore. I remember there was no jetty. One had to jump ashore while the lifeboat was rising and falling in the open Atlantic Ocean.
    In those days James Town did not have cars or fancy shops and cafes. A short stroll took one from one end to other end of the town. Fantastic Jacob’s Ladder took one to the top of the hill.
    I am so surprised that the video did not show the main attraction of St Helena; the house at the top of Jacob’s ladder where Napoleon Bonaparte was imprisoned and where he died. If he died of poisoning, many still believe, it happened here. From the house, one can see the Atlantic Ocean on a 360-degree view. This house is maintained as a museum where the personal belongings and clothing of the emperor was on display. It also had a description of how his body was carried to France on a French naval vessel.
    St Helena and Ascension Islands are on the sailing ship route, almost equidistant from Africa and South America. It was a stop for most sailing vessels. However, the powered ships take a direct route which bypasses St Hena. Nowadays only tourists visit St Helena.

      Yes, travel is somewhat limited, although, to be fair, it's now much improved to what it was pre-2017. Today we have a regular weekly flight from Johannesburg, South Africa which only takes about 4 hours flying time each way. Before the air service began in 2017 you would have had to take a 5-day voyage be ship from Cape Town to get here! The 5 days back! So the time-factor has certainly improved drastically.
      If you're ever planning a trip (for the chance to do some of our post box walks 😊) at any time, go to Travel St Helena: travelsthelena.com/

    a great idea, exceptionally well executed: well done! The range of accents is interesting: some young lasses had touches of Australian, some American and some... well, must be unique to St Helena! :)

    • @whatthesaintsdidnext
      @whatthesaintsdidnext  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks for viewing & the comment, @Banana11 👍 the accents stem from a combination of things - ancestry is a big one (English settlers, slaves from West Africa, Madagascar, Bengal and Asia), but then more recent cultural influences, especially movies and tv shows, and the increased travel opportunities in recent decades. We tend not to notice it much ourselves until someone from outside points it out 😊 The stronger Saint dialect is something we're also beginning to value and appreciate more as time goes on as part of what makes us unique.

    I was thinking what a peculiar tourist video until I read that it was produced for the 2022 Miss St Helena pageant. They all did very well, but I just had to look up who won. It was Aliyah Crowie. She starts at 6:35.

    • @whatthesaintsdidnext
      @whatthesaintsdidnext  9 місяців тому +1

      Hi Michael, thanks for checking out the video and your comment. 👍
      Yes, these were the 'Showreel' videos that were part of the 2022 pageant. We were the organisers for that event and the two previous. The aim was to design a round that showcased the contestants' ambassadorial credentials as well as providing ongoing benefit for St Helena as something of a legacy from the pageant.
      When we take into account how shy most of the ladies are/were, none of them had done anything like this before and that they all chose their own topic & concept, wrote the first draft of the scripts, then had one attempt each to do the shoot over approx 2 hours, it's actually quite an impressive result by them 😊
      We also posted a blog about the night's pageant: whatthesaintsdidnext.com/aliyah-crowie-wins-miss-st-helena-2022-show-reel-edition/

    Hi there. Great videos, ladies. I'm hoping to visit your lovely island some day. I live just down the road in Cape Town😏 Back in the 80s and 90s i used to hear Radio St Helena on my shortwave radio and communicated by post with Tony Leo who was the station manager.

      Radio St Helena was replaced by South Atlantic Media Services (SAMS) at the end of 2012. Tony had long left Radio St Helena by that point, however, he still presents shows sometimes on Saint FM, the other radio station on St Helena.

The direct flights from UK finished in March, after 2 years, there are no plans (not that we're aware of) to do this again. It’s certainly a fascinating place. What kind of food stuffs are grown there. Do you have local farming etc and is there a source of fresh water. ?

    • @whatthesaintsdidnext
      @whatthesaintsdidnext  Рік тому +1

      Hi Samson, thanks for checking out the video and your feedback 👍Most foodstuff is imported, however, there is a local farming industry that supplies a wide range of fresh vegetables, including potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, beans, pumpkin, aubergine, courgettes, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, bananas (amazing bananas), corn (sometimes), cauliflower, cucumber...
      There are shortages from time to time, as you would expect on such a small island, and supply can be impacted severely by drought or pests etc. But overall, supply has generally been improving as farmers have been investing more into their operations.
      The island's fresh water comes from springs, mostly fed from run-off from the island's central peaks.

    Thank you lovely young ladies. You have a beautiful and rich history in your island. Seeing your lovely faces some are almost similar to ours in the Pacific. We were once a colony of Spain and we knew for a fact Magellan and some of his men were from Portugal. Our very first migrants were also African descents million years ago. They must have traveled by foot from Africa. We are a melting pot of the east and the west in the Pacific. I wonder if they must have traded some of our ancestors to yours? Hope someday I can visit St. Helena 🇸🇭...From another Saint town, San Rafael, Iloilo, Philippines 🇵🇭.

      Greetings San Rafael 😊 just looked up your beautiful municipality landscape on UA-cam, looks similar in many parts to our own St Helena.
      Our population on St Helena is about a third of yours but we seem to share a similar history in many ways. We also describe our identity as emerging from a 'melting pot' of travellers, ours from those making passage up and down and across the Atlantic!
      Hope you get to visit us one day, and hope we also get to experience the Philippines one day also 👍

      Thank you lovely Ladies. There was a Manila Galeon trade before going to Acapulco. You mentioned some of your Ancestors were Asians too? Most likely they came from our islands in the Philippines. Our town San Rafael is just one of the many towns of Iloilo City. We have Hispanic, Americans, Pacific, Asian heritage. We have many ancestral houses in the city but my town is in the mountain side like yours. You have a rich history and a beautiful islands. Hope someday you can visit ours too especially Boracay island. God bless Dear.

      Hi there, thanks for checking out the video and the comment.
      Yes, you are correct, there is a history.
      St Helenians (Saints) are predominantly descendants of English settlers, enslaved people from West Africa, Madagascar, Bengal and Asia, and Chinese indentured workers.
      In more recent years, the population is seeing new people coming to work and settling from countries in Africa, Europe and one or two from the US and other places.
      But to your point, yes, when we have been in Cape Town ourselves we are also always struck by the similarities in the people there and on St Helena.
      Cheers

      Hey Tommy, thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video.
      Yes, understand about not being too connected. It's always the challenge to develop without losing identity, something we worry about ourselves.
      We have fish & chips, although not quite in the way you would know it in the UK. Fried fish and chips (we tend to call them French fries) is more of a thing here. Fish in batter is also made, but perhaps not as popular. Personally we love fried conger 😊
      Funny you should mention the green shirt 💖 it is available from our Capricorn Studios online shop - just be sure to read the shipping notes as the mail is slow at the moment. All the best 👍👍

      We do recognise there are plenty of other aspects of St Helena that we could produce videos about that people would find interesting, and will add pubs to our list and try to fit it in when we have time 😊

      Hi Cybrman, yes it does 👍
      The government's Health Directorate manages a 28-bed General Hospital in Jamestown. Included in the facilities is a two-bed intensive care unit, an operating theatre, a radiology suite with CT-Scan, X-ray, Mammography and Ultrasound facilities. There are four outpatient clinic sites: one located in Jamestown, and three other outlying districts. Dental and Pharmacy Services with dispensing facility is also located within the hospital complex.
      Non-prescription medications are on sale from a range of the larger supermarkets.

      Napoleon died on St Helena in 1821 where he was entombed and remained until 1840, when his body was removed to France where it now rests in Les Invalides, Paris.
      His empty Tomb on St Helena is, today, a very popular tourist attraction, as is Longwood House, his last residence. 😊

    I understand the ship from Cape Town no longer goes there. How do you guys get big container goods shipped there now. And what happened during covid quarantine? And what on earth happens when the plane can't land?

    • @whatthesaintsdidnext
      @whatthesaintsdidnext  Рік тому +1

      Hi Samkelo, you're right, the RMS St Helena which carried all the island's passengers and cargo, went offline in 2018 ua-cam.com/video/uh90iTgLoGs/v-deo.html
      Once air travel became the primary method of transportation for people, a small cargo vessel was contracted to meet the island's cargo demands. From April 2017 to February 2023, this vessel was the MV Helena, a 112m general cargo ship, with a capacity to carry approx 6,900 tonnes.
      The MV Helena served the island throughout Covid 19. Strict protocols kept crew isolated from stevedores discharging the cargo.
      Since the MV Helena finished, a temporary arrangement is in place for a year, until a more long-term solution can be implemented. That ship currently serving the island's cargo requirements in the 100.6m long 'Maria Da Paz' with a capacity of 378 containers (20ft).
      With regards the plane landing - a weather forecaster based at St Helena Airport keeps a close eye on conditions at St Helena and is in close contact with the aircraft throughout the flight. If conditions are deemed unsuitable, which usually means low cloud cover, then the flight is postponed a day or two. We've made a detailed film about this, in partnership with the airport, which you can see here: ua-cam.com/video/MWfCh_S0_ow/v-deo.html
      Hope that helps 😊
      Thanks for watching the video. Cheers.

      Our accents do cause great interest with visitors. It's no one thing really, rather a blend of influences down the years, including Saints travelling and working abroad, new people coming to St Helena and modern day media. The only spoken language is English, however, a strong local Saint dialect can be quite difficult for outsiders to understand. All part of the charm 😊

    A well produced video which clearly sets out the '12 Great Reasons' - the producer and the presenters are to be congratulate on this video.. The real question posed is however this - Would I travel circa 6,000 miles to visit the island to see the '12 Great Reasons'? Reluctantly the answer for me, at least is, no. Whilst the '12 Great Reasons' are in themselves interesting, they are not in themselves sufficient for me to expend significant funds (and time) to visit to the island - the world is a big place with much more to see and experience.

    • @whatthesaintsdidnext
      @whatthesaintsdidnext  2 роки тому

      Hi Richard, thanks so much for your feedback, much appreciated 👍 Yes, unfortunately the costs of travel to St Helena, compared to the huge array of lower priced options, continues to be a big negative for many people considering a holiday destination. Even here on the island, travel costs severely limits a large portion of our own people the opportunities to travel and experience the outside world. 😞
      But thankfully the numbers we would like to see visiting are not huge, so hopefully (now the island is opening up again following the lifting of Covid quarantine restrictions) we will soon see a return to 2019 numbers, which would be very welcome.
      Thanks again, best wishes from St Helena, enjoy your travels 😊

    The speakers are all St. Helena natives? I thought they were Maoris at first, but then I got to thinking...maybe this is how St. Helena natives look and speak. All of these isolated British Oversees Territories have interesting accents...like Pitcairn islands.

      Hi T Diddle, thanks for the comment 👍yes, all of the presenters are Saints.
      There are different 'strengths' of local accent across the island, often influenced by age and exposure to travel 😊
      Another of our videos that's a good example of local accents is this Cloud Forest film: ua-cam.com/video/QoK5v7iAe2I/v-deo.html
