The Mystery Behind the Babylonian City That First Embraced Witchcraft
The story of Harut and Marut has various versions, and one famous version describes the two as angels sent by God to descend to the city of Babylon. At that time, the city of Babylon was hit by anxiety and shirk due to the rampant practice of magic. The city, ruled by King Nebuchadnezzar, was in a state of chaos, and magic had caused disease and even sparked divorce between husband and wife.
The spread of magic in the city of Babylon began when King Nebuchadnezzar captured the Jews after attacking Palestine. After arriving in Babylon, the Jewish captives began to practice magic and made large circles as symbols of magic, which frightened the local population. This is when Harut and Marut were sent to teach magic to the people of Babylon. However, their aim is not to do evil, but to explain the nature of magic to the public.
These angels carried out their duties by teaching the Babylonian people about magic. They also reminded local residents not to misuse the magic they learned to commit shirk and disobey Allah SWT. Harut and Marut explained, "Indeed, we are only a test for all of you. So, therefore, do not disbelieve."
And they followed what the devils read during Solomon's reign (and they said that Solomon worked magic), even though Solomon was not an infidel (did not work magic), only the devils were disbelievers (worked magic). They taught magic to humans and what was revealed to two angels in the land of Babylon, namely Harut and Marut, while neither of them taught (anything) to anyone before saying: Verily, we are only a test (for you), so do not disbelieve. So they learned from the two angels that by means of magic, they could divorce a (husband) and his wife. And they (magicians) do not harm anyone with their magic, except with Allah's permission. And they learn something that does not harm them and does not benefit them. For their sake, indeed they have believed that whoever exchanges it (the Book of Allah) for magic, he will not gain in the afterlife, and it would be very evil for them to sell themselves for magic, if they knew. (QS. Al-Baqarah 2:102)
