So many happy memories of wandering through the International Marketplace. I have been visiting it since the early 60s. Now, thanks to this video, I can visit it anytime!!! Sad to see it go the way of re-development.
My favorite place when I was in the Navy 1972............. took the bus here for a cool drink and the sights and sounds every Sunday...... then the Hula show at the Ala Moana center and back home. This was a great place......... today.......... crapo. BAH HUMBUG.
So So so so so sad.. My entire childhood was blessed with frequent travel to Waikiki due to my family in the airline and travel business, The old international marketplace was an absolute gem and just part of the experience, the little kiosks ran by people who barely knew English, the old tropical trees and birds and noises of insects chirping, walking and winding your way back toward the food court with old plastic chairs, the smell, the humidity I will never forget. This is an absolute shame and I nearly cry knowing I will never be able to experience that again

Me too! This was a blessed sacred tree surrounded by real people and visited by numerous angels... I used to sit in a pool where you had to stumble in and ask people who found their way to that sacred space if I could wash their feet sign of the fish around my neck (my own idea of Christianity) I wasn't the only evangelist God sent there then. There were many honest sadhus who were respected in Hawaiian culture as kamaaina thanks for sharing!
OMG!!!!!! I cannot believe they closed down this market. I visited Honolulu in Sept. 2013 and loved going to this market. We went at least 3 times. We are going back in Sept. 2015 and was shocked to hear it had closed down. It was always full of tourists..... What were the powers that be, thinking!!!!
This video is great, the way I remember the International Market Place. I have been visiting Hawaii since 1979 and the Market Place was always the number 1 place I would always go to. The vendor's were always so friendly, I always bought a lot of stuff from the stalls, it had the atmosphere of Hawaii. Now with the redevelopment it is so cold and unfriendly. A major part of Hawaii has been taken away. 😪

I remember in the 70's when the Marketplace didn't reach all the way to Kuhio. The shops in the permanent buildings on either side of the Banyan Tree were all high-mid to high end art galleries. The tourist crap was kept at a minimum. The walkways were very wide, not crammed up with kiosks and carts. Loved that Marketplace.
I commented on this video years ago. My opinion has not changed. I can shop for high end merchandise where I come from My wife and I don't come to Waikiki for that. We used to come for the "vibe"....anyone remember that? It sadly is being eradicated. That being said, Waikiki is one of my favourite places in the world.
I heard the same thing about the international market place they will be tearing it down by the end of 2013. To put up a MALL!!! Very sad there are multiple malls already on the island. Why do they need another one? I got to see if for my final time this year. I love going there cause you can get things you cant get any where else. Very sad. Prob will never go back to oahu seeing that it becoming so modern and hawaii traditions are being replaced. GREAT VIDEO!!!

I loved this place: Melveen Leed on Saturdays, free hula show on Tuesday ? and Fattey's in a corner out back. The new place is soulless.

My first job was at the ABC Store. I was just 18 yo... I remember all the girls in the marketplace use to like me... good times! 👍 lol
