One of the recurring themes in this show is that the characters of various backgrounds all have sympathy for their own people, but everyone else is just whining. The scene in this episode at Hesh's horse farm is one of the best. @@warlordofbritannia It shows Hesh is just as hypocritical as the guys in the mafia. Just like the Italians here are complaining about anti-Italian discrimination and disregarding the plights of others, Hesh is (rightfully) complaining about antisemitism. But then he uses that to disregard discrimination against Native Americans. Later in another episode, we see Hesh try to hide behind antisemitism to cover up how he exploited black musicians and contributed to anti-black racism.
      The Sopranos shows this mindset of how people who only look out for themselves and their group cause problems for others. The Sicilian Mafia aren't noble soldiers fighting an eternal war. They're the scum who terrorize the nearby community while complaining about being attacked.

    I think Furio offers a good viewpoint. As Americans we tend to see the land where our forefathers came from as this homogeneous culture where everyone is the same. Pan-African, pan-italian, pan-german, etc. In reality, these countries are broken up into regions that don't always get along with each other. Then again, other countries see the United States in the same way. They see all Americans as being the same and can't see the variations in like California versus the south, etc

    I find it interesting how the actual reason Columbus Day became nationalized as a holiday is very rarely discussed or known, even among Italian-Americans. The 1891 New Orleans lynchings was the largest mass lynching in American history and it targeted Italian-Americans. Much like the horrific killing of George Floyd shocked America into making Juneteenth a national holiday, the mass lynching horrified President Harrison who then nationalized the Columbus Day celebrations.
    Times change and maybe Columbus no longer is a man modern society want to honor, but I don't think we should discard celebrating Italian-Americans and the struggles they've had in this country. Maybe that means renaming it 'Italian-American Heritage Day' or something.

    • @GhostSal
      @GhostSal Рік тому

      What you said is true but the reason they gave Columbus Day was to try and appease the Italian gøvernment. After the lynchíngs Italy was seriously debating sending its Navy to retalíate and let’s not forget the U.S. wasn’t the superpower it is today. Italy demanded the US hold people accountable for the lynchíngs but the US never did. Instead the US gave Italians Columbus Day.
