Upon freeing them, Bilbo helps the Dwarves to escape by using empty wine barrels, which are sent floating down the river. Along the way, they are ambushed by Bolg and his Orc party, while the elves pursue the Dwarves to halt their escape. In the ensuing chaos, Kili is shot wounded by a poisoned Morgul arrow while attempting to raise the portcullis barring the passage to the river. Legolas and Tauriel are forced to halt their pursuit of the Dwarves in order to end the Orc onslaught, allowing the Dwarves and Bilbo to escape.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug premiered on 2 December 2013 in Los Angeles and was released internationally on 11 December 2013 in both conventional and IMAX theatres. The film received mostly positive reviews and has grossed over $958 million at the worldwide box office, surpassing both The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of 2013 and the 34th highest-grossing film of all time.

The Bombur Barrel scene is a prime example of an unintentional tactical brilliancy that truly is a once in a lifetime experience.
Remember the whole theatre was cheering and laughing of the Bombur Barrel scene
Jar Jar Binks during the Battle of Naboo would disagree.
@@TonyCastle82 Interesting. Mine was cringing in disbelief. It was really taking everyone out of the scene with how suddenly cartoonish it was
Kinda reminds me of Jack Sparrow
That Legolas standing, walking, or balancing on the dwarves head's as they're in barrels is another outstanding action moment from him.
Not sure why they chose to take such an epic character and turn him into a cartoon, but I'm glad at least one person enjoyed it
@@thatiowan3581I mean to be fair he did similar stuff in the LOTR trilogy so it’s not surprising.
And people still say Aragorn has chance to win against Legolas? Maybe Aragorn was superior in books but I don't care. Peter Jackson thought logically what an elf with thousands of years could do. Tolkien didn't write much about Legolas as he wasn't main character of his novel. Whatever I like movie depiction rather than the book.
common legolas w
It was nice to see Bombur have a little moment of glory.
4:15 Thorin saved Legolas' life, plain and simple. They never talk about this but it's the reason Legolas helps Thorin against Azog in the third movie
Exactly
They also both do it by chucking a sword into the enemy.
@@JurassicWarz.124 right as the direct beneficiary is about to get brained. Really, the only difference is Legolas doesn't see the orc, whereas Thorin does.
I honestly never realized that Legolas even noticed until I rewatched and saw the look they give each other at the end, that’s actually really cool
Legolas and Tauriel fought 95% of the enemy, while the dwarves mostly rode the river rapids.
If anything, ALL the dwarves present owed their lives to the elves.
Whenever Elves and Dwarves help each other, it's always a bad day for the Orcs.
3:22 Bombur enters god mode.
Bombur is one of my favourite dwarves 😂 a real mvp
@Relinquished Reincarnated Oops, my bad. Lemme fix that.
"Do a barrel roll"
Bombur went wooden golem mode
"When there is no food in the rapid waters, and dying means never eating again, he rolls, he fights, he lives to continue.
Not just for his comrades or his life, but for another morsel of food.
Never roll a plump dwarf, for he will roll you if you dare."
- The Hobbit, probably
Side note: That whole scene (as cheese as action movies could be) was one of my top five favourite parts of the whole trilogy. It was filmed and choreographed so well! :D
This entire scene is ridiculous, and yet at the same time quite enjoyable to watch. It might not have been the most respectful of the tone of the original book, but I enjoyed it greatly.
It has good choreography and some really cool moments - like pinning an Orc to a tree with a thrown axe.
Plus the absolutely ridiculous scene rolling the barrel across land, rolling over 10+ Orcs, then fighting with the barrel still attached.
I think it kind of fits. I mean, this trilogy add a lot of stuff to made a trilogy out of 1 book. But even the hobbit is an amazing book, is like the most "relaxed or closer to child" of all stories of Tolkien
It is the spirit of the book in that scene. What some people still kept forgetting is the Hobbit movie was announced with additional contents from Appendice of LOTR from day one. Let remind the movie was intended for mass audience and the Hobbit is currently the only live adaptation fulfilling the last task JRR Tolkien rewriting the book before his passing.
Kili’s brief look of utter disbelief as he realizes Legolas and Tauriel are actually helping them (or at least, not actively trying to kill then) is PRICELESS.
3:07 imagine being an orc training all your life to be loyal and serve your leader with great pride and morale just to die from a fat guy in a barrel
My reaction as a spirit would be ಠ_ಠ
@@ryderTheHedgehog2004 how would u feel if u were one of the orcs that got squished by the barrel rolling down 😂
@@UnfunnyDaffenDales98775 same reaction ಠ_ಠ
I remember that part with the rolling barrel made everyone in the theater laugh!
1:27: Alright, since we’re doing a potentially bone-breaking stunt for this movie, everybody grab a GoPro.
Bro! Legolas is such a badass.
Bro Bombur was getting that Barrel Blast Combo
3:04 - This bit puts the "Bomb" in "Bombur".
absolutely epic scene, I could rewatch it mutliple times
This wasn't in the book
@@MrISkaterwhich is what makes it so much better
Nobody cares stop cry
3:54 that wasn't necessary... Legolas was pushing here. 😂
3:21 And then I started blasting!
legolas' eyes are so blue he looks like a fucking white walker
LMAO
Nah, he looks a bit more like a Targaryen to me.
To be fair the gamma seems to be jacked (possibly to avoid copyright strike)
So dumb, but so cool and well choreographed
The neverending supply of arrows Legolas has is a "boat in the bottle" type of mystery.
3:05 that spears plot armor is thick.
The fat dwarf scene is epic. Lol
This entire scene was incredible. So action packed, stunningly beautiful & fun to watch.
Living up to the Lord of the Rings is an impossible task. The Hobbit isn’t as good of course but it’s unfair to compare them even though they are directly related. I enjoyed the trilogy even though it had some artistic license & had flaws. It’s still a fun journey & quite a spectacle.
peter jackson is genius
La música también es una joya
When WB is the new publisher after buying New Cinema Line and think only profit...
@@Tippotipoyeah it baffles me that Jackson wanted only 2 parts and the same amount of time he was given to make the trilogy, so he could give it the love and quality it deserved, but the studio was like ‘hell no. We don’t care you’ve already made millions for this IP, you’re dragging it to 3. You’re not getting even a fraction of the time you’ve asked for and you’re shoehorning in a random, unearned romance. Take it or leave it’ like?????
It's high fantasy but you got to love a ridiculous but awesome adventure movie action scene
Can we all appreciate the fact that most of the Orcs here, besides Bolg, are actors in full prosthetic makeup? 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Whenever I watch this scene, I wonder if a GoPro was used at 01:45 for a split second.
3:49 What's funny is that Legolas could've stood on the barrels, their shoulders, or some place else. He just chose to stand on their heads.
2:42 lmao
3:06 had me and my brother laughing so hard in the theater, good times
4:05 When Legolas crosses by stepping on the dwarves' heads 😂😂😂😂😂
This scene was awesome in cinema. Loved the musical score as well
This is the worst and best scene all at the same time! I loved it!
Worst?
@@D4RK_KNIGHT_788 It’s just so goofy but yet so entertaining it has me torn.
@@JurassicWarz.124 it is very goofy but so are a lot of things in the universe to be honest, still like you said, throughly entertaining non the less
Gotta love the GoPro scenes
That Thorin saves Legolas is pretty awesome. He had no real reason to, but did it anyway
Bombur: they see me rollin' , they hatin'
Bombur heard the phrase "do a barrel roll" and managed to apply it in combat, what a legend
May the laws of physics be ever in your favor...
i amaze, how directors or stunt cordinators imagine that scenes in their head before shoot.
Its just fabulous.
People in this world are so brilliant.
You’ve got to be impressed with Bilbo holding onto the outside of the barrel through the entire entire river journey
I love how legolas steps on their heads like that when he's so light he can literally walk on snow
I don’t see how people hate on the Hobbit it’s a good trilogy and imo yes there are some noticeable problems with the CGI but that fantasy take on the CGI wasn’t that bad Peter Jackson cooked in both trilogies imo
i think this is one of the best scene ,excellent taken superb
In my opinion, this is a pretty good depiction of what happened in the book. Bilbo did not get captured by the elves, and did help them escape. And in my opinion, this is a genius plan set up by the one and only Bilbo Baggins. The elves were not as involved in the book, but that feels like a mythologically accurate representation of elves.
I thought orcs were supposed to be hiding during daylight. That was a big deal in Lord of the Rings when Saruman created a hybrid breed of Uruk-hai that could travel in daylight.
Orcs from Gundabad are more tolerant towards sunlight compared to the other breeds.
yeah. In hobbit books this action never happened.Even when the battle happened the sky covered with cloud.
Even no orcs in the book.
The antagonist are goblins from the misty mountain who caught the dwarves.
Those go-pro scenes are my 13th reason
I knew about Legolas throwing Orcrist to both save Thorin’s life as well as to give him back the sword during the Battle of Five Armies, but I had forgotten that Thorin made the choice to save Legolas first during this battle.
It’s honestly a great choice in both films, and really gives Legolas an amazing character arc, as he starts questioning his people’s xenophobia and isolationism (“I cannot go back”) to the point of literally having a Dwarf as his BFF sixty years later.
Given that “a hundred years is a blink of an eye for an elf,” that’s actually pretty impressive.
I just love the barrel out of water part so much lol
3:22 sad we didn't see Gimli do some highlight moves in LOTR.
A very beautiful and everlasting moment happened between thorin and legolas when thorin saved him from the orc
I lost so many brain cells watching this 😂
Legolas is making it effortless 😑
the BEST part of whole the movie!!!
One of many, but a personal favourite as well! :D
It wasn't in the book
@@MrISkaterwe do not care
0:47 Hope Van Dyne aka Wasp before Ant Man.
Great scene where the elf does everything he can by putting his own life in danger to help the dwarves get away from all the slaughter and, just when theyre about to escape the dwarf saves the man that just put his life in danger for him by preventing his death. I like to think that at the end when theyre looking at eachother, the dwarf said with his eyes 'hey thank you man, i will never forget this and dont think that me just saving your life is a repayment, i'll see you soon my friend' while the elf thinks 'youre all worth it and just hang in there outside and stay strong until i manage to hopefuly see you again. Stay safe.'
Ahh good old fantasy movies, where a 40 yr old could dream and picture a fictive world
2:52 Cut the log!
Legolas must be the most relentless dude in the whole LOTR saga
the dwarves are like ants when it comes to teamwork
That gopro bit ooof that was rough
Legolas has to be the most graceful swordsman/fighter
This scene was so fun
Legolas vs Army of Orcs
3:49 best scene starts here
legolas got a face like T1000 at the end there
Bombur god mode is like Legolas in ROTK moment. So badass 🤣
Thank you.
Epic fight
봄부르 3편에서도 그렇고 걍 존나 잘싸움ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
Watching The Hobbit is one of those follow up moments in history leading up to where The Lord of the Rings takes place.
The orcs are too big. Tolkien made it quite clear that Azog and Bolg were only about five foot tall.
Looks Like The Law And Order To Vampire Diaries Universe Should’ve Been.
Those buckets would have sank in the first minute!!!!! Come on now😮
Terbaik 💪💪💪💪🙏
half these shots could be cut out and only make things better
All the fighting sequences of Legolas and Tauriel look like Jackie Chan choreograhed them.
1:20 theres no reason that orc should not have managed to kill the she-elf
Bruh tell me the first person portions they stuck in didn't just look like they dropped a GoPro in the water. 🤣
Equivalent to using shaders on Minecraft
tiny bit heavy on the saturation there
This Evironment is same with Peter Jackson's King Kong Game Environment chapter Rappid.
I'm here to watch Bombur fight ❤️
I just realised that Legolas is using Thorin's elvish sword
2:46 Geez, what a headache
i dont think its actually 4k i thibk it is like 1080p but the contrast it high so it looks better
Dude--- theres no orc attack at the elf king's palace before the go out the barrels! AND theyre sealed in the barrels.
Does anyone know what the intro music to this video is called? Is this a different arrangement of Feast of starlight that’s not in the movie ?
The evles are kicking the orcs ass😮💀
This scene is a masterclass in everything that's wrong with modern cinema.
Just say you hate fun. This scene is awesome
Joyless mf's be like
Wouldn't consider this "cinema" but I agree the mixture of this level of animation and real acting defeats the purpose of live action mastery in action scenes
Could you turn your blue brightness filter off?!
Are you using a blue ray player ? How do you get hdr ? Please tell me?
Where was all this from legolas in the original trilogy
Thorin saves Legolas which Legolas returns to him in battle of the five armies even though thranduil is thorins foe😊
orc ambush why
Bombur is a killer if you put him in a barrel!!!!
The vfx is outdated😅
Well it would be seeing as the film is almost 12 years old
@@D4RK_KNIGHT_788 Not to mention it wasn’t all that great to begin with. A lot of the cgi looked rushed back then.
@@lesley1204 It really isn’t as bad as some people make it out in my opinion, yes it looks funky at times but many act like it makes the films unwatchable which is far from true
Dwarves > Eru Llúvatar
Stormtrooper orcs, bad writing
Maybe I could kill 1 or 2 with an arrow or sword but to jump straight back into that moving barrel… nah, I’ll leave it to them.
legolas❤❤❤❤
Here ugly guys are bad guys. In real life, anything goes.
This is probably the worst CGI ive ever seen in my entire life
Where they jumped the shark... or stood on dwarf.... so bad... so cheesy...
Bros allergic to fun, it was epic not cheesy, your prob the same person who laughs at jokes in MCU films lol
