Good stuff. This is something not many people capture!
+MrAviation101 thanks Josh!
I have said in the past that you are quite the most organised pilot in the world Jon and I am soo right, I used to just draw a line on the map from A To B and break right or left when I thought something looked a bit dodgy and when I was past it get back on track!! Awesome and so educational mate, can't wait for the next episode.
Thanks David.
Absolutely agree with you David. People, these days simply plot skydeamon and fly the route. Very good to see Jon doing it in traditional (and correct) way.
I don't think that I've ever seen someone use a number of GoPros and screen recording this way. Clever. Looks like a fair bit of effort in editing too.
Cheers Rory.
The Flying Reporter What struck me is that the three GoPros aren’t “visible” despite being in plain sight, and that the barrel distortion goes pretty much unnoticed.
You did kind of give the game away toward the end when you included a shot of you holding one of the GoPros :)
If I have one criticism, it’s that the shots of the paper map are pretty soft, which would appear to be the result of hand holding the camera.
But hey, I’m impressed. You’re showing your expertise as a video journalist, and I’ve just learned a couple of things :)
Yes, they were a bit soft...it's sorted for the rest of the series.
Thanks for all the time and effort as always Jon. Nice video. Look forward to the next.
My pleasure.
This was very informative and professional, Love it! Can't wait to do some hour building!
Brings it all back what we were taught and maybe take for granted and that more time should be applied when planning a route - thank you
Thanks for watching william.
Sweet this is great John! Can’t wait for the rest of the series!
Cheers Felix.
This is great! Thank you for your efforts and sharing your knowledge.
Pleasure.
Hi Jon. I’ve been looking forward to the flight planning series, so I’m looking forward to watching the next video. I’ve enjoyed all your other videos as well. Keep up the good work and stay safe. All the best!
Cheers Simon.
Absouletly brilliant Jon! Great insight for us undergoing training already. Thank you so much and looking forward to the rest of the series :)
Thanks John. Good luck with the rest of your training.
Huge fan of this new serie!
Cool, good news.
Excellent start to the series Jon. Looking forward to the rest and to see how another pilot prepares . See what tips I can pickup along the way.
Thanks for watching!
Great new series. Already looking forward to the next one.
I am only a flight sim pilot, but use the CAA charts to plot my routes and also do a PLOG.
Very interesting to see how you do things, Jon.
Thanks for the support Darren.
Fantastic stuff. Well done.
Thanks Mark.
Definitely living up to your "Flying Reporter" moniker - another really enjoyable and informative video. It's only when you try to document it that you really realise how much work actually goes into planning a route !! It's amazing how much easier a new flight is when you've flown the route and radio calls from the comfort of your couch first !!
It's obviously a much quicker process in real life. Explaining it like this makes it look like a bit of a rigmarole.
True, but we I think we do so much "virtual" flying as pilots that we don't realise that it adds to the overall planning time. I have much less airspace to contend with normally but my process is quite similar to yours. I'll be interested to see the upcoming episodes.
This is really well done, as usual. And not just well produced, but also really thoughtful. Your well developed skill at storytelling comes through on these videos.
I appreciate that, thank you.
Waited from the moment you mentioned you where doing these . Thanks a million Jon. Can't wait to next Sat :-)
Cheers JP.
As a training airline pilot all i can say is that your videos are just fantastic¡
Cheers mate.
Great video Jon as always. They always make me grateful that I get to fly in the US lol. Looking forward to the next one in this series!
Thanks Joshua.
Looks like a good series to watch. I plan my flights in a similar way. You have to in congested areas. Not so much on a local flight where I know the route is pretty much a straight shot. I'm familiar with where I can land in the event of an emergency.
This was very interesting, and a subject that have not seen covered by the YT aviation community - Thanks & thumbs up from me :)
Cheers John.
Thank you!
Thank you for watching.
Just a suggestion for marking charts. Use colored, transparent "highlighter" tape, and draw your black lines on that. You'll be able to see through the tape, and in flight can quickly see your route without hunting for it. Works great, and the tape is easily removed.
Thanks for all the hard work on your videos!
Good tip John, might just look into that.
That's a great idea! Just ordered a roll - let's see how well that works :)
Thank you for doing this ....
My pleasure.
Brilliant intro to how you prepare, I'm on the verge of starting my cross countries in my LAPL training so very interesting for me to see how you do it all.
Cool. Good luck with the training.
Excellent mini series 👌👌
Thank you.
Fantastic Jon, I have been out of the "saddle" for 10 years but back on it at Goodwood this year. Its amazing to see Skydemon etc and how its made the Nav and Planning so much easier - backed up by the same plotted onto the half mil map of course. Great stuff and looking forward to the next one. Will look at your change to Paypal and put some hard earned your way to help support - not only great to watch but brilliantly educational especially after not having flown for 10 years. (although i now need to learn to work a G1000 in a Cessna). Bravo!
Appreciate that Julian. G1000 lucky boy!
You are welcome Jon, although I'm sure for a new PPL student it will take longer to learn how to use the G1000 than it will to fly the aeroplane :-)
Hi Jon - very nice video and very insightful. I'm progressing OK but still some way to go before navigating. January hasn't been very good around Wellesbourne. Two lessons cancelled this past week alone. Anyhow - thanks again, and take care. All the best. Steven.
Cheers Steven. Hope you get flying soon. We've all be struggling this winter.
Always interesting how other people do things.
Yeah....I'm sure I do things quite differently from others!
In my day we didn't have iPads or Skydemon, so it's quite interesting to see how you use that alongside the traditional methods of flight planning.
Wow awesome vide
Thanks.
Great video Jon, hope you actually get to fly it!
Thanks Ben. I hope so too!
Good one Jon. You have put a lot of work into episode one, both in terms of great flying related content but also careful and creative editing which has worked brilliantly. Looking forward to the rest of the series. PM me if you want another flying meet up at some point. (Editing my next weeks video which gave me a bit of a scare when the ASI did not budge off the stops yesterday!)
Hi Tim, thanks. Oh dear....I'd be interested to know what happened there! Will definitely meet up again for a flight.
Excellent video, very informative and enjoyable to watch, one question though; do you live in Victor Meldrews House?
Great video Jon, extremely helpful series for a student like me! I always recommend your video's to my instructors & other students. Why not fly into Bristol? it has a great cafe & friendly staff, I do my training there.
I looked into how much it cost to land there as a visitor! I was born in Bristol, and have family there, so would love to drop in some time.
If you ever do decide to pop down please post it on your facebook page as I would come down and meet you!
hello, i was just wandering id when the weather gets warmer we could arrange a fly in to Duxford, around begging of august :D
ive now got my first ever flight story, my latest vid shows it, was a very distressing time.
Hi there, I have my first PPL lesson up at Rochester (EGTO) on Friday and I can't wait! I have two questions for you; Firstly, what pens do you draw with on your CAA chart? And secondly, what do you use to rub the ink off afterwards? Cheers Sam
Hi. I used pens like this to mark the map www.transair.co.uk/sp+Chart-Naviation-Accessories-Lumocolour-Chart-Pen-Pack+4660
I then use the following whiteboard marker pen, drawing over the top of the lines, and a tissue to wipe clean the pen marks. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0031RG2BU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thank you
Hi Jon, really great and very informative! Are you sure you were not an instructor in a past life? Looking forward to the next instalment, and make sure you pop into Stapleford on route its a great club. Stu ( P.S Hope that wasnt your smalls on the washing line in the back ground! Lol)
Hi Stuart, thank you. Even UA-cam pilots have to do their laundry.
Sorry Jon I was just practising my scanning skills! Keep the great videos coming! Stu
Why is it that you're more likely to get permission if you fly direct overhead the airport rather than cutting through the corner?
Really enjoy your videos. This one in particular has reminded me how thankful I am to be flying in the states! You guys have it tough.
jrobert189 Yes, it’s so much easier to fly in the area around New York City than in the area around London.
Let me guess. You’ve never flown in the New York City area in your life.
The airspace is pretty complicated in places over here.
Map? IFR?🙃
Could you of flew VFR all the way without speaking to ATC?
You'd have to speak to Biggin Hill, if you avoided Luton, you could avoid speaking to them, you'd be wise to speak to Cranfield if you're passing through their instrument approach procedure. If you routed east and below East Midlands controlled airspace, you could avoid speaking to them, but you ought to speak to Sherburn on arrival. In short - not really.
