Really cool. Now I know what things look like on both sides of the Virtual Railfan camera at the Kingsley Inn.

That bridge over the Mississippi River at Fort Madison is now the world's longest double-decker swing bridge, and is owned by BNSF Railway. Even this traffic on BNSF's busy southern transcontinental route has to yield to barge traffic on the river.

Between Lomax and Dallas City, the CB&Q had a branch line (Burlington to Quincy) to the south of the Santa Fe mainline.
After the 1965 Mississippi River floods, north of Lomax, this CB&Q line was abandoned and removed in sections over the following 25 years.
    -
2:27 Dallas City, IL : Named for George Mifflin Dallas, 11th Vice President of the United States of America (1845 to 1849).
10:15 Niota, IL : Cross-overs at eastern bridge approach. Niota had significant damage due to flooding in 1965, but town was saved.
In 1993, efforts to reinforce levees failed, and the 1993 flood damage from the Mississippi River was the worst in its history.
13:05 Ft. Madison, IA. The single railroad track on left is the CB&Q River Line (K-Line) from Burlington, IA (to north) to St.Louis, MO. Historic Sheaffer Pen Corporation HQ and Factory (1913-2008), out of site on Left, closed after BIC / A.T.Cross moved production to China.
14:00 Former Santa Fe passenger station. Station raised five feet & Ft.Madison trying to raise $$ for new Amtrak passenger platform.

I wouldn't mind retiring in Ft. Madson, seems like a nice place to live. A house up high enough to see the railroads, the river, and the bridge. But after spending 40+ years in Colorado I don't know if I could handle that Midwestern humidity. And bugs. And tornadoes And floods. Yow, all the stuff I left behind when I moved away from Missouri after I finished college. LOL

Thanks for the view of crossing the Mississippi in daylight.. I took the SWC from Chicago to Kingman AZ last November and we crossed the river in the dark. The only way you knew you were over water was seeing the shore lights reflecting on the water and bridge girders.. Your trip must have been in mid summer with long days..

These are sweeeeeet! You should try adding some key search words to your description so others can find this. Try "rear view" "cab view", etc.

You would think Amtrak would keep the rear door window, clean inside and out, for those people, who like to shoot videos out this same window. That's not the case. As you noticed. The scenery was so beautiful, but was disturbed by this very dirty window. If you have plans to shoot videos out the rear door window of your next train trip, make sure you take plenty of glass cleaner and towels, paper or cloth. Before cleaning the outside glass, make sure you get permission first, and the train is not moving.

My amtrak is not runnin til they open the Canadian border with ny. The Adirondack and the Ethan allen are both goin from nyc to Albany and no further north

    • @kendufresne

That's crazy. You'd think Amtrak would've run the Adirondack to atleast Plattsburgh and the Ethan Allen to Ft. Edward, if that were possible.
